Joseph and Kragga can immediately see that the medallions are small, bronze versions of the phoenix symbol they alone saw carved into the doorjamb downstairs. Contextually, the snake and sun inclines Joseph to think that this may be the symbol of a forgotten Pae sect, probably something to do with the inscription over the front door: "ALL WARE DANGER BE! THIS PORTAL ENTRANCE FORBIDDEN IS! ALL THE NEW MORNING HAIL!"

But what does a phoenix represent? What could the 'New Morning' be?

Albertus checks the bodies. A cursory search for items, and means of identification.
Wonderful work, my friends. I feel we work well with our mission together!
Our knightly fellow finishes cursory search of bodies, then rejoins with his companions to continue venturing forth!

"A new morning for a church of the sun. A revival, perhaps, was in the works, " Kragga reflects, after Joseph confirms that the medalions match the other symbols and are connected.

He steps into the room with Ogbar and notes the palettes. "Shall we move to the next room, then?"

Kragga suggests the door to the northwest of Al's position.

"Sounds like a plan." Joseph moves to the door Kragga indicated and begins to check it for traps.

The group examines the medallions and talks about what the "New Morning" could mean to Pae-worshippers while Joseph examines the other door opening off of the mezzanine (as opposed to the western corridor). Like the other door, this one is made of thick wood reinforced with somewhat corroded metal bands. He detects no traps, but unlike the other door, this one is locked.

"I wonder what happened to these people?" Aanbo asks aloud. "Were they compelled to maintain this temple even after death? And how did they die? If not by their own hand, who was responsible?" He shakes the thoughts from his head, unable to find any answers in this area.

Not wanting to leave them as they are, Aanbo begins to move one of the bodies back to the bedroom they came from. He picks one of the pallets to lay the body upon, positioning the arms at rest, and repeats for the other fallen figures.
Jan 3, 2024 5:24 pm
Theran sees what Aanbo is doing, and lends a hand. "I don't know what happened here, but the dead should at least be allowed to be at peace."

Albertus moves to the other door opening off the mezzanine, and steps aside. Allowing room for the lock to be picked. Otherwise our knightly fellow can try forcing it open!

Can the door be picked open? Or should I try forcing it open?
Jan 3, 2024 11:48 pm
Kragga has no skill with unlocking locks against their will, but certainly can lend a shoulder to breaking a door down.
OOC:
If we break the door down, Kragga can provide help action. Athletics +3. But if somebody can pick locks, that would be more desirable.

Our knightly fellow’s player gives twenty four hours. Before valiant decision is made, to force in yon door!
Kragga, my friend…please, give me a hand, whilst I press on this door!
Al puts knightly shoulder into it, with half-orcish assistance, forcing the door!

Ogbar joins the others at the door, watching to see if they can force it down or if he will need to join in and smash it himself.

"Is it done? What's taking so long?" Xana cranes her neck around the bodies as she attempts to watch the brutes rip down a measly door.
Jan 5, 2024 2:56 am
"It's all in the hips," Kragga explains as he assists Al in cracking the door open.
Jan 5, 2024 7:55 am
Aanbo and Theran begin to move the bodies back into the room they came from - which the two begin to think of as "the dormitory." Xana steps around this cleanup job to oversee the work at the door, asking what's taking so long. Joseph sees that there are no traps on the door and notices the lock - a very complicated looking contraption, doubtless with many interesting mechanisms...but before he can really examine (or pick) the lock, Albertus, Kragga, and Ogbar shove past him and smash the door in with a trio of kicks that make a tremendous noise. The door falls in pieces, and the light from Albertus' torch reveals a steep, narrow stairway leading up with a huge black stain of blood (much like Ogbar saw in the dormitory room) covering the stairs from the fourth step to the tenth.

Theran and Aanbo have managed to drag two bodies into the dormitory room. As Aanbo is settling the one body on the wooden pallet, a glorious golden light silently beams down from the ceiling into the body. The eyes alight, and the corpse attacks him! Aanbo is struck for 3 damage and miraculously does not lose consciousness with a critical hit!

Aanbo and Theran can react, and if they alert the rest of the party as part of their actions, we'll roll initiative.

Questions: Did the one that reanimated have the pendant? (I know the pendant was taken off of one.) And did the beam of light seem to come from - or strike - anywhere in particular? (From a node or hole in the ceiling, or maybe a painted emblem or sigil... versus the light striking the eyes or the pendant for example?

Xana sighs. What would this group do without her? Die, most likely. "Don’t worry, we’ve got your back Aanbo! Come on, everyone. Step lightly- we have work to do!" She then steps forward until she can see what’s going on, preparing to launch another blast of energy at any of those creatures that dare to attack her party people.
