Vaun Kaiser voyage with the Tinker

OOC:
Welcome to the story @Stalker05
Quote:
Vaun Kaiser, is a curious man with a mysterious air around him. He wears a tight-fitting jacket and and trouser, covered by a black leather longcoat. His face is covered by a beaked mask with googles for eyes. It's clear that he has worked with the plague doctors in the far off academy. Strapped to his belt is a shiny, long knife that is polished to reflection. He also carries a weathered, studded leather gladstone bag wherever he goes. Vaun Kaiser is obviously out of place for an adventurer, but here he is wandering along for some reason. Is it because he is escaping from something or is it because he needs money? He is very friendly and offers his skill in healing and helping people for a modest price. You can also notice him scribbling and writing about various things on his spare time.
As Vaun wandered from town to town he came across a tinker who agreed to travel with him. A wandering doctor and mender of things seemed like a great match. Though the pair had vastly different areas of expertise the each recognised in the other a true craftsmen.

Recently the pair had heard tell of a new outpost to the west and both having a tough of wanderlust and curiosity decided it might be interesting to visit the place. Vaun to find new plants and the tinker to meet interesting people and learn some new things. As so they set out, crossing the river and following it southwest towards the Expedition base.

Garret Velryn
The tinker, a human named Garret loves stories and Vaun had asked him why he was not a bard. The man had laughed and explained he had tried it but his voice lacked the power, control, and range needed for crowds. So he choose another profession that let him travel and gather tales. He often swapped these stories with the few bards he encountered for a share of their take.

Garret had a pair of trained pack dogs, an overly intelligent donkey, and some sort of sprite that Vaun never quite saw but was constantly noticing traces of or glimpsing out of the corner of his eye. This made travel easy as the sprite would warn Garret or nearby dangers and the dogs helped intimidate mild threats. Together the small band wandered down the occasional animal track, along the river bank, or through the low rolling hills when a bend in the river made leaving it the quicker choice. As they traveled they notice that they were not the first to come this way though the traces were few and far between.

One day as they set out for the morning they crested a rise and scanned to horizon only to spot a trail of smoke some ways off to the west. The pair agreed to visit the nearby camp, after a prudent examination from out of sight. Upon nearing the source of the smoke the pair saw a sight neither had seen before, centaurs. A small, and mobile from the look of it, village of 50 or so centaur were nestles in a small hollow between several of the hill. Garren was all for heading strait in and seeing if they were friendly.
OOC:
Let me know how you want to approach the village. Feel free to add things to the story including some interaction with th NPC centaurs. Some players like to add to the story more while others prefer only to direct their character. Welcome and have fun :)

Vaun didn't have a lot of friends in his time at the academy. There were acquaintances, for sure, but never friends. Scholars there were either too busy or too competitive. A fact that he learned by trusting one and sharing about his experiments. However, he has decided to forget about the gloom and move onward for new experiences. This is when he met Garret and his skills in technology and engineering never failed to amaze him. Garret would have easily flourished in the academy with such skill and craftsmanship, something that made Vaun a bit jealous in the beginning, but he could not but accept his skills, and slowly they started to rely on each other. When he needed some instruments, Garret made them for him. Whenever someone needed medical attention, he complemented his skills. The mutual respect turned dependence into a strong friendship, and Garret might have become the best friend Vaun never had.

Several times, Vaun has helped cure Garret's pack of dogs. Shank and Prank were their names, and they were a sturdy breed. There were many times when they sniffed a bad fungus, caught a nasty infection or got riddled with mites and other nasty insects. Vaun had a cure for those problems, and he had come to rely on them to form a close bond. In their travels, Vaun and Garret has seen their fair share of adventures, and now they must have stumbled onto something new.

When Vaun first saw the centuars, he was fascinated by them. A curious case of hybrid anatomy baffling any explanation. He has dissected bipedal bodies and quadrupeds too. This was something new—almost hexapedal, but not exactly. The entire anatomy showed bilateral symmetry, but what about inside? Was there a large heart to support circulation throughout? How much musculature to coordinate the entire locomotary system? How did their ears handle the orientation? How was the body handling heat generation? He was scratching his chin while watching the centaurs and Garret immediately knew what was going inside his mind. So he shook his head and gave Vaun a knowing smile as he walked towards the village.

Vaun followed Garret after realising that he was pondering for sometime and then went to meet the first centuar who seemed most approachable. He gave a bow and said "Greetings, my name is Vaun Kaiser and this is my good friend Garret Velryn. We are travellers and we just saw smoke in this direction. It is a pleasure to meet you, what's the name of this village, if I may ask?"

OOC:
Nice story telling! :)
centaur
The large muscular figure is quite imposing as he moves with strength and grace. The centaur answers you question with a deep resonant baritone voice
Well met. We are the Black Foot herd. You are welcome to our camp if you come with peace. Come I will take you to an elder

As you talk he guides you into the camp. The few structures they have are obviously built to be portable and the camp itself it quite simple. Filled mostly with young and child centaurs with a few females and fewer males. Though most wear little in the way of clothing you do see several with vests and harnesses for both the humanoid torso and equestrian body. These are used to hold tools or pouches. The smoke rises from a few fires with racks of thin sticks supporting meat that they are smoking. Some of the adult's and adolescents work on tanning leather hides while others share it into closes, blankets, or the sides of their portable buildings. Others weave reeds, likely gathered from the river to the east, or mold clay that is backed into small vessel. The entire place has an odd mixture of relaxation and diligence. Even the young are mindful to keep their game from those working.

Tallethyria

Once in the center of camp you meet an older female centaur who is teaching several youth to shoot a bow. Along the way you have attracted a small crowd of younger centaurs that watch and even follow you at a distance. Shank and Prank seem alert but as you move further into the camp draw close to Garret.
Your guide canters up to the woman and whispers something to her before trotting off. The woman turns to you I am called Tallethyria. You are welcome here with peace. We do not often see humans this side of the river, and those we do see are usually better armed. You look more like tradesmen. What brings you to these lands?
Oct 23, 2023 6:43 am
Vaun looked at the large-bodied centaur and gave a slight bow. "Well met, we do come in peace. It would be an honour to meet your elder and make acquaintance with your tribe." A fine muscular specimen, probably of middle age. Has seen his fair share of hunting. Probably plays the guard role for this tribe. Vaun was thinking and observing as he followed the centaur to the centre of the settlement.

Vaun and Garret moved through the settlement along with their dogs. A fine, burgeoning settlement with the presence of social virtues and craftsmanship. Their intelligence and high thinking are on par with those of the other sentient race, but they have chosen a life of low technology and wilderness. Maybe a decade more, and they will start venturing into the subjects of technology and usher in a new way for their lifestyle. What do I see here? Hmm, a disparity in the sexes? So, is that a natural selection at work? Less male ones because they are out hunting and have more mortality? Or is it their birth rate? A tendency for more female litter? Ah, children playing and learning? Looks like a strong presence of discipline in this tribe. Garret eyed Vaun with a knowing smile and couldn't help but say, "I am guessing you are taking notes? One look at your body language, and its evident even though you wear that mask of yours every day." Vaun replied, "You know me well, my good friend."

Once they were brought in front of the old centaur, Vaun and Garret both focused their attention on her. They both bowed deeply. "Greetings, Elder Tallethyria, we are grateful for your hospitality. My name is Vaun and this is my friend Garret. We are indeed travellers exploring these lands. Our destination was to meet an expedition to explore the ruins of the city of Paphos. We took a detour, hoping we would save some time. I am a healer, and my friend here is a craftsman. If your tribe needs any help that we can provide, we will gladly oblige. We plan to rest here for a day and restock, so that we can move again towards the expedition."

Tallethyria
As you greet her you hear a few giggles from the nearby children but a firm glare silences them. We do not use titles when addressing individuals who bear them. This helps remind each that they are an individual of the herd and not some pushed up popoycok on a throne. she corrects you gently with an edge of steel that you feel was more for the children. Though you get the sence this lady will treat anyone she feels deserving of it as a child in need of education.

We have out own healer and craftment but an exchange of practices and information would be concidered something worthy of the trivial thing you seek. Have you eate . . . You chat with Tallethyria for a bit and she directs one of the older youth nearby to take up the lessons as she guides you elsewhere. Garret is depoosited with a group of craftmen and quickly takes out his portable kiln and cruible that he uses on him metal work and begins aimatedly discussing the trick to portable metal work and other odd jobs with the local craftmen. You are taken a short ways away, within sight and earshot of Garret, Shank, Prank, and Gossip the donkey (named so for when Garret traveled alone and got in the habbit of talking to it, the dogs being less into idle chatter).

Tallethyria gathers a few other centaurs, a couple women and an old male. Each is introlduces along with their specialty. The old stallion, Brulhundur, is a former hunter who now speciallizes in the treatment of wounds, surgery, and setting bones. The yopng fillie , Elharintha, is interested in herbal lore and the treatment of illnesses. The other mare, Tallethyria's sister Tallintia, focuses on rehabilitation and triage as well as teaching the young with her sister. You quickly learn the bigest concern of the centaur is the repid recovery of leg injries. Centaurs are somewhat well known for their pride and being the cause of the herd being forced to stay in one area too long is a shame that has driven many centaur to travel before being ready to , much less fully recovered.

You are taken to a young adult who took a bad jump and tanded horibly, snapping the bone and breaking the skin. The bone has been set and the leg wrapped and splinted. Brulhundur holds one of the centaurs arms, though none say it is for ballance, while Tallintia removes the bandage. They ask you to prepare a treatment based on the need you see before you.

Describe how Vaun handles this and add a roll for each step of the process. You can go as technical as you like or just go over the basic idea Rolls that use a trait or background roll with advantage and so get 3d6, basic rolls use 2d6, and anything Vaun in unfaniliar with is at disadvantage rolling only 1d6.
Actions where you have time, so most things out of combat, but still requiring a test roll can be focused on and so pass on a 4,5, or 6 on any of the dice. If you do not have time to focus then only 5 and 6 are a pass.
OOC:
I added details for your traits. Healer is an active ability alowing healing while ducated is for knowledge and Alchemist is a practical crafting skill

Vaun was a bit taken aback by the wisdom of the elder centaur. He wasn't expecting such high morals from the tribe, but everything is a learning experience. He smiled inside his mask, though it was not visible. "Ah, I see. You have a point, Tallethyria; my apologies. We will be greatly enriched by learning from your people, and I would love to indulge in some knowledge exchange. We were travelling, so unfortunately, we haven't eaten anything."

Vaun followed Tallethyria, as he was taken to meet the other healers of the tribe. He bowed to each of the centaurs and chatted more specifically with Elharintha. "How have you learned about the herbs and their properties? Is there a record that you keep? Were you taught by your mentor or were you self-trained?" It continued for sometime until it went purely scientific. "Vesgnea scutefera, that is the name we give to that herb of yours, red flowers with a blue tinge at the centre. Do you know, if you heat it in water and make a tea, you can calm your nerves and have a good sleep? It can be locally applied in a wound to reduce pain, only momentarily though and with high quantities." As more discussion proceeded, he came to know about the culture and pride of the centaurs. A bit restrictive and superstitious for a higher race who has such developed wisdom and knowledge. Then again, humans are not different in their categorization, thought Vaun.

When he was finally taken to see the injured centaur, his eyes widened. This was hands-on medical training to handle a hybrid specimen. This is my chance to know more about their anatomy and perhaps morphology. Then he remembered Garret's face, and he sighed internally. Right, we are at a foreign place and this is our testing ground to show our helpful inclination. This can't be my experimental table.

He observed the injured centaur with utmost concentration. After taking out his journal and his trusty quill, he started to make a sketch of the splintered leg, sometimes tapping gently in order to see the splinter and the bone orientation. He drew a picture of the injured protrusion and tried to guess how the bone was oriented. In the meantime, he made a list of herbs and sent Elharintha to fetch them. "Heat the herbs and then chop and grind them to paste; we are going to make a poultice." He spoke gently to the young centaur, "Don't worry, you will be up and running soon. It would be helpful for you, if you could perhaps lie down for sometime."

OOC: I don't know about the rules but I am guessing that if I use educated trait to get information about the anatomy and normal bone setting techniques and restorative medicine, then I will probably get an advantage on Healer check. So, here is my first roll with advantage.

Vaun thought for a long time, but it didn't seem to help him tackle the problem from any angle. He did all he could; now it was all up to the natural healing of the centaur. He applied the poultice and then started setting the bone. It would be painful if the poultice didn't work and he knew how much rested on his action. So, he focused with his full attention and took all the time needed for the treatment. He was deaf to all the things that were going on around him. All that needed was his attention now.

OOC: My educated roll failed, so I don't think I will get advantage on my healing roll. However, I am focusing on this work. Lets see how the roll goes.

OOC: Ah a 4, finally. Hopefully that's a success? Since I focused and took my time.

OOC:
The Healer trait actually allows for magical healing but mixing that with your alchemical and scholastic background you also are familiar with the more mundane healing techniques.
Though you are able to help with treating the wound you feel your explanation is not understood completely. The magical healing of your touch, though unable to completely restore the strength of the bone, does you are sure help speed the strengthening process. The centaurs are polite and attentive and you catch Elharintha staring intently as you let your magic flow. She soon strikes up a conversations and after a few minutes the two of you are left to talk. The centaurs have a few that touch on the natural magics of the world but there was none with the gift and interest when the last healer for the Black Foot tried passed. Elharintha was tested and may develop the talent but without a consistent teacher it has been hard to awaken the ability by herself.

You chat the morning away while some food is brought to you. You are invited to stay the day and Garret is only all too happy to stay the afternoon, evening, and even another day. During this time you are free to ask what you will and learn several local plant that you can add or substitute for ones you are more familiar with but are much less common in this area. Let me know what you might want in trade form the centaur or any questions you might want to ask before moving on.

And so you spend two days with the tribe, mostly going over medicine and magical healing theory with Elharintha. She takes you around to heal any hurt herd members so she can watch and try to feel the flow of the magic. On the second morning Elharintha thanks you for your time and has a few young hunter give you a ride and escort towards your destination. By now you are well aware the privilege they are giving you by letting you ride on them as Gosip is forced to trot to keep up with the longer legged centaur. The hunters wave farewell and you are left with Garret, Gossip, and the dogs.

Making your way more to the south, as the centar traveled mostly west on the flatter dryer land away from the river. by late afternoon you make your way to within sight of the river and start looking for a place to camp for the evening. Finding a good spot you settle down for the night and dig into the provisions Garret collected in trade for his work.

You lay down to rest, leaving the night watch to the more sensitives senses of Garrets beasts. You are both awoken by a low grown to to gloom of full night only to spring to your feet as both dogs erupt in barking as something leaps out of the brush towards Gossip!

Gossip is knocked down as it screams and breys while Shank and Pranks surge forwards snarling and biting at the larger predator. Their teamwork lets them get a few hits in but the larger predators massive jaws and claws can likely finish them off with a single good hit. Garrent cries in alarm as he is set upon but another of the creatures and forced to defend himself calling Prank to his side while sending Shank to yours.

OOC: I don't know if I have any money to buy anything from the centaurs. If I don't have anything, can I owe them a favour? Like we become respected guest there and they will aid me if I call them in dire need?

The mingling and pleasantries were engaging and refreshing with the Black foot herd of centaurs. The acquisition of knowledge and exchange of ideas have enriched Vaun and he has come to love their company. He has seen potential in Elharintha and with practise, she would definitely gain the capability to channel the inner magic into her medicine. When he was alone with Elharintha, he made it a point to encourage her focusing on her potential and skill. "You are destined for great things, Elharintha. You have the skill and right set of mind. You only need to practice. With more training you will master the art of healing in no time. If I ever meet your tribe again, I would want to see you as the prominent healer of your tribe. And then perhaps, a day will come when you will heal me."

After two days, Vaun and Garret set out for their destination, bidding goodbye to the Black foot tribe and wishing them well for their next migration. They set up the campsite after their travels but were rudely awakened by a reptilian attack.

Vaun and Shank were facing this large creature as adrenaline flowed through him. He was not a fighter, but here he was adventuring. He knew that sooner or later he would have to face combat; after all, it was the life of an adventurer. He took out his long knife and gripped it tightly in his hand. The situation would escalate badly if this went sideways. He waited for an opening and lunged forward with his knife.

OOC: Can you attack and evade at the same time? I am proficient with light weapons so I guess that gives me advantage on this knife attack?

Attack is 1 action. Evade is 1 action but lasts the entire round. Proficiency just lets you use a standard test to attack (2d60. Weapon mastery gives advantage to attacks (3d6). Attacking without proficiency gives disadvantage (1d6).
I am using the 1st and 2nd dice on your roll for attack and 3rd for a dodge then
The dinosaur has mastery of it's leaping attack, 3d6 last round, and proficiency with natural wepons 2d6 this round twice

So even though you missed the knife attack your dodge roll (5) saved you from his bite
Van swings at the dinodaur as Shank harries its flanks. In return the dinosaur snaps its jaws at Vaun anbd slaps its tail at Shanks. A yelp and whimper later the dinosaur has the dog pinned under it's foot and the dinosaurs teeth dig deep into Shanks shoulder and neck..

Hearing Garret's plea, Vaun snapped to his senses. Shank was grievously wounded by the reptile's jaws, and he needed to do something fast. He took some syringes strapped to his belt and quickly injected some crimson-colored fluid into Shank.

OOC: Taking heal test.

The dinosaur turns at this last attack and runs off with powerful strides. Prank dashes after it only a few strides before stopping and staring after it a while then turning to glance back at Shank, Gossip, and Garret. Shank struggles to sit up and whimpers a bit before settling back down. Gossip continues to quiver from pain and fear but has gotten back on its feet and stands next to Shank.

Turning you see Garret continue his defensive dance with the dinosaur. Moving to aid you fried the two of you quickly drive off the dinosaur. You heal everyone as best you can as Garret packs up the camp. You set off with Shank and Prank trotting tight circles around everyone as you walk through the dark of night. You keep this up until sunrise at which point Garret starts looking for a safer resting spot.

Garret Velryn
As you settle onto a hill top with a single tree Garret turns to you I am sorry my friend. I was not carful enough . Those creatures were unfamiliar to Shank and Prank so they likely missed traces of their cent as we entered the beasts hunting grounds. We shall have to be more careful from here on. Or we can turn back

The tinker looks shaken and unsure. But you are days if not weeks from the nearest settlement. The centaurs could likely help if needed but. . . . .
Oct 26, 2023 5:24 am
Vaun could see the uncertainty in the eyes of his best friend. He rested his hand on Garret's shoulders reassuringly and said, "Look, we didn't know about this. These are unfamiliar lands, and we do not know anything about predator corridors. I should have been more careful. Now, our pets are facing the price. I am just happy that you are alright; we could have become their food if not for Shank and Prank and even Gossip, as a matter of fact. However, now I am lost. These are wildlands, and you say that the nearest settlement is days away? We won't survive another attack like this. Let me see the lay of the land; if I can't make up my mind, it would be a safer alternative to ask the centaurs to guide us. Strength in numbers, and they are much more at home in these lands than us."

Vaun took out a notebook and started making a sketch of the land ahead as seen from the top of the hill. He took his time to focus and recall whatever he knew about this place.

Vaaun sketches what he knows of the area based on maps and their travel time and puts himself and Garret about half-way (X) to the expedition Base. Though dinosaurs are unknown to the east and north they had heard tell that the swamp the expdition was found near had creatures that match the description of these dinosaurs. Though the river is known to have a few bandit on it, that raid supply barges heading to and from the expedition, it is concidered the safest route by most. The barges often lay up on the river bank at night. If you move slong the river bank you may find their caps that they have used in the past and find a place that you may be able to get a ride or at least talk with the boatmen.

Vaun could recall the lay of the land and pondered his options. It would be better to discuss this with Garret so he came back to the camp and showed him the sketch. "So, this is probably where we are. We can take the river banks and hopefully find a boat to ferry us to the base or we can go to the centaur's and ask them for some protection. Do note, the bandits are known to prey on people going through the bank. What do you suggest we do?"
