"Does Martin work for your Mama or Daddy?" Tom asks.
Jan 20, 2024 4:01 am
Selena nods in agreement. "I was planning to fight if he brought violence to the child and I was serious in taking him to my Pirate Captain and Guardian as he knows how to deal with scurvy dogs like him. I will fight to protect the weak and innocent from evil. " She tells Tom.

She then looks over at the child before looking to the group. " I can ask my Captain if we can smuggle the child aboard our ship and take her somewhere where she will be safe like a monastery or something where that Martin man will never find her after we eat of course. Captain Kidd is gruff but all he has ever shown me is kindness and respect besides being the most Savage scallywag among the 7 seas."

OOC:
A bit surprised at how quickly this has all escalated, so maybe we need to take a moment to consider what we know as facts, and what our options are? What does everyone else think?

For Gern, so far she knows that a child wandered accidentally onto a road and nearly got hit. She was helped by us, and then an adult arrived to thank us and take the child home/to safety. We all accused (and threatened with violence) the adult of being a threat, without any firm evidence, and they have left to...get evidence/help/city guards/something. We still have an uncommunicative child to care for. Not so sure about the other suggestions of embarking on ships, sword fights with Martin, etc. as they seem a bit of jump, and we are all kids after all so it is kinda out of character.

@MinMin: I like Tom's approach to working with Amber to figure out more of her story. I think that has been worthwhile, and may help us learn enough to get her home.

My preference would be to go somewhere we could learn more about the Jardeth family, quiz Anwyn and then go from there. But avoid attacking any adults, or getting in trouble with the city guard

What do the rest of you think and suggest?

OOC:
this is a text problem

Devoid of context, as text is, it is almost always taken in the worst possible context.

And I think its no really an escalation to assume we are the only people without a desire to exploit Anwyn. Its not reasonable to assume that she is a member of the Jarreth family. It is reasonable to assume that kidnapping is a means nobility use to gain leverage over other nobles.

In point of fact, their good word is meaningless. Same with their name. Martin lied, by omission, but still a lie. In the same breath he claimed to be a noble, that Anwyn was his charge, and then proceeded to make demands without any proof.

Would you put a man like that in charge of your 3yr old daughter? I wouldn't.

When Crow escalates something to violence, mechanically he gets a free intimidate check when he strikes someone. So he will throw something harmless or slap nonlethally. It will be rakish, and obvious. He is a rake afterall. Until then, pointing fingers and clever insults directed at middle aged men demanding toddlers be handed over is just the role to play.

As long as weapons arent drawn no laws are broken. But, it is against the law to brandish a weapon in Waterdeep. And doubly illegal to threaten with them drawn. I stand with everyones reaction, the dude made each of us think he was a creep, lets trust the groups instincts.

Anwyn
The girl shakes her head "no" in response to Tom's question.

"I knew it. Geezer made my skin crawl. We should go."
Jan 22, 2024 4:17 am
Selena nods before following Crow, Tom and the rest of their merry crew to their next destination either to look for the child's home or find a shelter. Selena knows Captain Kidds Galleon The Briny Brigand is her safe haven but she has been the only child that has safely been accepted onto a Pirate ship. So she'll follows the others judgement on what to do but will be ready to fight if it comes down to it
OOC:
Just curious but what is the current time of day right now? Just trying to get the vibe on if it is Noon or if it's the afternoon when we all confronted that Martin fella.

"Thank you, Anwyn!" Tom says, giving the girl a big smile. "I don't suppose he's a relative...err family, is family?"

"Where are we headed, exactly?" He asks Crow. "If Selena can stow her away in port for a while that would be good, but I wouldn't want to take her from the city. Could we maybe hide her in your shop Gern? Or...there are a lot of us, maybe we could each watch her for a while?"

OOC:
It is midmorning.
Anwyn once more shakes her head.

"I don't mind us each taking turns watching her but I rather we don't split up just in case that man returns to start trouble. I think someone should be the lookout so they can give the heads up if he should happen to come back. What do you all think?" Selena asks a moment later.

The quiet Fen falls to the back of the pack with Oshgal. Wordlessly, she mounts up with the grace she inherited from her mother’s heritage. Perched safely upon the large cat’s back, the half-orc keeps a roving eye on the surroundings of the group as discussion carries further about how to handle this situation.

The group is enjoying their meal when a crossbow bolt embeds itself out of nowhere in the tabletop. There is a note attached.
OOC:
Yes, I did check to see if Fen detected the individual before they fired since she specifically stated that she was paying attention, but his Stealth score beat her Perception.

Reflex caught the familiar click of a crossbow firing, and the hiss of its bolt. Crow stood from the bench in a fluid movement. He left the note for other concerned parties. "Time to go!" He quipped hoisting Anwyn to his shoulder and looking for the most covered route lateral to the trajectory of the crossbow bolt back to the city gates. "Don't think, just follow me. Someone, the note!" He was already sprinting full bore with Anwyn, casting his cape around the girl - revealing a rapier at his hip. He stopped as he came to the first hard corner of a food truck planning his traversal to include a place to hide - assuming that the attack had come in a line rather tha being surrounded.

Gern lets out a shout of surprise and glances around quickly. She reaches out and reads the note aloud to the group.
Jan 23, 2024 5:59 pm
Tom rises more slowly, dismissing Crow's hurrying--clearly if their group were the target and not the table, one of them would have been hit and there would have been no note. He quickly scans the crowd, looking in particular for signs of House Jardeth, but hurries off after the group with a frown as Gern snatches the note, as he's curious to its contents.
Jan 23, 2024 8:41 pm
The note reads, "If you know what is good for you, you will deliver the child at moonrise in the City of the Dead. Come alone!"
Jan 23, 2024 8:46 pm
Gern shares the contents of the note with the group.

"Any of you know anything about the City of the Dead? she asks the group.
Jan 24, 2024 3:03 am
Selena shakes her head no. "Tis be a bad omen this. Smells of a necromancy cult. I say we just take her home to her parents. Whatever this House of the dead is spells bad news." She says as she runs after everyone keeping her eyes peeled for the assassin.
Jan 24, 2024 3:12 am
"I know there's not a chance in the nine hells I am bringing Anwyn there." Crow called over in response. "That note is evidence, conspiracy to commit a crime. We bring it and Anwyn to the Halls of Justice. I would bet any Cleric or Paladin of the Maimed God would jump at the chance to help. Or we go to the Watch. Or Captain Kidd. But we are just children, any merc who would stoop to kidnapping wouldn't waste a seconds thought for murdering any of us."
OOC:
Crow has the trait Bloody-Minded, he might not be factually correct in assuming this, he is certainly taking the threat deadly serious as is his nature.

Also he is practically an adult and acting as everyone's bjg brother whether it is deserved or not.

His motives are personal, being that he is an orphan by abandonment and sees some similarities to Anwyn's situation.

Reminding everyone that Crow is not a good guy he is Chaotic Neutral and acting against his judgement even sticking around as his first impulse would be to run and hide.

Far out of her depths when considering the power structures of the city, Fen remains silent and wary-eyed atop Oshgal's back. Her face reads of nervous anxiety laced with sadness. The child being left on her own and in a situation of potential peril rings too close to home for the half-orc and she retreats into her hood and mask to conceal her feelings from the group.

"I don't want to die," she mumbles meekly when Crow finishes his claim. "Anwyn needs to be safe." The statements are not said in contradiction to one another, merely placed out as two facts. "Who can we trust?"
