As you are deciding what to do today, you hear a scream from a nearby roadway. A toddler has trundled out into the street and directly in the path of an onrushing wagon! You have only seconds to act!
He left his soup behind, it was cold by now anyhow. Grabbing his ledger, he burst towards the sound of the scream - superhuman grace and reflexes as well as his wiry frame allowed him to slip through towards the scream. Bursting into a full sprint from the first step.
Crow, a precocious youth already strong and built like a man had the voice to go with it, his bass voice thrown like a roar at he carriage. "Whoa, hold your horses idiot!" He trusted that driver as far as he could throw them and darted in front of the cart, tumbling as he grabbed the infant, shielding the child with his body as he tried to clear the carriage with the acrobatic feat.

Gern has seen many accidents, none a pleasant sight, and rushes to the edge of the roadway hoping this ends well.
The boy weaves through the crowd using his small stature to his advantage, though it musses his mousy brown hair and more than once he has to secure his spectacles to his nose with one hand to keep from losing them.
He stops at the edge of the road, eyes quickly scanning the scene and trying to take in everything they can--how the child may have come loose from their watcher, how carefully the driver has steered his wagon, and how selflessly Crow has acted to save the child.
Comprehending the nature of disturbance and the individuals who seem to be reacting in aid of the small biped, the river-rapid ripples of cloak settle into a slow, breathy calm. She and her shadow, still some paces behind her in the alley, hold a simultaneous breath as they attempt to keep watch without being noticed.

"Look, all these people are bearing witness. Helm Ever Watchful knows you. Don't make the mistake of trying to get away with this, Waterdeep is a city of law and order. What is your name?" Having placed the toddler on his shoulders, Crow opened the ledger and wet his pen in ink, already scribbling the time of day, the date, and offense. Crow regarded the carriage driver with a serious unblinking glare. The Chondathan youth was still quite angry. But remained diplomatic has he had no actual authority to punish.

He didn't Hunkering down he got onto the childs level and ruffled her hair playfully. "Where are your parents I wonder?" He searched through his pockets and produced a Morning Glory flower he had picked earlier and showed it to the girl. "I am cawed Rafn." He made a play on words in the common tongue, but interjected his name in his native tongue. Chuckling at his own joke he asked. "Whats your name?" Crow offered the flower to the girl a twinkle of mischief in his green and golden eyes as he mentally rehearsed the "magic trick" for her entertainment and astonishment. Something was curious about the child who weathered both narrowly escaping certain death and the attention of dozens of strangers with uncharacteristic grace. It reminded him of himself, fearless and bold, without a care for consequence.
"Well thank the gods you were quick on your feet. You saved the child's life. Strange this is, no one is coming forward to claim them. Thinking we should visit around here to see if we can find the minders, don't you?" Gern speaked to Crow.

"That was quite well done," Tom remarks upon seeing how smoothly Crow handles the driver and achieves what does appear to be a just outcome. It is clear from his tone of voice that he is visibly impressed.
As Crow works to gain the child's trust, Tom inspects her more closely. Are her clothes as tattered as one would expect of an orphan, merely plain as those of a tradesman who might wander these streets, or higher quality that would be inspected? Is there anything else about her dress or behavior that stands out?

"Dropping" it "on accident" he began to look around for it. The flower had simply vanished. Then he crinkled his nose. Took a deep breath. And "sneezed" the flower back out. "Gods bless me." He gasped as he ended the trick tucking the flower, which was perfectly clean into Anwyn's ear.

As he considers this for a moment, his mouth creases momentarily into a frown before he shakes it off and suddenly brightens.
"But I suspect this is a good mystery for us to solve on our own!"
He turns to Selena as she steps forward and addresses the Anwyn, looking her up and down.
"Oh, I'm sorry, are you a friend of the girl?"
"Well met, I know both of you don't I?" Turning to Tom she adds, "I don't think Lady Selena knows the human child. It doesn't seem like anyone around here does. I think your idea of asking your father, or looking ourselves, is a good one. I bet it won't be any trouble at all finding the child's minders."
She picks up a small pebble and aims it for the feet of the boy who had so boldly stood up to an adult without hesitation.
"Psst!" She calls aloud, waving a hand in a gesture to encourage any of the gathering who might notice to come her direction. Stepping only slightly out of the shadows of the alley, she is small and lean in stature but her face is still mostly obscured by her raised hood.
When the pebble struck his boot he looked to the alley. He knew better than to walk into an alley with a shadowy figure skulking. Instead he looked at Tom and jerked his head in the direction of the hidden summoner. Taking a few steps, to the alley, measured ones a fencer's play. "Why are you hiding in the dark?" Taking a step to the left he instinctively closed a flank leaving Tom for a more direct approach.
"Because is safer for me here," she responds solemnly. Her words are muffled through the bandana still worn over the lower half of her face. The light, now finding reflection on the small, exposed patch skin of her brow, reveals the indistinguishable and undeniable sage green tint of her flesh.
"Safer for both us," she adds with a mild nod over her shoulder to a still yet unseen companion of hers.
From the alley behind, a pair of eyes become visible, glowing a vibrant peacock green. As the eyes edge closer to the light of the open street, the face from whence the orbs peer becomes visible; a young, yet still sizeable jungle cat inches closer. Though its body is low to the ground in a crouch and the ears are pinned to the sides of its head, the expression in its eyes read of fear as opposed to aggression. The cat, murmuring quietly through saber fangs that seem too large for its body, comes to rest at the feet of Fen and nuzzles its head against her calf.
"People not like us," the girl says simply before crouching down to run her fingers through the animal's dark and mottled neck fur, a perfect color and pattern for hiding in the shadows.

"Wow, what breed of cat is that?" he asks, as the kitty steps forward--he's genuinely intrigued by both the feline and Fen herself as they're foreign to even somewhere as cosmopolitan as Waterdeep.
As he observes that, though their group is increasing in size, they have ceased to be a major center of attention and people about them have returned to the usual bustle of the city, he nods toward Selena and Fen and says, "I would like to get somewhere a little less crowded. I have a simple idea I would like to try though it will likely not uncover much. I believe we had been discussing heading to a lunch over which we might make a plan to get Anwyn safely home. Would you care to join us?"
She seems to settle on an idea and returns her gaze to Crow with a clear, "Fen?"
The word is plainly stated, though her inflection reads more of a question than a certainty. It is a word she knows that had frequently been used in her direction, though perhaps it was never officially deemed her unique identifier in the world.
As Tom's enthusiasm towards her family becomes apparent, Fen stoops to scratch behind the feline's ears. Once more, the visible portion of her face becomes quizzical and thoughtful. She scrunches her brows, sighs, and looks apologetic, unable to find a suitable answer to his inquiry. Her shoulders raise in an exaggeratedly slow shrug and she gestures with her free hand to him, indicating an invitation for him to feel the fur.
"Oshgal" she chirps warmly and the cat's eyes close in peace as a thrumming purr drifts from its chest.
"Lunch sounds good," she returns, glancing to the small child to read if her presence is as unnerving to the youngest of this mix as it has been to adults in the past. "Keep Anwyn safe." There is a flicker in Fen's eyes; she has empathy for one so small, alone, and lost in a world too chaotic to yet be understood entirely.
"Want to pet kitty?" she asks the little toddler, kneeling beside the animal as it rolls to its side with all the docile sweetness of an average house cat. "Kitty nice," she reassures.
"Oh you're a half-orc. That explains the paranoia. But I wouldn't worry, other than the antiquated opinion of Old Money Bluebloods, you're hardly out of place here. Waterdeep sees its share of wonderful and strange things and if you are the most exotic creature we see today it shall be quite a slow day."
"Anyway I bet all of us could split a whole roast goat!"
"Roast goat sounds delicious," she agrees. "Where to?"
As she stands, Oshgal's purring intensifies and the giant cat's even larger paws bat the air playfully while its tail dusts the ground in undeniable enjoyment as affections are rained down from multiple sources.
"There's a green not too far away from here where different vendors sell food from carts along the road--that might make sense? People can pick what they like and there will be enough space for us and room for pets?"
"Never had to look after a human child before. Any of you know what they eat?" She asks the group as they near the food stalls.
Stopping midstride Crow looked at Anwyn woth dorect eye contact. "My favorite food is a bear steak and a baked potato with lots of butter and cream. Whats your favorite food, Anwyn?" He suspected with her golden hair and nright eyes Anwyn was a chondathan like he was, and like most chondathan he had a "salt-tooth." He was curious what Anwyn's preference was, and tried to emphasize that with his expression.
If Crow can get the girl talking a bit about her favorite foods, or any topic really, it should provide them with some clues as to what type of family she comes from. And at this point, any clue will help.
He runs over the typical menus of the food carts in his mind as they near the green, trying to decide which might be the best bet for buying her something she likes.
"So, do we poke around first ourselves to look for the minders, or shall we try the guard house and hand her over?"
"But failing us learning more from her, since she may not be the best source of information, we could change our strategy and try to learn more about her. While the priests watch over her, we could split up across the city and post or hand out flyers to see if anyone recognizes her description. Someone should be looking for her if she's missing."
Hoping perhaps the little one can lead them in some direction that will aid the band of little detectives, Fen encourages the child to share her knowledge with the party in an indirect manner.
Crow remarked appreciatively as he began to negotiate for a kettle of mashed potatoes and gravy.

"Hullo sir, who might you be?"
Rather than lowering her head as she is wont to do, Fen maintains straight posture, deferring to Crow and Gern for the conversational part of this interaction but maintaining a presence as fellow protector of the small human girl. In her silence, Fen observes the man sharply, looking not only for any familial similarity between himself and their charge, but for any feature that would further raise the red flags that have already begun to flutter in her mind.

Crow wasn't going to deny the instincts of the group. He was already suspicious when Anwyn hid her face, she had stared down a horse drawn carriage unblinking. "She's scared of you, but I'm not." He stood on the balls of his feet poised but relaxed wagging his left index finger. "Try again, Geezer!"
There seems to be little to do now but watch how it plays out, and carefully observe whether Martin reacts like someone who is a trustworthy guardian for the girl or like someone who is guilty and deserving of their scorn.

Crow placed Anwyn gently on the ground behind him and pushed her over to Tom, who was on his right, gesturing he should shield her as he drew out, on line, Martin pointing him out as he returned Martin's scowl with a steely glare. "So, Geezer, you got proof you're a blueblood?"

"I wonder where the mother is?" she whispers to Tom as she tucks Anywn behind the pair of them.
He nods towards Martin. "His house is known for hiring out their retainers as muscle--he could as easily be a soldier sent to fetch her as a baby-sitter."
"Show us proof, mister or we will call the guards over and tell them that you are up to no good or would you rather I take you to Captain Kidd and see what he has to say about any of this? "Selena replies with a sly smile. She grasps onto the hilt of her sword preparing to draw it in case things go bad.

"Show me somewhere happy?" She asks the child, aiming to distract the girl from the tense situation they all just encountered. "Want to ride kitty?"
Waving Selena to close the circle he nodded to her sword. "You're real brave, but threatening is a two edged sword. If we don't follow through on threats of violence it makes us look weak. Can't afford to be seen as weak with this one as our charge." Patting Anwyn's head for empasis he smiled at the kid and affectionately pinched her cheek. "Midweek Mass is our best chance of getting Anwyn to her rightful guardians. But that is a few days away and judging by how pushy Martin was, I will say we might need a good sword arm."
He brought it full circle. "Noone needs to take the risk other than me, but I sure could use the help. Anyone got ideas how to shelter the Tyke until then?"
As the group discusses next steps, Tom digs through his bag and pulls out a pen and paper. Using one of the tables set out for diners, he motions at Anwyn and has her watch as he does a brief sketch of his home. He motions to her with the pen. "Would you like to draw your house or anywhere you like to play?"

She then looks over at the child before looking to the group. " I can ask my Captain if we can smuggle the child aboard our ship and take her somewhere where she will be safe like a monastery or something where that Martin man will never find her after we eat of course. Captain Kidd is gruff but all he has ever shown me is kindness and respect besides being the most Savage scallywag among the 7 seas."
For Gern, so far she knows that a child wandered accidentally onto a road and nearly got hit. She was helped by us, and then an adult arrived to thank us and take the child home/to safety. We all accused (and threatened with violence) the adult of being a threat, without any firm evidence, and they have left to...get evidence/help/city guards/something. We still have an uncommunicative child to care for. Not so sure about the other suggestions of embarking on ships, sword fights with Martin, etc. as they seem a bit of jump, and we are all kids after all so it is kinda out of character.
@MinMin: I like Tom's approach to working with Amber to figure out more of her story. I think that has been worthwhile, and may help us learn enough to get her home.
My preference would be to go somewhere we could learn more about the Jardeth family, quiz Anwyn and then go from there. But avoid attacking any adults, or getting in trouble with the city guard
What do the rest of you think and suggest?
Devoid of context, as text is, it is almost always taken in the worst possible context.
And I think its no really an escalation to assume we are the only people without a desire to exploit Anwyn. Its not reasonable to assume that she is a member of the Jarreth family. It is reasonable to assume that kidnapping is a means nobility use to gain leverage over other nobles.
In point of fact, their good word is meaningless. Same with their name. Martin lied, by omission, but still a lie. In the same breath he claimed to be a noble, that Anwyn was his charge, and then proceeded to make demands without any proof.
Would you put a man like that in charge of your 3yr old daughter? I wouldn't.
When Crow escalates something to violence, mechanically he gets a free intimidate check when he strikes someone. So he will throw something harmless or slap nonlethally. It will be rakish, and obvious. He is a rake afterall. Until then, pointing fingers and clever insults directed at middle aged men demanding toddlers be handed over is just the role to play.
As long as weapons arent drawn no laws are broken. But, it is against the law to brandish a weapon in Waterdeep. And doubly illegal to threaten with them drawn. I stand with everyones reaction, the dude made each of us think he was a creep, lets trust the groups instincts.
"Where are we headed, exactly?" He asks Crow. "If Selena can stow her away in port for a while that would be good, but I wouldn't want to take her from the city. Could we maybe hide her in your shop Gern? Or...there are a lot of us, maybe we could each watch her for a while?"

The exception is class skills. Class skill grant a +3 bonus. Your class skills are listed below. So if you put a rank into Knowledge (local), you would have a +1 for the rank, +3 because it is a class skill, plus your Intelligence modifier (+0) for a total modifier of +4. For you, class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (local) (Int), Knowledge (nobility) (Int), Perception (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Sleight of Hand (Dex), and Swim (Str).
Some skills can be used without putting ranks into them (untrained). If the skill allows untrained use, you simply use the appropriate ability modifier. So if you didn't put any ranks into Stealth (which can be used untrained), you would have a +3 (your Dexterity modifier). If a skill can only be used if trained (such as Knowledge (local)), you must put ranks into it to use it.
A skill list can be found here, whether it is trained or untrained, the appropriate ability modifier, and whether there is an armor penalty (a penalty that is applied when wearing certain armors). Just ignore the class skill columns. How each skill is used is described here, just click on the skill name for a complete description.
Backgrounds, such as the Sailor background, are not used in Pathfinder 1st edition (that particular background is from 2nd edition Pathfinder). Instead, if you wanted to represent your past as a sailor, you would simply choose Profession (sailor) skill and put a rank into it (there is no Athletics skill or Underwater Marauder feat in 1e).

"I'm happy to take this letter to the Watch. Since I'm involved, my father would throw his influence behind protecting us," Tom says. "Same downside as before however, once involved they're likely to take over custody of Anwyn and decide who takes her in. Of course, this letter will throw Martin into doubt and probably make them more cautious of anyone attempting to claim her."
He ponders this for a moment.

Though her communication is truncated and does not come from an educated place, her intent is pretty easy to discern: if Tom has faith in the Watch, she is willing to try that route but she does not want to be seen as part of this ragtag group at this point in time. She is still very uneasy about her heritage and the sort of looks she is accustomed to receiving when her and Oshgal traverse alone.
1st week of March.
"We might want to have Anwyn elsewhere when I do so, so that they can't make me turn her over into the Watch's custody," he points out. "The question becomes, do we want to try and visit the Cemetery to see if we can find out more or leave it to the Watch?"
He wants to secure a witness before he tries going to the Watch for that reason.
"I don't know exactly what this is about, but I'm worried that some group in the city may be abducting children or at least trying to kidnap this specific girl."
He won't offer the names of the other children who were with him unless pressed, and he avoids any further discussions with the others so that he can honestly say he doesn't know Anywn's current whereabouts--he wants to get the Watch looking out for the suspicious forces at work and not the girl herself if possible.
"While a child getting lost is a mystery, it is the sort that's solved every day, and I trust someone will recognize her. But there is nothing ordinary about this threat and I think it bears looking into, so I brought it to you at once."

If not go ahead and roll the sneak attack damage and subtract 5 from intimidate.
You can use this skill to cause an opponent to become shaken for a number of rounds. This shaken condition doesn’t stack with other shaken conditions to make an affected creature frightened. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target’s Hit Dice + the target’s Wisdom modifier.
Success: If you are successful, the target is shaken for one round. This duration increases by 1 round for every 5 by which you beat the DC. You can only threaten an opponent this way if it is within 30 feet and can clearly see and hear you. Using demoralize on the same creature only extends the duration; it does not create a stronger fear condition.
Fail: The opponent is not shaken.
Action Demoralizing an opponent is a standard action.
Retry? You can attempt to intimidate an opponent again, but each additional check increases the DC by +5. This increase resets after one hour has passed.
A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. Shaken is a less severe state of fear than frightened or panicked.

The man seems disinclined to answer and merely smiles smugly. "You're a paladin. You won't hurt me."

The man spits blood. "Fine, I'll tell you. That woman is Aristina, and she is my boss. She's gone to report to her boss what we've learned, and when he hears about it, there's going to be trouble!"

The man laughs. "Her boss is the Xanathar and I don't know what he wants with the kid. I just obey orders."

"When they were speaking before, one of the men had suggested heading to Longsaddle; though the woman who escaped wouldn't let him without Anwyn. It's possible that's where they would flee to, though I think it's more likely she'll regroup and make another attempt."

The moment's leading up to the first time he had killed must have been a confusing fracas. It all made sense to Crow because he had instigated the attack. He had ambushed the enemy exactly as the paladin's had instructed him. Only to far greater effect than they had imagined. The fleshwound he inflicted on the first man was his first blow struck intending to kill. It had been a hard thing, he had to steel up every fiber of his courage to strike.
The second, as he tumbled between the kidnapper's guard was considerably easier. Crow didn't require thought as a killer instinct set his blood alight. He stepped and striking from sinistra cut through his enemies chest, stopping the heart in a single thrust. It had felt so easy, so supremely satisfying, such power in the act. But now, he couldn't shake the guilt, not in the act itself. But how good it felt, how natural, how right it had been in the moment. "Am I a good man, can a good man kill?"
There was a voice that spoke in answer from deep within. Crow did not like what it had to say. It was very excited Crow had chosen such a violent path. The dread that came from within him, he could feel it radiating chill from his core. Crow scowled as they continued plagued by his dark thoughts and the desire to be rid of them.
And there are a good many unknowns remaining here-- who are these Xanathar, what type of influence do they have within the city, why is the girl so important to them, and-- most importantly-- who can they ultimately trust to ensure her safety?
Though he's aware to dig deeper will be very dangerous, and he may not be considered up to the task, he sees no safety in ignoring these events, either. Certainly, Anwyn's parents were shown no mercy. Like it not, all of them are a part of this now and he will have to see this through to the end. There is no way to drop this pursuit and return to his 'normal life', nor telling if such a state will ever exist again.
