Chapter 3 - Revelations

Continued from Chapter 2
Arranging the fragment pieces reveals a configuration that creates a cohesive circular shape if pushed together. The mice don't see anything that hints as to the true purpose of the medallion. All they can tell so far is that it is clearly magical in nature.

https://i.imgur.com/ri2T8zB.png

What course of action would the mice prefer to take? Should they assemble the pieces together, explore the manor for additional clues, visit Port Black to gather knowledge, question the manor guests, or consider another alternative? All options are open for exploration.
OOC:
Again, the genre confusion will probably continue as we're all too deep into the story now. Sorry!
Dec 3, 2023 9:09 pm
"Friends, it seems we have some sort of magic at our hands, which - considering the latest developments - might not be entirely friendly towards us. We have to combine the pieces, this cannot be helped - however, I don't see why we should suffer this artefact's power on an empty stomach. Our failure to show up at dinner might also lead to unnecessary suspicion amongst the other guests."

Sky stands up and circles the medallion in pieces on the floor. Once left. Once right. She cannot make much sense of it and continues. "Let us eat and chat and make merry while listening closely to these strange mice's conversations, then put this puzzle together once and for all. Should we survive the consequence - I think Hazel's shed should be our next goal. What say you, friends?" Bay is right. The manor's guests were ...off, just as their host. Hazel, too, is right. The only way to find meaning is to press on.

The blue coated mouse makes for the bathroom to freshen up for dinner, giving the others room to come to a decision.

"Yes! Yes! To all of that!" says an overwrought Bay.

"I didn't want to join the rest of the household for dinner after these awful events, and the strange behaviour of them all - but, yes, it would be best to keep ourselves from unwanted attention."

"And Yes! Let's put this squeaking medallion together after dinner!"

I described today this as the game I'm enjoying most here on GP - and that's with the genre mash-up it involves :)

Dinner is served at the usual time. The mice are presented with a meal featuring fried brussel sprouts and a side of cheese, carefully prepared by the cook, Maya. She says "I’m sorry for the frantic presentation. I haven’t seen Mr. Filmon, and I’m left to do all the work myself."

Mr. Filmon is noticeably absent from the gathering.

The captain is constantly shoving food in his mouth. Sky, Hazel, and Bay all note that he is remarkably skinny for the amount of food he eats.

Miss Melody, full of self-importance, regales everyone with tales of her singing success.

While Mrs. Sprocket discusses ongoing projects around the manor, expressing gratitude for the recently fixed clock.

Pumpkin Jack, having completed his latest painting, seems more relaxed and even inquires about the well-being of the child seen outside. He seems dumbfounded that no one has gone out to make sure the tree that burned down hasn’t caused any harm. He says "I don’t care for those street urchins running around. Still…there must be some basic level of care for the area. Shouldn’t Mr. Filmon be handling this?"

Miss Melody responds "Oh those little ones are always playing tricks. I bet they all live comfortable lives and get such a kick from causing us discomfort. I bet Mr. Filmon is out there now taking care of things."

Count Gregory makes a brief appearance, his aura filling the room with unease. He assures everyone "Just stretching my legs after finally getting some rest." He gives Miss Melody an angry look. Then continues to address the group "Have no fear. I shall return to my quarters presently."

Bay wants to just keep her head down during the meal - she just wants to get through this, and then back upstairs to the medallion. But she forces herself to try and be good company with the other guests, in case somehow it's useful to give the impression that she isn't phased by recent events.
Dec 4, 2023 9:28 am
In contrast to Bay, Hazel has no problems whatsoever of being merry. Thanking Maya for the dinner, she waves happily at the count and even winks at the old aristomouse as he strolls by. Held his end of his bargain and thanked her properly. What a splendid chap!

Next she slides a little closer to the captain and asks: "Where is all the food going, that you are eating? Do you have an overactive thyroid? Do you have a chick somewhere? Are you a mama-birdy? Do you have parasites to feed?"

Expecting desert, Hazel wouldn't skip a piece of cake for the world. They had plans tonight, and she would enjoy this dinner and everything it has to offer to the fullest.

Hazel discerns a concealed truth in the Captain's words, a subtle jest involving "bones" that only the mischievous sailor fully comprehends. - The captain is attempting to be clever, tell the truth, and withhold information all at once.
Dec 4, 2023 10:10 pm
"Is it like old Filmon to just disappear before dinner? Seems a bit rude, doesn't it?" Sky looks impressively miffed. Where has the old
codger gone? The shed? Or maybe the burnt tree? They should really investigate the remaining site soon. If Filmon is at either of the two areas, he sure is up to no good.

Sky overhears Hazel teasing the captain and joins them with three glasses of the fine brandy in crystal glasses. She sits down, hands each mouse, the captain and Hazel, a glass careful not to clink them in front of the sailor, then adds: "Old my bones are not, but sometimes fidgety." She takes a big sip. "You wouldn't happen to know a remedy against restless bones now, would you, captain?"

Turning around to grap another piece of cake - just following the captains orders! - Hazel "inadvertently" knocks the sailor's hat off his head with her tail. Glancing suspiciously, she checks if he is still a living mouse. Or now - with his hat removed - do bones become visible?

After an inspecting look, she quickly picks up his hat, removes any dust from it and puts it back on the old sea dog's head. "Oh! I'm so clumsy! Forgive me good sir. Please, please - don't let me bother you." The image of a dismayed mouse, Hazel flutters her eyebrows almost comically.

"A final cure for restless bones sounds too good to be true. You were saying?"

As Hazel knocks off the Captain's hat, a startling transformation unfolds before their eyes. Instead of the old crusty sea captain, a skeleton now occupies the chair. The skeletal voice declares, "That cursed necromouser! His magic is as worthless as a spittoon!"

The shocking sight causes Miss Melody to faint, collapsing backward in her chair. Mrs. Sprocket and Pumpkin Jack scream and hastily exit the room, while Maya remains frozen in the corner, clutching a warm pot in terror.

Retrieving his hat, the skeleton Captain leaps onto the table, brandishing a flintlock pistol. He takes aim at Count Gregory, taunting, "Arr, I wager ye haven't laid eyes on these beauties before! They're the talk of the east, ready to swap out yer old bows and swords of old. Welcome to the new world!" He fires, filling the room with the scent of burning garlic and silver. Count Gregory, having absorbed the full blast, lies on the ground seemingly ok but worse for wear.

Holstering his pistol, the Captain points his cutlass at Sky, Hazel, and Bay. "Yarrr! Ye three shouldn't be meddlin' where ye don't belong. Jus' like that little scallywag, Blossom, roam'n' about, I dealt with that trouble, and I'll do the same for ye." He concludes with a maniacal, evil laugh, standing menacingly on the dining room table in his skeletal form. He has a cutlass in his right hand and in his left hand he holds a spell tablet.
Dec 5, 2023 2:14 pm
Openmouthed Hazel needs a few heartbeats to rewind in her head what just happened. It had been nothing more than a hunch, but her gut hadn't lied. Even so... Drawing her bow and arrow, she points the pointy bit at the former captain and screams fiercely determined: "Tell us what all of this is, and we let you li... go! Or become bone dust, you filthy old bag of seaweed!" Planting her paws wide, the river mouse is fully committed to fight the skeleton right here and now. But if he wants to spill the cheese on what is going on - a bargain can be struck!

As the captain is revealed, Sky jumps up so fast that her chair falls down behind her. BY the great mouse in the sky! What kind of foul magic is this? She stands so close, she can see right through the hollow places between the bones. Transfixed the mouse gazes at all the other people for a second. They are fleeing. One has been missing since the beginning of the dinner, though.... Is this what that shifty fellow is doing in the cellar?

Before even drawing her sword, she pushes the table in front of her as hard as she can, brandy and candles be damned.

As the captain begins, "Arr, I'll spill the beans on whatever ye be wantin' to know..." Sky abruptly disrupts everything.

The table jolts, glasses topple over, spilling their contents, and plates crash onto the floor. Bay attempts to assist and flip the table but it proves to be too heavy.

The captain, taken by surprise, tumbles backward, knocking over candles that extinguish upon hitting the tablecloth. Lying on his back, he grumbles, "Ye'll pay for that," He lifts up his spell tablet and utters the words.

As the captain chants the incantation from the spell tablet, the manor groans ominously, and a surge of water erupts from pipes, buckets, and sinks. A colossal wave crashes through the dining room, sweeping everyone and everything to the ground.

Bay and Hazel are thrown off balance by the force of the water, while Sky, quick on her feet, grabs a chair to shield herself from the deluge.

The dining room is drenched, and amidst the wet chaos, Sky notices the captain's pistol lying on the floor. However, its efficacy may be compromised by the water. The crazed captain laughs maniacally as he starts to rise from the tabletop.

Sky remains the sole mouse standing in the room.

Going down hard, Hazel still keeps her bow out of water with an outstretched paw. Ready action as in you would be able to strike before he does?

That makes sense to me. I'd even say that you're at advantage, so if you do perform your attack roll two damage dice and choose the highest.
The skeletal captain slowly rises, his bony form towering, but realizing he's at a disadvantage against Sky, he begrudgingly agrees to talk for the time being.

"Arr, ye should know me only desire in life has been the glint of precious treasure, me heartie. I've navigated the vast seas, braving tempests and battling foes, all in pursuit of that gleaming treasure. But not every trove be a worthy prize, and I found meself cursed. This Mr. Filmon, with his sorceries and strange dealings, offered to lift the curse for a king's ransom. Yet, it's naught but a deceiving illusion, a cruel jest upon me skeletal frame. - But mark me words, this manor hides its own riches, and that scallywag Filmon keeps 'em from me grasp! WITHHOLDING TREASURE FROM ME!"

The captain's tone grows more fervent and incensed as he delves into the topic of treasure. His obsession becomes palpable, and there's a hint of potential violence should the conversation persist along this course.

Sky breathes in, then breathes out. She blinks twice, then let's the tip of her sword sink down. She does not sheathe it, but appears to keep her options open for now. "What a mousetard!" she exclaims as much indignation as she can muster before she spits on the wet floor. Hazel and Bay need time to get up, and they still need information.

"Mere illusion? When he offered you a cure? What a scoundrel! What a cheat!" Sky takes a moment to look at her friends and winks at them inconspicuously. "This, oh dauntless captain, cannot stand. And the chaps he got trapped in the dark surely must be fellow unfortunates? What a scoundrel! Tell us how we can help and we shall. No injustice like this can be tolerated among mice!" The blue coated mouse nods at the captain emphatically, but keeps a firm grip on her blade.
Dec 7, 2023 7:19 am
A bedraggled Bay pulls herself up out of the water - she brings her tail around to her front and wrings it out with her hands. She HATES when it's wet and heavier than usual, puts her all off balance!

She's glad Sky is talking with the captain - she'd much rather avoid a fight here. She tries to support Sky in talking with the captain, maybe helping persuade him to help them, to give them more information.

"That's right! It sounds like all of us have an, er, bone to pick with Mr Filmon! Maybe we can go and find him together and give him a serious talking-to!"
Dec 7, 2023 12:01 pm
Listening intently what the captain has to offer, Hazel nods along as her companions voice their outrage — heartfelt or otherwise — against the betrayal of Mr. Filmon. None the less, she wants to know some other things. So the brown mouse tries her best to extract some more information: "Where do we find this necromousing scoundrel? Where is his lair? And how do you get knowledge about the treasure that is hidden in this manor? Do you know something about the gone son?"

Still wet from ear to tail, Hazel is of the opinion, that fighting a wizard could easily be a fatal thing. They would have to come up with a foolproofed plan to have a chance at victory. So the more information they gather, the better.

Reading the captain's intentions proves challenging, given his skeletal visage. Yet, certain traits become discernible. The captain, in his eerie skeletal form, showcases a moral compass swayed by avarice. His unrestrained pursuit of treasure leads him down a path of moral ambiguity, willing to traverse any waters and resort to any deed for the allure of riches. Madness has taken root in his bones, rendering him unpredictable, though not entirely impervious to rationale. While not inherently driven to inflict harm without purpose, his actions are guided more by personal pursuits—be it the quest for treasure or retribution against perceived wrongs.

"Arrr, I've been combing through the library's tomes, but not a clue about the treasure's secret has crossed me path. It's gotta be here, stashed away by that cunning Mr. Filmon. The scallywag's probably keeping it all for himself. He's always lurkin' 'round this manor. Whether rustlin' up trouble in his office, or wanderin' like a lost soul in his beloved courtyard, I know not."

"The tale of the lost lad be of no concern to me; me only interest lies in the treasure tucked away in these walls"

With a sinister grin, the captain gazes at his spell tablet, still intact and not fully expended. His eye sockets fix on the trio before him, and he utters, "Aye, I've got a plan. If he aims to withhold my heart's desire, then I'll snatch away what he holds dear." Slowly, he starts moving toward the door, eyeing the mice with caution, making sure not to expose his back to them.

Alright. That's it. Bay has had ENOUGH of all this NONSENSE!

In the last couple of days we've seen Bay shift from brave, innocent, daring mouse – ready to take on the world and all the strangeness it might bring.

To an overwhelmed, shaken, scared, uncertain mouse - one that has dared to take on that world and its strangeness, and found it to be scarier and more awful, and stranger than she had ever imagined.

But on from there, the mouse who stands with her friends now, has found her way back already to her birthsign, to The Storm - and her wrath and yearning for justice has come back in FORCE.

"Yes, to Filmon's office!" she says, joining the others on their way over to it.

Finding it locked, Bay pounds on the door with her claws and shouts to it:

"Come out here right now, you cursed necromouser! We demand answers! Immediately!"

Bay's enthusiastic attempt to break open the door with her shoulder is effective, but the pain proves overwhelming, causing her to collapse. While she's not dead, she will need some time to recover.

As Sky and Hazel enter Mr. Filmon's office, they find a relatively plain-looking workspace. A writing desk with drawers to explore and papers scattered on top catches their attention. A small bookcase stands to the side of the room. The only distinctive item is an eerie painting hanging on the wall, depicting dancing skeletons around a fire.

Aghast Sky witnesses Bay's unexpected show of force and meets Hazel's eyes as if to ask if she knows what just happened.
Carefully she looks around before setting one foot through the Bay shaped hole, then the other. Twitching tail and ears show her tension in the necromouser's l- still technically locked - room as she kneels down to check on her unconscious friend. She turns her around and makes sure she breathes.
"Bay needs to rest, as do we - I'm sure. Let's see if we can't find anything and make her sacrifice worthwhile." Sky temporarily leaves Bay to have a look at Filmon's study, then plans on bringing her friend to a safe space for some much needed rest.

As Hazel explores the office, she discovers various receipts and documents related to the manor's operation. While going through one of the desk drawers, she notices a concealed compartment. Opening it, she finds a journal belonging to Mr. Filmon. Flipping through the pages, she comes across several revealing entries.

One entry states,
Today, I officially joined the Whiskerweave Enclave. They've promised to impart their mysterious arcane knowledge to me. However, they've tasked me with a mission first. There's an old sea captain in need of a discreet refuge. He's promised a generous payment, which will greatly aid in developing the hotel.

Another entry reveals,
I've uncovered the secret of the manor, and it's unacceptable! While I aim to make this place famous for its eerie atmosphere, this secret threatens to ruin everything. I must devise a way to conceal it.

The final noteworthy entry reads,
I believe I've found a solution to my dilemma. I've crafted a magical chest capable of containing supernatural entities. Now, I need to figure out how to hide and safeguard it from the manor's guests. It must never be released. Perhaps a secluded spot in the courtyard would serve...

Mrs. Sprocket contributes, "Mr. Filmon is truly passionate about this manor. He's constantly discussing his plans to turn it into a grand establishment. He even requested that I design some devices for creating spooky noises and frightening appearances. Yet, one day, he abruptly told me to cease working on them, claiming he'd figured it out himself. Could it be that he discovered it by creating undead creatures?" A hint of fear colors her expression.
Dec 12, 2023 3:24 pm
After successfully finding and reading all of these diary entries, Hazel runs up to her friends and excitedly shows them what she has found. Calling out: "I knew it from the beginning! But now is the right point in time to free the shed from its lock and get to solve the mystery of the manor!" Punching her mouse fist high up, Hazel tries to motivate her fellow mice to storm the gates of ... the shed and to finish the skeletons. With whom the brown archer furred still got a bone to pick!
OOC:
Huzza!

Let us devise a cunning plan how to get rid of the skeletons.
Have we seen bear traps? Does Mrs. Sprocket have a considerable amounts of lamp oil? Nets? Tripping hazards? ...
Dec 12, 2023 3:58 pm
OOC:
The manor relies solely on oil lamps and candles for illumination. During the earlier excursion to assist Blossom, Mr. Filmon located a sizable net and some rope in storage, and these items should still be accessible. While there are no animal traps on hand, Mrs. Sprocket possesses the skill to craft a variety of objects using commonplace materials found in the manor.

It's reasonable to assume that Mr. Filmon is currently in the vicinity beneath the woodshed. However, it's important to note that he won't remain there indefinitely. Thus, any devised plans should be executed promptly.

Bay straightens her increasingly bedraggled outfit - being overwhelmed by water and then bursting through a wooden door haven't done it any favours. She wants to keep pushing on this! Let's finish this now before things get even worse!

"Let us go to confront that necromouser now! Before he has a chance to get away. While we can catch him red-handed with his skeletal minions. Let's see him try and bluff and bluster his way out of that!"

"I'll run up to my room, bring down my trident."

"Pumpkin Jack, will you come with me and then help me gather oil, and torches, and flame to bring with us? Perhaps the skeletons can be harmed by flame and oil?"

"Mrs. Sprocket – could you help us bring along the rope and net Mr Filmon brought out earlier? I'd hope that a net would be just the ticket for entrapping and holding a bunch of skeletons - all those ribs and bones getting stuck within the netting?"

"Hazel, Sky, anything else to bring other than our weapons?"
Dec 13, 2023 7:09 pm
GM
After Bay issues her instructions, the mice spring into action. Pumpkin Jack swiftly gathers three oil lamps and a set of torches, while Mrs. Sprocket ventures into storage, emerging with the required rope and net.
Dec 15, 2023 10:12 am
"Wooow- wooow!" Hazel intones raising her paws in a calming way. "Hold there for a minute." As the only mouse in here who had faced the horrors of the skeletons, the brown furred archer isn't keen on standing tiny claw to bony toe again with those grim bastards. Better to keep thinking about it a few more moments, before having to do that!

"The courtyard contains just two entrances, as fare as we know. We lock and block those." the rivermouse begins to explain her idea. Then continues:
- go upstairs to the windows/balconies,
- let us hide and be really quiet until the necromouser has left the shed,
- throw a net on Mr. Filmon when he leaves the shed and tie him up as good as possible,
- if the skeletons appear, throw at them the oil flasks and some torches.
&
- keep water at hand; just in case. (A clever mouse learns from her tree-burning mistakes!)

The safety of the four balcony windows towards the yard would greatly improve their chances to get out of this unharmed, while still providing enough access to shoot and throw at anyone in the small garden. When the owner is caught, they can solve this mysterie most likely.

The sole flaw Hazel sees at the moment is, that if Mr. Filmon notices that something isn't right, he could run back into the shed and turn this whole situation against them by barricading inside the shed and what lies below.

"But no plan is fool-proofed and a mouse has to seize chance by its ears and ride it like its stolen!" the young adventurer calls out.
OOC:
If someone has a better idea, or wants to change this plan a bit, please do so. :)
Dec 15, 2023 3:13 pm
"That sounds like one of those old 'best laid schemes o’ Mice' of which we hear tell, Hazel! I'm with you on that - and will take up station on one of those balconies with the net.

I'm a wee bit shaken and battered from some of our recent unpleasantnesses here, so am better off out of reach of any skeletons...

And as a sparrow rider I know a thing or two about throwing nets down on our foes from above!"
Dec 16, 2023 12:23 am
OOC:
This is how I understand the plan so far. Please make corrections. - It looks like Bay and Hazel will both need to make a DEX save.

Pumpkin Jack will barricade one entrance to the courtyard, and Mrs. Sprocket will barricade the other. Bay will be ready with the net on the second floor and fling it down at Mr. Filmon when he comes out of the shed. Hazel will also be on the second floor with her bow and arrow at the ready.

Bay is talking with the others about what they're going to try here - and as it becomes clear that this would work better if she went up on the shed and dropped the net from above she's like

"Alright! You know what? Bring it! Meek mice never got nowhere with monsters like this!"

Bay is returning to her fired-up wrathful self - she's gonna be up there on that shed roof, and she is going to drop that net DOWN on that Filmon-shaped piece of excrement and if that doesn't work she's going to drop DOWN on him herself, trident raised and ready...!
Dec 16, 2023 1:51 pm
OOC:
Ok, Bay is going to hide in the courtyard on top of the shed. She'll toss the net when Mr. Filmon leaves the woodshed. If she misses, she's leap down on top of him.

Hazel will be on the second floor with her bow at the ready.

Will Sky be in the courtyard with Bay, on the first floor with Mrs. Sprocket and Pumpkin Jack, or on the second floor with Hazel?

Sky has stayed out of the discussion. She trusts Bay and Hazel to come up with a plan that considers their skills perfectly. She also is very aware of her firends' exhaustion after their latest adventures with the ancient pirate, so she let's them choose. As they start to get ready, she nods and adds:

"I shall be in the courtyard then and make sure Filmon doesn't dig himself in.""Sky has a sinister expression on her face. I'll climb atop the shed and when the door opens, I will jam something into the door or the hinge to keep it from closing properly. Then I'll fight the bastard with everything I've got ... if it comes to that. First I'd really like to know what has happened to the heir of this place and about the contents of Filmon's necro-box-...-thing."

Pumpkin Jack secures one end of the courtyard, and Mrs. Sprocket takes care of the other. Hazel positions herself on the second floor, bow drawn, overlooking the courtyard. Sky and Bay station themselves on the woodshed, anticipating Mr. Filmon's emergence.

As time seems to stretch on endlessly, dusk begins to settle, and finally, Mr. Filmon steps out of the woodshed. Bay seizes the moment and hurls the net at him, landing it perfectly. Caught in the net, Mr. Filmon flails, attempting to free himself. Sky reacts swiftly, wedging something in the door to prevent it from closing fully, ensuring that if Mr. Filmon escapes, he won't be able to shut himself back in.

Indignant, Mr. Filmon bellows, "What is the meaning of this? I demand that you set me free!"
Dec 17, 2023 5:41 pm
"The time of demands has passed, Mr Filmon." Sky jumps down the short way towards the necromouser and tightens the net. While she immediately looks for scrolls or weapons on the indignant mouse, she says: "The Whiskerweave Enclave might not be pleased, but you see ... we need answers - once and for all."

Sky lets her right hand glide towards the hilt of her sword.
"You do not have to cooperate, of course. I am sure we can grant you the same mercy others have granted young Blossom. Your choice, Filmon." Her luminous eyes fix on Filmon's with a focused, albeit slightly eerie stare.

If it would give Sky advantage on the WIL roll, Bay would jump down from the shed to try and restrain Filmon further, to make the thrashing less, to make it easier for Sky to work out what's on the tablets.

But if that'd be a STR save then Bay won't do it (given they have 0 HP).

Trapped within the net, Mr. Filmon pleads desperately, "No, don't open it! I've locked a spirit inside the chest! It's nothing that concerns you. This manor is haunted, or it was haunted. I knew that when I took over as owner. I wanted to harness that ability to bring in more guests. Everyone loves a good fright, and I was going to use that to attract mice here. I sought out the Whiskerweave Enclave to see if they could help me, and they decided to teach me some... um.. tricks. But I had to keep my part of the deal and harbor that crazed skeleton pirate. He's obsessed with treasure and thinks there is some hidden here. It's driving him mad. Please don't open that chest! It will ruin everything!"
Dec 18, 2023 6:00 pm
"The spirit - it is the lost son, isn't it?" calls Hazel from above. Didn't that fat mouse, yes Gideon, tell them about a treasure? Narrowing her black eyes the archer continues further: "These aren't the only skeletons in your closet Filmonius! What is it, that we'll find under the shed, by the pool and your starved friends? Speak up!" She isn't convinced at all that the owner of this manor is telling them enough to buy his life with it.

Surprisingly, Mr. Filmon doesn't appear to be lying.

"Yes, yes, it's that stupid lost son. I thought he would be more useful, but he had the exact opposite effect of what I wanted! That STUPID SPIRIT RUINED EVERYTHING. I hid him in the basement so that no one would let him out. I don't know about the treasure if that is what you're hinting at. I couldn't find anything about it. I thought the captain might have better luck with that. The skeletons under the shed are some of the captain's old crew that I used to guard it. Don't tell the captain! He'll be furious. He still has his ghost ship, and he has the power to control the ocean waves. If he finds out, he might try to channel something and destroy everything!"

At the mention of the boy spirit, Mr. Filmon becomes more animated and angry. "There isn't much to tell. I learned that this manor couldn't keep owners because of rumors that it was haunted. Then I did some of my own research and discovered that it indeed was. There are ways of dealing with such things, and the Whiskerweave Enclave promised to teach them to me. We even worked out a deal with Captain Mortimer to help fund the purchase of the manor. When I finally found the spirit and flushed him out, I realized that he wasn't something that I wanted around. I decided that I would take matters into my own hands and work my magic to create a truly scary ambiance, so I trapped the spirit into a magical chest in the basement. Then I took some measures to make sure no one could ever free him. I've worked too long and too hard for that spirit to ruin everything I created!"
Dec 19, 2023 7:50 pm
Bay walks over to Sky and whispers:

"It seems like Filmon is telling the truth, at least as he sees it..?"

"I wonder - if I go up to our room and connect the medallion pieces together, maybe THAT offers some access to this so-speculated-about treasure? It feels like there is at least one missing piece in this puzzle, and that medallion might be it!"

"Will you watch Filmon while I go and try this out?"
OOC:
Yay Internet this evening!
Dec 19, 2023 8:41 pm
Sky nods. "Be careful" she tells her friend, before focusing on Filmon, once more.

"Could you actually break the pirates' curse? And what would happen if somebody opened the box? Maybe we could help you secure it...no need to get any of the fine people here hurt. Why not get rid of it once and for all?"

Mr. Filmon admits, "I can't do anything to break the pirate's curse. I can only help him look like he's normal. If you open the box, the spirit will be free to roam this manor once again! It will reveal itself to guests, and who knows what it will ultimately do. I don't know how to get rid of that foul spirit." He quickly, perhaps too quickly, agrees with any plan to further keep the magical chest closed.

She is in two minds - maybe it's a good idea to show the medallion to Filmon, maybe that will push him to some new revelations, some new decisions...

But maybe it will push him to shut down and stop talking...

Sky is doing such a good job at questioning Filmon, learning things from him, that Bay decides to come over, stand next to her friend, and whisper in her ear:

"The medallion fragments seemed to have been magically repaired - and it is now a single solid piece. Maybe it's the key to the chest?"

And Bay flashes a glance at the completed medallion in her bag to Sky.

"You've got this, friend Sky - you've been so strong, and brave, and convincing and insightful here, so good and working out what is going on..."

(Bay blushes slightly as she says this.)

"I leave it to you and your very competent paws, and whiskers, and brains, to get what we need out of Filmon here..."
Dec 20, 2023 11:02 am
Hazel rolls her eyes in an ostentatiously exaggerated manner as she notices Bay's advances.

The brown archer clears her throat extra loudly and asks with a mocking tone: "Then let's go down and see what else we can find there, shall we?" in that a "Take a room, you two" clearly resonates. Addressing explicitly Mr. Filmon, she continues: "And hold back your bony friends, or you won't fare well."

Next Hazel takes a last look around if the capitan shows his shriveled whiskers, before coming down and steeling herself for a second encounter with the skeletons.

The trio of adventurous mice release Mr. Filmon from the net, and with Sky's sword at his back, he leads them into the woodshed. He flips over the rug and deftly inputs the code to open the trap door. They descend the stairs slowly, Bay close to Sky, lighting a torch to illuminate their path. The air becomes heavy with the unmistakable scent of dampness and decay as they venture into the depths.

A room unfolds before them, centered around a murky pool that reaches waist-high. The pool's sides are slick with glistening green algae, and on the left sits a skeletal figure, one leg straight, head lolled to the side. Skeletal fingers protrude from the pool, suggesting that both skeletons have returned to their initial positions. Mr. Filmon guides the trio to the right side of the pool, steering clear of the skeletons, and they pass through into another room.

This room is plain, with a torch hanger on the wall, a stool, and a large chest. The chest stands out with its multicolored appearance and silver and steel banding. A circular depression replaces a keyhole on the chest. Mr. Filmon seizes the moment to plead with the group, "Please, don't open the chest. I can offer you money, or perhaps there's something else you desire? I only wish to manage my manor in peace."

"You're a necromouser now... Can you bring her back from the dead? Is there anything you can do to make up for this awful deed you allowed to happen?"

Keeping to the background as Bay confronts the mouse-house owner with the gruesome fate of poor Blossom, Hazel still is of the opinion that a little chaos is better than letting such a deed go unpunished. He claimed to have grand plans of turning this place into the eeriest, scariest, most talked-about hotel in the world. He wanted to build a grand reputation, and everyone would flock here. I tried to cooperate, genuinely did, but he insisted that I wasn't scary enough, that I couldn't frighten a flea! One day, he tricked me into this chest. Then, every day, he would come down and say the most dreadful things, like how no one would ever see me again, and I'd spend an eternity locked in this chest. I would let out the most dreadful wails. "What a most dreadful trick." Sky states, looking at Filmon with little but contempt. Then, in a lighter tone, she addresses the spirit: "I feel for you. This is your house, right?" She does not want to invoke the dead boy's name. He hasn't given Hazel his name, yet. He must be the lost son, though. Still maybe it is wiser not to call him by the name they have been given.

"We were told that this house contained secrets and treasure - right now, we try to solve its secrets and mend part of what is broken."
Between the captain and Filmon, Sky has no clue what to believe about potential treasure. Maybe the boy might share information with those who captured his captor? "Maybe he can help us find out what happened to Blossom - maybe she is herself already a ghost..."

Bay is overwhelmed by sadness at this thought. She just can't shake the feeling of guilt and fury that they could have SAVED that young mousling and yet didn't and that squeaking beast of a captain destroyed her and they also just let him get away....!?!?

"I'm so sorry for you. That sounds awful" says Bay out loud, meaning every word of it.

"But maybe - maybe - we can help you with that. Maybe you can't escape on your own but maybe we can help make it happen!"

"And while we try and make that happen - are you able to travel out of the building into the grounds of the manor?"

"Because we saw, just hours ago, another child mouse that we think may also have gotten in trouble with the mushrooms. Maybe you could go out, look with us to see if we can find some trace of her...? Maybe she is out there... already as a ghost..."
and again the sadness swells up in Bay at the thought of this.

Gideon
The ghost is about to say more when you all hear hurried footsteps echo through the stairwell, and Gideon appears, breathless and gasping for air. "Need to leave. Summoned back. Large magical energy. Danger! Heard from Count Gregory in Port... you're still here." Confusion crosses his face as he spots Mr. Filmon and the ghost. Despite the confusion, urgency persists in his plea. "Very little time."

It appears that something may happen soon. You have a choice to follow Gideon, stay here an help/talk with the Ghost, spend time asking questions of Gideon if he’ll stay, or something else entirely.
Dec 23, 2023 8:51 pm
"Gideon?!" exclaims Bay!

"What in the squeaky hell are you doing back here? Why is there so little time??
Dec 23, 2023 9:32 pm
"This here is a necromouser. He held captive the ghost and former heir of this manor. There may be treasure to be found and we've got a lead. Also a zombie pirate captain might show up any minute. The tinkerer and the artist are still upstairs. Anybody else left. Your turn." Sky tries to summarise as quickly as possible and now looks at Gideon expectantly.
Dec 23, 2023 10:00 pm
Looking at Gideon with one raised eyebrow Hazel follows the conversation with interest. Her tail twitches unconsciously as she listens.

Gideon
Gideon, catching his breath, responds urgently, "A massive magical disturbance on the water. Something to do with a pirate ship. I had to warn everyone, but I didn't expect you all still here. We must leave now! I think you’ll see what I mean when we’re outside." He glances at Mr. Filmon and the ghost, registering the situation.

Gideon, between breathes says "Guess I needed more exercise. Picked the right team, didn't I? You are all great" He looks at Mr. Filmon and the ghost, then asks "Should he be tried for magic crimes?" Gideon, though out of breath, remains alert and ready for action.
Dec 24, 2023 9:58 am
"Oh, he has for SURE committed crimes here - magical and mundane!" pipes up Bay.

"Indeed, he has more than a paw, I expect, in this piratical trouble you're describing..."

"I don't want to just leave him here - who knows what extra mouschief he will get up to if he gets the chance to be on his own..."

"Instead, let's give him a chance to atone for some of his crimes - we'll bring him with us!"

With that Bay ties Filmon's feet - in addition to his hands - and hucks the bound mouse around her shoulders.

"Show us the way, Gideon!"
Dec 25, 2023 9:23 am
Listening intently, Hazel thinks by herself, that bringing Filmon may be an excellent idea. The furry of the captain will be directed at the failed necromouser and by them some time.

Turning to Bay, the archer pipes up: "Let us visit the tree first if possible. Look for the treasure as quickly as we can." Here she glances at their newfound, uncorporeal friend. "Then we hold something in our paws to start negotiating - if possible."

Hazel seems ready to race to the tree as fast as possible. Helping Bay with doors and suchlike, she advises Mrs. Sprocket and Jack to leave, as things might get a bit uncomfortable very quick.

OOC:
Mr. Filmon had a regular dagger and two spell tablets. Gideon deciphers them for you without having to make a WIL save.

Animate Bones
You can create [DICE] skeletal thralls from nearby corpses. They are stupid, but obey your verbal commands.

Grease
Cover [DICE] x 6" area in slippery, flammable grease. Creatures in the area must make a DEX save or fall prone.
Gideon assists in deciphering Mr. Filmon's spell tablets. Then he recommends a makeshift gag to prevent further mischief. He uses a handkerchief to secure Filmon's mouth. Gideon also quickly casts a healing spell from a tablet. It restores Bay's HP, but not her strength. The spell tablet almost backfired which doesn't make the rest of the group feel at ease about Gideon's ability to harness magical energy.

Mrs. Sprocket and Pumpkin Jack hastily depart the manor. The ghost accompanies the group to the front door but can't cross the threshold.

Silently making their way to the burned tree, the most probable location for treasure, Hazel steps on a disfigured gold coin amidst the debris, offering hope of more discoveries. Peering through the wreckage, the group spots a ship on the water, manned by skeletal figures. On land, a peculiar ritual unfolds with skeletons tossing trinkets into a green-flamed bonfire, causing the flames to momentarily turn pink and creating unnaturally large waves in the sea behind the ship.

Gideon whispers that the captain aims to create a massive wave by sacrificing magical trinkets, but he'll need something far greater for the destruction of the manor. That's when Sky notices mice tied up near the ritual, guarded by another skeleton. This new information causes Gideon to somberly explain part of the captain's curse. "The captain can turn mice into permanent members into his crew whether they want to join or not. Those mice forever become skeletons under his command. He can then use their lost life force for his spell!"

As the gravity of the situation sinks in, Bay recognizes one of the captives—Blossom.
OOC:
In Summary

Sky, Hazel, Bay, Gideon, and Mr. Filmon (tied up) are hiding by burnt tree debris.

They are not too far from the magical campfire ritual which has 4 skeletons and Captain Mortimer.

Somewhat distanced from the campfire is an additional skeleton guarding three tied up mice. One of which is Blossom.

There is a ship on the water manned by 2 skeletons.

The only way to and from the ship is via a small boat that's tied up near the campfire.

Captain Mortimer is finishing up his ritual. Then he'll take the three mice to the ship to complete it which will then create a massive tidal wave that will propel the ship towards the manor.
Dec 26, 2023 8:42 am
"Gideon!" whispers Bay urgently.

"Use that Grease spell tablet! Cast it around that campfire! That will slow down the Captain, the skeletons there, and it's flammable - hopefully a spark from the fire will light it and they'll all go up in flames!"

"And in case that doesn't instantly happen, I'll throw a torch at that space immediately after you cast the spell!"

"While you're doing that, I'm going to get ready to deal with that other skeleton over by the captives... I'll fix this big ol' fish-hook I used to use while sparrow riding to pick up and carry things around with us, under the belly of my flapping birdy steed - I'll attach it to this rope, and be ready to throw it at that other skeleton, catch it, pull it over, trip it up..."

Nodding along, Hazel really likes the set them on fire part of this plan. Bringing her bow back into her paws, the archer makes ready to shoot the skeleton by the captives. Maybe this would weaken it enough to help Bay with her next step.

Gideon
Gideon begins reading the spell tablet...

A shimmering ball of magical energy materializes above the campfire. Gradually, it transforms into a substantial bubble of grease that descends onto the fire below, erupting in a fiery explosion that engulfs the immediate surroundings.

As the grease-covered fire explodes around Captain Mortimer and the nearby skeletons, an unnatural shriek echoes from the damaged skeletal figures. Although still standing, the skeletons show the effects of the fiery assault. Captain Mortimer, furious and on fire, quickly extinguishes the flames on himself using his hat. His attention turns towards the burnt tree as he commands, "Lads, check that tree!" The four damaged skeletons, still aflame, shamble towards the burnt tree.

The lone skeleton guarding the tied-up mice remains vigilant, while Captain Mortimer strides purposefully toward the captives. With the initiative in your favor after the surprise attack, it's now your turn to describe your next actions.
OOC:
The Skeletons making your way each have 1 HP remaining and 9 STR each. The unhurt skeleton has 4 HP. Captain Mortimers HP is a secret. Every enemy is armed with a sword.

Bay has quickly attached her fish-hook to the rope they have with them, and hurls it over towards the unharmed skeleton by the captives. The aim is to make it attach to one of the skeleton's bones, make the skeleton fall over, and if the scene geometry allows it, pull the skeleton on through the burning grease.
OOC:
Maybe a DEX roll? I'll roll one anyway in case that's how you'd call it. Maybe with advantage, given this is the kinda thing Bay would have done a lot of while sparrow riding, and is using her fancy favourite hook for doing this. But that's not really a feature of the scene, so I assume that doesn't bring advantage.

Simultaneously, Bay skillfully employs a rope and hook, securing it to the skeleton's ribs and yanking it forcefully towards the ground. As a result, Hazel's arrow only manages to graze the skeleton. The undead creature, reacting with a futile attempt to cut the rope using its sword, is interrupted as Bay gives a powerful tug on the rope.

I love the incorporation of the backstory to add to the character. It makes total sense. Let's do it this way. The hooked skeleton firmly embeds its bony hands into the ground, preventing Bay from pulling it closer. With a swift motion, it takes its sword and severs the rope that was attached to it.

Meanwhile, Captain Mortimer effortlessly lifts Blossom and slings her over his shoulder.

In the midst of the chaos, Sky skillfully slashes at one of the skeletons as it draws near. Despite taking damage and stumbling, the resilient undead recovers and retaliates, lunging forward to strike Sky and hitting her for 2 damage.

Gideon finds himself flanked by two skeletons. While one manages only a minor graze (1 damage), the other lands a serious blow (5 damage). Emitting a loud howl of pain and anger, Gideon charges forward like a bull, knocking the skeleton in front of him to the ground.

The last remaining skeleton focuses its attention on Hazel, slashing at her fur with its sword and dealing 2 damage.

Sky dashes towards Gideon and fells the skeleton behind him with one mighty slash of her sharp blade. Losing their ... friend?...taskmaster?...well, losing Gideon just won't do right now. She is aware of Blossom being mousenapped, of course, but guesses the distance is too great to catch the captain and save the adventuring mouse at the same time. With all her might and all the air left in her lung she cries: "Hold on, Captain! Hold on for palaver and trade! We know where the treasure is. We have the traitor, Filmon. Come back here, and we'll make a deal!"

Although she has no intentions to aid such a despicable pirate, Sky needs him to bring Blossom back into their reach. This is their second chance to save the pup and they have to succeed, come what may.

As Gideon prepares to respond to Bay's command, Sky's words reach the ears of the Captain. He halts near the rowboat, stopping just short of boarding. Sky has deftly tapped into the Captain's deeper interest—treasure. In response, the Captain calls back, a hint of suspicion in his voice, "How be I knowin' this ain't some clever trick? Bay turns to the others and speaks quietly to them:

"We've got to get the captives away from them!"

"I don't think we can trust the captain to release them, even if we give him what he wants - he'll just take them back to his boat and carry out that awful ritual he is planning."

"One of us could try and creep up behind him, while the others keep him distracted, and then we try pushing him over, pulling Blossom away from him, and hitting him again with grease and fire...?"

"But that feels like a very risky plan - any other ideas?"
Jan 6, 2024 12:23 pm
Lending Bay an ear, Hazel whispers back while her tail swishes around without pause: "Yeah, let us bring an end to this cluster-trap." Sky grips the handle of her blade with intent and nods her agreement.

Turning towards the captain, the brown archer tries to summon an artsy tremble in her voice as she shouts out: "Don't hurt them - they are mice you're playing with!" Adjusting her voice for a moment while hanging her head in deafet: "Take the necromouser, but let the rest of them go! You win!"

Turning to the side, the rivermouse tripples a few steps to the side, getting a better line of sight towards the remaining skeleton, while she whispers to Gideon: "Keep your scrolls at the ready."

Sky fetches Filmon with a dramatic gesture and brings him forward by the tip of her sword. Much like a pirate making a prisoner walk the plank.

Putting her hand before her small snout, Hazel shakes with laughter while thinking about that.

Bay is overwhelmed to see that they have managed to save Blossom!

Bay runs over to the mice children and squats down to talk with them.

She checks them out for any wounds, tries to treat any she does find, and promises them that she will do everything she can to make sure they get back safely to their adults. She just ignores the captain and Filmon as they sail off.

The first thing she'll do after this scene is help the children back to their homes, then she'll search for any treasure with her friends here at the manor, see if there's anything they can do to help the ghost, and then off for more adventures with her friends. Maybe Gideon and the organisation he is part of will offer them more exciting things to be getting up to?

Some general notes about the story
OOC:
Mr. Filmon and Captain Mortimer would disappear to potentially show up in another adventure. Although, Mr. Filmon's life isn't going to be very pleasent as part of the captain's crew.

The treasure is/was hidden in the old tree. The ghost's father thought it would be a good place since it was infested with centipedes. He didn't think anyone would go snooping around in there.

Much of the treasure is melted or destroyed. However, the adventurers would be able to recovery quite a bit. Three items are magical which would be randomly determined by each player.

Unfortunately, the ghost is still a ghost in the manor and the way to release him from his predicament is unknown. However, the ghost isn't particularly sad. It loves playing tricks on people who come to the manor.

Gideon would officially extend an offer to the mice to join The Arcane Order of the Curious Mouse. He becomes the official guest giver, but he isn't particularly good as his job. It's a mysterious as to why he even got accepted in the first place.

There is no difficulty reunited the tied up mice with their families.

Mistaking them for souvenirs, the guests pocketed the pieces and used them for their own purposes.
