The steps themselves are fine, but your magehand is suddenly blown away by a deeply-resounding roar of subsonic force that sets your teeth on edge. It seems your instincts are at least partially right, but was it Fallowcrest or S'sylin? Where is he, anyway?

Not with the others, that's for sure!

That was unpleasant. She tries again, but further away. Was it a one-time trap or is it a permanent fixture?

It happens again, so it seems to be something that's permanent - or at least quasi-permanent. You can't help but notice that it wasn't like this before you found the secret door.

Guys!
We are being trapped here!

Astrid graps a book about Elven history and one about witchcraft magic.

She calls out to Turchuk and Verin. Lets find S'sylin and see if he has found something. And grab any book you want to carry. This is a setup, a trap for some unkonwn reason. I don't want to be here anymore.

"Trapped?!? No, that won't do." Turchuk puts down the book he was examining, gathers up his staff and pack, and moves to the location of the hidden door, attempting to find it again.

"But we have books... this seems like a pretty nice trap," Verin says with a shrug. "Although I suppose eventually I'll get hungry, so there's that." The little tiefling sighs and looks around, hoping to find a book on the history of Stormreach. Also, maybe a primer on magic. Oh, and a guide to languages. And a tome on mechanical devices (like locks). And... oh, wait. Right. Hidden door.

Verin packs the books she's able to find in her ruck and shoulders it, moving over to the hidden door. She looks back at all the books and sighs sadly as she draws her blade and prepares to follow the big guy.

The secret door is easy enough to find again. The question is, do you go through?

Turchuk squares his shoulders and steps through the illusion.

Amber makes stows her stolen books, so her hands are free and follows Turchuk through the illusionary door.

As S'sylin prepares to go down the passage, he hears the trap activate from the main room.

When Turchuk, Astrid and Verin step through, they have just enough time to see dank and musty stone walls with moss growing in the cracks and water seeping in gradually through the stone ceiling. Every ten feet or so, a bookshelf sits, full of tomes that are not only chained to the shelf, but also locked in the same way the front door was. One book that seems grander than the rest, sits open in the middle of the room on a pedestal. Gold fillagree and illumination cover the pages, but the finery is faked.

Then the air is filled with a mind-ripping cacophony.

She is pretty banged up, with 3 hp left, she has to resist it - She did :D
Astrid clams her hands around her head. All this noise, but where is it coming from? She looks around to see the cause in the hope of preventing any more head-splitting booms.

Sorry, when I posted she "prepares to follow the big guy," I did mean that when Turchuck went through the door Verin was following him.

I'll fix that!

Rolling his eyes, S'sylin sighed. Could he just leave these bumbling primates behind and press on? No... no... he knew they would cause him more trouble if he did due to the lack of his presence to steer the simians right. Thus with a heavy heart he returned the way he came, emerging in the room from the opposite end of the grand book.
"A marching band makes less noise falling down a flight of a thousand steps than you do in this library!"

Calm your scales! This place is filled with sonic traps. The stairs we down at, is also trapped. Didn't you hear that before?

We. Have. Been. Set. Up!

Hopefully S'sylin gets that this is no longer a university favor, but an attempt to kill them.

After the trap quiets itself and there is a bit of calm, you're confronted with a small-to-middling sized room here with books all around, carefully placed on pedestals, and a long hallway leading off to the right. As S'sylin could tell you, it finally dead ends after about a hundred and a half feet or so at a T junction. From one branch of the junction comes the clunk of heavy machinery and from the other, the sparking of something electrical.

It's impossible, however, to take a step - unless you walk in S'sylin's already prepared footsteps - without disturbing the dust on the floor. Whatever is down here, it was clearly set up far in advance of your arrival.
