Aanbo would reference the small broken vials found on the bench, if the others made mention of them. It wasn't clear that anyone reported it before the monsters attacked, but if it was mentioned then Aanbo would try to carefully recover as much samples as he could.Feb 24, 2024 10:15 pm
The dark ritual indeed sends Kragga's hairs standing on end, but also a feeling of satisfaction fills his half-orc heart. This Kaufra was a weak-minded fool whose stupidity led to much death and chaos. It was good to put this sad story to an end, to bring oblivion to the danger here. Kyuss's involvement was not a pleasant thought, and to think that he interceded where this dark deity interfered personally makes him wonder at the consequences.
"A rest would be wise," Kragga responds to Albertus, casting Prestidigitation on Aanbo's staff, to clean it from any stains imparted while pumeling Kaufra's undead flesh. "Perhaps we should first return to the outside and the light of the sun. But, mind that trap going down the stairs!"

Aanbo examines the broken vials, but isn't sure that there's enough "unquaffed" liquid on any of the glass shards to provide more of a sample than he has already.
In addition to the various things that were on the table (human skulls, purple candles, silver bowl, stained black tablecloth), Ogbar notes that Kaufra was holding a mace that was glowing brightly when he was still "alive." Those things are available to retrieve, as well as any of the Pae medallions that were the only parts of the Heralds that didn't crumble to dust when the ritual was disrupted (there are eight here, in among the piles of dust scattered between the two third-floor rooms).
Whether or not you retrieve any of those items, it sounds like that party wants to follow the earlier plan. The group drags one of the benches over to the stairwell and pushes it down. This triggers the spikes after a few seconds, and the spikes on one side of the stairwell are blocked as they THUNK into the thick wood. Then, as the spikes are retracting, members of the party hustle down the stairs before the trap is set off again...which it is, as the weight of the bench remains on the stairs. Every five seconds or so...THUNK!
From the largely-unexplored second floor, the party heads down the curving staircase and out the front door, barely noticing the delicious smell of the prepared supper in the dining room this time.
The party can take a rest here, lulled into relaxation by the distant, slow rhythm of THUNK...THUNK...THUNK heard faintly from inside. Healing requires the use of spells, potions, or applying a use of a healer's kit (which at least one of the party members has) to spend your hit die (if you still have one). Let me know what you do.

Kragga tends to his wounds, and takes a swig from his waterskin. Then he limbers up by running through traditional orcish fighting patterns with the staff.
"Your quarterstaff is of excellent quality, Aanbo. Let me know if it is time to return it to you."

"Keep it, Kragga," says Aanbo in regards to the quarterstaff. He laughs, "A tool in the hands of a master is more efficient than in the hands of a short fool."
With help, Aanbo transfers Joseph to the second floor so the rogue can rest.

Aanbo has a herbalism kit. I know in the past I used to mistake herbalism kits for healers kits, which is probably what happened in the early game. Eventually I will want to acquire a healers kit.Last edited February 25, 2024 4:09 pm

Ogbar brings the glowing mace along with him. As they rest, he points it out to the others, "One of those corpses was using this and it was glowing. Definitely magic, maybe cursed," he says with a shrug setting it down on the ground if anyone wants to take a closer look at it.

Kragga is always interested in examining magical artifacts. He takes a moment to feel its aura, and will spend a longer time with it to full understand it's power.
OOC:
Can I say I spend the majority of the short rest examining the mace to learn its magical properties? I recall a rule where you can rest with a magical weapon to learn what it does.Feb 27, 2024 5:06 pm
Xana, Theran, Ogbar, Kragga, and Albertus make their way down the stairs and out the front door to rest in the courtyard again. Albertus uses 3 applications from his healer's kit, so that Ogbar, Kragga, and himself can spend their hit dice to regain some HP. Ogbar presents the mace and Kragga examines it. The weapon looks as if it had just been made; there's not a scratch or blemish on it. It gleams very softly with a golden shimmer when it is swung. The ebony of the handle fits very well in the hand, and the weight is very comfortable. There are strange carvings toward the flanged metal head; the only recognizable symbol is the sunburst of Pae. Albertus gets a slight feeling of Good from the weapon: a sympathy with Pelor.
Aanbo (conscious) and Joseph (unconscious) are on the second floor landing, resting.

Before tossing his healers kit back into his pack, Al also binds wounds of his fallen friend Joseph, helping the roguish fellow back to his spry feet!
That weapon is well, Kragga, Al says to his half-orcish friend. I get the feeling, it was made for good.

"We have the cause of this temple's downfall," says Aanbo, refreshing his own memory of the events that took place. "I think now we can inspect the rest of this temple, taking care to avoid any more traps, and see if anything can be salvaged or returned to the temple's representatives or survivors. Those medallions, for example, should be given back to Pae."
"I'm also interested in knowing what's beyond that first floor doorway, where we could all see the lure of a feast," he adds with a smirk, "again, being cautious about blinding ourselves to the bait."
Aanbo helps Joseph to stand once the rogue has recovered enough to walk, and stays by the little one for support.

Joseph slowly regains consciousness, then comes awake with a start. The kindly faces of his companions Aanbo and Albertus reassure him that he's not in immediate danger, and he grins ruefully at them. "Thank you! He gets to his feet and looks around in the darkness/in the light of Albertus' torch (if he lit another one?). "What happened? Last thing I remember we were being swamped by those undead guys..." With their help, he creaks down the stairs to join the others outside the front door.
(Assuming the others fill him in on what happened) The halfling rogue replies to the monk. "I agree that we should check up on the rest of this place, especially if we think the undead guys are gone. I don't like the idea of leaving things unfinished." He digs in his pouch and pulls out the medallion he pocketed earlier, holding it up for everyone to see. "I'm guessing that we have a bunch more of these now?" Catching a whiff of the delicious meal inside, Joseph takes a step back and digs in his pack for some rations. "Maybe I'll eat a bit, first, just to diminish the temptation..."

"Agreed. Let us finish what we started."
Kragga will pack up his gear and return to the doorway Aanbo spoke of, with the tempting feast. He is satisfied knowing the mace is magical; it was no great artifact, but Kragga had dedicated himself to the recovery of magic that was lost, and this certainly counted.

If anyone wants the holy mace, just say the word. Kragga is not proficient with maces so it's not much good to him, but he can carry it if nobody wants it.Feb 28, 2024 4:32 pm
Al packs away his trusty healers kit. Satisfied with having kept his bond yet another day. Never leave a friend behind.
Kragga…if you don’t mind, and if it pleases the group, I will carry the mace. It may do us well, in case we find other undead in need of smiting. Unless someone else wishes it.
I am in it, only but to win it.

The party proceeds back into the Ruin, skirting the dust-free circle that indicates the hidden pit. Presumably all of the Heralds that were dumped in there have also crumbled, likely leaving only a pile of dust with more medallions and the gold chandelier in it. They proceed past the glowing doorway with the engraving of the phoenix-in-snake Pae symbol in it, and arrive at the archway leading north directly below the 2nd floor landing. To the east, under the arch of the stairs, is a door with some kind of mechanical apparatus over it. Joseph says "Hmmm..." with a bit of interest.Question: what is the order of the characters here? Who is going first, second, and third? Each position can take two characters (or three, as long as you're not in combat). I want to know who has the best view through the arch.

"Well Al, if it's such a good mace any time it gets a little too heavy for ya, feel free to pass it along!" Xana happily follows behind the rest of the group.
