Anyone who wishes to do so (and is able) can make a Knowledge (local) check to see what you know about the City of the Dead.

what modifier and stat is for knowledge local? Just curious. Would like to make the ability check but there is no where on my character sheet where ability checks are listed .

OOC:
Ah, I see now. You didn't apply your skill ranks. You, as a swashbuckler get 4 plus your Intelligence modifier (+0) skill ranks to spend at 1st level. Because you are human, you get an extra skill rank each level (for a total of 5). The way skills work is that you can put ranks into the skills of your choice. You cannot have a skill rank higher than your total level. At each level, you get 5 more skill ranks to distribute as desired. Because you cannot apply more ranks to a skill than your total level, at 1st level, you should have five different skills. Each rank adds +1 to your skill, plus the modifier for the governing ability score. So, if you were to put a rank into Stealth, for example, you would get a +1 for the skill rank plus your Dexterity modifier (+3) for a total of +4.

The exception is class skills. Class skill grant a +3 bonus. Your class skills are listed below. So if you put a rank into Knowledge (local), you would have a +1 for the rank, +3 because it is a class skill, plus your Intelligence modifier (+0) for a total modifier of +4. For you, class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (local) (Int), Knowledge (nobility) (Int), Perception (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Sleight of Hand (Dex), and Swim (Str).

Some skills can be used without putting ranks into them (untrained). If the skill allows untrained use, you simply use the appropriate ability modifier. So if you didn't put any ranks into Stealth (which can be used untrained), you would have a +3 (your Dexterity modifier). If a skill can only be used if trained (such as Knowledge (local)), you must put ranks into it to use it.

A skill list can be found here, whether it is trained or untrained, the appropriate ability modifier, and whether there is an armor penalty (a penalty that is applied when wearing certain armors). Just ignore the class skill columns. How each skill is used is described here, just click on the skill name for a complete description.

Backgrounds, such as the Sailor background, are not used in Pathfinder 1st edition (that particular background is from 2nd edition Pathfinder). Instead, if you wanted to represent your past as a sailor, you would simply choose Profession (sailor) skill and put a rank into it (there is no Athletics skill or Underwater Marauder feat in 1e).

I apologize. I should have checked your sheet before we started and I neglected to do so. I hope that this clears things up a bit. If not, let me know and I'll break it down further.

Crow racks his brain.

The immediate threat was far too distracting.

Tom picks at his memory, trying to place what he knows of the City of the Dead.

"I'm happy to take this letter to the Watch. Since I'm involved, my father would throw his influence behind protecting us," Tom says. "Same downside as before however, once involved they're likely to take over custody of Anwyn and decide who takes her in. Of course, this letter will throw Martin into doubt and probably make them more cautious of anyone attempting to claim her."

He ponders this for a moment.

"If we're going to go that route, we should go back and check if the food vendor or another diner saw the bolt fired toward us. Otherwise they might dismiss the note as something we created ourselves."

Fen nods vigorously, pointing to Tom. "Yes, see if someone saw archer. Good idea." Then she thinks a moment before suggesting, "Maybe tell Watch about everything but …" she trails off a moment, considering whether or not she should voice her idea. "Anwyn hides while you talk?" She looks unsure, clearly out of her depth in this city world consisting of regulators and appointed peace keepers. "I hide too," she finishes.

Though her communication is truncated and does not come from an educated place, her intent is pretty easy to discern: if Tom has faith in the Watch, she is willing to try that route but she does not want to be seen as part of this ragtag group at this point in time. She is still very uneasy about her heritage and the sort of looks she is accustomed to receiving when her and Oshgal traverse alone.

OOC:
Ok cool. Sorry I was confused at what edition we were playing but didn't know I couldn't take the sailor background. I'll need to fix my character sheet later then as they made the character sheet without adding the skills to it. Just been busy getting ready to go offline for a family obligation here in a few weeks as I'll be offline and out of town for the
1st week of March.
Jan 27, 2024 6:36 am
OOC:
I will also be out of touch the first week in March, as I have a convention to help run (I'm in charge of the gaming hall and my wife is the con director) that weekend. Shane Hensley (Savage Worlds, Deadlands) is our Gaming Guest of Honor, and Jake Stormoen (The Outpost, Mythica) is our Media Guest of Honor!

Tom knows that the City of the Dead is the local name for the Waterdeep Cemetery, a section of the city that is walled off and reserved for burials, but he knows little else about it.
Jan 27, 2024 4:44 pm
"Ah right. The City of the Dead is local slang for the Cemetery District. It's walled off, with visitors only attending services, but I'm not sure how actively it's guarded." Tom tells the others. "I'm going to try and find a witness who will vouch for that message being fired at us. If I can, then I'll take this letter to my father and the Watch and ask them to look into the matter."

"We might want to have Anwyn elsewhere when I do so, so that they can't make me turn her over into the Watch's custody," he points out. "The question becomes, do we want to try and visit the Cemetery to see if we can find out more or leave it to the Watch?"
OOC:
If there are no objections, Tom will head back to the square where they ate and start questioning the vendors and any diners who he recognizes as having been sitting around them while they were eating whether they say the quarrel strike the table (he doesn't think they'll have seen the shooter, he just wants proof that someone shot the message at them as he's worried authorities may dismiss it as a game made up by the children.)

He wants to secure a witness before he tries going to the Watch for that reason.
Jan 27, 2024 4:58 pm
Tom has a little difficulty getting witnesses to agree to testify, but eventually, he finds two people who will back your story. No one seems to have seen the shooter, as expected.
Jan 29, 2024 12:41 am
Tom will track down his father at work, show him the letter, give him the names of the witnesses, and explain that he and some others had found Anwyn after the accident but while trying to ask her about her parents had had the quarrel fired at the table with the threatening letter attached after refusing Martin.

"I don't know exactly what this is about, but I'm worried that some group in the city may be abducting children or at least trying to kidnap this specific girl."

He won't offer the names of the other children who were with him unless pressed, and he avoids any further discussions with the others so that he can honestly say he doesn't know Anywn's current whereabouts--he wants to get the Watch looking out for the suspicious forces at work and not the girl herself if possible.

"While a child getting lost is a mystery, it is the sort that's solved every day, and I trust someone will recognize her. But there is nothing ordinary about this threat and I think it bears looking into, so I brought it to you at once."

We all cool with a fast forward?

Crow would probably take Anwyn to the halls of justice if everyone is alright with that.

Fine with me-- whatever works best for GM and the group.

Arriving at the Halls of Justice, you find an acolyte waiting at the doors to the temple. He wears the white robes of Tyr, with a black glove over his right hand, and the scales of justice adorning the front. "Greetings, friends. May the blessings of Tyr be upon you. How may I assist you today?"
Jan 30, 2024 11:07 pm
Crow makes the sign he was taught as he approached his fellow acolyte. "Greetings brother, we have come seeking sanctuary for this child. And I must deliver my ledger to my mistress." He patted Anwyn on the head to indicate who he meant. "She is imperiled and we have evidence. Pray would you let us through?" Crow made nice, for one because the other acolyte appeared to have seniority, and for two because it would not do to offend someone in his own house.

"Of course you may pass," the acolyte responds, indicating a set of double doors behind him. "Justice Darkhaven is in the sanctuary. I'm sure that he will be able to help."
