Chapter 3 - Revelations

Continued from Chapter 2
Arranging the fragment pieces reveals a configuration that creates a cohesive circular shape if pushed together. The mice don't see anything that hints as to the true purpose of the medallion. All they can tell so far is that it is clearly magical in nature.

What course of action would the mice prefer to take? Should they assemble the pieces together, explore the manor for additional clues, visit Port Black to gather knowledge, question the manor guests, or consider another alternative? All options are open for exploration.
OOC:
Again, the genre confusion will probably continue as we're all too deep into the story now. Sorry!

"Friends, it seems we have some sort of magic at our hands, which - considering the latest developments - might not be entirely friendly towards us. We have to combine the pieces, this cannot be helped - however, I don't see why we should suffer this artefact's power on an empty stomach. Our failure to show up at dinner might also lead to unnecessary suspicion amongst the other guests."

Sky stands up and circles the medallion in pieces on the floor. Once left. Once right. She cannot make much sense of it and continues. "Let us eat and chat and make merry while listening closely to these strange mice's conversations, then put this puzzle together once and for all. Should we survive the consequence - I think Hazel's shed should be our next goal. What say you, friends?" Bay is right. The manor's guests were ...off, just as their host. Hazel, too, is right. The only way to find meaning is to press on.

The blue coated mouse makes for the bathroom to freshen up for dinner, giving the others room to come to a decision.

"Yes! Yes! To all of that!" says an overwrought Bay.

"I didn't want to join the rest of the household for dinner after these awful events, and the strange behaviour of them all - but, yes, it would be best to keep ourselves from unwanted attention."

"And Yes! Let's put this squeaking medallion together after dinner!"

I described today this as the game I'm enjoying most here on GP - and that's with the genre mash-up it involves :)

Dinner is served at the usual time. The mice are presented with a meal featuring fried brussel sprouts and a side of cheese, carefully prepared by the cook, Maya. She says "I’m sorry for the frantic presentation. I haven’t seen Mr. Filmon, and I’m left to do all the work myself."

Mr. Filmon is noticeably absent from the gathering.

The captain is constantly shoving food in his mouth. Sky, Hazel, and Bay all note that he is remarkably skinny for the amount of food he eats.

Miss Melody, full of self-importance, regales everyone with tales of her singing success.

While Mrs. Sprocket discusses ongoing projects around the manor, expressing gratitude for the recently fixed clock.

Pumpkin Jack, having completed his latest painting, seems more relaxed and even inquires about the well-being of the child seen outside. He seems dumbfounded that no one has gone out to make sure the tree that burned down hasn’t caused any harm. He says "I don’t care for those street urchins running around. Still…there must be some basic level of care for the area. Shouldn’t Mr. Filmon be handling this?"

Miss Melody responds "Oh those little ones are always playing tricks. I bet they all live comfortable lives and get such a kick from causing us discomfort. I bet Mr. Filmon is out there now taking care of things."

Count Gregory makes a brief appearance, his aura filling the room with unease. He assures everyone "Just stretching my legs after finally getting some rest." He gives Miss Melody an angry look. Then continues to address the group "Have no fear. I shall return to my quarters presently."

Bay wants to just keep her head down during the meal - she just wants to get through this, and then back upstairs to the medallion. But she forces herself to try and be good company with the other guests, in case somehow it's useful to give the impression that she isn't phased by recent events.

In contrast to Bay, Hazel has no problems whatsoever of being merry. Thanking Maya for the dinner, she waves happily at the count and even winks at the old aristomouse as he strolls by. Held his end of his bargain and thanked her properly. What a splendid chap!

Next she slides a little closer to the captain and asks: "Where is all the food going, that you are eating? Do you have an overactive thyroid? Do you have a chick somewhere? Are you a mama-birdy? Do you have parasites to feed?"

Expecting desert, Hazel wouldn't skip a piece of cake for the world. They had plans tonight, and she would enjoy this dinner and everything it has to offer to the fullest.

The captain, with a hearty chuckle, responds to Hazel's inquiry "Ye never know when the next meal could be yer last, lass. Best savor every bite, or ye might end up like me nothin but ol' bones!"

Hazel discerns a concealed truth in the Captain's words, a subtle jest involving "bones" that only the mischievous sailor fully comprehends. - The captain is attempting to be clever, tell the truth, and withhold information all at once.

"Is it like old Filmon to just disappear before dinner? Seems a bit rude, doesn't it?" Sky looks impressively miffed. Where has the old
codger gone? The shed? Or maybe the burnt tree? They should really investigate the remaining site soon. If Filmon is at either of the two areas, he sure is up to no good.

Sky overhears Hazel teasing the captain and joins them with three glasses of the fine brandy in crystal glasses. She sits down, hands each mouse, the captain and Hazel, a glass careful not to clink them in front of the sailor, then adds: "Old my bones are not, but sometimes fidgety." She takes a big sip. "You wouldn't happen to know a remedy against restless bones now, would you, captain?"

Turning around to grap another piece of cake - just following the captains orders! - Hazel "inadvertently" knocks the sailor's hat off his head with her tail. Glancing suspiciously, she checks if he is still a living mouse. Or now - with his hat removed - do bones become visible?

After an inspecting look, she quickly picks up his hat, removes any dust from it and puts it back on the old sea dog's head. "Oh! I'm so clumsy! Forgive me good sir. Please, please - don't let me bother you." The image of a dismayed mouse, Hazel flutters her eyebrows almost comically.

"A final cure for restless bones sounds too good to be true. You were saying?"

As Hazel knocks off the Captain's hat, a startling transformation unfolds before their eyes. Instead of the old crusty sea captain, a skeleton now occupies the chair. The skeletal voice declares, "That cursed necromouser! His magic is as worthless as a spittoon!"

The shocking sight causes Miss Melody to faint, collapsing backward in her chair. Mrs. Sprocket and Pumpkin Jack scream and hastily exit the room, while Maya remains frozen in the corner, clutching a warm pot in terror.

Retrieving his hat, the skeleton Captain leaps onto the table, brandishing a flintlock pistol. He takes aim at Count Gregory, taunting, "Arr, I wager ye haven't laid eyes on these beauties before! They're the talk of the east, ready to swap out yer old bows and swords of old. Welcome to the new world!" He fires, filling the room with the scent of burning garlic and silver. Count Gregory, having absorbed the full blast, lies on the ground seemingly ok but worse for wear.

Holstering his pistol, the Captain points his cutlass at Sky, Hazel, and Bay. "Yarrr! Ye three shouldn't be meddlin' where ye don't belong. Jus' like that little scallywag, Blossom, roam'n' about, I dealt with that trouble, and I'll do the same for ye." He concludes with a maniacal, evil laugh, standing menacingly on the dining room table in his skeletal form. He has a cutlass in his right hand and in his left hand he holds a spell tablet.

Openmouthed Hazel needs a few heartbeats to rewind in her head what just happened. It had been nothing more than a hunch, but her gut hadn't lied. Even so... Drawing her bow and arrow, she points the pointy bit at the former captain and screams fiercely determined: "Tell us what all of this is, and we let you li... go! Or become bone dust, you filthy old bag of seaweed!" Planting her paws wide, the river mouse is fully committed to fight the skeleton right here and now. But if he wants to spill the cheese on what is going on - a bargain can be struck!

As the captain is revealed, Sky jumps up so fast that her chair falls down behind her. BY the great mouse in the sky! What kind of foul magic is this? She stands so close, she can see right through the hollow places between the bones. Transfixed the mouse gazes at all the other people for a second. They are fleeing. One has been missing since the beginning of the dinner, though.... Is this what that shifty fellow is doing in the cellar?

Before even drawing her sword, she pushes the table in front of her as hard as she can, brandy and candles be damned.

Bay's jaw drops.

What fresh cheesy hell is this here?!?!

No time to think, Bay. Just get STUCK IN....!

As Sky pushes the table from under the skeleton, Bay bends down underneath it and tries to stand up under it as the edge passes over her head - hoping to catapult the skeleton up and off the table across the room towards the fireplace...

As the captain begins, "Arr, I'll spill the beans on whatever ye be wantin' to know..." Sky abruptly disrupts everything.

The table jolts, glasses topple over, spilling their contents, and plates crash onto the floor. Bay attempts to assist and flip the table but it proves to be too heavy.

The captain, taken by surprise, tumbles backward, knocking over candles that extinguish upon hitting the tablecloth. Lying on his back, he grumbles, "Ye'll pay for that," He lifts up his spell tablet and utters the words.

As the captain chants the incantation from the spell tablet, the manor groans ominously, and a surge of water erupts from pipes, buckets, and sinks. A colossal wave crashes through the dining room, sweeping everyone and everything to the ground.
