... and, grabbing a loose end of the coil, he tosses the rest of it into the false floor. "Albertus, if you can hear me down there, grab the rope!" Kragga braces for a sudden tug of the rope, setting his feet into the ground and wrapping his end of the rope around his hand a few times. Albertus won't be light, especially given his armor and weapons, and he prepares himself the best he can.

Replacing his own rope back into his pack, as his half-orc friend has the matter now well in hand. Hopefully a hand that won’t sustain much rope burn!
Coming up now. Thanks for the lift!
Albertus grabs the rope in gauntleted hands. And with knightly resolve, Albertus attempts noble ascent!

Aanbo sets his feet apart to try and establish a good base, despite being on the stairs. "It sounds like people downstairs need help, and we're outnumbered," he says to Ogbar. "Perhaps a fighting retreat?"

As the figures reach out for them, Aanbo does his best to parry and block each attack with his staff and elbow.
OOC:

Theran, unsure what he can do with the enemies at range other than close with them... but not wanting to block the stairway in case his companions at the top need to pull back... he grits his teeth and casts a quick spell to make ready.
OOC:
Bonus Action to cast Shillelagh on his staff.

Theran will position himself by the foot of the stairs.

Ready action to make a melee attack. Trigger: First of the enemies to come down the stairs and enter Theran's threat range.

"Fiddlesticks!" Joseph yells, and Xana adds her warning: "Oh no Ogbar, Aanbo, watch out behind you!"

Kragga drops the end of a rope into the floor, where it disappears. Albertus sees the rope and hears "Albertus, if you can hear me down there, grab the rope!" just as the chandelier plunges through the floor, too. Albertus, roll a DEX saving throw, DC 15. On a success, Albertus is only dealt a glancing blow by a gold ornament and loses 2 HP. Otherwise, he's struck by one of the chandelier's arms and loses 4 HP.

The figures upstairs walk slowly, but their arms are blurs of motion as they try to pummel Ogbar and Aanbo. The dwarf notices that the one attacking him looks like it had only just had its throat cut: the skin is supple, there is no sign of decay or rigor mortis, but at the same time the blood staining the front of its robes is black from age. "It sounds like people downstairs need help," Aanbo notes to Ogbar. Using his staff, the monk fends off the first few blows from the silent figures whose eyes are not focused: pupils unmoving, sclera glowing, but the punches keep coming. Knocking an arm aside, the dwarf slips a jab in and connects with figure 1's face. The head snaps back, but otherwise there is no reaction. "And we're outnumbered." Swinging the staff around, Aanbo suddenly slides it forward, thrusting the end into figure 1's neck. The blow connects and figure 1 takes half a step backward, but the arms never stop windmilling. "Perhaps a fighting retreat?"

Theran calls upon the power of the forest and the land and his staff grows thicker, vibrating with green energy. He waits patiently for his companions to retreat down the stairs so he can take a whack at these glowing goons.

Ogbar, facing off against the expressionless figure 2, half seen in the indirect, flickering light from below, yells as the first blows land. He ignores the heavy punches, hauls back with his weapon, and cleaves down into its shoulder with his greataxe. Figure 2 staggers but continues to swing savagely at the barbarian.

The angle is bad for a bow, shooting up at the head - figure 1 - he can only just see over a railing, but nevertheless, Joseph's arrow catches figure 1 in the side of the head. It staggers to one side, the shaft sticking grotesquely out of the temple just behind its glowing right eye. It bounces off of the one fighting Ogbar and silently stands up again, still trying to land blows on Aanbo. But then Xana's blast hits it right in the face. Figure 1 bounces off of the other one again, rebounds, and slumps motionless at last, one arm hanging over the railing, its eyes finally dark.

On his turn Albertus can examine the chandelier and retrieve the gold ornaments from it, or he can climb out of the pit using the rope.

As Ogbar is pulling his huge axe from the shoulder of figure 2, it still attempts to land a solid blow on him, but the barbarian ignores all the feeble impacts. Figure 3, which was standing in the second rank, steps past its fallen comrade and attacks Aanbo with the same unblinking, dispassionate intensity, taking him with a lunging punch! Aanbo loses 7 HP.
OOC:
One of the optional rules we're using in this game is the Injuries rule. The chance for an injury from a critical hit is 10%. I'll have you guys roll this for your PCs when it happens.
@CancerMan, please roll percentile dice for an injury (1-10 means Aanbo sustains an injury of some kind). Roll high!

Eek! My mistake! No, we're not. I'll amend that in the original post. Aanbo only took 7 damage.

Our knightly fellow climbs out. Hitting his No me head right up against the blooming chandelier! Oh the horror!

Once more or less safely surface-side, Al exclaims, Thank you Kragga! I thought I was, as we say in Keolish, a goner!

Drawing trusty blade, Al enters melee, attacking the nearest banal figure!

Going into round two, Aanbo and Ogbar are on the second-floor landing at the top of the stairs, about 8 paces above the 1st floor entrance room where Albertus, Joseph, Kragga, Theran, and Xana are standing between the magic doorway with the inscribed phoenix symbol and the stairway leading up to the second floor. The distance to run up the stairs and get up to Aanbo and Ogbar is about 14 paces for Theran; a little more for the others who are further from the stairs. The stairs' bannister becomes a railing at the top of the stairs; the 1st-floor group's view of their friends and their assailants is partially obscured by that railing, so that only the heads of Aanbo, Figure 3, and Figure 5 are in the torchlight ~9 paces above them. They can vaguely see the shapes of Ogbar, Figure 2, and Figure 4 behind the others, but they are not directly illuminated by the light of the torch. The larger members of the party can move about 12 paces with a single move action, the smaller ones can move 10.

Declare your actions for the second turn. The five characters downstairs are not starting the turn close enough to any enemy to engage in melee without moving first, and Aanbo and Ogbar are blocking the way. Enterprising characters could mount the stairs and climb over the railing to access the second floor.
[ +- ] Crude sketch of the situation at the start of round two

Kragga (7/8)
Aanbo (4/11)
Theran (8/8)
Ogbar (14/14)
Joseph (6/8)
Xana (8/9)
Albertus (9/13)
Heralds 2 - 5 (?)

Ooh, that's a very good point! Roll your sneak attack for round one; it may be that, if your sneak attack damage was enough, Figure 1 would have dropped, so Xana's blast would have targeted Figure 3 instead. If your round one sneak attack is enough, I'll update the text and totals accordingly.

Aanbo reels from the impact of the figure's fist. "We've got to go, now!" he says in an attempt at finality, hoping his words can get through to Ogbar. At the same time, he doesn't want to abandon his raging barbarian friend.

He considers a thrust of his staff into the nearest figure's face, but he realizes that they never reacted like living creatures, so instead Aanbo opts to parry any attack that comes his way.
OOC:
Action to Dodge.

Aanbo is at 4/11 HP.

Hm. Somehow my declaration deleted from my previous post. Joseph will move ten paces to get up the stairs a little bit before shooting again.

Albertus is moving and then attacking his nearest foe, per previous rolls. Appreciated!

Kragga cringes as the falling chandelier clocks his friend in the temple. He is impressed that he doesn't lose his grip, and slaps Albertus on the back in congratulations after helping him out of the pit. After all, the young knight is an eager fighter and he makes an excellent meat shield bulwark against foemen. In case he's a bit dizzy, he grabs him by the shoulders and aims him in the right direction for charging the stairs.

Looking up to the balcony, he grips his round arcane focus tight in his hands, making a claw. "Combustio Infernalis!" he calls out in his deep, booming voice, and the focus suddenly glows hot, rapidly changing from orange to red to blue to white. From the center, a bolt of fire flies to the stone figures assailing his allies, causing a backblast of air that sends his long, black locks dancing.
