Scene 1 - And the gunslingers followed...

SenorDeebs says:
'Old habits, lady. They'll be the death of me yet...' Henry settles for holding the door for his companion, bowing formally to the gunslingers they were leaving in the rustic old house.
Rose laughs a bit at Henry's display, glad to add some levity to the grim situation. "Thankee-sai, but no need to worry. You can feel free to walk me out any time." She bids Spline, Beretta, and Podge farewell with another curtsy.

When Rose sees the strange light coming out of the cellar, she defers to Henry's gunslinger wisdom and lets him lead the way. She stares at the light, stubbornly refusing to believe her eyes. Am I imagining it, she thinks, or is that electric light?

Mattie's hand is cold against the door, as she would expect from a plate of metal like this. The metal is smooth, impeccably clean.

As Mattie puts her ear to the door she can hear a faint humming sound - the kind that might be made by a refrigerator. There is also a faint sound of irregular tapping - like something light but hard clicking on metal. These sounds can only be heard with her ear against the door.

Mattie tries the handle, but the door is locked.

However, as she tries the handle, the sounds behind the door change. There is a loud sound of dull, deep barking - it sounds like a challenge of some kind? Sounds of objects being knocked around.

And then, the sound of something pounding against the door from the other side - pounding hard enough to be making dents in the door, a deafening sound in the white room Oscar and Mattie are standing in, the sound bouncing off the tiles that line it, echoing around and amplifying.

OOC:
I don't see anything about holding actions in the rules, @microtheMacroBear - but I think it is consistent with RAW to give you advantage on an initiative roll that might emerge from a situation, if you have your weapon cocked, loaded, and ready to use as you describe here.

OOC:
what kind of dents? How high are they - like from a big dog or something much larger? do we see a lock of some kind? thx

I'm going on the assumption that Henry can hear all this from where he moved to the top of the stairs. If not disregard!
'They're boxed in- not good when whatever the hells breaks loose' Henry thinks to himself, alarmed. He draws his gun and shouts down the stairs 'Whatever that is- lets face it in the open! I'll cover ya, but head up to the open, for your fathers sake!'

Henry calls out to Rose 'ROSE! Bring your scatter rifle here and fill anything coming up that is NOT our friends full of shot!'

The dents in the door are the size you would expect from a fist that is considerably larger than a typical human's. They are appearing peppered around the height of Mattie's head.

There isn't a keyhole. To the right of the door, on the wall at about shoulder-height is a hand-shaped depression.

It seems unlikely that whatever is behind the door will be able to actually make a hole in the door - however, it is starting to shudder in its frame. If it comes down, it will probably be because the hinges or the lock is broken.

Henry and Rose hear hurried sounds from behind the door from which they just exited the house.

Lol- I’m hoping helping friendly noises!

Hah!

The sounds are growling and barking, a clattering of heavy objects to the floor, and muffled shouts... sounds nice and friendly to me......!

"Quit that darn hollerin' already" Mattie belts out in equal volume. They will alert everybody on the farm of their actions! She steps away for the door for now and makes her way back to the cellar doors. She ascends and sees the pair ready for anything. Good people indeed.

She glances at the house to see if all the ruckus makes anybody come out, then says in a subdued voice: "Hold your horses. Whatever ungodly beast is down there, is kept locked up for now. Mayhap it needs killin' later, but now, there's nothin' much to do. One thing that's sure is that these here ex-gunslinger-turned-farmers have things hidden - unfriendly things. Oscar and I got the dark fella's package. It's dangerous magic as well. Haven't opend it yet. We might want some privacy to do so." Mattie has half a mind to use the barn to open it. Before saying so, she holds and looks Rose and Henry up and down.

"You don't seem all too magicky yourselves. Spell don't work?" The woman raises an eyebrow in question, relieved her friends seem to have stayed away from stranger's sorcery.

Oscar keeps his gun trained on the door and reaches out with his mind to the thing behind it.

As he concentrates he thinks, "The door is molten hot, it will burn you"
He sends an image of a red hot door to the mind behind it.
As he does this, he follows Mattie out. When he is out of the cellar, he softly closes it's door. "Whatever that thing is, it's big. I tried to make it think the door is dangerous.
Hopefully it takes."
OOC:
I am going to use Antipathy against the thing behind the door. Hopefully it makes it scared of the door. Let me know if I use the power correctly and if I can move afterwards.

Rolls

Antipathy - shimmer power first use make the thing afraid of the door - d6 doom - (1d6)

(3) = 3

OOC:
That looks all good to me, @microtheMacroBear

You rolled your doom dice d6, and you didn't score 1 or 2, so your doom die doesn't get downgraded to d4, it stays a d6.

The affect will stay with the mind for 3 hours (as you rolled a 3 on your doom die.
Oscar taps into the gaps between reality, into The Shimmer, and around him anyone watching him would see a distortion in the air around him, a sense of some other darkness intruding into this world, some disturbing noises somehow echoing faintly in the back of their minds...

As he tries to reach out and touch the mind of whatever is behind the door, the sounds of pummelling against the door cease - although sounds of deep harsh barking continue, which might be sounds of pain, or fury, or both...?

As Oscar backs out of the room, there are sounds of metal objects clattering behind the "Employees Only" door, sounds of things being pushed over, pulled around.

Closing the outer door, Oscar meets up with Rose, Mattie, and Henry. At the same time, the ka-tet is joined by an AR-15-toting Beretta, a huge-revolver-lugging Spline, and a furious looking Podge who has a wicked knife in one tentacle, a spiked bat in another.

"What in TARNATION is going on down there?!" demands Beretta, a look of bemused fear on her face.

"Well, what in Sam Hill's goin' on here?" Mattie takes a step between her people and the attackers.
She appears agitated. "I was tellin' ol' Oscar here that things like that," she draws the packet out of her pocket for a short moment, hating every second of touching it, before she puts it away again "cannot be opened in such an open place as a barn. 'tis dark magic, you know. So I went down the cellar to open it, naturally. Don't want nobody gettin' hurt on my account."

She pretends to be gathering her thoughts a bit. Mattie turns to look at the cellar doors, then continues: "when suddenly, somethin' tries to put its head through another door." She crosses her arms in front of her shoulder and scolds: "Might put up a warnin' for innocent folk looking for a safe space to open their infernal mail, don't you think? Keepin' such dangerous pets around and whatnot..."

Henry is perplexed but tries to keep a poker face. 'Apologies for yellin', Ma'am- I heard the noise from below and assumed some mischief was about and my ka-tet was in danger." Henry does not lower his gun from where it is trained- towards the bottom of the cellar, but raises an eyebrow. 'Have I overreacted? Is what is down there a danger to us all?' he asks mildly.

"Good work, kid. Let's hope it does," Rose says, hoping the ka-tet won't have to contend with something huge enough to dent steel—if that is indeed what happened.

When the ex-gunslingers appear out of nowhere, Rose jumps ten feet in the air and fumbles for her shotgun. A second later, she realizes who she's seeing and lowers the weapon. As Mattie and Henry say their piece, she backs away from the cellar door, still keeping her eye on it and her shotgun at hand—just in case.

"Is 'what is down there' dangerous?'?!? Henry, until now there WEREN'T any 'what is down there' that could have been dangerous!?!"

"There's just that metal table with the basin and the faucet - them there crates with our store of root vegetables - and that door that doesn't open."

"No pets, dangerous or otherwise!"
Jan 4, 2024 7:12 am
"Whatever's down there dented your door from the other side pretty well. Room came with the farm I reckon?"
Mattie hasn't touched her weapon and once again waits for them to lower theirs.
For ex-gunslingers they sure are quick to draw before even establishing what's what.

"Sweet Man Jesus!" barks Spline - who then makes an effort to calm himself to reply to Mattie.

"Yes, Mattie, that's right - when we were led here to this farm, the room was already there. Pretty freaky place, I know that. 'Specially when we first got here. That strange lektrik light, something I never saw before in this world. How damn clean it stays. Not to speak of the cracked-open mummified body we found there lying on the table."

"But that tap, that gives drinking-pure water, as many times as you press the button next to it. We have our good crops, and our health, to thank for that."

"So we cleared out the body, gave it a decent burial, and when nothing else seemed to change in that room - after we'd tried several times to open that door at the back and failed - we started just using it to store our potatoes and such like, and as our source of water."

"Never had anything problematic or anxiety-inducing make its way out of there the whole time we've been here."

"But that's before that man Black Francis, and you, turned up. I can imagine that might set some wheels in motion, so to speak. And that some of them there wheels might be, hm, inconvenient for you and for us..."

Currently there are no loud noises coming from behind the closed outer cellar door.
Jan 4, 2024 9:25 am
Henry lowers his gun and looks towards Oscar 'Well done, Oscar.' He lowers his gun and looks towards the trio of ex-gunslingers. 'The demon that is down there may be drawn to the package... or to us. Water or none- it may be unsafe for you here until we leave...'
