Call for Submissions - Fantasy Stories

Feb 27, 2024 12:54 am
Following on the heels of The Games We Play, our second anthology (as yet untitled) will focus on fantasy stories.

Fantasy Literature defined: Fantasy literature is literature set in an imaginary universe, often but not always without any locations, events, or people from the real world. Magic, the supernatural and magical creatures are common in many of these imaginary worlds. Fantasy literature may be directed at both children and adults.

Fantasy is considered a genre of speculative fiction and is distinguished from the genres of science fiction and horror by the absence of scientific or macabre themes, respectively, though these may overlap.

What we propose is to curate and publish a collection of short stories written by Gamers Plane's own community. This is a call for those fantasy stories. Bring us your wildest adventures, fantastic characters, and epic tales. Think anything from classic Arthurian tales, to the supernatural worlds of Neil Gaiman or J.K. Rowling, from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars.

Magic exists in the world, but it is brought to life by writers.

The Games We Play 2 is a publishing project dreamed up by Qralloq and Thielindra, husband and wife writers. Over the past many years, we've attended numerous conferences on writing, participated in professional writing groups, written many stories, and sold several for publishing. We also edit and critique manuscripts written by other published authors in our personal writing groups. Qralloq self-published his own novel in 2018. The first anthology, the Games We Play was published early in 2023.

Who Can Submit
This call will only be open to members of GP. Prior publishing credits or experience not required.

Genre Expectations
Unlike the prior anthology, this one will focus on fantasy literature.

Word Limit
Word Count: 2000 to 15,000. (Longer pieces will be considered on an individual basis, dependent on length and number of other stories submitted.) We're targeting the neighbourhood of 100,000 total words (give or take).

Submissions Conditions
Accepts Multiple Submissions
Accepts Unpublished Pieces and limited number of reprints.
Accepts Simultaneous Submissions, but please let us know if your story is accepted elsewhere.
Standard formatting preferred, but not required.

Our Process
1. Advertise -- This!
2. Answer questions. Q and A on GP forum.
3. Time Limit -- the submission window will be open for three months, ending on May 31, 2024. While we will acknowledge receipt of stories submitted as we receive them, acceptance will only be communicated after the submission window closes.
4. Read the submissions -- we may need several weeks to get through the slush pile, but we'll intend to complete that in June.
5. Select the pieces best suited -- this is by necessity somewhat arbitrary, and we reserve the right to make our choices and live by them.
6. Provide constructive criticism to rejected stories, so that the authors who submitted early enough may have a chance to resubmit before the deadline.
7. We reserve the right to make minor editorial changes (spelling, spacing, etc.). Final proof copies will be sent to authors before publication.
8. Provide contracts, and receive signed copies back. (see Frequently Asked Questions regarding contract details.)
9. Layout, design, cover art, and formatting.
10. Publish! (tentatively mid-summer 2024).
Please send submissions to eastontales@gmail.com with GWP2 and your story name as the subject of your email.

You may submit more than one story.

We'd prefer to use Google Docs, rich text, or Microsoft Word, as those tools will make the editing process easier. If you send your story in a different format, we'll try to accommodate but can promise nothing.

Royalties
We will pay $10 Canadian for stories under 5,000 words, $15 Canadian for stories 5,000 to 9,999 words, and $20 Canadian for stories of 10,000 words and over. Payment will only be made through Paypal (or e-transfer within Canada). Payment will be initiated within 24 hours of publication.
