M'Ress took out her own pad and scanned the data, looking for conventional and unconventional signatures that would signify life of any Tier. She is less concerned about rescuing sentient survivors from the mess of debris, as the likelihood of that seems slim.

As asteroids studied by earlier Explorations had been known to uncover sleeping bacteria or worse she was concerned....even more so if the life forms came from another reality.
OOC:
Does she see anything..concerning?

Jayce gives a playful smile back to his commander. "Yes. I believe a counselor is always good to have around."

Jayce greatly admires Lieutenant Aurin-Ah's dedication and intellect. He values his contribution to the team, which cannot be understated. And he knows that the Captain respects the science officer's mind as well. He trusts the Aurelian officer's assessment that the probability of lifeforms on the asteroids is low.

Still...if he has learned anything as an officer in deep space, he has learned that the previously unknown can be encountered at any moment. Besides, he recalls his Starfleet 23rd century psychology class covering an encounter of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 with a non carbon silicon-based life form that protected its offspring from miners on the Janus VI mining colony. In any case the crew should be prepared for anything.

Luna was trying to follow the scientific talk around the table but drifted off mentally this was not really her metier. But at least now it was clear to her why she was at the meeting. Someone needs to fly the brainiacs out to look at the thing.

"My concerns" she replies Commander Walker in an equally quiet voice while the other officers are still taking "is for everyone to stay cool while we go into the asteroid field. I'm not going to hit any of them but it might be close at times. We need a small maneuverable shuttlecraft. A Danube class might be too big and cumbersome.
We should all be able to fit in a shuttle unless the science team wants to bring some big luggage."

"You can count on it, Commander," Drake replied.

Despite the probability being low of their being lifeforms on the asteroids, Drake secretly hoped for it and knew there was a chance. His primary concern was the safety and security of the ship of course, but Xenobiology had become a passion of his after a chance encounter during his time at Starfleet Academy. Inspired by the incident, he embarked on a dual path of study, immersing himself not only in the intricacies of security and defense but also in the mysteries of xenobiology. He delved into the nuances of alien physiology, cultural customs, and communication methods.

If it came to it, and he hoped it wouldn't, he could offer his skills in Emergency Medicine as well.

Having said his initial piece, the Chief Science Officer took a few moments head-down to scan the data, looking for both any validation of his hypotheses, or any signs of clear danger from the nature of the scans - or, frankly, anything that stood out to him. He would need real time to draw anything more nuanced from the stream of information - quantum physics was a tricky beast at the best of times, and he was no specialist.

He was also double checking for any signs of malfunction in the probe. No need to get crushed in an asteroid belt if there was nothing going on, after all.

Dividing his attention across the multiple conversations currently being conducted at the table, Cole's eyes narrowed slightly in concentration, nodding as young aquamarine haired Lieutenant confirmed his suspicions regarding the recommended size of craft.

"The safety of the team takes precedence --- as the one piloting us into that mess, you tell us what you want. Even if that means we have to leave some of the toys at home," he affirmed in his typical no nonsense tone, loud enough for the others to hear.

Devar notices Dr. M'Ress' furrowed brow while she scans her pad. He recognizes that worried look of hers and the slight raising of her fur on the back of her neck. She is concerned for the safety of the away team and the safety of the entire ship's crew, he knows that.

He moves to her and while she works he suggests, "Doctor, remember that sometimes the unknown or unprecedented is impossible to identify until it reveals itself. So don't carry that weight. But one thing I know, is that if some contaminant does reveal itself amongst those rocks you are the one with the skill to determine how best to handle it."

"The safety of the team does take precedence, Commander, of course. That's why I recommend a Danube."

"A runabout is equipped with a tractor beam and a full transporter suite, meaning that we do not have to personally handle the samples if they prove to be unsafe. In an environment like a dense asteroid belt, a powerful tractor beam will also be an invaluable navigational tool, and a full transporter pad will enable evacaution if necessary. Furthermore, a runabout will enable us to hold the samples in the cargo bay, separated from the crew by an atmospherically and radiologically secure bulkhead that is not dependent on ship's power. A fully independent mission pod can be used to contain the samples outside the hull if they prove to be too unstable to keep aboard."

"If we travel in, say, a type 2 shuttle, we'll be carrying grams of samples practically in our pockets that we will have to pick out of space rocks with hand tools and pressure suits. In a runabout, we will be able to extract kilograms of samples in secure, shielded containers, and have the space and equipment to conduct preliminary tests to ensure they are safe to bring aboard the Christa."

He folded his hands. "And, frankly, if I may speak freely... any environment where the difference in size and maneuverability between a runabout and a smaller shuttlecraft makes a substantial difference in safety is an environment we should not be sending crewed vessels into outside of an emergency situation. I am perfectly prepared to utilize robotics to retrieve these samples if the danger is too great."

"I'm inclined to agree with Aurin. Safety has to come first and a runabout seems to fit the bill for this type of mission."

While the Chief Science Officer made him a little nervous, mostly because he'd never met an Aurelian, he did have a lot of knowledge to impart and the process of Drake digesting all the information took his mind off his discomfort. With time and interaction, he had no doubt he would adjust.
Mar 14, 2024 3:23 pm
Offering the Aurelian science officer a small dip of his head in consent, he turned to Lt. Vilchis, "It seems a strong case has been given --- Unless you have any strong objections?"

Turning to the Captain, "Permission sir to have the Lieutenants Aurin-Ah and Vilchis convene in the shuttle bay and coordinate fitting out one of the runabouts per their agreed upon specifications.

"Ensign Zarah can assist Doctor M'Ress and Counselor Devar in assembling what medical supplies and equipment they would anticipate needing."
OOC:
Also @Qralloq (more for the excitement of our first roll in the game) did Doctor M'Ress find/notice anything concerning in the data?

Devar nods to Commander Walker and says, "Ensign, Doctor, I'm ready when you are. May we include tricorders equipped with biofeedback algorithms to monitor our physiological responses in case the environment causes erratic or unexpected changes?"
OOC:
Ha...That's a no brainer and probably stock medical gear, but I got to think of something for him to say.

OOC:
Purely for demonstrating the nature of the system, @The_Librarian would you care to drop a couple d20s? You want to choose an Attribute and a Discipline, and list any applicable Focuses you might have. For example, you might suggest that you are examining the data using REASON plus MEDICINE with a focus on DISEASES. This tells me exactly what you're looking for, and sets the difficulty. Using my example stats, your target number is 12 (the value of REASON 9 + MEDICINE 3), and any dice rolling less than or equal to 12 are a success. With an applicable focus, any dice rolled less than or equal to the Discipline alone count as double successes.

I'll set the task difficulty of 4. The data from the probes isn't that precise, and either Starfleet has reviewed it and didn't detect anything, or did and didn't include it in their analysis, or didn't think to look. A D4 check means you need 4 successes on your roll. This may be nearly impossible, but in the mechanics thread, there are suggestions for improving the odds. Or just roll 2d20 and see what's what.

"If the science guys wants to bring on all their toys and gadgets, so be it" Luna says with a shrug to feign indifference. Maybe we could even put on a storage trailer. It's not like we are going through an astroid field.

It would be so much easier in the smaller craft and she would have sole control. But seeing how everyone else seem set on the Danube, she accepts.
"I'll get us safe through either way, XO." she says. "I'll report at the bay at once."

OOC:
crazy busy day sorry, also just fixed my sheet as sci and medicine got flipped. I don't want to risk threat. I can't find the description for my focuses.... Focus in diseae and hazard awareness...do either grant bonus dice? I"ll drop the 2 d20s for now let me know if i need extra
M'Ress smiles and nods at the compliment. Oh I'm sure...but if we can avoid them altogether... she shrugs.

Rolls

med 5 insight 10 - (1d20, 1d20)

1d20 : (7) = 7

1d20 : (14) = 14

Mar 15, 2024 2:05 am
OOC:
Gotta pick your dice before rolling. In this case the 7 and the 14 are both successes, but as neither is 5 or less, it's just the two, so you missed the very difficult D4.
M'Ress' table-side review of if the data is unable to determine if there is a biologic component to the readings.

Nothing I can see, but that's going by raw data and known laws of life. Other crews have encountered life that breaks rules she runs a hand over her head smoothing the fur. I'll gather some supplies
Mar 16, 2024 12:43 am
"I would like my staff to continue to analyze the data in more detail. I will let them know you should expect their full cooperation if you think of anything they should sift through the numbers for for, Doctor." He nodded to M'Ress.

"In the meantime, it looks like I have some consulting to do with Engineering." Aurin-Ah's hands pressed onto the table as he rose to his feet. "By your leave, Captain, I shall join Lieutenant Luna in the aft shuttle bay to oversee any necessary modifications."

M'Ress compiles a list of possible bacterial and viral signatures to look for when she has an opportunity while packing

Drake continues to watch, listen, and learn. If he is to protect the crew, the more he knows about them the better he will be able to protect them. He also knows that he has to temper his desire to meet new life forms as that could clash with his main role on and off the ship.

"Doctor, I'd be happy to assist you with the data and assembling your materials."
Mar 16, 2024 8:34 pm
I would appreciate that, more hands, more eyes, makes eork faster and efficient. We'll need portable bio scanners, and a quarantine hood, just to be cautious. There's a laundry lost of other things too... She looks up. Captain do you intend to land on one...or just get close?
