As Adran and any other PCs leap, grab onto the carriage, and climb up, the carriage jounces and the driver falls away.

Anyone on the carriage who wishes to take control of the team should attempt a WIS Animal Handling check with DISADV to take the reins and steer the team to a stop before it runs over anyone else or crashes.
OOC:
If you haven't taken an action after the dodge, you can try to jump aboard (DC10 Athletics).
Then, if you're successful, you can attempt the Animal Handling check with DISADV (DC12).

Seeing the driver fall away before Adran can pull him up, Adran takes a moment to appeal to higher powers and then grabs the reigns to try and stop the horses.
OOC:
Action is casting Guidance, the next action is drawing on the inspiration of a bard while hoping to stop the wagon.

Yep... that tracks.

Morik reached out to attempt to get on the wagon, felt a tightening on his back, and decided to let more athletic folks attempt it instead.

In a moment of sheer panic, seeing no strides being made in slowing the runaway cart, Eozindra throws herself at the carriage, knowing full well that she will not have the physicality to do much but get in the way.
OOC:
Yeah I knew it wouldn't work. Some people about to die by horse trample.

ROUND ONE
OOC:
Initiative is not important at this stage, but I will track the event in rounds both because there is a time element and to keep track of PCs' actions.
Something panics the horses, and they begin their frantic charge, careening the fancy carriage they are drawing through the crowds just inside the eastern gates of Grayhaven. The driver, caught by surprise, is flung backwards when the team leaps forward, and barely manages to catch himself on the side. Someone inside the carriage yells with alarm. Findal, Eozindra, Elysia, Morik, and Bramlin each get battered by hooves as they leap clear, but Adran and Elowin clear out of the way with no damage. In the split-second after the horses pass, several party members heroically leap to grab onto the carriage. Adran manages to catch the carriage and hauls himself aboard; Bramlin tries to grab the carriage as well. His outstretched hand hooks onto some elaborate scrollwork and he is yanked off of his feet, too. Adran and Bramlin get themselves secure, then turn to help the driver, but the jounce as the carriage strikes another pedestrian dislodges the man, leaving the artificer and fighter alone on the buckboard, trying to take control of the team before it crashes. The crystal-clear voice of the albino half-elf Eozindra rings out with encouragement for Adran - "You can stop this!" - granting the artificer bardic inspiration.

Rolls

Bramlin's attempt to leap aboard DC10 - (1d20+6)

BEGINNING OF ROUND TWO

Adran draws upon his own magic (casting Guidance) and Eozindra's music to aid him as he grabs the reins and attempts to gain control of the team, but an astonishingly bad roll means that the reins are yanked back out of his hands. The frantic horses are bucking and leaping so much that the tongue of the harness threatens to snap. The edge of the carriage clips a seafood vendor's stall, smashing the wooden frame and sending various shellfish spilling out onto the street as several buckets are upended. Bramlin is going to make a grab for the reins, too. What are the rest of you doing?
OOC:
Adran and Bramlin are aboard the vehicle, which is now 60' away from the rest of the party. Everyone in the party can see that, if the carriage isn't stopped before then, it will crash into something at the end of round three: the horses are charging toward various buildings at the edge of the plaza.
Apr 2, 2024 7:11 pm
Adran will grab hold and lean forward to try and get the reigns back as well, hoping that if he and Bramlin work together they can stop this damnable carriage. To that end he will be whatever help he can be.

Bram reaches his hands outward. Trying to grab at the runaway coach!
Stop, he exclaims instinctively!

ROUND TWO COMPLETED

Bramlin reaches for the reins as Adran drops them, but the horses do not mind his command!
OOC:
Getting control of the horses is an Animal Handling check, not Athletics. But the 5 will still fall short, as Bramlin's skill in Animal Handling is a +2.
Eozindra sprints after the carriage and sings to inspire Bramlin, too. Morik jumps in the air as a dwarf and lands as a horse, galloping after the crazed team. As an unladen equine, he is able to catch up to the horses hitched to the vehicle, but his first attempt to model calmness to them is unsuccessful.

ROUND THREE BEGINS
The person inside the carriage yells again: "WHAT'S HAPPENING?!" The whinnying, out of control horses knock one of the bravos to the ground, and he lays where he fell, out cold. Adran gets his hands on the reins to assist Bramlin, the two of them pulling together to try to get the horses to stop or at least steer away from the wall.
OOC:
Adran is using the Help action, which will provide ADV to counteract the DISADV from the panicked horses; if Bramlin chooses to roll an Animal Handling check, he will roll it as a straight 1d20+2 (and can choose to add the Bardic Inspiration die granted by Eozindra, 1d6). Morik is in the form of a horse, and may be able to communicate calm to the "fellow" horses (also Animal Handling). The DC is 12.
What do you each do?

Rolls

4th roll of 4 - (1d6)

"The driver was thrown when the horses spooked! We're trying to stop them before more people are hurt!" Adran can't be too worried about the passenger though, the horses seem to be a more immediate concern.
Apr 2, 2024 11:06 pm
Falling short of the carriage, Eozindra presses her palms to the sides of her face in a moment of overwhelmed frustration. She frantically looks around for some method of stopping the carriage. Seeing nothing useful, she sprints after the runaway vehicle as fast as her legs can carry her and calls out again to the individuals attempting to slow the panicked horses, "Now! Now! Slow them down!"
OOC:
Aghhh I am so useless in this situation!

Using action to dash (30ft normal speed up to 60) and try to keep pace with this hot mess, inspiration dice for Bramlin this time: 1d6
Apr 3, 2024 12:23 am
Morik's eyes widened in alarm as he saw what's in the path of the carriage, and the accident that would occur if the horses didn't stop in time. He muttered a spell for some guidance, and then with uncharacteristic spryness, he leapt and transformed into a riding horse.

Later on, he'd recall that it was the first time he'd done it. The ability had been there for a while, just at the edge of his mind, but now came the time to do it, his mind reacted on instinct and just did it. It was quick, too quick to have felt any of the pain, though bruising and soreness would likely appear. But at the time, he thought of none of these things as he charged straight for the panicked horses.
OOC:
I don't think Morik got his turn in round 2. Can he use that round to Wild Shape into a riding horse (bonus action) to catch up? Can he use Animal Handling in riding horse form? If not, he'll need round 3 to transform back to normal form, and attempt it then.

EDIT: Good gods, will I ever roll high?

OK, I've updated the round two description to include Eozindra's sprint and Morik's transformation and first attempt to calm the horses.

Adran is on the runaway carriage, using his action on round 3 to help Bramlin.
Bramlin is on the runaway carriage, and hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.
Elowin is in the plaza with Findal and Elysia. She hasn't declared an action for round 2 or 3 yet.
Elysia is in the plaza with Findal and Elowin. She hasn't declared an action for round 2 or 3 yet.
Eozindra has just caught up to the runaway carriage, sprinting. She hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.
Morik is galloping next to the team of horses in horse form himself. He hasn't declared an action for round 3 yet.

Declare your actions for rounds 2 and 3 if you haven't already. At the end of round 3, the carriage will crash as the horses run full tilt into the wall if not prevented.

Can Morik re-attempt Handle Animal? I’ll roll it here if he’s allowed. If not, I’ll update the post with something else.
It was strange trying to calm horses while being a horse himself. There was a foreign element to it, and something must’ve been lost in the translation, but the end was fast approaching, and he gave it another shot.
OOC:
Urrrrrgh, druids need to be given Advantage with Animal Handling darn it lol

Redamancy says:
I thought dashing would use my action? If not, I'll gladly try and do something else if I can
OOC:
Here's what I captured (correct me if I've missed something):
Start: Zin gets hit by the carriage.
Round one: Zin tries to catch the carriage (action), misses, and uses her bonus action to give inspiration to Adran. She doesn't move.
Round two: Zin runs after the carriage (move), dashes (action), and gives inspiration to Bramlin (bonus action).
Round three: ...?
grifter730 says:
Can Morik re-attempt Handle Animal? ... druids need to be given Advantage with Animal Handling darn it lol
OOC:
Yes, in this situation, characters can retry the same skill checks. We're rolling because there's a time element.
I figured that, as a horse, Morik would have ADV...which is counteracting the DISADV of the horses' complete panic.
Apr 3, 2024 12:17 pm
Are you hurt mister Findal?
Apart from filling the horses with arrows, Elowin have very few options to mitigate the situation - so she sticks to the task they were originally giving. Escorting Findal to his friend and bring the box to the Duke.

Round 2:

Elysia can't feel surprise at seeing Zin take off after the carriage. Now that she could, it wasn't strange to see the pale girl going everywhere she could. Without hesitation, she dashed after her, both refusing to let her go into a possibly dangerous situation alone and wanting to help any way she can. As she chased after the runaway carriage, she screamed out to the person inside, "You need to jump! Vacate the carriage!"
OOC:
I have a crazy idea for round three if the person doesn't jump. I feel like wanting to leap onto it and pull the person out before disaster could happen would require them to know where the person in the vehicle is so could I roll an acrobatics to leap inside to protect whoever is in there in the case of a crash?
Imma add a roll just in case the answer is yes. If I can't get around to checking the forum again for another day, I don't want to hold anyone up.
