CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 45665.7
While enroute to the nanotechnology ethics summit on Gnycish 2, Starfleet Command has ordered us to investigate the Pinicon Belt, one of the densest asteroid fields ever encountered. The tight proximity of many of the largest asteroids has prevented thorough exploration in the past, but a recent series of automated probes indicates much of the asteroid debris resonates with nearly infinite quantum signatures at the sub-atomic level. This suggests that the rocky material forming the asteroid belt originates from many different quantum realities beyond our own. Should this prove to be true, Starfleet believes the asteroid field could pose a danger to starships passing through the sector.

We’ve been ordered to retrieve asteroid samples that demonstrate these unusual quantum properties for further study. The extreme density of the asteroids will prevent our ship from entering the field, so an away team aboard a single shuttlecraft will have to carry out the mission.

As the USS Christa McAuliffe breaks out of warp near the Pinicon Belt, Captain Syrran has ordered a meeting of officers. For various reasons, each of your characters have been asked to attend. You've just arrived from your duty stations, five minutes early, and are uncertain of what the meeting is about. The captain has not yet arrived.

Let's start by describing your characters for each other. Include your current assignment, where you were on duty, your appearance, and maybe one of your Values that you'd be most known for.

Commander Jayce Devar, Chief Counselor of the USS Christa McAuliffe sits at the briefing table. His fellow officers know him as a thoughtful and careful listener. Throughout the ship's various missions and toils out in deep space, he works hard to make himself available as a sounding board for the senior crew members, as well as keeping busy managing a small team of therapists that tend to the well being of the rest of the crew (which is what he was currently pulled away from to attend this meeting). He believes a well working team must recognize members' individual strengths and understand individuals' limitations. [Value #2]

Even though Jayce's work keeps him busy and he is deeply dedicated to it, he also is fond of celebration. He loves to share the traditions of his Haliian home world with his colleagues as well as participate and learn about the traditions of their respective worlds.

The crew knows he is from Halii and a member of a telepathic and empathic species who rely on person-to-person contact to make such connection with others. As do all Haliians, Jayce has slight bulges and indentations above his eyebrows, along with a crease between his brows.

The vast, holographic orrery of Stellar Cartography swirled around Lieutenant Aurin-Ah as he rubbed his chin with a single, pseudo-scaly knuckle. His other hand glided over the console, pivoting the point of view. His vivid blue eyes turned almost black as the whole field turned a bright, hostile red, carved through with what appeared to be channels of blackened smoke.

He pinched the screen, and the USS Christa McAuliff herself appeared, a bright band of higher resolution and softer color around her indicating her sensor range. The angry red cloud seemed to ripple and pulse around the outline of the ship, leaving a swirling wake, as if passing through water laden with sediment, or delicate smoke.

"Hmm," he hummed quietly, pivoting the view, comparing the ripples of subspace from the live sensor feed to the travel corridor. The Nebula-class's larger, more powerful warp field and greater mass magnified its wake far beyond what he had become accustomed to on the geriatric, much smaller Miranda. On the one hand, he would have to work much harder to create subground states, but on the other hand, the increased power and simply the physical deck space for more instrumentation and equipment opened the doorway for any number of avenues of research.

He began to mentally fill out the requisition forms, one taloned finger turning a circle over the console. It sent the room spinning in a way that would have been nauseating to most terrestrial bipeds, but which only stimulated his highly developed optics, and gave him the momentary, if illusory, sensation of free flight. Then he caught himself, stopping short.

He wouldn't have to have anyone sign off on anything. He was Chief Science Officer. His staff were sending requisition forms to him.

It was all still a bit dazzling, after years of elbowing for laboratory space, betting sensor cycles on hands of poker, and the metaphorical knives-out, cutthroat battles for dish control. He had had enough projects backed up that he had designed a device to flutter the engines to prompt them to drop out of Warp for a maintenance check, just so the Jane Austen could drop to impulse and clear out the queue. He had almost built it, out of frustration. Almost.

Tempting as it would be to monopolize it for his own purposes, he had a staff to think of, now. A staff he hoped he could keep from elbowing, gambling, and figurative shivving as much as he could manage.

His mind hadn't had too long to wander to his more mundane duties before his comm badge chirped, his chronometer warning him of an upcoming meeting of the senior staff.

Senior staff.

He could not help but bunch one cheek behind his beak, a learned gesture akin to a human smirk.

Entering a few points of data onto his PADD, and departed into the bright hallways of the USS Christa McAuliffe, leaving the room in darkness behind him as he made for the Turbolift.

Dr. M'Ress looks tired Her tan and darker brown striped fur is still neat, and she takes great pride in her appearance. She's donned a clean jacket over her uniform, having been on call in the medbay for the last few hours. As chief Medical Officer She's always on her toes.

https://i.imgur.com/g3I1TSX.png
She isn't focused too much on the read outs on the monitors just yet. But she's always worried about some strange illness being awakened on Explorations.
That strange goo should not have made it through the transporters.
She cuts a quick glance at the out side monitors.

The crew would know her as a mostly kind woman, who will occasionally lecture about being safer in the future. Despite that she is fiercely loyal, and will protect all her charges. Even the headstrong foolish ones
As she watches the others file in she looks for signs of fatigue, or any other symptoms.

Habits, routines, once established are often times hard to break and growing up ranching, waking well before the suns broke the horizon, meant Cole was an 'early' riser despite when his shifts upon a starship might take place and meant he was sitting at his appointed chair in the senior staff conference room well ahead of the scheduled time. Enjoying the silence, his piercing eyes stared pensively over the rim of a mug of raktajino. The Klingons prided themselves on the strength of the 'coffee' like drink yet he found it not nearly as strong as the locally grown coffee - whose beans had been brought from Earth when the colony was first settled - brewed over the flames of an open fire. Snorting in small frustration, he caught his hand moving to adjust the wide brimmed hat that wasn't there. A well worn hat that hadn't been there for quite some time, not since his family had been forced to relinquish their ranch and relocate as part of the early treaties the Federation had made with the Cardassians.

His eyes narrowed thoughtfully, wondering if his family legacy might now be reclaimed. The war with the Dominion had not been kind to the Cardies, their once great empire in ruins and their population decimated. Rumors rippling through Starfleet were the Breen were expanding, claiming sectors of Cardassian space the once proud race could no longer defend. A small, smug smile tugged at the corners of Cole's lips as he pondered what a retirement that would be, ousting the Breen from his family's lands, as he sipped at his steaming cup.

The uniform, creased and squared away as regulations dictated, barely covered the rugged and tough prickly demeanor of his frontier upbringing. His square chin, covered by a well maintained beard, still showed the weathered and creases of one who spent a considerable amount of time in the elements. The Academy smoothed some of his rough edges but not all, particularly his attitude on loving what you do and working hard at it.

As the staff began to filter in, his eyes met those of Doctor M'Ress, feeling those feline eyes appraising and assessing him, "I don't have the energy for that today," he stated gruffly, sipping his coffee. He knew their Chief Medical Officer meant well, and dedicated to the crews' well-being with a work ethic he could admire, but the life of a rancher was more 'walk it off' then seeking medical advice.

Drake arrives promptly, that is five minutes early because being late would be unimaginable. Promptness, attention to detail, and adherence to all protocols, all rules and regulations as they pertained to the security of the ship and its personnel, were the things Drake prided himself on and how he hoped to make his mark as he rose through the ranks of the security department. His loyalty and dedication to the crew were of the utmost importance and there would be no bending of security procedures under any circumstances.

Was he idealistic and perhaps a touch arrogant? Some might say yes. These were small flaws in the scheme of things and they were more than made up for by his remaining true to his ideals.

As he enters the conference room he sees Dr. M'Ress, his favorite crewmember although you'd never hear that from him, and pats her gently on the arm.

"Hello doctor. I'm fine. Never felt better." Smiling, he knew she was evaluating the crew, always caring for her charges. This is what drew him to her. Whether it was the lack of attention from his parents as a youth, with them always busy running the museum, or some weakness in his personality, he didn't know.

Remaining standing, he tugged his uniform sleeves, a habit he'd had as long as he could remember, and waited for the meeting to begin.

Luna Vilchis arrives at the very last minute. Not late but not really on time either.
"Hi all" she says perhaps a bit too casually and with the air of self-assured superiority only found in young people. But actually, she has no idea why she was summoned to this meeting. She is just junior staff. She guesses it is because she is THE best pilot and helmsman onboard the Christa.
She prides herself on being able to steer any craft but her heart beats for the smaller, faster craft. The ones that can do fast maneuvers. So of course she is invited.

She takes the time to fill a cup of coffee before finding her a seat.

"Lieutenant." Aurin offered politely in response to the informal greeting, looking up from his PADD with some amusement. Scanning the room, he took in the present staff, a thumb running over the edge of his beak. "This has the looks of an Away mission." His eyes turned back down to the data for a moment, before glancing around the room to the assembled crew. "Any word from the Captain?"

The Doctor smiled, her tail flicking slightly, as her crew mates acknowledged her. She shook her head at Walkers comment, and hid a laugh with her own coffee.

Pleased to notice Doctor M'Ress assessing the crew and confident that the doctor is keeping all in good health, Jayce looks around himself to assess everyone's demeanor:

Science Officer Aurin-Ah looks content while engaged in calculations in his PADD as expected.

Commander Walker looks lost in thought but ready to snap to duty.

Lieutenant Vilchis, looks excited to be present, surely prepared for her expertise to be called upon.

Security Officer, Ensign Drake emitting an air of confidence as always, but tugging on his sleeves again.

The team seems in positive spirits overall and ready for the briefing as he expected.

"No word yet but I'm sure our captain will be with us shortly Lieutenant," replies Jayce to the science officer.

Exactly on time, Captain Syrran steps into the room, and sits at a central side chair. His eyes are for the display screen on the wall. "Computer, display the screen from my ready room."

The screen flashes to a high depth field display of the belt. "Our journey to Gynish 2 will have to be delayed. Starfleet has ordered us to obtain samples from deep inside the Pinicon Belt. As one of the densest asteroid fields ever encountered, a series of automated probes was dispatched as the the tight proximity of the asteroids has prevented thorough exploration in the past. Starfleet has only just received the data from the probes and provided preliminary analysis.

Much of the asteroid debris resonates with nearly infinite quantum signatures at the sub-atomic level. This suggests that the rocky material forming the asteroid belt originates from many different quantum realities beyond our own. Should this prove to be true, Starfleet believes the asteroid field could pose a danger to starships passing through the sector."

He gestures precisely and the display flickers, focusing on a few likely targets within the spectral map of quantum signatures.

"Your mission, Commander Walker, is to take a shuttle deep into the asteroid field, and obtain direct physical samples from the richest examples we can find. As we discussed earlier, your team is already assembled. Officers, please discuss the mission, then Commander Walker will assume command." It's the Vulcan's style, to encourage debate but once that debate window has been accomplished, to pick a plan and expect orders to be obeyed without hesitation.

Mar 13, 2024 4:16 am
"Infinite quantum signatures? Infinity is quite a large number, Captain." Aurin-Ah leaned forwards, bright green brows furrowing, trying to glean from the display what the readings meant. "Do we have the raw data at our disposal?" He meant no disrespect to whatever of his peers gathered the information, but his first instinct was to check for signs of the probe malfunctioning.

Have we scanned the samples for disease signatures? I would recommend filters and decontamination as a precaution regardless. Especially with a shuttle mission.
She narrows her eyes. Id like to see the data as well
Mar 13, 2024 1:19 pm
As the Captain entered, precisely on time, Cole couldn't help but hide a knowing smile behind the rim of his mug unsurprised at the Vulcan's meticulous adherence to schedule. With little emotion nor ceremony the CO took his chair and without greeting began the briefing. Having been given the details of the mission prior to the meeting - to aide the Captain in crew selection - his mind drifting to what complications they might encounter, already anticipating how they might be handled should they arise.

It was he who advocated to Captain Syrran on the inclusion of their Chief Medical and Science Officers and already his selections were proving their merit, wasting little time in driving to the point - Cole couldn't help but smirk in knowing that the Vulcan would no doubt appreciate the efficiency. Keeping his eyes on the pair of scientists he leaned towards Luna and in a quiet voice, so as not to interrupt the ongoing discussion between the science officers and the Captain, "As one of the densest asteroid fields and the expectation that we are to penetrate deep into the interior what concerns do you have and/or mods to the shuttle you would require?". Chuckling slightly he added, "All this science won't amount to a hill of beans if we get pulverized trying to obtain it."
Mar 13, 2024 1:20 pm
Counselor Devar considers the information and adds,

"Considering the dense quantum signatures detected within the Pinicon Belt, I'm curious if the automated probes also picked up any indications of lifeform signatures amidst the asteroid debris. If so, we must be prepared for what implications might this have for our mission and the potential inhabitants? Commander Walker, may I suggest that Doctor M'Ress and Lieutenant Aurin-Ah both scan the data for signs of lifeforms?"

The captain indicates the data screen. "This is taken directly from my own analysis, and matches Starfleets. All of the data from the probes is in our files. Although it hasn't been declassified for general distribution yet, you each have full access. "

You know the Vulcan to be scientifically minded and up-to-date on much of it. He also is one to double check findings presented to him, and from the blank look he gives Auran-Ah and the doctor, he expects nothing less from your team.
Mar 13, 2024 2:27 pm
"Commander Walker, what would my assignment be for this mission?" Drake asked during an appropriate lull in the conversations.

He wanted to appear enthusiastic rather than overly eager. The possibility of coming across other forms of life, especially those never discovered before, excited the young man.
Mar 13, 2024 4:30 pm
"Computer, the files Pincion Belt probe raw data, please." Aurin waved his PADD a little bit, for emphasis, as Christa provided him access to the information. A few taps populated it to M'Ress' authorized access.

His eyes turned downwards as he scanned it. "With quantum instability of this magnitude, I'm not optimistic we'll find any conventional life signs, outside of, perhaps, lower silicate forms found in other asteroids." He had confidence that the Doctor would be ahead of him on organic analysis, and he was prepared to be pleasantly surprised on that front. Though he was no biologist, deep space life was always inspiring, at least, if not terribly interesting.

"I'm quite concerned about potential gravitational and quantum anomalies." One clawed finger brushed the bridged tip of his beak. "It may explain the density of the asteroid field - some kind of anomaly spewing out matter from another quantum level, or even some kind of... phased overlap," a circular motion of his wrist communicated the wildness of his conjecture, "Objects from multiple levels existing simultaneously out of phase, but still exhibiting some properties of mass. Or hopefully out of phase, and not explosively trying to occupy the same space at the same time."

He caught his eye drifting as he was half talking to himself, snapping his attention back to the table. "Between my team and engineering, I am sure we can rig up a container to a Danube mission pod that would be reasonably safe to tractor the mass into. But if this matter is as irregular as these readings seem to suggest, well... they could range from inert pieces of space rock that make your tricorder chirp at the quaint strangeness, to explosively unstable sources of massive doses of radiation" he shrugged, wishing his analysis could be more helpful. He supposed that was why they had to get a closer look. "But I certainly wouldn't ask my team to touch them with their bare hands."

"On a more... immediately practical level, if the debris is being... shall we say... sourced elsewhere, we can expect extremely irregular orbits and trajectories. Whatever craft goes in will need quite a steady hand on the tiller, as they say."
Mar 13, 2024 6:58 pm
"You will be expected to provide security and support Ensign," Cole responded to the security officer's question, leaning back to cross his arms, an air of satisfaction about him as he listened to scientist's preliminary assessment. Already the avian-like humanoid was coordinating his assumptions with the doctor, a pleased smirk on Cole's face as he also addressed Commander Devar's concerns.

"Despite the Lieutenant's lack of optimism on finding intelligent lifeforms, one would suppose the usefulness of having an Empath along should life be encountered --- would you not agree Counselor?" he quipped, meeting the Haliian's eyes with a small feigned innocent smile.

M'Ress took out her own pad and scanned the data, looking for conventional and unconventional signatures that would signify life of any Tier. She is less concerned about rescuing sentient survivors from the mess of debris, as the likelihood of that seems slim.

As asteroids studied by earlier Explorations had been known to uncover sleeping bacteria or worse she was concerned....even more so if the life forms came from another reality.

Jayce gives a playful smile back to his commander. "Yes. I believe a counselor is always good to have around."

Jayce greatly admires Lieutenant Aurin-Ah's dedication and intellect. He values his contribution to the team, which cannot be understated. And he knows that the Captain respects the science officer's mind as well. He trusts the Aurelian officer's assessment that the probability of lifeforms on the asteroids is low.

Still...if he has learned anything as an officer in deep space, he has learned that the previously unknown can be encountered at any moment. Besides, he recalls his Starfleet 23rd century psychology class covering an encounter of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 with a non carbon silicon-based life form that protected its offspring from miners on the Janus VI mining colony. In any case the crew should be prepared for anything.

Luna was trying to follow the scientific talk around the table but drifted off mentally this was not really her metier. But at least now it was clear to her why she was at the meeting. Someone needs to fly the brainiacs out to look at the thing.

"My concerns" she replies Commander Walker in an equally quiet voice while the other officers are still taking "is for everyone to stay cool while we go into the asteroid field. I'm not going to hit any of them but it might be close at times. We need a small maneuverable shuttlecraft. A Danube class might be too big and cumbersome.
We should all be able to fit in a shuttle unless the science team wants to bring some big luggage."
Mar 14, 2024 3:10 am
"You can count on it, Commander," Drake replied.

Despite the probability being low of their being lifeforms on the asteroids, Drake secretly hoped for it and knew there was a chance. His primary concern was the safety and security of the ship of course, but Xenobiology had become a passion of his after a chance encounter during his time at Starfleet Academy. Inspired by the incident, he embarked on a dual path of study, immersing himself not only in the intricacies of security and defense but also in the mysteries of xenobiology. He delved into the nuances of alien physiology, cultural customs, and communication methods.

If it came to it, and he hoped it wouldn't, he could offer his skills in Emergency Medicine as well.
Mar 14, 2024 4:29 am
Having said his initial piece, the Chief Science Officer took a few moments head-down to scan the data, looking for both any validation of his hypotheses, or any signs of clear danger from the nature of the scans - or, frankly, anything that stood out to him. He would need real time to draw anything more nuanced from the stream of information - quantum physics was a tricky beast at the best of times, and he was no specialist.

He was also double checking for any signs of malfunction in the probe. No need to get crushed in an asteroid belt if there was nothing going on, after all.
Mar 14, 2024 11:57 am
Dividing his attention across the multiple conversations currently being conducted at the table, Cole's eyes narrowed slightly in concentration, nodding as young aquamarine haired Lieutenant confirmed his suspicions regarding the recommended size of craft.

"The safety of the team takes precedence --- as the one piloting us into that mess, you tell us what you want. Even if that means we have to leave some of the toys at home," he affirmed in his typical no nonsense tone, loud enough for the others to hear.

Devar notices Dr. M'Ress' furrowed brow while she scans her pad. He recognizes that worried look of hers and the slight raising of her fur on the back of her neck. She is concerned for the safety of the away team and the safety of the entire ship's crew, he knows that.

He moves to her and while she works he suggests, "Doctor, remember that sometimes the unknown or unprecedented is impossible to identify until it reveals itself. So don't carry that weight. But one thing I know, is that if some contaminant does reveal itself amongst those rocks you are the one with the skill to determine how best to handle it."

"The safety of the team does take precedence, Commander, of course. That's why I recommend a Danube."

"A runabout is equipped with a tractor beam and a full transporter suite, meaning that we do not have to personally handle the samples if they prove to be unsafe. In an environment like a dense asteroid belt, a powerful tractor beam will also be an invaluable navigational tool, and a full transporter pad will enable evacaution if necessary. Furthermore, a runabout will enable us to hold the samples in the cargo bay, separated from the crew by an atmospherically and radiologically secure bulkhead that is not dependent on ship's power. A fully independent mission pod can be used to contain the samples outside the hull if they prove to be too unstable to keep aboard."

"If we travel in, say, a type 2 shuttle, we'll be carrying grams of samples practically in our pockets that we will have to pick out of space rocks with hand tools and pressure suits. In a runabout, we will be able to extract kilograms of samples in secure, shielded containers, and have the space and equipment to conduct preliminary tests to ensure they are safe to bring aboard the Christa."

He folded his hands. "And, frankly, if I may speak freely... any environment where the difference in size and maneuverability between a runabout and a smaller shuttlecraft makes a substantial difference in safety is an environment we should not be sending crewed vessels into outside of an emergency situation. I am perfectly prepared to utilize robotics to retrieve these samples if the danger is too great."

"I'm inclined to agree with Aurin. Safety has to come first and a runabout seems to fit the bill for this type of mission."

While the Chief Science Officer made him a little nervous, mostly because he'd never met an Aurelian, he did have a lot of knowledge to impart and the process of Drake digesting all the information took his mind off his discomfort. With time and interaction, he had no doubt he would adjust.
Mar 14, 2024 3:23 pm
Offering the Aurelian science officer a small dip of his head in consent, he turned to Lt. Vilchis, "It seems a strong case has been given --- Unless you have any strong objections?"

Turning to the Captain, "Permission sir to have the Lieutenants Aurin-Ah and Vilchis convene in the shuttle bay and coordinate fitting out one of the runabouts per their agreed upon specifications.

"Ensign Zarah can assist Doctor M'Ress and Counselor Devar in assembling what medical supplies and equipment they would anticipate needing."

Purely for demonstrating the nature of the system, @The_Librarian would you care to drop a couple d20s? You want to choose an Attribute and a Discipline, and list any applicable Focuses you might have. For example, you might suggest that you are examining the data using REASON plus MEDICINE with a focus on DISEASES. This tells me exactly what you're looking for, and sets the difficulty. Using my example stats, your target number is 12 (the value of REASON 9 + MEDICINE 3), and any dice rolling less than or equal to 12 are a success. With an applicable focus, any dice rolled less than or equal to the Discipline alone count as double successes.

I'll set the task difficulty of 4. The data from the probes isn't that precise, and either Starfleet has reviewed it and didn't detect anything, or did and didn't include it in their analysis, or didn't think to look. A D4 check means you need 4 successes on your roll. This may be nearly impossible, but in the mechanics thread, there are suggestions for improving the odds. Or just roll 2d20 and see what's what.

"If the science guys wants to bring on all their toys and gadgets, so be it" Luna says with a shrug to feign indifference. Maybe we could even put on a storage trailer. It's not like we are going through an astroid field.

It would be so much easier in the smaller craft and she would have sole control. But seeing how everyone else seem set on the Danube, she accepts.
"I'll get us safe through either way, XO." she says. "I'll report at the bay at once."

"In the meantime, it looks like I have some consulting to do with Engineering." Aurin-Ah's hands pressed onto the table as he rose to his feet. "By your leave, Captain, I shall join Lieutenant Luna in the aft shuttle bay to oversee any necessary modifications."

Drake continues to watch, listen, and learn. If he is to protect the crew, the more he knows about them the better he will be able to protect them. He also knows that he has to temper his desire to meet new life forms as that could clash with his main role on and off the ship.

"Doctor, I'd be happy to assist you with the data and assembling your materials."

Luna goes straight for the shuttle bay. She arrives there before the others and takes some time to load up a star map of the nearby Pinicon Belt.
It is dense for sure but what she wants to know is how fast the astroids are moving and the turning frequency of the larger ones. This knowledge could turn out to be a life saver in a tight spot.

"By your leave, Captain." Aurin found his feet and, glancing over his shoulder, swept into the corridor to make his way to the shuttle bay.

Aurin emerged from the turbolift into the flight control deck. He had called for engineering to meet him in the bay to oversee the modifications, but he certainly had a few minutes to smooth ruffled feathers.

He approached the console where Luna was engaging in some cartography, his head tipping slightly. "I don't believe you were dismissed, lieutenant." It wasn't a reprimand - his voice was more concerned. Curious. He approached the console, taking note of her study. "I get the impression you don't agree with the plan I've proposed. I... hope you don't think I was overriding your concerns, and not just presenting my own assessment."
OOC:
When Engineering arrives, Aurin would like to repurpose a tactical mission pod. He would like to adjust a phaser for low intensity cutting to separate samples, mount a micro tractor beam for fine manipulation, and retrofit the torpedo tubes to accept specimen containers. Aurin's plan is to use the phaser (if necessary) like a mining laser to cut away samples, and tractor them into an internally shielded hazmat containers in the mission pod, then, if it seems safe and stable, to beam the samples aboard into the cargo bay, where they can be examined before they are brought on board the ship proper.

Beyond the basic medical supplies taken on shuttle missions and something to isolate samples or crewmen from potential exposure, she doesn't go overboard. the shuttle isn't that big after all

Drake helps the Doctor and Devar collect what they need for the mission. He then runs diagnostics on the runabouts, weapons, and shields. When he is satisfied that everything is in order he checks to make sure that he looks professional, smart, and capable.
Mar 17, 2024 8:46 pm
Luna looks up from the cartography as Aurin enters. "No worries." she replies. The preparation had eased her annoyance of not getting it her way.
"I was just studying the field. I think we can manage it with the Danube. I get it that the science team needs their equipment." She returns her attention to the map. Here, take a look at this. she points out a few interesting details to Aurin.

Cole smiled over the rim of his coffee cup, content to remain sitting and finish his morning beverage, as the rest of the officers followed the Captain out. One of the perks of being XO he supposed as he drained the last remnants of the thick, black Klingon beverage. Replacing the mug back in the replicator, and straightening the heavy gray top of his fatigues, he too exited the briefing room and strode confidently to the turbolift knowing that the mission prep had begun in earnest and satisfied with the ideas being put forward thus far.
OOC:

"Good. We'll be counting on you." He looked down at his right hand, the yellow-gray pseudoscales cut through with strange, veinous scars that had grown back almost bleach white. He seemed to drift off in a moment of contemplation, before she brought his attention back to the console.

"Oh? What is it?" He leaned forward, eager to listen. He knew what about the asteroid field had concerned him, but knowing what caught Luna's attention about it might grant some insight, especially if he would be keeping an eye out for her at the sensor console.
Mar 18, 2024 9:38 pm
"Well, some of the larger asteroids have a gravity pull, which means there is a risk of collisions if we approach them straight on. Especially this one, it is almost 250 miles in diameter. We'll have to loop it... I mean orbit it to avoid it." The large asteriod is obvious on the map.

"But then there are these." she indicates at a very negligible group of asteroids. "C-types. They are dark and almost impossible to get a visual on. We have to scan for these. It is important, they move fast and even one of 1-2 meters in diameter would prove fatal."

"Control, we are clear. Course 010-mark-271. Elevation 6 degrees."

The small craft flies into open space, leaving the safety of Christa and setting a course for the Pinicon Pelt and it wealth of asteroids.

As they approach the Belt, Luna decreases the speed.

Aurin, crouched over one of the hexagonal containers arrayed in the cargo bay, rose to his feet as he felt the gentle stir of the shuttle. Satisfied that the field reinforced casks would contain any unusual radiation from the samples, he moved from the aft cargo bay and onto the flight deck, taking a seat at one of the rear operations consoles.

"All of the mission equipment is reporting green, Commander. We should be ready to proceed to the first extraction site."

Cole couldn't help but imagine the furrowing of Captain Syrran's Vulcan brow at the pilot's exuberance. As Luna approached the Belt she began to decrease speed, affording Cole the opportunity to address his scientists.

"Lieutenant Vilchis provided the options --- do we want to dive right in and try a big one? Or skirt the edge and see what we can get before attempting the hard stuff?"

"If I may, which action causes the least risk?" Drake interjects. "Safety is paramount. I've double-checked the diagnostics on the photon torpedo launch systems and the phaser arrays. All is in working order, Captain."
Mar 19, 2024 6:40 pm
"I believe it would be prudent to test the apparatus and get preliminary readings on the samples from the less hazardous outer areas." Aurin swiveled the sensors' focus towards the nearest collection site the probe had flagged. "Once we're confident in the procedure, and confident that these space rocks won't rip a hole in spacetime while we are being borne down on by a dwarf planet, we can try for the larger concentrations nearer the heart of the belt."
Mar 19, 2024 9:13 pm
"Whatever you prefer., XO. I can do both. But it seems like caution has the vote, so I'll try to get close the the edge, so the team can do the preliminary readings.

Mar 20, 2024 3:10 am
Asteroids of varying size, some much larger than a starship, loom just outside the shuttle’s viewports and stretch on for as far as you can see. The asteroids often drift within meters of one another and sometimes even collide. Navigating to the center of the asteroid field will take some careful piloting.

Luna navigates the runabout expertly through the asteroid field, seeming to know the open paths before she can see them. Of course, she flies with one eye on the viewscreen and the other in the slightly malfunctioning sensors. It isn't enough to deter her, however, and the runabout remains unscathed despite the constant and chaotic movement around you.

An alert sounds from the sensors as strange lights flash among the rocky debris of the asteroid field. Floating into view moments later is the darkened hull of a Starfleet runabout, virtually identical to the one you’re riding in but with a hull battered by an apparent asteroid collision.

The "Quantum Interference" Complication adds +1 to the Difficulty of any sensor scans inside the Pinicon Belt. The Complication also affects navigation, adding +1 Difficulty to Tasks related to flying through the asteroids

Devar notices the Doctor's unease, despite it being well disguised save for her subtle tail twitch. Sitting near her on the flight deck, he leans toward her hoping to say sometime to put her at ease.

A series of strange flashes of light, caused the hairs of his neck to rise - much like in his youth when he always seemed to sense when predators were about - even before the battered runabout drifted into view.

Correct Lieutenant. The report mentioned probes only," he intoned, holding the viewscreen under an intense gaze as he responded to Aurin's question. The Aurelian's fingers deftly danced across the LCARS as the science chief attempted to scan the derelict ship, Cole shifting his attention to Aurin, his brow rising questioning.

Using the runabout's sensors amounts to any assist. The runabout rolls one die (GG rolled it), and compares to its Sensors+Conn stat (7+2=9). Aurin-Ah's own rolls count as 3 successes (the 3 is a Crit) and the reroll on the sensor's die adds a fourth. For the first two successes, you learn:
Aurin-Ah allows the sensors to pierce the quantum interference long enough to scan the drifting ship, which bears the same name and registry number of the runabout that you are using! The only differences are that this new runabout has no one on board, and it resonates with a foreign quantum signature at the subatomic level, meaning it came from a different quantum reality.
OOC:
For the additional successes, you also learn the following:
A thorough sensor sweep or further exploration of the runabout reveals that it passed through a quantum fissure, which allowed it to shift from one quantum reality to another

Taking control of one of the viewscreens, Aurin-Ah magnified the view of the shuttle, proudly displaying the Christa McAuliffe's livery and registration, and its own name, the Raven.

Aurin's voice was level as he reported the facts. There would be a moment to get excited once all the relevant information was presented. "All readings indicate a Danube-class runabout. Markings, materials, and construction pattern are consistent with the Raven. No life signs aboard. Quantum signature is off local amplitude."

His bright, solid eyes focused on the console, and the others could see him manipuating the tight beam scanning on port side viewscreen, taking careful readings. "There's a differential charge on the exterior hull, with clear patterns of propagation." The claw of one thumb ran over the edge of his beak as the other hand scrolled through the readings. "I believe it physically passed through some kind of quantum fissure - it wasn't phased wholesale from some other quantum level to our own... but it is, as definitiely as we can tell, from another reality."

He paused a moment, before returning both hands to the console. "Running a secondary scan now, sir, to make sure it is stable..."

Aurin-Ah's analysis tells him that the quantum interference is too thick for usage of transporters, but there is no impediment to donning EV suits and floating over without any substantial risk of being smashed by asteroids.

"At once, sir" Luna acknowledge the order and brings the shuttle to a complete halt.

She keeps a calm appearance though the sight of the other shuttle had her startled. The Raven hit by an asteroid. Was she going to make a fatale mistake? Impossible. It must be some other ship.

"There don't appear to be any... active phenomena, locally." He pulled his hands away from the keys, taking the final readings. "I suspect we could tractor it over and board safely, although I wouldn't want to use the transporter outside an emergency. If we can bring it online, or even just power their computer bank, we might find more information."

He looked back down to the console at the Doctor's prompting, "I can run a wider scan for life signs." The the distinctive tapping of his talons against the LCARS console once again ran in current beneath the thrum and beep of the runabout's bridge.
Mar 23, 2024 12:47 am
Continues scans determine that there is no active phenomenon, such as a tear in the space-time continuum, that explains where the craft came from, only the unusual quantum signatures. Whatever happened to the other Raven, you won't learn anything from your runabout.

"Lt. Vilchis," he ordered, "Bring us in close. Ensign Zarah, prepare the tractor beam and reel it in."

Devar nods in agreement with Commander Walker's order. He grab's a tricorder and dials in some settings. Though he doesn't often use one, in this situation of quantum flux particularly, a clear read of the physiological responses of any they may encounter could be useful.

He paused a second and looked up, luminous eyes blinking at the roster of the EVA team. One crest above his eye curled, his beak opening a fraction and a finger raising, before he thought better of it. He hadn't been on a proper EVA since he was an ensign. He hoped he remembered his training. After a moment's delay, he acknowledged. "Aye, sir."

The aurelian ran a last scan of the other Runabout, to be sure that his readings had been correct. There was significant interference in the system - he could hope, perhaps, that something had been concealed on the return.

With that, he ceded the console, moving aft to don a pressure suit so they could transition to the other vessel.

"That's the idea Lieutenant," he said, stepping to the back of his pilot's chair to watch the process of maneuvering close and Ensign Zarah's targeting of the tractor beam. The rest of the team began gathering their equipment and EVA suits, earning a satisfied and appreciative nod from Cole.
Mar 25, 2024 3:14 am
With the transporters unable to establish a lock due to the quantum interference, nothing prevents a team from donning EV suits and floating over to the new shuttlecraft. They do so without issue, by establishing a magnetic grapple and gliding over, while those remaining on the "real" Raven watch for approaching asteroids.

Upon entering the "ghost" Raven, they find the runabout heavily damaged and abandoned, with minimal systems operational.

Calling up the craft’s logs requires a Control + Conn or Engineering Task with a Difficulty of 2. If anyone assists, they get to roll a single d20 and their successes would be added to them primary rollers.

Momentum: 2

Mar 25, 2024 3:09 pm
The transition through deep space was dizzying, the dramatic freedom from the confines of the ship's hull a little spoiled by the pressure suit. The Federation, despite their efforts, had never really come up with a satisfactory solution for an Aureilan space helmet. (Though, to be fair, neither had the Aurelians.) Their natural claustrophibia was a barrier and with their wide peripheral vision, a mostly glass structure was necessary. The swing of their beaks also neessitated a large amount of articulation in the neck, and a highly mobile "nose." Motion tracking servo assistance was in wide use in civilian suits, but was not considered up to failsafe standards for Starfleet.

The result was a rather undignified "pince nez" near the front of the helmet. The pinching sensation was minimal, but ever-present, and the two discs on either side of his beak looked, to use the scientific term, rather goofy.

And that didn't even get into the miracle of engineering that were pressurized articulated wings.

So it was unlikely that anyone was more displeased than he was to find the phantom runabout running on minimal power than he was. As they passed through the atmospheric screen, he gritted his beak, unwilling to trust the craft with his continued breathing without a closer inspection.

Trusting the rest of the crew for the moment with the console, he produced his tricorder, scanning for signs of the crew of the mystery ship, or signs of what they had been up to, seeing if he could safely make his way to the cargo compartment.
OOC:
Edit: Aurin's Control+Engineering is 12 (with Engineering 3), so he can provide a pretty solid assist, but isn't the best primary roller here unless we want to bank on his Role and Talents to pry more information out of the system.

If we've truly managed not to bring anyone competent around, he does have "Did the Reading" which will let him use Science in place of engineering, bringing us up to a 14 (5) at the cost of Momentum, but it seems a bit spendy so early in the scenario.

Zero gravity never really seemed to bother Cole, certainly not as some of those cadets in his graduating class, but he had always found it no less disconcerting than breaking a horse - or when his father and uncles weren't watching riding a bull. None the less, he was just as relieved when they safely traversed the space between the two ships.

The shuttle was, as it appeared on the viewscreen, heavily damaged, abandoned, with minimal systems operational. Lieutenant Aurin-Ah wasted little time producing his tricorder and began scanning the interior. Offering the Aurelian and appreciative nod of his helmeted head his gaze swept across the battered interior before settling on the rest of the Away Team, with a quick appraising glance he mentally took stock of his team's abilities and before stepping to the runabout's computer with a satisfied nod and began working on accessing the logs.
OOC:
I assume Cole would know who would be the obvious choice but I do not. I suspect it may be Aurin-Ah but ... Cole can only offer a (9) for Control + Conn (4) so probably not the best option for an assist. @Qralloq allowed Cole's Team Dynamics Focus and I will roll Cole as the primary.

Five successes, that's there for the bank as Momentum.
With exquisite expertise, Walker and Aurin-Ah get the badly damaged runabout to give them access to the logs.

You learn that the other Raven was manned by an away team identical to your away team but with subtle differences. You determine that the others originated from a different quantum reality. This runabout struck an asteroid in its native reality, and the away team attempted an emergency transport back to their starship, but the quantum interference scattered their signals beyond retrieval.

The occupants of the craft also learn that the craft itself is deteriorating. Sometime soon, the warp core will breach.

Mar 29, 2024 12:06 pm
Frowning slightly, brow furrowed as he contemplated the other away team's fate, a fate that very much could be their own, particularly with the deterioration of this Raven's warp core. Ensign Zarah's comments pushed through his grim thoughts, "Indeed. Prepare to disembark and head back to our Raven"

Faintly, Doctor M'Ress's concerned request for a SitRep, came across the comms. "Standby Doc --- we're heading back.

"Luna, this shuttle's warp core is about to blow so once we are back aboard we'll need a quick getaway. Who knows how all these temporal fields will react to an explosion ... not to mention the shockwave will send these rocks in all directions."
Mar 29, 2024 1:55 pm
Walker: just so your options are on the table, your options are to: 1) try and repair the warp breech (an extended task and difficult), 2) eject the warp core (Difficulty 2), or 3) as you have ordered, return to the other craft and fly far enough away (also Difficulty 2).

The hiss of atmosphere as he unsecured his helmet filled the bridge of the craft, as he peeled it away, setting it on the floor with an undignified thump as he approached the console he had configured for his use. He unsealed the gloves, tossing them aside, his talons tapping over the LCARS, trying to get a reading on the shuttle. He was uncharacteristically taciturn, focused on the readouts.

The core had been minutes from going critical. How could he have possibly missed it? Part of him wanted to blame the interference from the belt, but a pit in his gut told him it was a pitiful excuse.
Apr 1, 2024 11:51 am
The inertial dampeners struggled to compensate for Lieutenant Vilchis's heroics as the young pilot wasted little time in moving them away from the deteriorating shuttle, a grim set to Cole's jaw as he watched the mirror Raven explode in the viewscreen, a vivid example of their own potential fate. Luna's question tore him from his morbid thoughts, "Yes, Lieutenant. Take is in --- we still need those samples and readings."

Following Aurin's example, Cole too shed his environmental suit and with just as little fanfare, and watched the science officer busily work at the computer console. Thoughts Lieutenant?," he asked, stepping to the Aurelian's side.
Apr 2, 2024 12:47 am
"I..." Aurion paused, leaning back in his seat, pressing the tips of his fingers to his forehead, eyes closing tightly. "I am sorry, Sir. I don't know how I could have missed that. The sensors should have told me there was some issue with the core."

@qralloq - Would we be able to utilize 'Success at a Cost'? Assuming of course that @Stefron is okay accepting a complication?

Or not because a Momentum was spent on the roll?

Or does anyone else have any other thoughts to add?

SUCCESS AT COST
Some Tasks can’t really be failed outright; rather, there is
uncertainty as to whether the Task can be completed without
problems. In such a situation, the Gamemaster may allow
characters to Succeed at a Cost, either stating this before
the Task is attempted, or providing the option after the dice
have been rolled. If this option is provided, then a failed
Task still allows the Task to be successful but the character
also suffers one automatic Complication, in addition to any
caused by 20s being rolled. These Complications function
exactly as those generated by rolling a 20, including being
able to trade them for 2 points of Threat, or using them to
create other effects.

Though the Task has technically been successful, Momentum
cannot be spent to improve the outcome of a Task that
has succeeded at a cost: Momentum can only be spent
if the Task was truly successful. In some cases, the ‘cost’
can be increased further, at the Gamemaster’s discretion,
causing the character to suffer more than one automatic
Complication on a failed Task. This should be made clear
when the option to succeed at cost is presented.

Also, May Devar have noticed Vilchis succumbing to the overwhelming fast paced stress of the moment and step in to offer some words (which I could RP). In that case he could roll Command + Insight as an assist which would allow him to judge the mood and morale of the lieutenant and assuage her fears. This combined with Devar's Advisor Talent: "Whenever you assist another character using your Command Discipline, the character being assisted may re-roll one d20." would give Vilchis a re-roll????

I'll show Success at a Cost. @Stefron, choose whether to add two Threat or the next piloting check will have +1 Difficulty for a deteriorating mental situation as you fly into the thicker heart of the asteroids. In your post, describe how Luna is losing her nerve.

@Seck, Jayce can assist Luna on this complication. If you want to make a counseling check, you can attempt to remove Luna's stress. Difficulty 1 on that.

OOC:
Okay. I'll give it a shot.
Jayce senses potential stress mounting in Lieutenant Vilchis after being called on her expertise to get the craft safely back into the dangerous belt following the intensity of the emergency departure away from the previous explosion. He hopes to calm her so she may focus.

"Lieutenant...Luna." he looks earnestly, directly at her. "You promptly and safely got us into the belt, and just as promptly navigated us away from danger. I have confidence, as we all do, that you are quite able to navigate further in there and find a good spot for us to retrieve samples. There are no other hands at the conn that could make us safer than yours."

Excellent. Luna is distraught by the white knuckle flying but gets you there, and Jayce makes sure Luna's confidence isn't shot by the large number of near misses.

Cole gripped Aurin's shoulder, giving it a small comforting squeeze before slapping the science officer on the back with a confident pat, "Seems like you got everything out of the sensors you could just to confirm that what we were seeing was in fact a shuttle --- with all this interference it seems a wonder you got that.

"So good work."

He offered Ensign Zarah an appraising smile, pleased with the young man's initiative as he offered to run diagnostics. Eyes narrowing, brow furrowed his gaze shifted to his pilot, he usual confident response somewhat subdued, her movements less sure than typical. Perhaps sensing Luna's unease as well, Jayce moved to the adjacent seat, offering comforting words as he helped the young woman navigate her doubts even as she navigated the dangers of the shifting, rocking debris field.

Nodding a short, confident and approving nod of his head to Luna he then directed his attention to the rest of the team, "I don't know about y'all but I've had about enough fun for today. Let's get the samples we need and be on our way.

"Lieutenant Ah. What do you need us to do?

That asteroid nearly hit us and I hadn't seen it. Luna realize with a start as a large C-type asteroid passes inches from the Raven.
It wasn't the danger of the asteroid belt that threw her off balance, it was that she hadn't seen the danger. At all. Am I really a sloppy pilot? Totally unfit for the task? she wonders.

Then Lieutenant Devar starts talking to her. His word calms her some. "Thank you, Lieutenant." He is right anyone could have missed that rock.
Her focus and composure returns and she stays extra alert for small, dark C-type asteroids.

Did Seck's roll resolve the complication. If not, I'll take the two points of Threat.
Apr 4, 2024 2:43 am
OOC:
Yes, the complication was managed. No need for the Threat
Luna banks and plots her way through the chaotic mess. The asteroids tumble without the usual orderliness of an old belt. It's as if this one had been disturbed and still trying to find it's equilibrium.

Traveling into the heart of the Pinicon Belt puts the away team in position to collect the three asteroid samples required by Starfleet for in-depth research. However, the quantum interference continues to increase, and prevent the transporters from being of much use in extracting samples.

It's with some reputation that you realize one or more members of the away team will have to drill for the samples by hand. This is a three-step process that will require an officer to move into close proximity with an asteroid, identify a suitable chunk of rock with a tricorder, then extract the sample with a hand drill. The person attempting to do so will have to wear an EV suit, exit the shuttlecraft through an airlock and drift to the asteroid.

Slightly calmer, but hands still shaking, she sets up scans to be sure there isn't any volitile/dangerous materials

Drake felt bad for both the doctor and the pilot. Self-doubt was a mean master. He wouldn't trade places with them for a galaxy of planets. As it was, he was still trying to prove himself so it helped that the Commander seemed pleased with his actions so far. But now the crew would be at even greater risk if one of them was to leave the ship and be tethered among the tumbling asteroids.

"This is very dangerous, I have to point out the high risks we are subjecting ourselves to. A chaotic field of moving asteroids with no predictability at all?"

He doesn't voice his thoughts that it feels like madness.

"Dr. M'Reiss, what do you see in your scans? I am going run a predictability analysis. See if there is any kind of pattern to their movements. This might help give us a safer window in which to explore."
OOC:
Should I make some kind of roll for this?
Apr 4, 2024 11:17 pm
There is nothing to scan at the moment, or rather, the intense quantum interference has rendered scanning to be nearly useless. The samples will have to be obtained by spacewalk, by physically drilling into an asteroid, then carried back aboard. The scanners can be set up to work in the airlock, of course, so that anything objectionable can be kept separate from the biome of the runabout's interior.

The plan was never to use the transporters except in the last stages of the process. Aurin wanted to configure the mission pod to extract the samples mechanically, and use a craft with tractor beams specifically to avoid this situation
GreyGriffin says:
Apr 6, 2024 1:22 am
As the science officer prepares the drilling rig, the rest of you make your own preparations.

The interference will make remotely operating the rigs difficult, but infinitely safer. There are two steps:

1) identifying an appropriate sample (you need three) *;
2) extracting the sample. Robot lasers should handle this part easily.

The runabout has several computer interfaces. Multiple people can assist by helping stabilize the interference, analyzing the readings, and keeping the science people synthcaffeinated.

* Reason + Science Task with a Difficulty of 2 (+1 for the interference, -1 for the machine, so still 2).

The team gets to work, efficiently using the tractor beams, the sensors, and the mining rig to check asteroids for the densest concentrations of the quantum signatures, drill out a sample, then get them on board. It's tense work, with Luna moving the Raven twice in order to avoid oddly moving asteroids. After the doctor has scanned them with toxin and bio filters, they're brought on board.

They're nothing but unremarkable space debris, indistinguishable from rocks without the sensor readings.

A few minutes after you complete the extractions, alarms sound on both the runabout's sensors and on any tricorders being used. Investigating the alarm reveals that this entire section of the asteroid field now resonates with a new quantum signature, meaning the entire area has passed through a massive quantum fissure into a different quantum reality. The away team no longer exists in the universe from which you originated but have entered an alternate reality that could be different from your home universe in limitless ways.
Apr 9, 2024 2:40 pm
"Commander, I recommend shields be set to maximum. I'll scan for nearby ships."

While Drake may have kept his voice steady, he was feeling anything but calm.
Apr 10, 2024 11:49 am
Stolidly Cole observed the extraction of the ordered samples, pleased despite the lack of outward emotion, as he watched the team work. They managed to collect the samples quickly and efficiently, even with Luna having to maneuver the runabout out of the patch of wayward asteroids twice, and he was on the verge of offering a congratulatory comment when the piercing sounds of the alarm klaxons filled the Raven's interior. Jaw firmly set, eyes narrowed, and keeping his tone even, "Report."
Apr 10, 2024 1:05 pm
The doctor's hackles raised, and she managed to partially stifle an unhappy feline sound growing in the back of her throat, before she stood and moved closer to the monitors. Tell me theres a malfunction and we havent just changed realities...
Apr 10, 2024 6:05 pm
Drake looks up. It feels like his heart has jumped into his throat.

"Commander, I ..." The security officer stares into his screen as if he might see through to the other side of nothing. "There's nothing recognizable. We are in an alternate reality. Have we become the other ship?"
Apr 10, 2024 7:05 pm
"I have no idea what just happened." Luna replies "Let me just check the controls." She tries the ship's control to see if everything is working as it should. Then she proceeds to ping the Christa. Finally, looking at the navigation map to see the surroundings.
Apr 10, 2024 7:12 pm
Devar reminds himself to stay calm at the alarms and Ensign Drake’s explanation of the sensor readings. He takes a look at his own tricorder to recognize any changes or similarities to his crew members’ physiological state.
OOC:
@Qralloq Not sure if I should or what to roll operate the tricorder, but I will if you want
Apr 11, 2024 2:01 am
@Seck, no roll needed.

Jayce detects a rising alarm in each of the crewmembers, although they're not nearing an episode or breakdown. Given time, the stress may build but for now they're professionals.

Luna finds there is no response from the Christa McAuliffe, not even an automated carrier wave response of a connection being established. If it's in this reality, it's out of range.
Apr 11, 2024 2:24 pm
A sense of deep foreboding envelops Drake when they receive no response from the McAuliffe. Somehow, he knew there wouldn't be one. This had now become much more of an adventure than he had hoped.
Apr 11, 2024 6:27 pm
Cole, his mouth drawn in a tight line, eyes narrowed intensely, bit back the words of his youth that were unbecoming of a Starfleet officer as the team made their reports. While in no way a perfect galaxy, he was rather attached to it, flaws and all, and did not relish being stuck in another reality permanently. Turning to his science officer, doing his best to keep his frustration with the situation out of his tone, "Thoughts Lieutenant? Please tell me you caught something on the scans right before we shifted that we might be able to replicate?"
Apr 11, 2024 8:54 pm
"The Christa is not responding. It's like it is not there anymore." Luna reports. She looks at the cartography to see if they are still in the Pinicon Belt (either original or alternate version) or somewhere else entirely.

Augh, my post was eaten by my browser.
Aurin gripped the edges of his console as the readings spiked, eyes widening as they seemed to suddenly be awash in a strange energy field. He pulled in a breath, holding it, then looking around the cabin, scanning for a moment to see if anything had changed. But everything seemed to be in order.

"There was nothing... sharp enough to trigger the alerts, Commander. We were one place and then, suddenly, someplace else." He ran his thumb along the edge of his beak. "There is good news... Planck constants seem to be within survivable parameters. No major damage. And, well, I'd have the doctor double check, but it appears we aren't melting into goo. I think if our fundamental chemistry was altered, we would probably notice pretty quickly."

He ducked his head back down, running the scans again, seeing if their quantum signature matched any known values, such as the shuttle they had seen previously. "If there's any pattern I can detect, it may just be a matter of sitting tight and waiting to head back."
Apr 11, 2024 10:06 pm
Drake looks up from his scanner, his face a little pale.

"Luna, the Christa is likely in another dimension. At least the ship as we know it. My scans are showing up nothing but odd readings that don't make sense. Interference is making it impossible to identify. We might find another version of the Christa as we did with the Raven. "

Without warning, a hand phaser blast erupts from a nearby asteroid and narrowly misses the Raven. It’s too dark to see who fired the shot, but you suspect the attacker is taking cover in the asteroid field. Roughly fifty meters of empty space separates you from the attacker’s asteroid.
Apr 12, 2024 7:02 pm
Despite the gravity of their situation Cole was pleased that his officers were keeping their heads, forcing a smile he replied to Aurin's assessment of the quantum realty they had found themselves in, "Well, there is that." Whatever follow up quip that may have been on his tongue was cut short by phaser fire from the asteroid field.

"RED ALERT," Cole bellowed, stepping to peer over his security officer's shoulder, "Was that a hand phaser?."

Brow furrowing in some sort of incredulous confusion he added, "And find me where and who that came from."

Cole quietly observed as the crew took the initiative, attempting to make contact with whomever was firing at them as Aurin ran the signature analysis on the phaser's that had fired at them frequency. His eyes narrowed slightly at the results, not unsurprised, and not particularly eager to meet his doppelganger but unwilling as a Starfleet officer to abandon someone in need.

"Luna. Continue to signal using the floodlight," he directed, "Lieutenant Ah. You and Ensign Zarah find me a comm frequency we can open a channel to this individual as I agree - the phaser shot seemed more a signal than threat.

"Doc. If he's been out there any length of time ..."

He left the obvious unsaid, confident Doctor M'Ress would be ready to tackle whatever conditions and issues the individual might have, "You too Counselor, if this person is anything like me his demeanor is bound to be a bit ... prickly."
Apr 18, 2024 1:58 pm
Yes of course. Hopefully he hasn't been marooned for too long. Likely less than a week with not food, water, limited oxygen supply.
She rises and starts setting up a makeshift ER in the rear of thr shuttle with the medical supplies she thankfully insisted on bringing. She sets up an IV drip with fluids but doesn't puncture the bag. Better to be prepared
Apr 18, 2024 3:28 pm
"Yes Commander." Drake scans available comm frequencies, looking for a channel that will allow a message to be sent, presuming there is someone alive to send the message to.
Apr 18, 2024 6:05 pm
You strike luck, finding the others outside on a wartime covert Star Fleet frequency.

Cole's voice comes over the comms. "This is Captain Cole Walker of Star Fleet. Identify yourself or be destroyed."

Your instruments pick up a power signature, a nearby ship powering up to full, and shields coming online. It's hard to get a reading as it appears to be behind an asteroid and the quantum interference makes everything more uncertain.
Apr 18, 2024 6:57 pm
Cole, his face pensive as he heard his own voice issuing orders as the Raven's instruments detected a nearby ship powering up. "Open channel," he barked, "This is Commander Cole Walker, also of Starfleet."

Meeting the other's gazes he shrugged, unsure of what more he could add, as they waited for his counterpart to reply.
Apr 18, 2024 8:57 pm
The man on the comm screen is a spitting image of you, however, his uniform is slightly different, he wears captain's pips, and the his left eye is cybernetic, a faint scar line bisecting the orbital socket.

"Commander Walker, this is a strange coincidence, and one I don't trust. I'd expected you were borg spies but my science officer tells me you're from another quantum reality. I suggest we meet. We've got no reason to fight each other, but we'll not hesitate to defend ourselves."
Apr 18, 2024 9:19 pm
Luna stops flashing the floodlight and looks in surprise and confusion from one Cole Walker to the other Cole Walker and back again.
Apr 18, 2024 9:56 pm
Drake isn't altogether surprised. After all he had mentioned the possibility of a doppelganger when they first came across the other shuttle. Still, it was unnerving to see another Commander Walker on the screen, albeit with a few differences.

He waited enthusiastically for the other commander to engage, despite being a little apprehensive.
Apr 19, 2024 1:26 am
Find out if any of them need medical attention. she waves a tricorder. So I can stop setting up the med bay if it isnt necessary
Apr 19, 2024 3:46 am
Jayce--who had been helping Doctor M'Ress prepare the Raven, as Commander Walker ordered, to provide medical and psychological care to a stranded Starfleet officer from another quantum reality--now wonders which officer he will need to provide support, the scarred cyborg looking Walker from another reality or his own Walker.

Cole suppresses a small smile as a near spitting image of his self fills the screen albeit with a few alterations - the cybernetic eye leaving him wondering if all Cole Walkers were destined to be fighters instead of lovers. His eyes narrowed slightly in thought at the other Cole's explanation, finding it curious that the concern was over the Borg and not the Dominion.

"Agreed," he intoned and sharing his counterparts lack of trust, "In the meantime, my Medical Chief has inquired about anyone needing medical attention. She is here and available should you require it."

Captain Cole's comments and general cageyness gave Cole pause, leaving him unwanting and even perhaps unwilling to land the Raven on his alternate's ship, but doubtful the Captain would agree to meet aboard the Runabout. "What did you have in mind as a location for this meetup, Captain?" he queried, keeping his tone polite and professional.
Apr 19, 2024 8:30 pm
While the sensors had proved unreliable so far, Aurin did his best to get readings. Both on the communications channel, to pinpoint the location of the alternate Cole, but also to see if he could discern anything about the ship that had appeared on the scope. With so much interference, he put his head close to the console, trying to read the inputs almost by intuition rather than computer analysis, a skill honed by many tense months along the neutral zone, trying to penetrate cloaking devices.
Apr 19, 2024 9:12 pm
"What if we lowered the shields temporarily? They might be affecting the sensors with all the quantum interference. I know it's a risk but it would only be long enough to rerun our scans."

Not the safest plan Drake admitted to himself, and uncharacteristic of the ensign, however he felt the small risk was warranted in this case.
Apr 20, 2024 1:25 pm
Aurin-Ah with Drake's assistance finds the runabout, coming out from behind an asteroid. Yet another Raven, although this one appears different, the profile slightly altered like it's rigged for war rather than exploration.

Captain Walker frowns grimly. "No medical attention is necessary. If you have the room, we'll come aboard. Helmsman, make for the Raven, bring us alongside within twenty meters."

The ship slides toward you, taking a slightly rounded trajectory to avoid a rotating boloid. It comes to relativistic rest beside you.
Apr 20, 2024 8:20 pm
Luna helps align the real Raven with the other Raven for their parallel bearings.
"Sir, they are rigged for war" she whispers as she notices the subtle differences.
Apr 20, 2024 11:00 pm
Devar says quietly to Commander Walker as not to be heard over the communication channel, "Lieutenant Vilchis makes no small point Sir. I agree we should be careful. The people on that runabout may share some of our characteristics, but their life experience is entirely different and has shaped them into different people. I advise we proceed with caution."

And if we're in their reality, who knows what danger lurks
Thought we were done with the Borg. Not looking forward to that again
Apr 22, 2024 2:09 pm
Cole scratched at his well trimmed beard in thought, observing the proceedings with narrowed, pensive eyes and taking his colleagues cautions under advisement as he pondered whether or not to arm themselves, cognizant of his two medical experts' warnings and the potential danger of having their alternate selves on board if they were indeed on war footing with more aggressive ideals. With a deep, frustrated sigh he decided on practicing the - their - Federation's more peaceful stance, opting to forgo having them all armed.

"Doc, perhaps it would be best for you to stand out of the way --- in the event things go South.

"Ensign, I don't think there will be many objections if you go armed --- however I don't want to provoke any aggressive actions by having the rest of us so --- and you and Jayce stay close. Jayce, stay sharp and observant, let me know if they start projecting overly agitated emotions.

"Luna, perhaps you could keep a phaser within reach --- I don't think also there won't be too many objections if you remain at the helm.

"Aurin. Keep working on a way to get us back home."

His gaze swept over the Team, satisfied they were ready with a short nod, "I suppose then we should lower shields and invite them to beam aboard."
OOC:
Again ... giving orders only in the context of roleplaying Cole as the XO. Should anyone have any better ideas or other actions they want their characters to take please proceed. My intent is not to railroad or be bossy ... merely playing the role :-)
Apr 22, 2024 7:53 pm
Luna had already moved her phaser to a easy-to-reach spot near the console before the commander told her to do so.
She agreed with the peaceful but prepared course of action the XO had chosen.
Apr 22, 2024 10:58 pm
Drake responded, perhaps too enthusiastically. "Yes, Commander! You can count on me." He hoped his excitement didn't show too much on his face. Sure, he was a little tense, but this was an amazing opportunity.
Apr 24, 2024 3:47 pm
"I don't think I'd advise beaming anything in these conditions, Commander. But I'm sure we could set up a pressurized docking field."

The transporter was at the top of his mind, and he ducked back down to his console. LCARs did itself many favors, but he longed for his laboratory and its vast displays and access to a full starship's instruments.

He pulled up logs of the static and interference, scanning for any patterns that might indicate a shift in quantum frequency, an indicator that they had slid from one universe to another, to a full log of the ship's diagnostic activity, seeing if anything they had done might have triggered it. The incomplete diagnostics they had been able to pull from the derelict Raven clone might corroborate his hypothesis and his hope.

If the ship wasn't responsible, after all, it would be quite difficult to induce the anomaly to act the way they needed it to.
Apr 24, 2024 6:03 pm
"Point well taken Lieutenant," replied to the Science Officer inwardly chastising his self for his mental lapse regarding the transporters, "Luna. Hold her steady and invite the other Raven to dock with us."
Apr 24, 2024 9:11 pm
Luna holds her steady.
"Raven crew, standby for docking." she says in the comm. Then she commences the docking procedure. She made sure to do everything by the book but couldn't help wonder if their "book" was the same.
Once the necessary steps is taken, "Raven crew, you are clear to enter."
Apr 24, 2024 9:48 pm
Drake sticks with Jayce and subtly pats his phaser, a gesture that reassures the ensign that he ready.
Apr 25, 2024 3:39 am
Unwilling to risk the transporters in the intense interference, the crew floats the intervening distance in environment suits and boards your ship through the airlock. You now that they're armed with a phasers, and their suits are armored. After their Dr. M'Ress scans the air inside for pathogens, and you've scanned them, they remove their helmets.

"Captain Cole Walker. This is lieutenant D'Ress, Ensign Zarah, and Second Lieutenant Vilchis."

The four of you state at your doppelgangers. The strangers are like you but scarred and war savaged. The distance in their eyes tells you they've seen and lived with more horror than you might imagine.
Apr 25, 2024 9:13 am
OOC:
So M'Ress doesn't seem to different then? :) her generated events involved survival in a battle and a hostile culture, though thus Doctor must have been through worse
She watches her copy with narrow eyes, the tip of her tail flicking. She visually scans the alternate team for fresh injuries, but hopes they are as competent.

Tell me, were you pulled into another reality as well, or are we in yours?
Apr 25, 2024 3:17 pm
Drake tries not to look agog, but it takes great effort not to. Surely the crew are as much a surprise to their guests as the guests are to them.

His mind burns to hear an answer to the doctor's question as his eyes subtly watch their guests.
Apr 25, 2024 3:25 pm
Cole cast their counterparts in an appraising stare through narrowed eyes, noticing all were armed with phasers and scarred with the wear and tear of war. Taking the initiative the Doc posed a valid question to the foursome, and as he waited on their response his eyes flicked towards Jayce, a brow rising in question as he looked for some confirmation as to their opposite's emotional state and temperment.
Apr 25, 2024 8:40 pm
The other doctor puts away her tricorder. "We don't see here the massive borg presence in the Alpha quadrant that is common place in our universe. There, you could sense their subspace communication frequencies everywhere, but here they're silent. Either you have no borg or you defeated that threat. In our ... dimension? In our reality, they control most of known space."
Apr 25, 2024 8:42 pm
The captain grinds his teeth. "Yes, we were caught in a rift and pulled here, while we investigated this asteroid belt for a weapons cache. This isn't your reality, either, and I'm sure all of us want to get home."

He's suspicious, and Jayce gets the sense that he's trying to determine whether or not you're borg spies or informants.
Apr 26, 2024 3:28 am
OOC:
I hope I do not speak incorrectly about our characters' timeline and interactions with the Borg..
"The Borg are still at large and remain a formidable threat in our reality Doctor," replies Jayce to the guest M'Ress. (He inwardly admits that is is very odd to be addressing another Doctor M'Ress). "Captain, I sense your worry, although we have been fortunate to not currently be engaged in a full out war with the Collective in our reality, we neither have any truces with the force, nor could we imagine one existing."

Jayce senses that the Captain Cole is honestly suspicious about the motives of Jayce's own crew, and does not sense any level of deception from him thus far.

"We do want to get home. We are all needed in our own realities. I'm sure your crew is needed crucially. Perhaps we could work together to figure out what anomalies got us here and how to reverse them to get back."

They agree to work together and in a somewhat natural way, they approach each of you. Curious about the differences. They're still suspicious but the temptation to compare to a history that might have been is too much.

The other Drake removes his upper part of the suit and shows a mechanical right arm, up to mid bicep. "You've got your whole arm. I lost mine in a Borg attack on Risa."
Apr 26, 2024 2:45 pm
The other Luna stands awkwardly near Luna. "I wonder where our timelines diverged. I used to be the helmsman, too, but was promoted in the field a few weeks ago. The borg have been around longer than that though."

Qralloq says:

Drake's eyebrows raise as the other Drake shows off his mechanical arm.

"That's an impressive piece of hardware. I'm sorry to hear about you losing your arm but it looks like you got something better for your trouble."

The other Drake's openness was encouraging.
Apr 26, 2024 8:00 pm
Cole forced a polite smile as Jayce attempted to belay Captain Cole's suspicions as the two crews settled in to figure out how to return them to their perspective realities, his mouth drawing taut at the mention their counterparts were from a different reality than they one they were currently in. As introductions continued, Cole motioned the other Cole over towards Lieutenant Ah.

"This is my science officer, Lieutenant Aurin-Ah," he stated simply with a gesture towards the Aurelian, "You've been pecking away over here Lieutenant --- any solutions present themselves yet?"
Apr 27, 2024 2:17 am
Aurin was absorbed in his work. Not for lack of interest in their visitors, but his crew was counting on him, and there were... many, many variables to examine. One finger grazed over his greenish crest, as he turned away from the console.

"I wish we were meeting under less... unpredictable circumstances. But we welcome your assistance." It was strange, seeing these doppelgangers roaming the bridge, but it was some comfort he didn't have to confront himself, not yet. He had quite a lot on his mind already.

He motioned to the screen. The commander could use a briefing, one he could distill to the crew, if need be. And the other commander... could probably use a gesture of goodwill. But he didn't speak privately, letting the others perk up if they found an interest in his predicament. "The sensors on the Raven are... woefully insufficient to penetrate the interference around this belt. I haven't been able to isolate a source, but it is quite a lot of background noise." He motioned to three abstract waveform graphs, two representing the output and operation of a ship's systems, the other a log of the interference that seemed to be bombarding their sensors. "We're ill-equipped to examine the theoretical, so I'm focusing on the practical. I've got our engineering logs, here, and what we could piece together of the wreck's logs, against the pattern of the interference, here. Trying to see if it's been... agitated by our behavior at all. Engines. Reactor. Transporter. Weapons. Tractor. Life support." He motioned to different colored lines that carved through the overarching waveform of reactor output.

The claw on the tip of his thumb glided down the edge of his beak. "If we can isolate any system we have control of that alters its behavior, we may be able to induce it to act. Or, at the very least, we may be able to use the interference itself as a sensory medium able to carry signals from whatever is the cause of the anomaly - a sort of quantum sonar. If the Raven's computer is up to it, anyways." He shook his head. "I'd give my left wing for the main arrays on the Christa right now."
Apr 28, 2024 7:09 pm
He doesn't look directly at Aurin-Ah but doesn't ignore the Aurelian either.

"There may be a way to recalibrate your sensors to filter out the Pinicon Belt’s quantum interference. Commander, we'll share the upgrade with your team if you agree to cooperate in assisting us, and in doing so yourselves. We believe that the source of the interference is deeper in the belt, and I'd like for you to accompany us."

His expression tells you that he's hopeful you'll join him, despite his somewhat strong arm tactics in obtaining that help.
Apr 28, 2024 7:58 pm
Drake's eyes widen with hopeful excitement at the prospect of an adventure, and with their opposites. He almost says something but decides to bite his tongue as that would be totally out of line. Maybe he'd be excused for exuberant youth but there was also the safety of the crew to consider.
Apr 29, 2024 1:32 pm
Cole's eyes narrowed slightly, a hint of furrow to his brow and tautness to his jaw at the other Cole's almost slight of his science officer, the creases deepening and jaw tightening further at the near intimidation tactics in soliciting their help. Instantly suspicious of his counterparts motives, his eyes flicked towards Jayce, widening slightly in question with a nod towards the Captain and looking for his Counselor's insights, hoping if their were any deception that Jayce would pick up on it.
Apr 29, 2024 6:37 pm
@Seck, If Jayce would like to attempt to read the Captain, you'll have to touch him, but in the tight confines of the ship, that's easy enough to explain.
Apr 29, 2024 8:53 pm
Aurin curled the claws of his thumb and forefinger together, catching a sudden increase in the tension of the room. The Commanders seemed reluctant to trust one another, at least. He glanced around at the rest of the doppelganger crew, wondering what struggle would tighten their belts in a situation like this. He had a few thousand questions, but bit his tongue to keep them to himself for the moment. Now wasn't the time to drill for information - and he feared the other Cole might interpret his curiosity as an attempt to gather intelligence.

Jayce moves a step closer to the Captain Walker. "Captain, Is there a Halian named Jayce Devar among your crew? If there is, you would know that Halians can sense the emotions of others upon touch. I hope to sense your confidence in our two teams' collaboration. If you would permit me to rest my hand on your shoulder...perhaps your Devar can return this gesture." He says with a warm smile.

He looks at Jayce and wants to say no, but acquiesces, and offers his hands. "We had a, well, a version of you I suppose. He died, not long ago. I hope, although I fear he was assimilated."

He waits a moment and closes his eyes. "Our Aurelian was assimilated, and then last time I saw Aurin, he pointed a disruptor at me. "
May 4, 2024 5:15 am
Jayce fights a involuntary shiver at the thought of being assimilated.

"That harsh reality is less than comforting; thank you for sharing Captain. I wonder how parallel our realities run, and what parallel fate Lieutenant Ah and I could suffer in our own." replies Jayce as he takes the Captain’s hands in his.

He then clears his mind and begins to let go of his own thoughts, creating a space for the flow of emotion.
May 4, 2024 2:00 pm

The notion of a star fleet officer turning on other star fleet officers is unsettling to Luna to say the least. What happened to their version of Jayce? Why did he threaten the crew with a phaser? and even more unsettling, What if it was him that turned but instead the only one loyal?

As Captain Cole's emotions of stress fill Jayce's mind, he also feels the captain's hopefulness toward the alliance of the two crews. There is something else though. Jayce, cannot pinpoint the exact emotion behind it, but the Captain is holding something back, something important.

Jayce breaks his mind away from the Captian and releases his hands. His own emotions, senses, and thoughts return to his mind's surface.

"Persistent war and being responsible for the lives of your crew as well as the security of Starfleet itself is a heavy perpetual burden Captain. You carry it well. I sense your hopefulness that we can help each other, but to what purpose? I feel a reluctancy within you." calmly states Jayce to Captain Cole.

Jayce gives his own Walker a silent look that is meant to convey, there is more.

The captain frowns. "It's difficult to trust. Information given and then assimilated is used against us. But I'll trust this once more. We believe the asteroid belt’s strange quantum properties resulted from the technology of an ancient race of Sculptors who could shape reality to their will. Starfleet believes some of that technology remains intact at the heart of the Pinicon Belt, and we hope to harness that power to rid our reality of the Borg threat – and maybe even erase the Borg from all quantum realities."
May 8, 2024 9:17 am
M'Ress frowns. Erase the Borg? was that even possible?
"How far did you make it before you were stranded? Do you...how many other copies of US are in here...?
May 8, 2024 6:05 pm
The alternate Cole's frown was quickly mirrored by Cole, the Starfleet officer in him concerned by the prospect of eliminating an entire race - hostile or otherwise - while the tactician in him appreciated the boldness of the plan. Ancient alien technology was certainly within their mission parameters and not something that should be left for whom, or what, ever to find. Saying as much, he met his counterpart's expectant gaze and nodded, agreeing to accompany them deeper into the asteroid field.

"So if you can coordinate the sensor recalibration and upgrade with Lieutenant Ah we can be underway ... I assume your shuttle will take the lead and we'll follow?"
May 8, 2024 9:07 pm
Sculptors in the heart of the belt!

Drake had heard of these ancients and the idea of potentially uncovering the secrets to that power was mind blowing.

These were his thoughts as he listened intently to the back and forth between his crew and their counterparts. He was ever ready to reach for his phaser though, as he would never trust these alternates and noticed Luna eyeing her phaser and probably thinking the same. He tried to catch her eye and nod, trying to convey that he felt as she did.

It felt like his heart skipped a beat as they discussed getting underway.

The doppelgangers, for lack of a better term, guide you in the recalibration of your sensors. Combining the arrays of the two ships gives you a wider field of view.

A Reason + Science Task, assisted by the shuttlecraft’s Sensors + Conn, with a Difficulty of 1 (I won't make you roll that), now shows that the highest concentration of quantum interference masked the presence of a large station at the center of the asteroid field. Only minimal power signatures emanate from the structure, but there can be no mistake that there is a large artificial structure at the heart of the Pinicon Belt.
May 9, 2024 9:03 pm
Luna returns Drake's gaze with a quick sidelook. Good to know he was alert too.
Then the structure appears on the sensor
"So we are going to that thing?" she asks and turns to the alternate Luna "Are you up for flying your ship through the field? Then I'll follow. That seems to be the plan." being behind the other ship did give a tactical advantage if this was any kind of trap.
May 9, 2024 9:06 pm
Aurin was significantly more morose than Drake at the prospect of putting his hands on ancient technology. He ran one web-scarred hand along the edge of his beak, thinking of the rogue archaeology along the neutral zone, and all its disastrous consequences.

But if there was such a station at the heart of the belt, it may be their only option to affect this anomaly. While the Danube was an impressive stripe of shuttlecraft, he couldn't imagine trying to mount a comprehensive study from one. He would have to practically reinvent the wheel.

So he took a careful reading, sending the information to the conn, with a suggested rough course that would get them closer.

In the meantime, he took careful readings with their new, broadened perspective, looking for patterns in the interference, to see if he could tell anything about its nature - if it was some feedback from the environment, some consequence of a mechanism aboard the station, or even active sensor jamming to prevent them from finding it. After all, if the station did not want to be found, it may try to defend itself...

Once their guests had returned to their own ship, the understanding that they would follow their mirror selves deeper into the asteroid field to the newly discovered structure at it's center, Cole joined Aurin at the console that had become the science officer's station. Gazing at the data through narrowed, discerning eyes as he stroked his heavily bearded jaw deep in thought.

"Learn what you can about this alien structure," he intoned, finally snapping out of his reverie, "In particularly how it might be used to get us home --- then how it can be destroyed."

Holding up a hand in caution, before any protests could be made, "Or in the very least rendered inert.

"Despite the looming threat the Borg present in our reality --- and certainly the toll it's taken on our counterparts --- I don't see how we can allow the destruction of an entire society.

"Not to mention the fact that their are probably more, even dangerous, threats in our own reality that the Borg keep in check. Better the enemy you know ..."

After what seems like hours of tense piloting through the asteroids, the runabout winds its way through huge chunks of debris into the very center of the Pinicon Belt. Looming beyond the asteroids, the battered hulk of an ancient space station hovers into view. The structure appears to be composed of three spherical modules connected by a central axis. The station may have had more sections long ago, but they appear to have been destroyed in asteroid collisions over the centuries.

"Indeed it is," Drake agrees, staring in wonder at the relic. Heaving a sigh of relief, glad their ship successfully navigated through the asteroid field while remaining intact, he gazes in fascination at the spheres that remain attached to the old station.

"Shall we send a team, Commander?"
May 13, 2024 7:26 pm
Stoically Cole had sat, limiting how he could the distractions as Luna expertly guided them through the thickest of debris. The hour or so had felt more like days and as the pilot slowed the craft and finally stopped, he rose stretching to relieve some of the tension that had built up and gripped Luna's shoulder.

"Well done Lieutenant," he stated with an appreciative nod to the young pilot as he too took in the impressive sight of the ancient station.

"What can you tell me Aurin," he asked the science officer, "And Luna, I suppose we should open a channel and coordinate things with our counterparts."

"Right away, sir" Luna says as she sets up a communication channel to the other ship.

Scanning the station’s interior with sensors requires a Reason + Sciences Task with a Difficulty of 1.
May 16, 2024 3:43 am
"It's a long shot, to be sure, but if the station went dark unexpectedly, there may be some survivors in stasis."

As the veil of the interference cleared from the sensors, Aurin turned them on their destination, trying to see if it was safe for life aboard, and if there was a functional docking bay, or if they would need to... improvise ingress. Once through scanning for structural details and any power sources they could lock onto, he ran a thorough scan for life signs. He didn't fancy catching some millenia-old dormant infection.

@GreyGriffin - Would Aurin have a Focus that might apply? Maybe get some extra Momentum with that rolled 2
May 16, 2024 5:47 pm
OOC:
Aurin has a specialty in Sensor Operations, and also one in Anthropology, if that might make sense of the interior design.
May 23, 2024 12:41 am
The scans reveal that the interior of the station is a vacuum with no artificial gravity and no life signs. No defensive shields prevent an away team from beaming aboard the station. Indeed, there is no power at the moment. However, much of the technology aboard the station remains surprisingly intact, despite having been exposed to the vacuum of space. Restoring power might be possible.
OOC:
Spent one of the extra successes to give additional information, included above. One Momentum banked.
The alternate Walker says, "Commander, I recommend you send a team over. We will as well. We leave it to your choice of whether you want to explore together, or divide the station up and explore separately."
May 24, 2024 11:49 am
Scratching at his stubble in thought, Cole listened as his team relayed the information provided by the scans, eyes narrowing as he considered what the results meant. His counterpart on the mirror Raven voiced his opinion, giving the decision of their next steps to him.

"Aurin," he stated eventually, "Is there any indication of a shuttle or landing bay? Or perhaps docking ring?"

His eyes met those of the rest of his team, "I don't know about you, but I don't fancy a spacewalk if we don't have too. Not if there is a risk I might step through some quantum anomaly and end up in some other reality."

Nodding to Luna to open comms, "Standby Raven, we are seeing if there is a landing bay or docking ring ..."

"That would be an unwise safety risk. Let's hope there is a dock or pad."

Drake realized he was stating the obvious, but he often felt like he wasn't contributing as he should. His inexperience held him back, not wanting to make a fool of himself. Now he was excited and hoped they could safely board the other vessel.
May 24, 2024 8:38 pm
I don't think the quantum issues are as drastic here. It is like the eye of a hurricane. a sea of calm with violence and storms around it
She stares out at the monitor.
I also wouldn't fancy a space walk...but we will need our suits regardless...even if we get systems online, they may not support our kind of life

"Whether or not we need suits in there, it will be quite amazing to witness this ancient alien technology. If it weren't top priority to get home, I would look forward to examining what the arrangement of the station reveals about the cognitive process of the sapient species who built it," replies Jayce still with a fascinated look on his face.

Drake certainly echoes Jayce's sentiments. Surely, they'd have a bit of time to do some observation and analysis.

"Barring any unforeseen circumstances I imagine we might observe and learn what we can. It would be too great an opportunity to pass up.
May 26, 2024 4:08 am
"We should be able to beam aboard, with the interference compensation. I would run a test, to be sure, first, but it would be safer than trying to cut our way in. A docking bay with no tractors, no shields, no airlocks, would be no better than trying to carve our way in through the bulkhead. Worse, as it's designed to resist catastrophe - or intrusion."

His talons drummed on the console. "We can send a tricorder aboard, to report the conditions, and make sure it isn't disintegrated. Then I will beam aboard myself. I presume my expertise will be necessary. The away team can follow."

His hand lifted and he glanced back at the sensor readings, following the other Raven as it examined the station. His brow furrowed at some unspoken anxiety, but he dismissed it. The last thing they could afford in this moment was distrust.
May 27, 2024 5:04 pm
You're able to determine that there are no radiation hazards or so forth. There is no shield preventing transporters, and no obvious docking bay. You can transport aboard, or float there using EV Suits.

All scenes set aboard the space station feature two Traits, which remain true through the rest of the adventure unless the Player Characters take action to change them. The first Trait is "Vacuum." There is no breathable atmosphere inside the station, necessitating the use of EV suits to survive for any length of time inside the station. The second Trait is "Zero Gravity." The artificial gravity on the station failed long ago, meaning any characters who beam aboard will have to use gravity boots to stay planted on the deck. Alternatively, characters may choose to simply float through the station’s zero-g environment, though this may prove challenging in some situations.
May 27, 2024 5:13 pm
Boots and suit on, Dr. M'Ress stands near the transporters and shakes her head. She'd prefer to stay aboard the shuttle, but fears injuries may need to be treated in a hurry. She grabs her portable kit, and waits
May 27, 2024 5:48 pm
Drake tempers his enthusiasm and dons his suit and boots taking a place next to M'Ress. "This should be ..." he was about to say fun but thought better of it. "Interesting. It will be interesting."
May 27, 2024 5:55 pm
"Yes, interesting to say the least Drake." agrees Jayce.

He dons his suit as well. Not eager to have to be in the suit, but eager to explore the station.

Aurin greeted the others as they approached the Danube's modest transporter, trying to remain cheerful despite being stuffed back into the pressure suit. He stood at the controls, double checking his readings and their coordinates, as well as the interference calculations.

"If I may, Commander," Aurin spoke as the team was combobulating, "I believe we should prioritize engineering components. As excited as I am to examine all the equipment at our disposal here, all things flow from power, and we should know how much we have. And... whether it's set to blow." He glanced towards his tricorder, recalling the destruction of the other shuttle.

He fastened his gloves back into place, then buttoned his helmet with a few twists. "Ready to energize on your command, sir."
May 28, 2024 3:15 pm
Set to blow?

Drake should have thought of that possibility and the thought of it was anything but reassuring as they prepared to transport from the safety of their ship into the unknown of the other.
May 29, 2024 11:53 am
Cole carefully weighed the options, gazing through narrowed eyes at the sensor readings as he considered the crew's words. Mistrustful of their counterparts motives he would have preferred to have 'all hands on deck' but with the instability of the asteroid field he did not trust leaving the Raven without her pilot. With a sigh, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose he finally concluded, "Luna, coordinate our beam in point with our allies as I'd prefer to tackle the repairs and survey of the station as a single unit."

He forced a smile meeting his pilot's eyes, "Despite their best efforts I don't necessarily trust that they'll be in a sharing mood should they find something on the station.

"Also be prepared to beam us out at a moment's notice and doubly prepared to fire on the station at my command. I'm assuming the very real possibility that we find something that our counterparts can use in their war with the Borg to devastating effect and their might be a 'disagreement' upon how to best utilize it."

His voice trailed off, once more considering instead bringing the pilot along to have more numbers ...
OOC:
Would like to bring Luna along A)because I'm reluctant to sideline a PC while the rest of us get to participate in the action and B) for Cole's stated concerns over having numbers. So @GM if the asteroids are not particularly active in the area and the ship would be safe on autopilot then I would prefer to have Luna along or if there is another justification that Cole may know that I would not ...

Also my apologies for the delayed response ... busy weekend with the holiday
May 29, 2024 9:39 pm
"I would prefer to go with the away team, I'm trained in extra vehicular operations. The station will shield the Raven from asteroids." Luna argues.
OOC:
I would prefer not to stay behind unless necessary
May 31, 2024 12:17 am
OOC:
Absolutely. Snuggling the Raven up against the stations belly will protect it from the asteroids.
May 31, 2024 2:56 am
"If my readings are correct, I can provide a landing site near a point of egress where we can anchor the Raven. I think this may be an exterior maintenance hatch. Or at the very least, a piece of hull we can cut through with hand phasers in a pinch." He motioned to a site on the station's exterior.

"I'm sure we can use all hands onboard... getting it up and running is probably work for more than twice our crew. And..." He glanced a little off to the side, almost ashamed it came to mind, "...being belly-up against the station will make an attack both very broadcast by the positioning of the.... attacker, and risky, if... an attacker wanted to take the station intact."
May 31, 2024 11:48 am
Cole nodded, smiling appreciatively at the science officer's cautious stance towards their allies. "Luna. Take is in," he said, his finger tapping the screen on the site identified by Aurin, "Cutting through the hull shouldn't be necessary --- not with the modifications our friends provided to the sensors and transporters.
May 31, 2024 8:57 pm
"At once" Luna steers the Raven to the designated spot for anchorage.
Jun 2, 2024 2:47 pm
You transport aboard the station, knowing that if you're going to use the alien technology you'll likely need to see about getting power working. But accessing the database and finding out what they did is also a key. The away team materializes in a corridor between the archives and the power facility.

The other away team (of four) materializes near you, tricorders out and scanning. They're going to focus on the Sculptor (their name for the aliens) dimensional apparatus, leaving you the database and power tasks.
OOC:
Which do you do first?
Jun 2, 2024 3:26 pm
Upon materializing on the station, Jayce cannot help but to immediately look around to assess similarities and differences in the station's structure and layout to the member races of Starfleet. He looks for symbols and writing around to determine if these aliens employ recognizable patterns of communication. Glancing at the activities of the other crew, Jayce is also interested in how familiar they seem with the same elements he is trying to assess.
OOC:
Jayce will wait for orders regarding what to do next, but would personally be more inclined to work on the database with others.

As the bright interior of the Raven was near instantaneously replaced by the darkened station, Cole joined the others in taking in their immediate surroundings. Their counterparts, predictably, volunteered to search out and began studying the alien - deemed the Sculptors - quantum machinery that had brought them here. His face impassive behind the faceshield of his environmental suit, Cole nodded his assent, frowning when the team turned and began making their way as he wondered if he could trust them to notify them if and when they found the alien dimensional tech. Eyes narrowing, further increasing the creases in his brow, he had the momentary thought of sending Aurin with them before deciding better. The scientists skill would be better used searching the databases.

For the moment, nothing could be studied until they restored at least some semblance of power to the station. Motioning forward with a gloved hand he stated as much to the rest of the team.
OOC:
Do we need to roll to scan with the tricorders on where the reactor/power source is for the station or did we already figure out that using the ship's scanners?
Jun 3, 2024 8:18 pm
M'Ress, being a doctor, not an engineer, felt slightly useless, though being useless on an away mission with her particular expertise was actually a good thing... it meant the trouble hadn't started. Yet.
Jun 3, 2024 8:51 pm
Luna sees Walker's motion and nods to acknowledge. Getting power online is first task at hand and though not a scientist, fixing spacecraft was part of her training.
She starts to go down the corridor toward the power facility.
Jun 3, 2024 11:05 pm
"Power first, then." Aurin began to pick his way through the station, his tricorder held high. Fearlessly, he glided down the hall, a hand dragging along the corridor walls, though he tried not to get in the way of his more terrestrial bretheren, pausing with his boots clamped on the ceiling if he got too far ahead.

"Facinating. The bipedial sapience hypothesis has yet another point of evidence." He looked at the vaguely human sized doors, and around at the shape and proportion of the corridor, wondering momentarily at what differentiated these sculptors from other races, what unique ergonomics populated their living and working space.
Jun 4, 2024 2:51 am
Seuss says:
OOC:
Do we need to roll to scan with the tricorders on where the reactor/power source is for the station or did we already figure out that using the ship's scanners?
OOC:
The power facility has the reactor, which you were clearly able to locate them with the Raven's sensors.

Also, Jayce and Dr. M'Ress' time to shine is coming in due course.
The unusual and spartan color scheme, lit by your EVA suit lights, gives the truth to Aurin-Ah's assertation. Everything here is roughly proportional to the mainly humanoid shapes of beings that the Federation has encountered. Still, the style alone tells you of alien design, with strange pictograms possibly indicating function. Still, without power, you're not going to get doors open by pressing the right sequence. For now, it's prying them open manually.

The power facility opens with two of you working in concert, to roll the door into the left bulkhead on a hidden balance point. This large chamber contains a vast array of machinery and equipment, much of it floating in the zero-gravity environment. A large, roughly pyramid-shaped chunk of crystal dominates the center of the room. An entire section of wall opens into space, presumably torn away by an asteroid collision, affording you a view of the Pinicon Belt beyond.

Examining the machinery requires a Reason +Engineering task with a Difficulty of 2.
Jun 4, 2024 3:49 am
"Oh, I can only hope that's a dilithium array. That would make everything much, much easier to bootstrap." Aurin floated towards the center of the room, anchoring his boots on a slowly rotating piece of debris. His tricorder was out and scanning, but his eye was only half on it, as he analyzed the device itself. While there were innumerable paths to creating enough energy for interstellar travel, some were more common than others, and if this was one of many convergent antimatter reactors, it might be well within his understanding...

Drake posts himself in the corridor to keep watch while the others go about the business of powering up. He doesn't resist a peek inside the power facility though, fascinated by the large room and the floating equipment within.
Jun 4, 2024 9:17 pm
"Be mindful of free-floating equipment" Luna warns. Aurin is immediately at work with the power and Luna intends to go help but as she had spent just a moment too long admiring the terrifying but oddly beautiful view through the hole in the hull, Aurin had already managed the task by the time she got there.
Jun 5, 2024 3:45 am
Aurin-Ah surmises that the crystal in the center of the room powered the entire station, much like a dilithium crystal but on a more powerful scale. The crystal, composed of an unknown material, appears inert but largely intact and capable of storing power and transferring it to other parts of the station.

Jun 5, 2024 5:06 am
"Aha. Interesting."

He held up his tricorder, giving it a tap. "The crystal seems to be acting as some kind of capacitor. We should reconnect it to a safe subsystem and see if it is storing power." Aurin glanced around the destroyed chamber, somewhat listlessly. Untangling the theory of the system was easy, but actually getting it to work would be... well... these weren't exactly what he would describe as laboratory conditions.
Jun 5, 2024 11:27 am
Jayce maneuvers his way with the others down the corridor helping with the forcing of doors as needed. With Ensign Drake on the lookout for trouble, he stations himself inside the power chamber in a location near Doctor M'Ress.

"It's quite amazing, isn't it doctor, how similar these Sculptors may be to what we understand?" he comments rubbing his gloved hand over some foreign pictograms. "But at the same time there are significant differences." He looks toward the power crystal at the room's center, as Aurin works away.

"Well, it seems we are along for moral support thus far. Let's hope it stays that way."

Pleased to see that everything appeared to be going as planned, Drake allowed himself another glance into the power chamber but then chided himself. He had a job to do, and he best devote his attention to watching the crews' backs instead of staring wide-eyed at the wonders inside the chamber.

Luna catches up with Aurin-Ah at the crystal. "Can we fix it?" she asks while looking at the inert power source.
OOC:
It might be worth spending some of the momentum gain to obtain information. Like, why is it off and what is needed to repair the device?
Jun 8, 2024 1:32 am
Grimly Cole followed the rest of the away team deeper into the station's infrastructure, following the course the Raven's sensors pinpointed as the direction of the alien power source. Deferring to his team's more technical expertise, he was quick to jump in on the physical aspects of the endeavor, eager to lend a hand on wrestling the derelict bulkheads aside. Though his concerns for the other team's intentions continually gnawed at him, Cole could not help but crack the slightest of smiles at his crew's enthusiasm at navigating the interior of the strange and very much alien station. Like the others, when finally breaching what he deemed the engineering section of the station he paused to admire the eeire, yet beautiful view afforded by the breach in the hull.

Without being prompted the team went to work, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips in pride as he watched his crew work. Moving to his pilot's side he offered the young woman a comforting grip of the shoulder with his thickly gloved hand, nodding in approaval as he met her eyes before turning to his science officer. "Agreed," he said, meeting the avian eyes of his science officer, "Can it be fixed? I'm confident you're the expertise in this situation so just tell us what you need."
OOC:
My apologies for the very delayed response. It has been a week where I have been burning the candle at all ends. My daughter's HS soccer team has advanced far into the state playoffs and work has been a bit of a bear. Hopefully I wasn't holding things up.

Though I am guessing Luna and Aurin are probably the most skilled in this area? Cole will offer his assistance with command if the @GM thinks it prudent ... otherwise I am guessing it is their show?
Jun 8, 2024 8:33 am
"In my reckoning, if you are asking, commander, there are two steps to this process."

"First, is to get power into the system. This reactor, I can explain how it works, roughly.... I think." His hand touched the back of his helmet in a rare gesture of uncertainty, a strangely human posture. "The crystal, here, is suspended in a reaction, like a dilithium crystal. Unlike dilithium, though, it acts like a capacitor rather than a regulator, or a catalyst. Then, as needed, power is extracted from the crystal, through... well..." he motioned around himself to the floating debris where there was once an engineering compartment.

"With a little help, I think we can try to get the crystal reconnected properly to the power grid. Hopefully it still contains enough energy to bring some more functions online. If not, we may be able to replicate a conduit to the Raven that will let us, to pardon the term, jump-start it.

"The second is to get power to the various subsystems. We'll need to trace power conduits through the station to where we need it. And we'll need to make sure the power is properly regulated, so we don't blow the computer banks when we plug them in. Getting the power routed properly, bringing conduits and systems online... that may require some guesswork, steady hands, and a willingness to interpret and disregard alien warning signage our translators may not be equipped for."

"Frankly, working to decipher at least their symbolic writing might be useful to help keep us from electrocuting ourselves, and would give us a head start when we do get those computers online." He put a hand on his hip as he gazed into deep space, as if they could just hold a linguistics symposium in pressure suits on some leisure deck.
OOC:
Kind of shooting from the hip here to build the scene based on what I can see and guess? Let me know if I am wrong and I can modify things as needed.

Aurin's hands-on engineering skill is pretty mid. If he's not using Reason or spending momentum his dice pools are... shall we say "fair."

Aurin-Ah is exactly on the right track. The crystal and the systems seem intact, but there isn't any power within it to use to power the stations operations. You'll need to devise a way to transfer a large quantity of energy into the crystal, which can then shunt the energy to various systems, such as the Sculptor apparatus, the archives, internal lighting, or artificial gravity. Restoring a breathable atmosphere to the station becomes possible as well, but you'd have to deal with the gaping hull breach.

The breach in the station’s hull is large enough for the away team’s runabout to maneuver close enough to the crystal to initiate a power transfer. Doing so will require some advanced piloting, however. The character flying the craft would need to complete a Control + Conn Task with a Difficulty of 2, assisted by the ship's Engines + Conn, to move the runabout just outside the breach without crashing into the station.

As to Drake, he sees from his tricorder readings that the other crew are at the Sculptor apparatus, and appear to be laying out a bunch of machinery. They also have a lot of phaser rifles, two each, so they may be equipping for an assault.
Jun 8, 2024 9:19 pm
Using the Raven to jump-start the alien craft. This was the cue for Luna.
I'm sure I can get the Raven up to that big breach in the hull and close enough for us to initiate a power transfer. Do you think that would work? I'll return to the Raven immediately and pilot it here. she says and is off.

Once back on the Raven, Luna fires up the engines a makes a maneuver to get the runabout very close to the breach.

Aurin works with Jayce to try and decipher the alien mathematics, translating known constants to exotic units of measure, so they can fabricate some kind of connector to bridge their shuttle and the alien power core.

Aurin blinked as the ensign put a warning over the comms that the other crew was armed. He glanced between the doctor and the commander, and then up to Jayce, as they pored over an alien sigil. There was no whispering in the vaccuum of space, but he die put in a tight channel. "Do you think we can reason with them?" His solid blue eyes were hopeful, but his voice took on a melancholic tinge.

Starfleet officers were the brightest and best individuals that the galaxy had to offer and clearly on display as each member of the crew took the initiative in their chosen fields and diligently attacked the challenges before them. Cole listened intently as Lieutenant Ah intelligently described the process he expected it would take to restore power to the station, his eyes drawing taut in contemplation as he considered the science officer's well thought theories.

Without being asked or ordered, Luna as their pilot and the one most qualified for maneuvering the runabout close, enthusiastically voiced her intentions to return to the Raven. "I'll join you Lieutenant," he stated simply, realizing that at this particular point in their proposed process the maneuvering of the shuttle into place posed the most immediate danger and warranted his attention. Moving to follow the young woman he paused, eyeing their lone security officer who was working at his tricorder, a small smile to his self in appreciation at what he guessed the Ensign was doing. "Doc. Jayce. Continue to assist Aurin in deciphering the alien script while Luna and I get the Raven in place," he ordered with a nod of his head, seeing the Counselor already deep in study.

Upon entering the runabout, Ensign Zarah's report on the activities of their dopplegangers elicited an unflattering and unbecoming of a Starfleet officer response from Cole, the uncouth words of his youth involuntarily leaving his lips. "Let's get power restored, he growled in frustration, "Then we can address our collueagues' intentions.". Taking a few calming breathes he took a seat next to Luna, offering the cerulean haired young woman an apologetic smile for his unsavory words.

"Yes Commander. I will continue to watch out for them. I fear we do not have that much time," he said, stating the obvious.
Jun 10, 2024 4:50 pm
"On the one hand," he reassured the ensign, "in the wartime conditions they are enduring, it could be standard operating procedure. The second rifles could be for us."

But he was very careful not to dismiss his legitimate concern. "On the other, if it's not procedure, well... wouldn't they have told us to expect an attack?"

His long tour in the Neutral Zone, with all its posturing and political feinting and provocation put the feathers on his neck in a ruff, awkwardly filling the bottom of his helmet.
Jun 10, 2024 5:04 pm
"I had thought that as well which is why I am suspicious of the way they are arming themselves," Drake replies. "They would have mentioned an impending attack unless they only recently discovered this information."

Meanwhile on board the Raven, Luna lets out a few words that does not comply with Starfleet Protocol as a large squeaking noise of colliding metal is heard in the runabout.
This was definitly not the precision maneuver Luna was aiming at. She cast a quick apologetic glace at the XO.
OOC:
Thanks, Seuss, I had forgotten about the succeed at a cost option. Happy to take a complication to save the ship.

Your next task is to close up the breach (secondary) that the runabout is currently half through, and repower the crystal (primary). How are you going to get power from the runabout into the crystal?

With no ideas, a simple D1 Reason/Engineering test will reveal ways to do this, D2 I'll even make them safe!
Jun 11, 2024 2:58 pm
As the discussion on their mirror selves intentions continued Cole could only offer a non-committal grunt of acknowledgement, focused instead on assisting in what limited capacity he could their pilot in maneuvering the Raven into the breach in the station. Brow furrowed, his thoughts lent more to Drake's assessment over Aurin's. While he appreciated the optimism, his trust in their counterparts had not been great to start with and their actions only confirmed his prior suspicions.

He winced slightly at the metallic scraping sound of metal on metal as Luna eased the shuttle into the narrow hole in the station's hull, meeting the young woman's apologetic glance with a shrug of his thick shoulders followed by a small smirk at her use of unflattering words, his eyes indicating that he had certainly heard - and used - worse. While he wanted to think the hard part, getting the runabout in place, was complete he knew that their difficulties were only just beginning as they now had to figure out how to connect the Raven to the grid.
OOC:
Engineering is not Cole's strong suit. However would he be able to provide Assistance? Using his Presence/Command or Reason/Comand including also his Focus in Team Dynamics and/or Lead By Example?

Aurin-Ah uses the tools at his disposal to analyze the crystal and the runabout's design. He determines there are two methods that could be used to recharge the crystal.

The phasers. Tuning the phaser emitters from the runabout to the proper resonant frequency will deliver vast energy to the crystal capacitor without harming it. Getting that frequency wrong would be disastrous, but there are safe ways to test it first.

A cable. The antimatter dilithium reactor can be channeled through a high energy power conduit. This would require some cannibalizing of parts from either the runabout or the station.

Lastly, thinking about the runabout, he realizes that the shield generators from the Raven can be used to create a force field to seal the breach against atmosphere leakage. The Raven would need to remain in the hole, but it could give you time to effect the repairs in a comfortable environment.

Pensively Cole listens to the ideas and recommendations set forth by Aurin, finding his self nodding in approval in the more comfortable confines of the Raven's interior. The look he passed to Luna showed not only how impressed he was with his Science Officer's proposals but included also his young pilot's abilities to maneuver the runabout within the chaotic confines of the asteroid field.

"Aurin. Begin modulating the phasers to the appropriate frequency," he ordered, including Doc and Jayce in the team as well, "Drake. Inform our compatriots of our plan --- I don't want to touch off an incident when we start firing the phasers."

Turning to his blue-tinted haired pilot he offered a small smile, indicating that he had not forgotten about her role, "Hold her steady --- and see if you can seal the breach with the shields."

The runabout is positioned in the hole and Luna makes sure it stays there. Then she turns on the shield to try creating a more safe environment in the station.

"Let me know if you need me to do anything to connect the power, Aurin"
OOC:
Any rolls required for this action?
Jun 17, 2024 8:26 pm
"At once, Commander.

Drake informs their mirror images of their plan while he burns to ask them why they are doubly arming themselves. Perhaps after he apprises them of what his crew are up to, they will offer that information.
Jun 17, 2024 11:44 pm
OOC:
The rolls have already been made for this action.
By Luna's hand and with Aurin's guidance and monitoring, the runabout's phaser banks charge the crystal. The capacitor stores the energy, and you tune the frequency a few times before cutting off the power transfer.

Once the crystal is charged, the first key task is complete, and the away team can now transfer power to the archives chamber, the Sculptor apparatus, and the station’s environmental systems to re-establish atmosphere and artificial gravity.

When Drake communicates with the other team, they indicate that something is happening there, and recommend that you send someone to observe.
Jun 18, 2024 1:37 pm
I'm not sure I fully trust them. If we send someone alone it could end with them not returning
Jun 18, 2024 7:04 pm
"I agree," Cole grunted, scowling at wondering just what the other team was up to and what possible issues they could have run into, "Drake, Jayce --- go check it out."

Reluctantly putting his concerns towards their dopplegangers aside he viewed the now glowing and powered crystal through appraising eyes. "Let's hold off on powering the Sculptor apparatus for now and concentrate on the stations environmental systems and archives. I'd rather know what we're dealing with before firing up the quantum device."

Jun 19, 2024 4:22 pm
Aurin breathed a sigh of relief as the phaser array, designed to blast space debris and the occasional belligerent, yielded to their deft hand. He thanked Starfleet for its foresight, knowing that any energy emitter could be a scientific instrument. He couldn't imagine trying to wire a disruptor for the task.

"I think we are holding steady, Commander. Luna, I am trying to try and use the mining tractor array to give us some remote control - let me know if you see it come up on your console." He hoped the fine controls he had installed in the tactical pod would let them manipulate the crystal to fine tune the flow of power, and tried to wire the various linkages they had installed to bridge the gap to computer controlled conduits - ones which they could open and close remotely from the Raven to distribute (or cut) power to various compartments on the station.

His hand bumped awkwardly into his helmet as he tried to massage his brow. He let the frustration of the moment simmer away as he monitored the foreign displays. He turned to the M'Ress. "Doctor, do you think you can calibrate life support in the computer banks to support Class M conditions? I can try to route power there. We can use that as a staging area... and I think we should get some atmosphere somewhere on board if people are, well... if it comes to the worst."
OOC:
Is it possible to spend Momentum to wire remote controlled access to the engineering controls to a console in the Raven? Aurin is willing to remove the converted tactical pod to leave in the station as a component to control the engineering through computer interface, the tractor beam, and the mining phaser.

I'll give it a shot. Seems one of the safer options at the moment
OOC:
what would the appropriate roll be in this situation

"The console is showing a safety error in the Mining Tractor Array" Luna replies "But I can do a manual override. Hang on." Luna presses a few buttons on the screen and soon the red flashing sign is replaced by all green power supply statistics.

Jayce accompanies Ensign Drake. He prepares to deescalate hostility if needed, but hopes the reason they are being summoned proves not to be adversarial.
Jun 23, 2024 4:52 pm
Doctor M'Ress, despite her profound medical knowledge, is unable to make sense of the baffling options available from utilizing the Sculptor technology. Specifying an Earth-like atmosphere eludes her.
Jun 28, 2024 4:46 pm
Despite her best efforts, the Doctor could not make heads nor tails of the alien technology in an effort to bring breathable atmosphere to the station. Cole shrugged, giving the felinoid medical officer and appreciative nod for the effort, before stating aloud that they would just have to get comfortable with their suits. Turning to Lieutenant Ah, "The archives then --- let's see if we can figure out what we're dealing with or in the very least see what these species were attempting to accomplish."

Frowning slightly, "Drake. Jayce. SitRep?"
Jun 29, 2024 4:43 pm
The investigative team heads toward the archives, now with power, to see what they can learn about the station and most importantly how this multiverse scrambling effect might be reversed.

This spherical, sparsely furnished room features engravings in the walls roughly shaped like hands with the fingers spread open, though each hand engraving has only four fingers. Scores of these handprints cover the walls of the chamber.

Tricorder scans of the room show a crystalpowered computer mainframe with virtually limitless amounts of data storage capacity. Aurin-Ah, M'Ress and Luna upon inspecting the room quickly suspect the machinery here stores vast quantities of information and may even facilitate an advanced form of artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, Drake and Jayce head toward the doppelgangers. Do they call you that? you might wonder. They find the other team soon enough, working away.

This spherical chamber features a single computer terminal at its center, and crystalline material rings the walls and ceiling. Long corridors meet at opposite sides of the room, stretching to the other sections of the space station.

They've stripped two of the phaser rifles down in and apparent attempt to use them to power the apparatus, but now that power is on, they're examining the computer terminal.

Captain Walker asks, "We've got power, good work. I think we'll need the databanks to make sense of the functions of this device, but it appears to have a neural interface."
Jun 29, 2024 5:05 pm
Aha! So that's why they have so many rifles. Whew.

"Looks like you are getting things figured out. Can we help in any way?" Drake is eager to approach the terminal and see what they are seeing, but he treads carefully. They still have working phaser rifles. When mention is made of a neural interface, he wonders who will volunteer to connect to it.
Jun 29, 2024 6:31 pm
With The Doppelgangers

Walker points it out, saying, "No, not much to do until we get the specs from their databank. It looks powerful though, no telling what we could do. Hopefully there is enough instructions we can interpret to send us both home, and maybe us with a weapon against the Borg."
Jun 29, 2024 8:47 pm
"If we get the mainframe up and running. Do you think you can get anything useful out of it, Aurin-Ah? Like how we get home?" Luna asks after the quick inspection of the room.
Jun 30, 2024 12:51 am
If it could house an intelligence, we should probably avoid waking it up she looks at the screens and interfaces
Jun 30, 2024 4:13 am
Neural interface....resonates with Jayce. What an interesting opportunity it would be for an empathic Haliian to connect to such a system created and by an ancient alien intelligence. What would the neural network resemble, the Sculptors' own minds? After Drake asks if they could help in anyway, Jayce has to specifically ask about the interface:

"Captain, I studied some of the symbols in the power room with our science officer, Lieutenant Ah, and am possibly beginning to formulate ideas about some of the ways the Sculptors approach logic and communication. Does it appear this neural link is the sole interface to the Sculptor apparatus?"

Aurin peered around the room with a degree of wonderment. The decorations or ergonomics of the device were fascinating. He paced the chamber, looking for anything that might be a console, with a display or screen, or any physical mechanisms used to start the whole thing up. "We can hope the system starts up in phases, but our understanding of the system is limited. I'm just hopeful we can turn it on at all. If something... sour happens, we do have a remote cutoff for the power."
Jul 2, 2024 11:25 am
Cole breathed a small, slight sigh of relief at Drake and Jayce's report. Pleased that his mistrust was not entirely warranted towards their counterparts and enthused that they were patiently waiting on them to study the archives before attempting to operate the device. Fighting the urge to reach up in an attempt to scratch his beard, contained within the safety of his pressurized helmet, he considered his medical officer's words and in agreement that and alien AI was probably not something they wanted to activate with full control straight out of the gate.

"Power it up," he grunted to Lieutenant Ah, comforted by the science officer's confidence that if things got dicey they would be able to power down - assuming of course the AI let them.
Jul 2, 2024 8:10 pm
"Aye, sir." His normally jovial tone took on a rather serious note. "There's a lot we don't know about this... device. So be prepared for... well, security measures, neural interface compatibility issues, or... well, anything, really."

He prodded a few of the buttons on his tricorder, instructing the Raven to allow the power into the computer room, figuratively flipping the 'on' switch.
Jul 3, 2024 1:47 am
Restoring power to the room causes the hand engravings to glow with crystalline energy, as if beckoning the characters to touch the engravings.
Jul 3, 2024 11:11 am
"Should we like... touch it?" Luna asks a bit skeptical
Jul 3, 2024 5:43 pm
I have my reservations. ..but it may need to connect with us to send us home
Jul 20, 2024 5:33 pm
OOC:
Your choices include researching it more, but for the sake of expediency, interfacing with the device will require someone to place their hand in the socket. This is likely similar to the neutral interface discovered by the doppelganger crew.
Jul 20, 2024 7:01 pm
I would rather not stick my paws in there and risk not being able to help you all...who wants to test it?
Jul 20, 2024 7:35 pm
"I'll do it." Drake felt that it was his responsibility to do so, never mind the risks to his own limb, or worse, his life.

Rather than thinking about it for too long and possibly losing his nerve, Drake sticks his hand in the socket.
Jul 20, 2024 8:30 pm
Drake feels a sense of disorientation as the space station dissolves into darkness and is then replaced by a dazzling array of miniature galaxies swirling around him like snowflakes. As he takes in the wondrous sight, you hear a voice warn, "Careful. Each one is its own quantum universe. It’s very easy to get lost here."

The voice comes from a humanoid form standing in the middle of the swirling galaxies in Drake's mind. The creature possesses lizard-like features and hands with four long fingers. The creature refers to itself as the Custodian of the Archives and explains that, "Welcome. I am an artificial intelligence engineered to maintain the Sculptor apparatus and assist the Sculptors who use it. I will answer your questions," it says with a matter-of-fact tone, with a trace of melancholy.

Drake gasps at the idea he could be lost in this ... this ... he's not sure what this is. He thinks his eyes are open but maybe they aren't as he snatches dizzying glimpses of planets, moons, suns, all floating around before him at speed.

"Thank you," he replies to the welcoming introduction and begins to feel more at ease.

"Would it be possible for you to show us how to go home? What else can you help us with?"
Jul 21, 2024 10:39 pm
At the use of the pronoun "us" the custodian forms as a hologram before everyone in the archives.

Audibly only to Drake as atmospheric integrity hasn't been established, it responds, "Using the Sculptor apparatus to open a fissure to a particular quantum reality, such as the one from which your group originated, poses little challenge. An operator must simply wear the helmet in the Sculptor chamber and focus their thoughts on the correct quantum reality. "

"Not just think, but focus. Don't let your thoughts stray, but it should be intuitive. Your will will guide the apparatus."
Jul 23, 2024 5:14 pm
"Someone should go to the Sculptor chamber and put the helmet on that is located there. Focus on our home, our reality. This is how we can return home."

Drake relays this message to crew and hopes one of them will volunteer.
Jul 23, 2024 9:38 pm
"That's it?!?" Luna sounds a bit skeptical "Sounds super easy. Though, we probably have to beat the other team to it if we want to return to our reality and not theirs." She gets ready to move to the Sculptor Chamber.

They have been scanning the specs from the databank and are hopeful that the scans will result in instructions we can interpret to send both our crews home. They are also hopeful this will uncover a weapon useful to them against the Borg"

He then says, in a more excited tone than he expects, "I am willing to connect to the interface. The idea of exploring first hand the Sculptors' concept of a neural network design intrigues both my Haliian mind as an empath and my professional mind as a psychologist."

He pauses in a moment of pensiveness and then suggests, "Has Ensign Drake relayed to our Commander what is here? If not one of us should."

While the experiments in the archives have gone on, the other team has been trying to understand the capabilities of the station.

Captain Walker of the other universe says, "If it had the power to send us home, could it be used to send the Borg there somewhere else? What if we took the station home with us?"

He holds up the neural link. "This is the only one we've seen. You can use it to go home of course, we'll use it after to make whatever changes we can to save our universe from annihilation by the Borg."
Jul 31, 2024 4:07 am
"We should all meet and decide what we should do with the apparatus." Aurin didn't like all this skulking about and playing telephone with the other crew. Although they hadn't definitively proven the device worked, they were close enough to start testing, and he didn't want anyone trying to shear reality in half by grappling over a phaser rifle trying to sieze control of the station.
Jul 31, 2024 9:07 pm
Luna is following the exchange between Jayce and alternate Cole Walker. She was ready to fight over control of the apparatus and keep the other team at bay while using it to get home if things got down to that.
But then Aurin-Ah suggested a meeting.
OOC:
As a player I'm fine with a diplomatic solution. Luna got no social skills. She is just here for the flying and shooting, so someone else should do the talking.
Aug 2, 2024 5:51 am
Jayce hopes that his feeling of unease at the doppelganger Walker's plan to use the neural link 'after' Jayce's crew to save their universe and possibly 'take the station' home, doesn't manifest outwardly on his face as mistrust. Even if the plan is well intentioned...well...if it were to go wrong, who knows how the Borg could employ the station across quantum realities?

Disappointed that Captain Walker's words have forced him to conclude--despite his excitement to link with the interface-- that no one should hastily jump into the headset.

"Captain, judging by the symbols and markings I studied in the power chamber, I am convinced that the Sculptors' neural network is vast and intricate and whatever the neural link interfaces with is equally so. I believe we should wait for your complete analysis of the databank and our two crews should converge to share notes. I believe our science officer Aurin-Ah's insight will be helpful here. I left him while he was uncovering the workings of the power chamber."

Jayce recognizes Lt. Luna's subtle posturing of readiness to fight if needed. He hopes it does not come to that.

Despite his seeming nervous misgivings, Lieutenant Ah cautiously - his tone serious as he warned against what they could find - tapped the commands on his tricorder to begin the power transfer. As the station slowly began to power up the symbols around the chamber began to glow. The Away Team quickly began a quick discussion on how best to proceed - despite the clear perception that to activate any systems on the station would require someone to interact with the strange, alien engravings - before Drake took it upon his self to be the 'guinea pig'.

Cole's eyes widened in surprise and he moved to intercept the younger man but he was too late. The Ensign's body became rigid, a distant focus to his eyes, before after some time a strange apparition appeared. Jumping back with a start, Cole nearly drew his phaser before realizing Drake must have some how triggered it's appearance. Silently it stood, the room quiet for what seemed a considerable amount of time before the young security officer spoke, confirming the way home lay with the apparatus that the 'other' team was investigating. Alarmed, Luna raced off, seemingly worried that they would be stranded here in this reality as the other team made their way home before the interface confirmed through Drake that it would reamin operational as long as it had power to do so.

Aurin then made a sensible suggestion that Cole could not help but wholeheartedly agree. "Drake," he said, wondering if the Ensign could hear him, "Disengage if you can. I think it's time we rendevous with the other team and decide our next course of action."

Eyes focused through narrowed lids on the young officer, he tilted his head to address the doctor, "Doc. If he doesn't come out of it soon, stick around and make sure he checks out. If he doesn't disengage let me know ASAP." Meeting the rest of his teams' eyes he nodded towards the door, indicating that they should move out. With a final worried glance at his Ensign he made to follow his crew to the apparatus room.

"Yes, commander." Part of Drake does not want to obey orders. It's far too fascinating in this mysterious plane, but he does as requested and withdraws his hand.
Aug 3, 2024 2:21 pm
The connection with the Archives ceases immediately when Drake withdraws his hand. There is a moment's disorientation as he adjusts to only having access to the infinitesimal chamber of the Archives, rather than the infinite space of the virtual reality he was in. But he's a professional and his struggle is barely perceptible and over quickly.
Aug 5, 2024 2:31 pm
"I am ready commander to share what findings you deem necessary with the other team."

Drake stares at his hand, wiggling his fingers as if to reassure himself that his hand is intact and working as it should.
Aug 5, 2024 8:03 pm
The young ensign broke the connection as ordered, withdrawing his hand and clearly a bit disoriented though in a strong display of professionalism shook off the barely noticeable effects. With a slight dip of his head in respect, Cole indicated his satisfaction at Drake's willingness to be descreet.

"I see no need - at least at this juncture - to hold anything back. Go ahead and share what you found," he stated with a sweep of his hand, waving Drake and the Doc on towards the rest of the team's retreating forms.

OOC:
Yikes, sorry, I think we are waiting on me?
Drake joins the others and to the best of his abilities attempts to share the pertinent information he has gleaned. As to the scope of what he saw, he'd never be able to do it justice.

"The figure of a man, or an approximation of one, stood in the center of a mass of swirling galaxies each with its own quantum universe. It guided me and told me that it is very important to maintain focus or I could drift away and get lost. It mentioned that it has unlimited uses as long as power to it is maintained. To make a long story short, it can take us home by opening a fissure to our quantum reality. Someone puts on the helmet in the Sculptor chamber and focuses their thoughts on the correct quantum reality. It should be intuitive, and you simply use your will."

The Sculptor Apparatus
After they discuss things while Drake ran to interface with the archives, Luna believes that the doppelgangers will insist on poring over the information the interface contains to learn to use the Sculptor apparatus. After that, they will plan to harness the power of the apparatus to eliminate all traces of the Borg from their quantum reality.

The Archives
The Custodian appears as a hologram in the chamber, understanding the same thing. " The other beings, the ones not from your quantum reality, they intend to make changes to their reality, great and powerful changes. They wish to eliminate all traces of the species known as the Borg. This will have unintended consequences that will ripple through multiple realities, not just their own. It is impossible to predict the damage that will cause."

Aurin shrugged helplessly. "Give me a few weeks, a team, a laboratory, and maybe there would be more to tell." He turned towards the hologram that appeared. Aurin lifted a hand to rub his brow in thought, cheeks pursing as it bounced off of his helmet.

"Can we instruct you to limit the scope of your operation...?"
Aug 13, 2024 7:22 pm
Cole's eyes narrowed as the computer interface hologram reappeared and confirmed what he had already expected, again leaving him with the dilemma about to ensure he and his team - and those of their counterparts - returned to their proper realities while simultaneously ensuring the other team did not weaponize the apparatus. As Aurin queried the interface, he turned to the apparition, brow rising curiously, hopeful in a positive response while harboring doubts.

"Or is it possible that we send them back to their own quantum reality first? Or do they need to interface with the apparatus to make it work?"
Aug 14, 2024 3:28 am
The Custodian says, "I do not have the ability to control what you do with the apparatus. I am merely an information source. If you wish to stop them from doing what they want, then yes, you could send them home before they attempt to alter the universal balance."
Aug 14, 2024 12:05 pm
This is probably the least dangerous solution, but if this device exists there as well....i worry what they would do. Does the device exist across worlds?
Aug 14, 2024 6:25 pm
Cole nodded in understanding at the holograms confirmation, brow arching at the Doctor's as he followed the logic, "Or rather could we expect the apparatus and surrounding station to be in a similar if not worse condition than we found this one?

"Or if we repair one, do all, across all realities become so?"
Aug 14, 2024 7:33 pm
Aurin made a valiant effort to pinch his forehead, his fingers thunking up against the environmentally sealed transparent aluminum faceplate. "Prefacing this with the caveat that multiverse theory is not my primary field of study..."

His eyes closed and he took a deep breath. "If I understand the theory correctly, a universe cannot unilaterally collapse the multiverse because if it could, it would have done so, through the principles of infinite probability and spontaneous generation. Because if a multiverse-collapsing bomb could exist and then detonate, it would exist and have detonated in some universe."

"It is theoretically possible to destroy or collapse a universe, but because we have not been collapsed, some mechanism must exist that limits the propagation of multiverse-spanning phenomena, including a device like this station. It's not just likely, but guaranteed, that in some other universal fork that we already fixed the station, or the station would have survived undamaged, and yet..." he motioned around him to the floating debris from the malfunctioning artificial gravity, and the general airlessness of the room.

He paused for a moment to let them digest that rather dense explanation. "This station existing as a bridged singularity had occurred to me, but with all this engineering I haven't had time to sample and scan local quantum signatures. We have operational priorities, of course." He scratched the side of his helmet. "But the fact that we have only encountered three instances of ourselves - two others, and us, of course - suggests and arguably confirms that the device's scope across quantum realities is limited."

"In short... it does not exist everywhere, so it cannot be a multiversal singularity. That means it may not exist in some universes, but it does in others. Where it is native to is a salient question - if it exists in their universe, I'm not sure the Prime Directive would permit us to stop them from using it. But if it is from another quantum universe - our own, or another universe altogether, then it behooves us to contain it and, if it's not... 'ours,' to use the term very loosely, then it may be best to send it home."

The Custodian listens. "If you were to scan the station and the surrounding space-time, you would find that this station is in it's original quantum reality. Asteroids from dozens, even hundreds or more realities, have been drawn here by accident. Your people were caught in that wake. I have no knowledge of whether the technology of the Sculptors existed in other realities."
Aug 15, 2024 6:14 pm
Cole's brow furrowed as he considered his science officer's words, the creases deepening at their strange AI host's words, as he thought on his next orders. "It sounds to me like our host here is insinuating that this is the original device - perhaps the only device," Cole stated, a considering glint to his commanding eyes, "I'm wondering if we just send our counterparts home and hope this is the only device in existence or if not that theirs is in such a state as to be hard to repair.

"That's the first challenge, the second being how to stop the station from being active and drawing things from other realities into its own AND protecting it from further damage."
Aug 17, 2024 4:46 pm
Inside the Sculptor room the other Cole commands the other Doctor M'Ress to attempt to interface with the Sculptor Apparatus and find away to alter their universe to destroy the Borg. The Doctor has objections, but keeps them to herself, she knows that as distasteful as that is to her healer's instincts and training, everything they know depends on this one chance.
Aug 22, 2024 3:23 am
In the apparatus chamber:

"Doctor," instinctually and sharply interrupts Jayce without thinking, "No one should hastily jump into the headset, without a detailed analysis of the databank."

Realizing that his reaction could be construed as overstepping his bounds to the doppelganger Walker who is the commanding officer in the room, Jayce turns to the the captain, "What have you found in your analysis Captain? I know I am not the counselor of your crew, but I strongly advise not to send your doctor hastily into the complexity of the Sculptor's neural network. I can tell you that there is no certainly that her mind will be able to safely navigate its intricacies. Failure could send her into a coma or take her life, further it could put a cog in the apparatus and render it useless." Jayce was mostly bluffing, but he hoped to buy time for Aurin and his crew to join the doppelganger crew in this chamber.

"Again, I feel we should consult with my crew's science officer to see what analysis he has made and combine his conclusions with your crew's"

What is taking them so long? Luna ponders. She hadbeen ready to engange the doppelganger crew when the suggestion of a meeting was made but since then there had only been silence.
"Excellent idea, Lt. Devar" Luna agrees
Aug 22, 2024 9:27 pm
Drake leaves the archives to join the others in the Sculptor room. He has a feeling that things might get a little hot and wanted to be ready to intervene if needed. Power like that did things to people. He arrived just when Jace was advising about the doppelgänger doctor entering the neural network. He didn't offer any opinions of his own but chose to keep reading the room, looking for danger and watching his crew's back.

Then Doppelganger captain holds a hand up as Jayce speaks. He's about to voice his override but ..

@Seck care to make a roll to convince him? Two successes he'll pause long enough to talk it through. Four he'll actually follow your suggestion.

Cole watched the retreating form of his eager Ensign Zarah, who upon concluding his - brash and maybe ill-advised - interface with the station's computer, was off to resume his duties keeping a diligent and security minded eye on the other Away Team. Cole's brow furrowed, resisting the urge to reach up at an attempt to scratch at his day-old growth - currently made impossible by his environmental suit helmet - as he diverted his attention to the space beyond the gaping hole in the station's exterior, deep in thought.

"Aurin," he stated, gazed still affixed upon the impressive spacescape, "Let's regroup with the others. I'm sure your expertise will be needed.

"Doc. I want you here close to the shuttle in case we need an emergency transport or evacuation.

"Continue to interact with the AI ... see what else you can discover."

Turning from the both beautiful, yet violent display of the asteroid field he met his two officer's eyes, offering a nod of assurance to the Doctor and tilt of his head towards the rooms exit to Lieutenant Ah. Motioning the avianoid towards the rest of the crew with a sweep of his hand.
Aug 23, 2024 9:09 pm
She smiled weakly at the AI, not entirely sure what to ask it. Is there any danger in connecting with the interface if you are a different species than the sculptors? What did they look like?
Aug 24, 2024 3:51 am
OOC:
Jayce only got one success, even with the extra momentum roll.
Aug 24, 2024 3:12 pm
Jayce's words fall on deaf ears. Even as your crew move into positions, the other reality's Doctor takes the headset in the Sculptor Apparatus room and begins to try and learn what she can. It would be easier for her if you interfaced with the Archives. Still, she had been ordered to try.
Aug 26, 2024 4:34 pm
Aurin looked a little disappointed that he was being called away from the archive, but it sounded like things were getting a bit more urgent. He patted Doctor M'Ress on the shoulder. "Let us know if you find anything that might change their minds." With that, he turned to join Cole. He did not fancy himself a diplomat or a man of action, but he couldn't refuse the call. Perhaps he could come to a solution working directly with the machine.

"Commander,"
he spoke, as he followed Cole through the ruined corridors, drifting in the microgravity, "We know what we want, but... what is the range acceptable outcomes, here? If we can't stop them from using the device... do we destroy it?" He left hanging what the consequences of that might be.
Aug 26, 2024 7:25 pm
The darkened, battered corridors of the derelict station seemed to match Cole's mood, his own questions asked aloud as Aurin pushed for clarity on their orders moving forward. The station's interface was clear, any dramatic changes to any reality would have the potential - or definite rather - consequences across all the multiverse. On the one hand, besides the fact that Starfleet and Federation would not condone the elimination of an entire species - hostile or otherwise - there was no way to know, in addition to unintended and disastrous effects to all realities not just their dopplegangers, what the consequences would be to the apparatus that might effect their ability to return to their own reality.

On the other hand, he could sympathize with their plight. It was clear their ongoing war with the Borg was taking a tremendous toll - had he been given the same opportunity at the heart of the war with the Dominion, would he had considered the same bold strategy. With a resigned and frustrated grunt he responded to the science officer's questions, "I think we have to consider it a possibility."

Entering the chamber that held the strange race's, known to them only as 'The Sculptors', Cole's eyes narrowed and his brow furrowed as he instantly picked up on the chilly demeanor of his crew and that of their counterparts with the other Doctor M'Ress seemingly plugged in to the alien machine via headset.

"Lieutenant Devar. SitRep," he barked as he scanned the room through narrowed, hard eyes.

"They are trying to use the device, sir" Luna replies to the request of a situation report. "Do we stop them?"
Aug 27, 2024 5:06 am
"As Luna said commander, and they refused my pleas to reconsider and wait for our two teams to collaborate our information."
Aug 27, 2024 12:15 pm
Cole's crewmen's urgent reports filled the confined space of his environmental suit's helmet as he held his alternate self in a steely gaze, a brow rising in unspoken question as he waited for an explanation.
Aug 27, 2024 2:16 pm
Captain Walker is not immune to the rising tension. "Once we learn to use it, we'll send you back to your reality. Then we'll go home ourselves. If you want to send yourselves back first, then go ahead. Either way, we will use the device, and we will eliminate the Borg in our reality." He's firm, prepared to argue this indefinitely.
Aug 27, 2024 8:34 pm
As if facing a mirror, Cole was very familiar with the stubbornness on display, and like his counterpart he would not balk. "The station's interface was very adamant that a dramatic change like that would have significant consequences across multiple realities," he stated, his tone matter-of-fact, "What good is it to us to be sent home only to find our reality changed beyond recognition."

He couldn't be sure if this Cole Walker's upbringing mirrored his own, "Besides ... my experience is that nature will always find a way.

"Sure you may eliminate the Borg from your reality ... only to find another race had stepped in to take it's place."

His own thoughts drifted to the Dominion. How many realities saw them to be the conquerors.

"Why don't my science officer, counselor, and doctor join yours in interacting with the AI a bit more? There may be an alternative - or less potentially devestating option yet to be discovered and explored."
OOC:
Would Cole's 'Lead By Example' Focus apply for an additional success?

It's clear that the other team will not back down. They're tensing up, ready to act. Based upon your idea, they look at the Captain who considers it for a moment.

"It would be foolish to ignore the offer. I'll give you a standard hour to find an alternative, and then we're proceeding. We must find a solution that eliminates the Borg threat against the Federation. I will not be responsible for the billions of deaths still to come by not eliminating this cancer before it kills the body. What ripples there may be in your reality have to be weighed against the total loss of freedom and virtual genocide against dozens of races that will occur in ours."
Aug 28, 2024 5:00 pm
Aurin found himself a seat on one of the equipment cases. His hands folded in front of him, as the immediate threat seemed to subside. With time and space, he could only hope Jayce could bring them to a more reasonable place. They seemed well cushioned from compassion by conviction and desperation, and he doubted that this was the moment to appeal to the rational.
Aug 29, 2024 8:25 pm
Immediately the tension that had been building in the confines of the apparatus room lessened somewhat as the alternate Cole agreed to allow some more time for research. Dipping his head slightly in respect towards the Captain, Cole turned towards Jayce and Aurin, "Jayce. Assist the doctor here in sussing out how the headset interacts with the apparatus. Take some scans - see if it can be operated from a tricorder or alternate method as I am not keen on someone having to interact with an alien device." He placed emphasis on scanning the device, holding the counselor's gaze with his own momentarily hoping his officer would catch the importance of his reference.

"Aurin. Let's return to the Archives and see what more can be gleaned from the Custodian."

To his other two officers he held their looks, his eyes flicking slightly towards their dopplegangers and hoping they would understand he meant for them to stay and observe the other team without having to mention it.

@The_Librarian - You are correct. Cole was addressing the other Doctor M'Ress. Sorry for the confusion. As his orders stand (and as always anyone can suggest or do their own thing) Cole and Aurin will be joining the OG Doctor M'Ress in the Archives while Jayce stays in the Apparatus Room to work with the other doctor M'Ress on the study of the apparatus.

Luna and Drake are to remain with Jayce - as Cole doesn't trust the other Team.
Sep 1, 2024 3:08 pm
Drake is alternately tense then slightly less so as the hour of reprieve is issued. He continues to keep a steady watch over his crew's safety and on the actions of the doppelgangers.
Sep 1, 2024 9:16 pm
Jayce nods in understanding to Commander Walker and when the Commander and Aurin leave, Jayce readies his tricorder and thinks for a moment...an idea comes to him. He turns to the doppleganger M'Ress.

"Doctor, I believe a good plan of action is to train a tricorder on the brain wave patterns of two of our officers. It would of course be better to train it on many, hundreds even, but two will have to suffice for the sake of time. After we do that, we can then, with another tricorder, scan the apparatus as we broadcast the trained neural patterns through the headset.

I know Captain Walker has granted only an hour for this exploration. But if we work efficiently, I feel in half that time we could scan enough training data into the tricorder to have a viable chance to get the apparatus to respond.

One thing...that could increase the efficiency of this endeavor is if I were to, as an empath, telepathically connect to the two officers we train the tricorders on. This will allow me to make fine tuning adjustments to the tricorder settings that we otherwise would not be able to make. Ready to give it a shot?"

Jayce spends time linking the two officers together. While running them through some tests, her find that the apparatus is actually fairly easy to use, it's quite responsive, reacting to brain patterns, querying intentions and filling in what's missing. The power of the tricorder just won't be sufficient to act as a medium for that neural conversation.
Sep 3, 2024 4:33 am
Jayce explains to Captain Walker that the apparatus responds to the tricorder, but just needs more power to do the job.

Then he gets on his communicator to update Commander Walker. "Commander, basically, we've linked a few officers to the apparatus, but a step removed, using a tricorder as a go-between. We've found that the apparatus is very responsive to brain patterns and intentions and it's relatively easy to operate, but the power of our tricorders is just not sufficient to serve as a medium for any meaningful neural conversation. The tricorder is calibrated but needs another power source; this particular route of remote control is a no go unless there is a way to supplement the tricorder's power supply."

Once they were out of the room, Aurin turned to the Commander. "An hour. We need to go over our options." He offered him a tilt of the head one might equate to a sarcastic smile. "I don't suppose you have any ideas?"
Sep 3, 2024 6:38 pm
Cole turned to his science officer, a touch of smugness to the grin he extended to Aurin, "I'm hoping Jayce understood what I was after and makes a scan of the headset.

"I don't suppose we could replicate a second headset? Send the other team back unawares?"

He tapped the underside of his helmet's visor, desperate to rub his chin. "We could try, but we only have an hour. That's an awfully narrow window to analyze a thing, much less fabricate a working copy. Plugging the scan directly into the replicator... well, let's just say I'd want the Doctor to have her say before anyone put it on. And then there's the question of where to plug it in. We may need to get access to a maintenance space adjacent to the apparatus." He shook his head. "It might be possible, but... well, I would want to see the scans before I made any promises I wasn't prepared to keep."

Aurin shook his head, rubbing harder, as if he could get to his beak through the transparent material by will alone. "However... while bringing the station back online, I did install remote cutoff switches to the main power conduits. If we need to buy time, I could... fluctuate them, simulate a brownout. But if they discover them, we could lose leverage. Or worse, prompt them to act early without consulting us. But it could get us more time to try and seize control of the device. Or, at the very least, to give Jayce the opportunity to unwind the other crew, get them out of crisis mode, so we can negotiate." Aurin gave a bit of a sigh. "I don't suppose we've given up on diplomacy? They might be convinced that the consequences are too dire."
Sep 4, 2024 12:45 am
OOC:
Umm well…yes…of course Jayce completely understood what Cole meant…completely…and he definitely scanned the headset and sent the scan to the commander. 😉

So, Qralloq can I make a roll to see if Jayce caught the drift?

OOC:
@Seck, I'm fine with Jayce having gotten that. He's intuitive and you've worked together for some time
Sep 11, 2024 4:11 am
Upon wrapping up his communication to Commander Walker, Jayce concludes with, "I'm sending the brain activity data set to Lieutenant Ah's tricorder, Commander. Perhaps he quickly can find a way to utilize the power in the Archives to process the data to the extent needed to be the medium that powers the neural conversation with the apparatus."

And with that he broadcasts the detailed scans of the headset along with the dataset of brain activity to Aurin's tricorder.

A slightly pleased smile creased Cole's otherwise grim lips as he saw in addition to the data on the headset and how it interfaced with its operator that Jayce had also included detailed scans of the headset itself. He raised a questioning brow to Aurin, nonverbally inquiring of the science officer if anything else would be helpful before replying back to the Counselor, "Good work Lieutenant. Perhaps over the next hour you can do some of that counseling stuff and do what you can to ease the tensions of our counterparts --- I may need to give diplomacy another crack if we are unable to produce anything actionable on our end."

Closing the channel he turned back to Aurin, "Perhaps you should fluctuate those power conduits as soon as we get back to the Archives.

"Would seem less suspicious if we have to buy us some more time later."
OOC:
Seemed like we might have all be waiting on each other so I figured I'd add a little something to move us forward.
Sep 13, 2024 7:56 am
"Aye." He looked down at his tricorder. "I'll beam back to the ship at once to see if I can fabricate something. If this is the plan, we'll need to find some way to connect it, probably in some maintenance area near the apparatus, if we can get there without disturbing the other crew."

He plugged a few commands into his tricorder, trying to program the power mains to emulate a brownout in ten or so minutes, giving it time to not look terribly suspicious.

He patted his comm badge. "Doctor, would you like a few minutes out of that helmet? I'd like your assistance back at the ship..." While he had some confidence in his ability to build out a connection to the apparatus, he definitely wanted a professional hand fabricating and calibrating the neural interface.

Pleased with the efficiency, despite their current situation and the unknowns on whether they would be able to return to their reality or not, with which Aurin and the Doctor dove into their task Cole offered the pair an appreciative nod and keyed his comm to his flight control officer, "Luna. I need you back at the Archives."

Drake had been struggling with the idea of sending the doppelgangers back to their home without their permission. Now he realized that the team were making the process more difficult than it needed to be and were hell bent on doing it. It was time to share what he had learned.

"We only need to use the helmet to send the others back to their planet. This is what I learned from the apparatus. Then we send ourselves home." Any of their crew not with Drake would have received the same communication.
Sep 23, 2024 8:37 pm
At the XO's command, Luna returns to the archive. Though she is wary to let the dopplegangers be under less surveillance, it was getting weird for her to just stand idle by.

"How can I be of assistance?" she asks while looking around to assess the situation in the archive. There had been some talk about finding a way to connect the thing Aurin-Ah was fabricating.

So they did ... I misunderstood. In reading it back it does appear that the Captain Cole offered to let us send ourselves back first. Initially I took that to mean that their doctor M'Ress could send us back first if that was our desire.

So ... do we use the hour given and continue with replicating and studying the headset and device for our records should future Starfleet vessels get pulled in? Or other ideas?

Sep 26, 2024 6:41 pm
Using the tools at hand, over the next half hour the crew secretly replicates several new headsets. Connecting the headsets to the archives, the Custodian walks you through restoring the alien material to their home universes that were brought here through the rift explosion. First on your list is the doppelgangers.

The Custodian helps you identify the asteroid material that was sucked in, then together you work to send that back. After that, and you have learned something of what it takes, you begin the more careful chore of sending the other crew back, fitting them safely inside their Raven, along with their weapons and power conduits, then flitting them back through the rift with the last material. They're none the wiser, and might be a bit shocked at what happened, but they're as far away from you as anyone can be, sequestered in a parallel universe.

With that task complete, you can ease the rest of the rocky material in the Pinicon Belt back to their origins. In this way, you restore the balance in the rift, to ensure that the rupture can be repaired. When it's all but done, you can attempt your own return.

Any orders for the Custodian once the damage had been repaired?
Sep 26, 2024 7:17 pm
Drake suggests rather emphatically that the apparatus and the helmet are too powerful.

"We should destroy anything that has to do with this. In the wrong hands it would be ... well we already know what the doppelgangers had planned."
Sep 26, 2024 8:19 pm
Cole's mood brightened considerably as his team of officers carefully and discreetly crafted a number of headsets and quickly and efficiently - with the station's accommodating AI's assistance - began the process of moving the displaced materials of the Belt back to their origins before finally sending their counterparts back to their own reality. Beaming, he offered the crew congratulatory praise for their efforts. Towards the Ensign's suggestion, Cole's eyes narrowed slightly in thought, "While I firmly agree Ensign there is a danger of the wrong people using this station to the wrong ends - particularly now that at least one set of our counterparts knows of its existent and its capabilities - I'm reluctant to destroy anything less we strand someone or a group of some ones

"Aurin, how confident are you that we will be able to seal the rift? And your belief on how permanent that will remain?"
Sep 26, 2024 9:02 pm
"I agree with the XO. It is a powerful device but it is not in the wrong hands it is in our hands. Star Fleet hands. And can be used for good or rescue if something like this happens again. It would be foolish to destroy it." Luna chips in. She don't see the problem Drake sees. They are the real Star Fleet, the good guys.
Sep 26, 2024 9:45 pm
I do worry...the wrong people could find it. Any of the groups with beef against Star fleet....but destroying it isn't the answer either. Some kind of protection maybe?

"A safety. A system that allow the apparatus to only repair rifts but not create new ones. The apparatus should be permitted to only restore balance and maintain dimensional equilibrium. But how? I have a sense of the complexities of its neural network, we could engineer a prompt that would be difficult or impossible for any others interacting with the device to bypass. Any thoughts on 'hardwiring' that into a headset Aurin?"

Drake hadn't thought about the possibility of stranding anyone, but he disagreed with Luna. It was very naive to think that every single Star Fleet member was above the temptation of such enormous power.

"I respectfully disagree that we can trust everyone at Starfleet. But I don't mean this to sound disloyal. Anyone can succumb to temptation when the idea of wielding so much power is possible. However, the idea of protecting it, or disabling it such that it can only be used to repair rifts is an excellent idea if it can be done."

Aurin sat, hands folded. His crew was counting on his judgement, but the issue was... unspeakably complex. And, furthermore, not in his field. But he needed to make a call, for his own sake, and to let his crew interpret his professional opinion. His brow furrowed deeply as he contemplated, and finally shook his head.

"This device isn't native to our universe." He looked up at the others. "It could contain exotic materials. Foreign technologies. It could be operating on laws of physics that don't apply to matter in our universe."

"In this case, I think we must respect the Prime Directive, even if our role is reversed from... our usual, privileged position. Just as we wouldn't hand a phaser to a bronze age hunter gatherer, we should be reluctant to grasp whatever this is. Until our society and technology has advanced to such a point that we can understand it thoroughly enough to reproduce it and grapple with the consequences of its use, and contain the damage it might cause of our own accord, I think we should surrender it. Send it back where it came from."

He looked around the room, gauging the others' reaction to his assessment.

I would agree...but how do we achieve that without stranding one of our own?

"We can ask it to try. Perhaps it can displace both us and itself simultaneously. Perhaps it can temporarily open a portal from its universe to ours that the pilot can pass through."

Aurin shook his head. "This machine's nuanced capabilities are so... so far beyond my expertise. Multiple universe theory, quantum probability oscillation, trans-universal wormholes - these are all the things of very, very speculative papers in obscure journals. Some graduate student at the Daystrom institute will earn his PhD on the sensor data we bring back to the Christa alone."

He spread his hands, helplessly. "The machine has claimed to be able to completely erase the Borg from a universe. Using the energy output of a Type III Ship's phaser for a few minutes. If that's true, the implications represent computational precision of unfathomable degree through some sort of... unknown cascade effect, or the dismantling of all of the science of thermodynamics as we know it. Or that energy crystal in the reactor is so impossibly volatile that it poses a threat to the whole sector if it becomes unstable."

He paused for a moment, letting it sink in that they had shot a shipborne phaser at that same crystal, believing it to be safe.

He realized he had been rambling. The stress of the whole operation, all of the scientific and ethical implications that had been boiling in his mind, the dangers he had tried to navigate them around without causing any kind of panic, moral or otherwise, had put a seam in his usually receptive exterior. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to say we shouldn't act, or can't act, but... the safest course of action, the course that presents an acceptable risk, is to operate the machine as it appears to be designed, and to hope it understands our needs, and can perform the tasks we require of it, and deal with the consequences as best we are able."

Cole listened to his science officer's assessment, thoughtfully considering Aurin's words as they echoed what he himself had been thinking. Better to just leave things as is than attempt to get 'cute' with things. Finally, with a decisive nod he addressed the team, "Sounds like the most pertinent course of action is to do what we need to to get the apparatus to send us back to our quantum reality and leave everything else as is.

"Doc. Aurin. Jayce. Continue to work with the AI to make that happen.

"Luna. Drake. With me. Let's make sure we are not leaving anything of ours behind and destroy anything that our counterparts might have as I wouldn't want them to somehow track their stuff back to here and complete their mission."

"Yes Commander." While he didn't agree with all of it, he had said his piece and had to move on and do what was required.

She clearly looks worried, but nods. Of course

Luna didn't like the idea of letting the powerful device slip out of their grasp but the others seemed to agree on it. Clearing out the station and making sure not to leave traces was however a very good idea in either case, so Luna immediately started following Cole's order.

Using the station and your tricorders, you track down any material that resonates with your universes subspace frequency, and ensure it's all stowed on the Raven. When you're confident that is the case, it's time to return to your own universe and your Pinicon Belt. Time will have passed simultaneously you understand, so hopefully the USS Christa McAuliffe hasn't panicked too much over your lack of communication.

With one of you in a charged environment suit operating the headset, and the rest of you aboard the runabout, you're ready to go.

Carefully stowing aboard anything that came from their own reality Cole took his seat next to Luna, thankful to finally be out of the environmental suit.

"Lieutenant Ah. Take us home if you would."

Aurin, having suggested the risky course of action, volunteers to operate the device and hopefully return to the Raven once the process is complete, not wanting to put others in danger in the face of his own inability to devise a more elegant solution. Once the runabout is clear, he instructs the device to depart without him - or, failing that, to depart and then project him back to his native quantum reality...

CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 45665.7
While enroute to the nanotechnology ethics summit on Gnycish 2, Starfleet Command had ordered us to investigate the Pinicon Belt, one of the densest asteroid fields ever encountered. Commander Walker and I used this as an opportunity to evaluate several crewmembers for whom performance evaluations were due, and selected an away team.

The team investigated the field with a runabout and were drawn through a vortex into a parallel universe. There they encountered another crew from an universe nearly overrun by the Borg. Most disturbing, these crewmembers were nigh exact duplicates of themselves, their personalities somewhat altered from this other life.

After finding an alien space station, the apparent cause of the breach between realities. The two crews worked together in finest Starfleet tradition and managed to interface with the alien technology, and repair the rift in the other universe sending all rogue matter back to their home realities. The other crew was then sent back unawares, as my crew suspected that they would endeavor to use the station to alter the balance of power in their galaxy. While eliminating the Borg would likely save billions of lives, the station's artificial intelligence warned them that would result in a profound cascading effect across all realities, a risk that could not consciously be borne in accordance with the Prime Directive.

Successfully sealing the breach, they've now returned to the ship and we continue on our way to Gnycish 2 where they will hopefully have the chance for much deserved shore leave.
