Chargen Step Three: Personal Details

Choosing my character name, pronoums, homeworld and describing my family, childhood, and adolescence.

A bit more than a century ago, an ITC exploration ship arrived at the system labeled Mondassian-Kolno 74, and in their survey of the planets, they discovered two of interest, which were named Akvarin-Pyeong 1 and 2 after the two scientists who set foot on the worlds and did the analyses. Akvarin-Pyeong 1 had gravity very near Earth standard, and so various corporations worked with the ITC to establish colonies there. By now, the various colonies refer to their world informally as "Akpy." But the second body, Akvarin-Pyeong 2, was a dwarf planet containing a lot of metals and covered with ice. Engineers slightly altered the trajectory of a comet so that it impacted with Akvarin-Pyeong 2, breaking it into many chunks. Mining operations began to set up in the asteroid belt, mining metals and ice for shipment to Akpy. Inevitably, settlements grew on the larger planetoids in this destroyed belt. The inhabitants began to refer to the belt as "Destroid," and each inhabited asteroid was given a number in the order they were first settled.

Douklan Paravides was born and raised on Destroid-3 in the MK-74 system. Douklan was born to his mother Shanren, a Navy flight officer, and father Paumo, an entertainer, when they settled down after Shanren's honorary discharge after three tours. Both were native Destroidos, and they ran a small shuttle/tug for hire all through Douklan's childhood. He spent his time learning to maneuver in a vacuum suit in low gravity when he wasn't with his parents on trips to and from Akpy. They sent Douklan to school on Akpy, and he proudly remembers that he was there on the surface when it rained for the first time outside of Dendro Colony. The ITC terraforming scientists, working with the Akpy and Destroid engineers, had finally brought enough water onto the planet that noticeable precipitation had begun. It became a holiday at Dendro, called "Rain Day." (Other colonies had similar experiences at different times, but Dendro was the first colony to observe actual rainfall.) Douklan was an excellent student and was fascinated by spatial and logic puzzles in particular. He was drawn to the arts and physics as a result: sculpture, 3D modeling, and hydrodynamics. Douklan was never as strong as the natives, but he exercised quite a bit to not be debilitated by the heavy gravity, and his reflexes made up for what his muscles lacked. He was decent at any sports that involved throwing things, so he managed to get a spot on his school's sling ball team as an adolescent. He met a native Akpian girl at school, Farchelle, and had a semi-serious romantic relationship for the last two years of school. With graduation, they hoped that their choices would allow them to stay together, but they actually had never discussed it so neither knew the other's plans.

Chargen Step Four: Choosing Initial Skills

Initial skills:
Zero G - He was born on a low gravity asteroid, Destroid-3, and spent much of his life traveling between there and other locations in Destroid via a tug.

Reflex - He spent a lot of time on a ship, needing to react quickly to various developments. He also played a lot of sling ball.

Piloting - He grew up with his parents operating a shuttle/tug.

Notice - He needed to be alert to his surroundings - many sensors - on board a ship. He also dealt with native Akpy bullies at school, so awareness was an important survival skill.

Mechanics - Everyone living on an asteroid or in a ship for an extended period of time quickly learns how to repair myriad devices and equipment.

Tally of total skills:
- Academics (Fleet Tactics): 0 (Naval Academy)
- Arts: 1 (0 for studies, 1 for graduation)
- Athletics: 0 (0 from Naval Academy)
- Computers: 1 (0 for studies, 1 for graduation)
- Electronics: 0 (0 from Naval Academy)
- Engineering: 0 (0 from Naval Academy)
- Gunnery: 0 (0 from Naval Academy)
- Leadership: 1 (1 from 1st Navy tour)
- Mechanics: 0 (0 for upbringing)
- Navigation: 2 (1 for studies, 1 for graduation)
- Notice: 0 (0 for upbringing)
- Piloting: 1 (0 for upbringing, 1 for 1st Navy tour)
- Ranged Weapons: 0 (Naval Academy)
- Reflexes: 0 (0 for upbringing)
- Resilience: 0 (for Naval Academy)
- Zero-G: 0 (0 for upbringing)

Chargen steps six through eight: Education and Careers

Checking up on how to do checks against EDU. If I'm reading it correctly, to apply Douklan for university, I would:
1. Roll 1d20
2. Subtract 1 (for an EDU of 9)
3. Subtract 10 more (for the DC)
4. If the result is 0 or greater, Douklan is accepted.

Similarly, for Douklan to apply to Military Academy (Planetary Defense Forces), I would
1. Roll 1d20
2. Nothing is added or subtracted for the attribute, as the STR mod is 0.
3. Subtract 10 (for the DC)
4. If the result is 0 or greater, Douklan is accepted.

Are those both correct reads?

Age 18: Douklan applies for University (rolling against EDU). Douklan has been accepted to University.

I was waiting to say, in case the choice would be informed by "University play"/events you wanted to provide. But I think Navigation makes sense.

Should I continue with age 21, then?

Nope. It's the other way around, that's why I asked. I'll write an event with Navigation in mind (Daryen was Computers). Gimme a minute.

Trade Era 1220, Day 174

Mondassian-Kolno University, Akvarin-Pyeong 1

Douklan Paravides stood at the entrance of the prestigious Mondassian-Kolno University, a blend of excitement and nervousness coursing through him. Entering the Department of Astrophysics, Douklan marveled at the cosmic murals and interactive displays that adorned the walls. It felt like stepping into a gateway of knowledge that stretched across the vastness of the universe. His heart raced with the thrill of a new chapter.

As Douklan settled into his first astrophysics class, he found himself surrounded by students from diverse backgrounds. The professor, a seasoned astrophysicist with a mane of white hair, welcomed the eager minds embarking on this cosmic journey. His first lectures delved not only into celestial mechanics, gravitational waves and the intricacies of star formation but also in their interactions with the Jump Drives.

Douklan's artistic inclination found an unexpected ally in the subject. Astrophysics, he discovered, was not just about numbers and equations but also about envisioning the cosmos in all its splendor. Douklan's mind buzzed with ideas of sculpting celestial bodies and creating computer-assisted 3D models that captured the essence of distant galaxies.

Yet, amidst the academic fervor, Douklan faced a dilemma. He missed Farchelle, the Akpian girl who had shared his dreams during their school days. One day, as Douklan worked on a sculpture depicting the collision of asteroids, he received a message.
OOC:
What message, related to Farchelle, you have received? Did she find someone else? Enrolled in a nearby university? Entered in a career?

Yeah, thank you very much for your help in proofreading the game. The reverse order should only be for the Military Academy (there the events are before the bonus, as these are very interesting years)

Adjusted. Thank you again.
Dec 2, 2023 7:34 pm
Farchelle's application to university was not accepted, so she spent her first year just making money in odd jobs around Dendro. Since Rain Day, Akpy's population has swelled with an influx of all sorts of climate, biological, botanical engineers and their families. With that population growth, a need for entertainment has also grown. Farchelle joined a theater troupe and has had some success with her burgeoning entertainment career. Without the constant, daily interactions to keep them in tune with each other, Douklan and Farchelle have developed in different directions, with lives that aren't really built around the other any longer. They remain fond and affectionate, but they have less and less in common now, and there have been other relationships in the intervening three years since Douklan started his university studies.

Chargen Step Six through Eight: Education and Careers (continued)

Douklan's skills are currently:
- Navigation: 2 (1 for studies, 1 for graduation)

Age 21, post graduation: Feeling some pressure from his family to remain in civilized systems, Douklan decides not to run off to become a Deep Space Explorer and instead tries to follow in his mother Shanren's footsteps, applying to enroll in Navy Academy.

Age 22: Having his Naval Academy application rejected, Douklan decides to study some more in some correspondence courses (1 year spent training EDU).

Age 23: Determined that he will make it this time, Douklan applies again for entrance to the Navy Academy.

ITC Naval Academy, New Jordan

Departing from the familiar confines of the MK-74 system, Douklan Paravides embarked on a voyage that would take him to the prestigious ITC Naval Academy in New Jordan.

A couple of weeks later, he stood on the grounds of the ITC Naval Academy, a fresh chapter unfolding in his life. The vastness of space had called him, and now he embraced the challenge of becoming an Officer Candidate within the esteemed interstellar navy.

The initial weeks were a whirlwind of rigorous training, where the weight of responsibility matched the gravity of celestial bodies. Physical conditioning became an intense routine as Douklan honed his body to withstand the demands of space maneuvers and high-G environments.
Receive Resilience-0 as part of this event
In the classrooms, the celestial puzzles he had unraveled at the university now took on practical significance. Navigation, gravitational dynamics, and stellar cartography became his daily companions.

The second year brought more specialized training, including command simulations and live-space exercises. Douklan was entrusted with leading small fleets in tactical maneuvers, and his strategic thinking earned him recognition among his peers and instructors.
Receive Academics (Fleet tatics) +1 as part of this event
In a rare moment of reflection, Douklan sent a message to Farchelle, updating her on his celestial journey. The response was warm, filled with pride for his achievements, yet tinged with the realization that their orbits had drifted even farther apart.

As Douklan Paravides moved through the space cadet ranks, the vastness of the universe unfolded before him. The ITC Naval Academy became his training ground, the stars his guides, and the challenges ahead his cosmic destiny. The journey had just begun.
OOC:
Roll for graduation. What position are you looking for? You have a degree in Astrophysics, so Navigation would be a natural choice, but what do you think?
Dec 3, 2023 12:51 am
Age 27: Douklan has spent four years at the Naval Academy, and attempts to graduate.

Douklan graduates, and takes Gunnery, Piloting, and Electronics at +1.
OOC:
I guess the difference you're suggesting I try in my formatting the rolls is that I add the DC to the Reason field?

Edit: Yes, that seemed to do it.

Playtesting note: As I consider what Douklan does next, I notice that signing up for a first tour of duty in a Military Career after completing Military Academy training seems to gain the PC only the same skills at level 0. Completing the Academy training, you "receive all skills from that military carrer (sic) starting list at Level 0." But when you start a Military Career, "if that's your first career, you will receive all starting skills at level 0. For any subsequent careers, you may pick any one starting skill at Level 0 as your basic training." Does that first career only apply if it's the first career without Naval Academy training, so the gain from the first tour of duty of an Academy graduate is the same as for a second tour of duty, namely +1 to two skills?

And you don't subtract the DC from the dice, Gamersplane does it for you if you put it in the Reason. It should have been 1d20+4, from your Wits.

Either way, its green with a checkmark, so you graduated! Congratulations. Write something In Character telling us in what position you were assigned. Navigation? Piloting? Engineering? Gunnery?
Dec 3, 2023 1:09 am
Yup. In your first tour, you get all those skills at level 0, and 2 skills +1, from a list that I will tell you after you roll a D20 and your D4 for the years. But as you already have the level 0 ones from the Academy, effectively only the +1 matters.

Yes, I typed that wrong. If I'm reading the rules correctly, each check is trying to not get a negative number, as <0 fails. So, although we could write a Skill check of STR 10 as "Reason: Strength check (DC 10)" and "Roll: 1d20+mod," I have the impression that it would be more correct to write "Reason: Strength Check (DC 0)" and "Roll: 1d20-10+mod." Is that correct? I like the idea of a result of 0 or better being a success; it feels...more science fiction, somehow?
Dec 3, 2023 1:22 am

Main ITC Starbase and Sector headquarters, New Jordan system

Ensign Douklan Paravides stood tall, adorned in the crisp uniform of a newly commissioned officer, as he graduated with honors from the ITC Naval Academy. Now, an ITC Navy pilot, he was assigned to a Fast Corvette.

The spaceship, a sleek vessel designed for speed and agility, awaited him in the dock of the academy's space station. Its hull gleamed under the artificial lights, and its engines hummed with latent energy. Douklan felt a surge of anticipation as he approached his assigned ship, the gateway to the uncharted realms of the cosmos.

Boarding the ship, he was greeted by the crew—a diverse assembly of officers and enlisted personnel. The commanding officer, the seasoned Lieutenant Commander Elara Voss, welcomed Douklan personally.

"Ensign Paravides," Lt. Commander Voss greeted him with a crisp salute, her eyes reflecting a blend of authority and warmth. "Welcome aboard the Swift Horizon. I've read the commendations from your time at the academy. Impressive record."

After the Ensign returned the salute, Lt. Commander Voss gestured toward the interior of the ship. "Let's get you settled and acquainted with your quarters. After that, we'll convene in the briefing room. We have a mission on the horizon, and I want everyone on the same page."

Main belt, Aldebaran system

The Swift Horizon glided through the asteroid field. Lieutenant Commander Elara Voss, standing on the bridge with Ensign Douklan Paravides at the helm, surveyed the star-strewn expanse ahead. They were on a mission to root out pirates whose nefarious activities threatened the stability of the interstellar trade routes. Ensign Douklan Paravides manned the analog controls, a dance of switches and levers guiding the ship through the treacherous space.

"Ensign Paravides, set a course for the asteroid field in sector Gamma-9. Intel suggests pirate activity in that region," commanded Lt. Commander Voss. The blast doors slid shut behind her, sealing the bridge for a possible combat situation.

"Aye, Commander," responded Douklan, his hands navigating the tactile controls with a practiced ease.

The bridge, cluttered with analog readouts and small green-lit screens, held an air of gritty practicality. Switches and levers communicated the ship's movements. The ambient light revealed wires snaking through exposed grating, and pipes clung to the metallic walls.

"Prepare for stealth mode," ordered Lt. Commander Voss. The Swift Horizon's exterior lights dimmed, and its engines emitted only a faint hum. The ship became a phantom among the asteroids, blending into the darkness.

The asteroid field, once a serene celestial ballet, now concealed the Swift Horizon as it became an unseen sentinel on the lookout for pirates. Ensign Paravides manipulated the ship's trajectory trying to avoid collisions with the looming rocks.
OOC:
Gimme an Agi+Pilot check, DC10. Be careful with that asteroid over there. =)
In the meantime, silence enveloped the bridge as the ship glided through the shadows. The only sounds were the soft hum of the ship and the occasional click of the controls as they navigated the tight spaces between asteroids.

"Commander, I'm detecting anomalous energy signatures at our eleven o'clock. It’s not a registered vessel." reported the sensor officer, peering into a small green-lit screen.

Lt. Commander Voss leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "Onscreen."

The main viewscreen, used only by military vessels, flickered to life, revealing the unmarked vessel among the asteroids.

"Pirates," muttered Lt. Commander Voss. "Maintain stealth mode but turn the engines on. Ensign Paravides, set an intercept course. We'll catch them off guard."

Trade Era 1229, Day 12
Main belt, Aldebaran system

Ensign Douklan Paravides, his hands deftly manipulating the analog controls, guided the Swift Horizon through the asteroid field. Lieutenant Commander Elara Voss, her eyes fixed on the main view, anticipated the moment when their quarry would reveal itself.

"Steady as she goes, Ensign," Lt. Commander Voss murmured, the tension on the bridge palpable. The dimly lit, cluttered interior of the ship hummed with anticipation, wires casting faint shadows on the metal grating.

As the Swift Horizon edged closer to the anomalous energy signatures, the sensor officer's eyes widened.

"Contact in visual range, Commander."

The main viewscreen revealed the pirate's vessel emerging from the shadowy depths of the asteroid field. It was a haphazard assembly of metal, a stark contrast to the Swift Horizon's utilitarian design. The pirates, caught off guard by the unexpected presence of the Navy ship, hesitated for a moment.

"Lt. Hoss, lock onto their engines but keep weapons offline," ordered Lt. Commander Voss. "Let's give them a chance to surrender before we resort to force. Comms, Open a channel."

A crackling connection was established, and the pirate captain's voice was heard over the radio "Don't shoot. We surrender. We weren't expecting the Navy in this sector."

Lt. Commander Voss, her tone firm, responded, "You ventured into the wrong territory. Shut down your engines and prepare to be boarded."

The pirates, outnumbered and outmatched, complied. The Swift Horizon, under the guidance of Ensign Paravides, positioned itself alongside the surrendered vessel.

Blast doors hissed open as Lt. Commander Voss, flanked by a security detail, donned her helmet and strode purposefully toward the airlock. The clang of magnetic boots echoed in the cramped corridor. Ensign Paravides, still at the helm, monitored the proceedings from the Swift Horizon.

Trade Era 1232, Day 152
Main belt, Aldebaran system

Three years had passed since the successful capture of the pirates among the celestial rocks. The Swift Horizon continued its missions, and within the utilitarian corridors of the ship, Ensign Douklan Paravides had proven himself time and again.

Lieutenant Commander Elara Voss, recognizing Paravides's unwavering dedication and skill, stood before the gathered crew on the bridge. The metallic hum of the ship served as the backdrop to the promotion ceremony.

"Douklan Paravides, for your exceptional service and demonstrated leadership, it is my honor to promote you to the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade," declared Lt. Commander Voss, her voice carrying the weight of acknowledgment.

OOC:
Change of plans, as you're now the only remaining player in the Navy. We will finish your character generation here. This post includes the tour that you rolled (1 year) and the last one (2 years). I rolled the second d20 for you using a real die.
A couple of years after his promotion to Lieutenant, Jr. Grade, Douklan Paravides found himself at the threshold of a new chapter. The Swift Horizon had been his celestial home, but now, a transfer awaited. Lieutenant Commander Elara Voss, a mentor and leader, stood beside Paravides as the ship sailed through the cosmic seas for the ceremony.

"Lieutenant Paravides," declared Lt. Commander Voss, her voice echoing with pride and reassurance, "you have embodied the qualities of leadership and dedication. It is my pleasure to announce your promotion to the rank of Lieutenant and your appointment as the first officer of the Sentinel, one of the newest frigates in the ITC Space Navy. This appointment comes by the order of the Commander of the Seventh Fleet, recognizing your exceptional skills and commitment to duty."

She continued, "The Sentinel will operate on the fringes of known space, engaging in patrol and surveillance, convoy escort, search and rescue, reconnaissance, anti-piracy operations, diplomatic missions, and emergency response.
