Albert lets Humphrey do most of the talking, since this is a place he's been before. As he steps inside, he nods to the innkeeper and his wife. "Good evening." But otherwise doesn't say much. He first wants to get a feel of the atmosphere in this place.

With a slight smile he looks over to the table with the locals, trying to see what type of men they are from their appearance. Most probably they are farmers or tradesmen, but you never know.
OOC:
If needed I could do some kind of investigation roll.
Feb 10, 2024 5:06 pm
'' Good evening, thank you for taking us in'' Roald says as he crosses the doorstep. He makes sure Humphrey walks in before him so he can make the arrangements.
Feb 11, 2024 9:00 am
If there is a tense atmosphere in the inn, Humphrey appears unaware of it. "It is getting dark." He says. "So we need rooms for the night."

"Rooms." The innkeeper repeats. "Yes. We can do that." He seems to be trying to put on a brave face so as to not put off the paying customers. The inn has a reputation to uphold.

"And scenic drinks!" Humphrey declares.

"Drinks we can do." The innkeeper nods. "But inside. The scenic... er... the veranda is broken. Yes, broken. You can't go out there."

"Good. Good." Humphrey says, looking in the direction of the bar to start with the drinking. He nods in greeting to the other patrons. If he is disappointing by any of this, he does not show it.
• Do you stay and speak to the locals, here, first? Or do you go straight to your rooms to stow your gear? Or do you keep your packs in the main room while you eat and drink (for those of you who do drink)?
How many rooms do you (OOC) want between, the 5 of you? Separate rooms cost a bit more, of course, but Humphrey is taking care of those details.
Feb 11, 2024 9:39 am
Albert is quite a jovial person, coming from the bartender profession himself. Instead of heading straight to his room, he joins Humphrey for a drink.

"Broken veranda? What happened to it? Wildlife?" He asks the innkeeper, glancing at the door most likely leading to the veranda. He is genuinely interested rather than outright suspicious.
OOC:
I think 2 rooms in total will do. We've got the gear to sleep on the floor, I suppose.
Feb 12, 2024 11:52 pm
When Roald asks for water, the bartender gives him an odd look. But makes no comment.
He says to Albert: '' I would be more at ease if we keep our packs in sight, maybe we can store them over there during dinner and afterwards take them with us to our room. They're worth 150 silver, so best be alert.''

Roald puts all the backpacks underneath a lamp attached to the wall. He takes a chair at the table closest by and stretches his legs under the table arms behind his head.
His stomach growls...
Feb 14, 2024 8:32 am
There is a pot hanging above the fire in the fireplace. By the smell of it, it could be a stew... As well es dirty laundry.

'' excuse me, barkeep, is it possible to get a meal? ''
Feb 14, 2024 9:54 am
"Oh yes, me too please!" Albert adds
Feb 14, 2024 11:33 am
"Wild? Yes, definitely wildlife." They agree. "So keep your windows closed at night."

Humphrey has arranged two rooms, with enough beds. Neither he nor the staff react to your where you dump your packs, there will be time to view the rooms once you have supped.

The stew-pot is almost empty, but you don't get the impression that is due lack of provisions, but instead that they were not expecting guests tonight and were making ready to clean up. The innkeeper brings out bread —backed earlier today— and cheese, and some fruit, and there is the promise of sweet-cake and berries after. This seems like a more 'up-market' place than you have become accustomed to recently.

The visiting-locals seem torn between their plans to get home and curiosity about your group.

"What's your story, then?" One asks your group in a friendly way, scooching over to join you at your table. They don't seem to 'know' Humphrey, not more than to recall 'he drives a coach past here sometimes', but did note that he did not ask to stable any horses this time. Humphrey is busy with his drink, and assumes they are asking you and don't care about his broken axle and wife troubles.

What do you do?
Feb 16, 2024 8:18 am
"Ah. Good evening, sir." Albert tells the man who scoots over. "We are merely passing through. My friend Humphrey here is a coach driver, but is lacking a coach at this moment." He chuckles at the comment. "So we are accompanying him on his way to retrieve the old carriage from Olmsford. We were hoping to get there before sunset, but the trip turned out to be a bit more time-consuming than first expected."

"Good thing there are road-side inns like this one to give us a safe sleeping spot for the night!" He raises his mug for a cheers and starts eating the meal put before him. "What about you guys? You live nearby? What's the news around these parts?"
Feb 16, 2024 8:58 am
"You're Wayne, right?" The man asks, smiling. "I'm Wayne, too." It is possible he has waited all his life to make that joke. "I always wanted to learn to fix wagons. See them passing through all the time. Good reliable work?"

"The inn is nice." Wayne agrees. "Gives us a place to come and relax of an evening. There is nothing else around here. I live over there. On the plantation. Bob too." He points inland, then at the other man at who was sitting with him. Bob holds up his mug in greeting and gives you a big smile completely devoid of teeth, but does not come over or speak to you.

Bob does try to catch Wayne's eye and gesture, with a tilt of his head, that they should be getting home, but Wayne is more interested in continuing the conversation.

"You look familiar." He says Albert. "How long you been in the wagon fixing business?"
Feb 16, 2024 11:15 am
Albert blinks at first, not realizing the joke. Then laughs heartily at it. "Oof... That took me a while!"

"Oh, you may know me from the tavern I used to run." Albert replies "The Deer's Antlers. Unfortunately, it burned down, so I had to find a new line of work. Is it that wheat farm we passed on the way here?"
Feb 16, 2024 11:26 am
"Never heard of it." Wayne shrugs. "Was it near here?" Albert's old place is sufficiently far from here that most of the locals would not have been there.

"No its the tree farm, just before ... or after.. the big wheat farm." Wayne says, pointing his two hands in opposite directions to indicate 'before/after'. "You can't see it from the road... what with all the trees." He grins.

Bob stands and walks over, nudging Wayne in the arm and indicating the door.

"Yeah, yeah." Wayne waves him away distractedly, not getting up.
Feb 17, 2024 8:48 am
Roald is not actively participating in the conversation but listens in while he eats.
OOC:
If Albert is not eating during his talk with the locals, he makes sure there is some food left
The cake is outstanding and after dinner he feels both satisfied and tired.
"I think I'm going to turn in early guys, see you tomorrow." He thanks the innkeep for the lovely meal and asks for breakfast and some provisions for the next day.
Feb 17, 2024 8:51 am
"Of course, dear." The innkeeper's wife beams at Roald after his complement. "Sleep well."

"Oh, and keep the windows closed. OK?"
Feb 18, 2024 10:40 am
Roald takes all the stuff from the common room into his room, it takes him 3 trips up the stairs. The room has a certain smell... which makes him want to open a window. He stands in front of the window doubting, should he take the patron's warning serious?
After a moment he decides not to risk it and lays down on the bed, he stares at the ceiling for a while,...

It might have been minutes, but also might have been hours, at first you can't tell if you are dreaming when you hear Waynes voice and a tapping coming from outside your upstairs window.

"Erm... excuse me." He hear Wayne say. "I seem to be locked out. It was too late for me to go home so I took a room. But I went out for a smoke and seem to be locked on the balcony. Could you let me in."
OOC:
Until we know more, let's leave Albert out of the scene for now. That way we can easily position him in the bed next to yours, or in the room next to yours, or still down at the bar, drinking and being social.

Feel free to include any and all NPCs you want. We will make it make sense with the two rooms.
Feb 20, 2024 9:27 pm
Albert decides to talk a bit more with Wayne before heading to bed himself. He nods to Roald, who is off to sleep, and orders another drink. "Ah, a tree farmer, huh? A forester as they say. Nice to meet you. Are you having troubles with the wildlife too then? Just like our innkeep here?" He's still a bit unclear about what exactly is going on, but tries to be subtle about his questioning.
Feb 21, 2024 2:41 pm
Roald is in a deep sleep dreaming of beautiful women feeding him grapes when he is rudely awakend by a tapping on his window.
He opens his eyes and sees Waynes ugly face staring at him through the filthy windows. luckely there is a full moon or he might have been scared out of his wits after the warning of the innkeep.
He gets out of bed and opens the window for Wayne to climb in.
"Damnit, I was dreaming such a nice dream Wayne."
He opens his bedroom door for Wayne to leave asap so he can get back to dreaming.

Seeing that the conversation is to go on for while, Bob shrugs and departs on his own into the evening.

"Not a forest anymore." Wayne says with a grin, and you can't tell if he is being clever or stupid.

"No, we have not had any trouble up there." He drops his voice as he adds this last bit: "All the trouble was here, at the inn. Guests brutally murdered. Ripped apart, I hear. But they are trying to keep it quite."

What do you do?

Mist flows in as Wayne flops through the window accompanied by a sickeningly sweet, fruity smell that might be alcohol on his breath. He looks around, confused, before wordlessly gliding out the door you are holding for him.

As you head back to bed, something worries at your mind. Something about the balcony, maybe?
• Do you bother to check? Or head back to your grape-feeding-women?

What do you do?
