Aanbo trains with Tuan Vo. Tuan Vo is an elderly human man who occasionally emerges from the monastery to perform feats of astonishing acrobatic prowess at various venues in Hochoch. He's never had someone from another order interested in learning from him before, but he's very pleased at this new prospect. He takes Aanbo to the monastery building - a squat stone building on the west side of the town inside the wall. Tuan Vo introduces the dwarf to the three other monks who are "working their physical disciplines." Then he commences into a punishing training regimen with Aanbo, interspersed with long, rambling philosophical discussions.
Tuan Vo has his head shaved, but when Aanbo asks him what spiritual discipline led him to this practice, Tuan laughs, revealing that he has a large diastema gap between his two front teeth. "It's not spiritual, exactly. It's vanity." The monk explains that, in his youth, he was greatly admired for his luxurious hair. "Great hair is no laughing matter. It got me into a lot of trouble," Tuan Vo avers. "Men wanted to be me, and women wanted to be with me. That made some people jealous, so I had to learn how to fight. But you have no idea how tiresome it is to have people chasing you everywhere you go, looking to love you or fight you. It's much easier to shave!"
As the training continues, the master monk talks to his dwarf pupil about ki, the life force. This isn't a new concept to Aanbo, of course. But Tuan Vo demonstrates how an awareness of one's own body and a focus on diet, breathing, and vigorous exercise reveals how ki flows through the body. "Just like water in a spring, ki flows in our bodies. And the things we eat and the things we do can encourage the flow of ki like a pump that pulls water from deep below the earth...or can block it, like a dam, or can even despoil it, like an animal that dies in a spring and brings disease."
Aanbo develops an awareness of the ki within his body, represented by the 2 ki points he now has, and his ability to move faster without armor or shield.
