Chapter 4: The Waters of Menehune

Jul 20, 2024 5:11 pm
Regan hops down and heads toward the octopus, almost feeling bad as it pulls itself along. Just as the creature makes it to the rising water, a tentacle touches the surface. Immediately, the octopus begins to writhe and contort, its body pulsating with unnatural energy.

The octopus's tentacles elongate and thicken, its skin shifting from a dark, mottled green to a glowing, iridescent blue. The creature's eyes, previously beady and black, swell and turn a luminous yellow. As it grows, its form becomes more monstrous, with spines protruding from its limbs and a gaping maw forming where its beak once was.

The cavern fills with an eerie light as the octopus undergoes its transformation. Before the transformation can complete, Regan raises his heavy warhammer. With a mighty swing, he brings the warhammer crashing down onto the writhing octopus. The hammer strikes true, and the creature lets out a final, agonized shriek. Its body convulses violently, then goes still, the transformation halted permanently. (Octopus takes 10 damage, and is dead)

...

Cordey puts down the mirror and forcibly releases his huge self from the entangling seaweed. As he breaks away from the gripping mess he moves himself 10' back (out of the range of the seaweed tendrils). He then readies himself for his next move.

...

Seeing that Regan is taking care of the octopus, Admiral focuses on the hag. Reaver bites deep into the hag’s flesh and, within moments, the wound begins to fester with necrotic magic. (Hag takes 17 damage) The hag hisses at Admiral in pain and with fierce anger.

...

"Attack them you useless fools!" screams the hag to the Sahuagin. But they remain still, unsure what to do.

Seething and annoyed, the hag's skin, once smooth and radiant, begins to bubble and blister. Her eyes, which previously shimmered with ethereal beauty, turn a sickly yellow, sinking into their sockets and growing larger, giving her a crazed, monstrous look. Her hair, previously disguised as flowing and lustrous is now a tangled mass of writhing, slimy seaweed tendrils that seem themselves alive.

As her transformation continues, her mouth stretches into a grotesque, jagged maw, filled with sharp, rotting teeth. Her fingers elongate, turning into twisted, bony claws that drip with a vile, dark ichor. The very sight of her now causes an involuntary shiver to run down the spines of anyone who looks upon her.

"You will ALL pay for this!" she screeches, her voice now a guttural, echoing wail that reverberates through the cavern. "Witness the true sight of your doom!"

As the hag's appearance becomes even more horrific, the Fossergrim, the Sahuagin guards, and the party members wrestle with paralyzing fear. Some sahuagin stagger back, unable to tear their gaze away from the monstrosity before them.

Everyone must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save your character is frightened for 1 minute.

A frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if the hag is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Cordey makes his save. She is just ugly.
Huge Cordey wants to close and combat the horrid Hag but also totally doesn't want to get snagged by the grasping seaweed either. So, he sheaves his faithful cutlass and draws out his hardly ever used light crossbow. His aim is way off and doesn't come close to the now ugly Hag.

Admiral feels his fur stand on end at the sight of the hag’s transformation. He continues to stab and slash at her but, shaken, his movements aren’t quite as quick or confident as usual. As the hag bats aside his sword for the second time, he glances down at the shard of crystal he wears on a leather cord around his neck and reminds himself that this is far from the most frightening monster he’s faced.

"HO-LY SHIT, what happened to your face, lady?" Regan blurts out a reply as soon as he turned around from the octopus. Unnerved at the hideous beast before him, he is still reluctant to move any closer. Choosing instead to whittle down the Sahaugin, so Admiral has less distraction in his current battle, Regan conjures up some magical power to lash out with.
OOC:

Regan stands by the octopus corpse, unable to push himself to rush the hag. He realizes that the water level has quickly risen, and continues to do so. It is already up to his shins. Not being able to voluntarily move closer to the hag, he reacts by blasting the fear frozen Sahuagin (S1) by the stairs with Eldritch energy.

Regan's blast hits the unwitting sahuagin, whose gaze is fearfully fixed on the hag. Its already weakened frame--from Regan's previous hammer blow--cannot absorb the Eldritch attack and it falls to the cavern floor motionless. (S1 takes 11 damage and is dead)

Sahuagin 2 gets distracted from the fearful sight of the hag by its fallen comrade. It turns its attention toward Regan. Meanwhile seaweed lashes out at the man, but he spots it and dodges its grasp.

Cordey, as he sends a bolt flying toward the hag, also notices that a layer of water spreads toward him on the cavern floor below the dais.

Admiral, unnerved by the hag's hideous appearance (despite the calm and focusing energy offered by his crystal) awkwardly attempts to attack the witch who is right next to him. She bats aside Admiral's swords as Cordey's bolt flies past her and she laughs a ferocious horrid cackle.

A seaweed tendril lashes out at Admiral from behind him. It whips him and then wraps around his waist. (Admiral takes 6 damage and must pass a STR check DC 12)

The hag's frightful maddened look intensifies with a taunting grin which is accompanied by a flash of lightning and swirling winds above the cavern lake. Immediately after the flash, she disappears as a thunderous boom sounds that reverberates loudly through the cavern.
OOC:
Everyone within 10' (which includes all three in your party) must make a Constitution saving throw, taking 3d10 thunder damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
The hag reappears next to Cordey hissing and brandishing her long twisted, bony claws that drip with a vile, dark ichor.
OOC:
Cordey and Admiral will not be frightened next round. Regan must still pass a WIS save DC 11 to avoid that.

Huge Cordey is blasted by the thundering sounds and sudden appears of the evil Hag before as well as the rising of worrisome water. He has no fear of the ugly Hag or the rising water, but he is sure that Admiral & Regan is a different matter. Not that he wishes to fight beneath the waves.

Quick Cordey lowers his expensive light crossbow to the ground at his feet and his faithful cutlass is going into needed action. The messy Hag avoids his first quick stroke but he second efforts draws pain from the evil Hag.

Regan continues to feel the icy grip of fear tightening around his resolve. His usually steady hands tremble slightly at the idea of rushing the hag. When the thunder ripples through cavern. He staggers, feeling its impact resonate through his body. (Regan takes 11 thunder step damage.)

...

When the thunderous energy crashes through the cavern, Cordey winces but manages to brace himself to make an attack nonetheless. (Cordey takes 8 thunder step damage.)

With his massive frame, the half-elf steps forward to engage the hag. His first swing with his cutlass misses, the blade slicing through the air. He focuses and swings again. This time, his cutlass finds its mark, slashing across the hag's side and drawing a hiss of pain from her, his powerful blow causes the hag to stagger back. (Hag takes 10 damage)

...

The blast of thunderous energy hits Admiral squarely causing him to yelp in pain, feeling the full brunt of the attack, but his focus remains unbroken. He maintains his concentration on the hex he has cast upon the hag. (Admiral takes 16 thunder step damage.)

D etermined to bring the hag down, Admiral, entangled in the seaweed's grasp, adeptly frees himself. With a surge of effort, he tears through the clinging tendrils and leaps down from the dais to continue the assault on the hag.

Admiral lunges at the hag, his twin blades reflecting the fire flickering in the dimly lit cavern. Reaver cuts deep into the hag's flesh, drawing a shriek of agony from her. (hag 17 damage.) Not pausing, Admiral follows up with the Defender Blade. In a stroke of incredible skill the blade bites deeply into the hag. (hag takes 24 damage)

...

The hag reels from the onslaught. Thick black blood flows from her wounds, and her eyes blaze with rage. (Hag takes 51 damage TOTAL. )

The hag places both of her hands behind her waist, grabs somethings from within tangled seaweed hanging there, and then quickly flings two spiky sea urchins, one at Admiral, one at Cordey. The spiky creatures ark with electricity in the air as they fly. Both hit their mark.

Admiral 5 takes piercing damage and 14 lightning damage. Cordey takes 6 piercing damage and 9 lightning damage. Both have to pass a DC 14 CON save or be stunned until the end of their next turn.
...

Sahuagin 2 attacks Regan with a one-handed spear followed by a scraping claw. At the same time a seaweed tendril lashes out toward Regan. Regan focuses and dodges both of the sahuagins' attacks and deflects the seaweed tendril from grabbing him.

...

Meanwhile the water level rises and spills over the side of the fire pit and begins to douse the flames, resulting in thick mist spreading out form the fire pit, making it hard for both Admiral and Cordey to see. The mist hasn't reached Regan yet.

The water is rising past everyone's waist. (Well, maybe still slightly below Cordey's waist.)

Sahuagin 3 and sahuagin 4 seem to regain their composure, snapping out of their confusion and fear. Sahuagin 5 remains paralyzed with fear and remains in place. S3 runs to help S2 attack Regan and S4 notices and follows behind.

OOC:
oopsylon! One thing I didn't think of! It is a bit more urgent for Admiral. Since he has fallen unconscious with Zero HP, he has fallen to the cavern floor, which is filling up with water!

We have to consider this. Let's say the first successful death save you already made is fine. Now going forward, Admiral will have to make a CON save DC 10 to avoid taking damage from breathing in water in his unconscious state. Taking damage like this makes for an automatic death save fail. If the CON save is successful, Admiral must still make a regular death save.

BUT, you may declare before making either of these rolls that you will allow Reaver to channel life force into Admiral. This choice (costing 100 Pact Tally Points) will avoid the water damage to Admiral and will also result in a successful death save for that turn.
