37 will place a free hand on the wall and proceed down the steps slowly, testing each one with his foot as he advances.

Stepping into the darkness, 37 carefully joins the others at the bottom of the stairs.

Peldan has no issue climbing down the ceiling.
It dawns on 37 that this must be a magical darkness spell and likely more than one. He realizes the light from his shield must have been dispersed when he entered it. He knows the spell normally emanates from a point, in this case it must be an object, possibly more than one. He knows if he can find the sources and cover them, they will block the darkness. Or, he supposes, they could cast a stronger light spell.

Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot-radius sphere for the duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it.
If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn’t being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.
If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.

Upon hearing 37's words, Vice starts fumbling around the room.

As 37 walks into a wall, the sounds of chains rattling can be heard. Vice, the nimble one, finds three slender pillars surrounding a large cylindrical object. As best he can tell, it’s some kind of pot on a stone column.

Leading with his toe, 37 finds the closest pillar just behind him.

37’s fumbles in the darkness with one of the stone pillars for quite some time before finding what feels like a smooth stone of some kind attached about seven feet from the floor. The little gnome would have been unlikely to have found it at such a height.
However, the warforge’s bad luck with traps continues. Fortunately, this time the chain is less pinchy. A chain springs to life from the wall, binding the warforged head to toe to the pillar like an iron snake, restraining him there in the darkness.
While contemplating his lot in life, he’s pretty sure he’s found at least one source of the darkness. He’s currently unable to do anything about it.

She notes as there is little she can do as she moves on, "That really sounds like the chains again. I know you can't read a book in the dark." as she toy some with unfortunate him. Her shadow so much hates this place.
