Chapter 4: The Waters of Menehune

Admiral hops off the boat after Cordey and Regan, landing on the riverbank next to Taresh. He follows the riverbank up to the lower waterfall (since it seems like that was where the Sahuagin who fled was heading), hoping to see some kind of gap or opening in the stone behind the rushing water that might serve as the entrance to the Hag’s lair.

Sorry, that fiendish vigor roll should be 1d4+4, so that's a 5

Water falls into the pool from above. Behind the bulk of the crashing water there is indeed a gap. The pool continues under the waterfall into a wide cave. The fall acts like a curtain to the large opening. Admiral peers through mist and water droplets and gets a look inside.

It seems the party's skiff isn't the only boat that had come down to the end of the brook. Judging by the look of the wrecked boats inside the cave, it's possible that these boats were originally piloted by unfortunate fishers, perhaps routed here by the Sahuagin to become meals for the hag.

There is a large dark archway at the back of the pool cave. There are signs of ancient stonework that are in some ways similar to some of the masonry at Martin's shipyard as well as to some of the structures the party saw under the river water. There are two dim red lights shining at the top of the arch. They cast a pale eerie red glow on the passage.

Admiral sees through the waterfall into the cave. What is everyone else doing? Investing any where else outside the cave? Or joining Admiral?

Note: I edited the previous post to include a description I forgot regarding the two red light in the archway.

Cordey is right up there with Admiral.
This looks like the place.

Regan will move to the waterfall, lifting his shield as an umbrella and stepping through into the cavern behind. He will head towards the archway, not moving fast enough to leave his companions behind but not exactly lollygagging around... although he keeps a wary eye open for dangers that lie hidden.

It takes a bit of wading through shallow portions of the pool, but Regan heads to the back of the pool cave toward the archway, moving past two small boats that have been wrecked due to some conflict and dragged to rocky and sandy areas of the cave.

Making it to the back of the cave, Regan stands in front of a short tunnel that leads to the arch. Beyond the arch appears to be the wall of more cave. The two red lights, seen before, not now appear to be red lanterns hanging from the top of the arch. They seem to respond to Regan's movement and they glow slightly brighter as he approaches.

"Assume the hag knows we're coming. Let's get there before she has too much time to prepare!" With that, Regan darts through the archway into caverns beyond.

"I think one should be careful." as Cordey draws froth his cutlass and is gripping the charm his lovely gave me. (Cordey has 60' darkvision so he doesn't own a light source.)

Admiral wrinkles his nose in displeasure as he wades through the shallow pool after Cordey and Regan. "Huh!?" he says, startled, still ankle-deep in water, as Regan suddenly takes off into the caverns. He hurries after him, pausing at the threshold to see if and how the lanterns react to Regan rushing through the archway.

https://i.imgur.com/UrgmVEr.png Admiral watches the lanterns radiate more brightly as Regan passes under them and then revert back to their faint eerie red glow once the knight passes into the cave beyond. Cordey and Admiral stand before the arch. When Cordey draws his cutlass, the lanterns respond with modulating hues timed with his motion.

The lighting is dim in the tunnel beyond the arch, but Regan can see due to a faint mystical glow emitted by the stone walls themselves. He sees that the tunnel bends both to the left and to the right.

Cordey moves up with Regan and is worry of the lanterns.

Regan heads back to the archway to ask the Captain, "Hey... left or right?"

"Left!" Admiral declares on a whim, following Regan and Cordey into the tunnels beyond the archway.

While the talk of which direction to go occurs, Tasya and Jin step through the arch into the passage, joining Admiral, Regan, and Cordey.

Just as a consensus between Regan and Admiral about proceeding left is achieved, a fresh aroma wafts from the right passage. It's a tantalizing fragrance of ripe berries that is accompanied by the crisp, clean scent of fresh moving water.

Then a breeze blows into the area through the arch causing the air direction to change. The fresh smell coming form the right dissipates and another less appealing smell can be picked up from the left direction. It's a combination of rotting fish, briny water, and the unmistakable stench of decomposing organic matter.

"Almost seems like someone doesn’t want us going this way…" Admiral remarks, continuing down the left passage despite the awful smell.
Apr 11, 2024 12:54 am
"I was thinking the same. I know I'm a bit of a cynic, but at least I'm not alone," Regan says with a chuckle, tossing his warhammer over his shoulder as he saunters down the passageway with the others.
