Jayce who intentionally attempted to maintain his composure during the hurried disembark, says to Doctor M'Ress, "Well, It seems we won't have a chance to study the quantum anomaly from within. But at least we haven't come in contact with any contaminates."

A small smile quirks her lips Are you certain Councilor? She then shivers. This is not a good place. I'm happy to be away from it

While they couldn't be certain, Drake was never-the-less mildly disappointed that they made no contact with other lifeforms. Hopefully, nothing deadly hitched a ride on the crew unbeknownst to them.

"As we will be soon, Doctor," he says, hoping to reassure her.

The second the last person was back on the Raven, Luna fires up the runabout, makes a quick 180 and moves the craft away from the mirror ship as fast as the asteroid belt allows.
OOC:
Spending 1 momentum to get us to safety. Focus for piloting.
Edit: two momentum back to the bank.
Once at a safe distance of the exploding ship, she asks "What are your orders, XO? Are we going further into the Belt?"
OOC:
That question is for everyone

Rolls

Conn 4 + control 11 = 15 - (3d20)

(2612) = 20

The hiss of atmosphere as he unsecured his helmet filled the bridge of the craft, as he peeled it away, setting it on the floor with an undignified thump as he approached the console he had configured for his use. He unsealed the gloves, tossing them aside, his talons tapping over the LCARS, trying to get a reading on the shuttle. He was uncharacteristically taciturn, focused on the readouts.

The core had been minutes from going critical. How could he have possibly missed it? Part of him wanted to blame the interference from the belt, but a pit in his gut told him it was a pitiful excuse.

The inertial dampeners struggled to compensate for Lieutenant Vilchis's heroics as the young pilot wasted little time in moving them away from the deteriorating shuttle, a grim set to Cole's jaw as he watched the mirror Raven explode in the viewscreen, a vivid example of their own potential fate. Luna's question tore him from his morbid thoughts, "Yes, Lieutenant. Take is in --- we still need those samples and readings."

Following Aurin's example, Cole too shed his environmental suit and with just as little fanfare, and watched the science officer busily work at the computer console. Thoughts Lieutenant?," he asked, stepping to the Aurelian's side.
Apr 2, 2024 12:47 am
"I..." Aurion paused, leaning back in his seat, pressing the tips of his fingers to his forehead, eyes closing tightly. "I am sorry, Sir. I don't know how I could have missed that. The sensors should have told me there was some issue with the core."
Apr 2, 2024 10:45 am
"I'll take us further in and find a good spot to retrieve samples, sir" Luna presses a few buttons on the control and sets a course further into the asteroid belt.
OOC:
Spending one point of momentum for this task

OOC:
@qralloq - Would we be able to utilize 'Success at a Cost'? Assuming of course that @Stefron is okay accepting a complication?

Or not because a Momentum was spent on the roll?

Or does anyone else have any other thoughts to add?

SUCCESS AT COST
Some Tasks can’t really be failed outright; rather, there is
uncertainty as to whether the Task can be completed without
problems. In such a situation, the Gamemaster may allow
characters to Succeed at a Cost, either stating this before
the Task is attempted, or providing the option after the dice
have been rolled. If this option is provided, then a failed
Task still allows the Task to be successful but the character
also suffers one automatic Complication, in addition to any
caused by 20s being rolled. These Complications function
exactly as those generated by rolling a 20, including being
able to trade them for 2 points of Threat, or using them to
create other effects.

Though the Task has technically been successful, Momentum
cannot be spent to improve the outcome of a Task that
has succeeded at a cost: Momentum can only be spent
if the Task was truly successful. In some cases, the ‘cost’
can be increased further, at the Gamemaster’s discretion,
causing the character to suffer more than one automatic
Complication on a failed Task. This should be made clear
when the option to succeed at cost is presented.

Also, May Devar have noticed Vilchis succumbing to the overwhelming fast paced stress of the moment and step in to offer some words (which I could RP). In that case he could roll Command + Insight as an assist which would allow him to judge the mood and morale of the lieutenant and assuage her fears. This combined with Devar's Advisor Talent: "Whenever you assist another character using your Command Discipline, the character being assisted may re-roll one d20." would give Vilchis a re-roll????

"Let me double check the sensors," Drake says, agreeing that it was odd that the scans picked nothing up.

"Running diagnostics and checking the shield charges as well."

OOC:
Actually, I misread the previous posts. The urgency of going back in is not really there to make my previous idea viable. Forget the proposal.

OOC:
If there is the option to succeed at a cost, that's fine by me to have a complication to avoid hitting an asteroid or whatever failing that roll means.

If it too late to have an assist from a navigator?
Apr 2, 2024 7:37 pm
OOC:
The primary roll needs to have a Success before an Assist can be rolled unfortunately :-(
Apr 3, 2024 12:41 am
I'll show Success at a Cost. @Stefron, choose whether to add two Threat or the next piloting check will have +1 Difficulty for a deteriorating mental situation as you fly into the thicker heart of the asteroids. In your post, describe how Luna is losing her nerve.

@Seck, Jayce can assist Luna on this complication. If you want to make a counseling check, you can attempt to remove Luna's stress. Difficulty 1 on that.

OOC:
Okay. I'll give it a shot.
Jayce senses potential stress mounting in Lieutenant Vilchis after being called on her expertise to get the craft safely back into the dangerous belt following the intensity of the emergency departure away from the previous explosion. He hopes to calm her so she may focus.

"Lieutenant...Luna." he looks earnestly, directly at her. "You promptly and safely got us into the belt, and just as promptly navigated us away from danger. I have confidence, as we all do, that you are quite able to navigate further in there and find a good spot for us to retrieve samples. There are no other hands at the conn that could make us safer than yours."

Rolls

Devar: Assist Luna (Command 5 + Insight 11 = 16) - (1d20)

(14) = 14

Apr 3, 2024 1:57 am
Excellent. Luna is distraught by the white knuckle flying but gets you there, and Jayce makes sure Luna's confidence isn't shot by the large number of near misses.

Cole gripped Aurin's shoulder, giving it a small comforting squeeze before slapping the science officer on the back with a confident pat, "Seems like you got everything out of the sensors you could just to confirm that what we were seeing was in fact a shuttle --- with all this interference it seems a wonder you got that.

"So good work."

He offered Ensign Zarah an appraising smile, pleased with the young man's initiative as he offered to run diagnostics. Eyes narrowing, brow furrowed his gaze shifted to his pilot, he usual confident response somewhat subdued, her movements less sure than typical. Perhaps sensing Luna's unease as well, Jayce moved to the adjacent seat, offering comforting words as he helped the young woman navigate her doubts even as she navigated the dangers of the shifting, rocking debris field.

Nodding a short, confident and approving nod of his head to Luna he then directed his attention to the rest of the team, "I don't know about y'all but I've had about enough fun for today. Let's get the samples we need and be on our way.

"Lieutenant Ah. What do you need us to do?

"Doctor M'Ress. Be ready to confirm anything we bring aboard is safe for transport and offloading on the Christa."

That asteroid nearly hit us and I hadn't seen it. Luna realize with a start as a large C-type asteroid passes inches from the Raven.
It wasn't the danger of the asteroid belt that threw her off balance, it was that she hadn't seen the danger. At all. Am I really a sloppy pilot? Totally unfit for the task? she wonders.

Then Lieutenant Devar starts talking to her. His word calms her some. "Thank you, Lieutenant." He is right anyone could have missed that rock.
Her focus and composure returns and she stays extra alert for small, dark C-type asteroids.
OOC:
Did Seck's roll resolve the complication. If not, I'll take the two points of Threat.
Apr 4, 2024 2:43 am
OOC:
Yes, the complication was managed. No need for the Threat
Luna banks and plots her way through the chaotic mess. The asteroids tumble without the usual orderliness of an old belt. It's as if this one had been disturbed and still trying to find it's equilibrium.

Traveling into the heart of the Pinicon Belt puts the away team in position to collect the three asteroid samples required by Starfleet for in-depth research. However, the quantum interference continues to increase, and prevent the transporters from being of much use in extracting samples.

It's with some reputation that you realize one or more members of the away team will have to drill for the samples by hand. This is a three-step process that will require an officer to move into close proximity with an asteroid, identify a suitable chunk of rock with a tricorder, then extract the sample with a hand drill. The person attempting to do so will have to wear an EV suit, exit the shuttlecraft through an airlock and drift to the asteroid.
