Chapter One: Bones and Ashes

It seems to me this problem resolves itself soon enough. Three days from now send a larger force down to make sure they are ghouls of their word and left.

"Peaceful perhaps but for how long? As I asked Wulgar, what happens if a worker or a child entered their tunnels? Would they let them go free? Or would they do anything to keep their secret? I'm not in favor of leaving any undead nearby, that's sacrificing the future for misplaced mercy. It's cowardly and serves evil."

She blushes after the long monologue, and apologizes with her eyes to her mentor, Zantus.

"Win has it right, but I think so does Sir Perf - they cannot be allowed to remain, 'tis too dangerous, but Jathus has a feeling they will no longer be there in a few days. Let them leave, and make sure the caverns are clear of any danger thereafter. Letting them leave in peace is the least we could do, for them allowing us safe passage, I am thinking."

Abstalar Zantus
Zantus nods, "That sounds reasonable. We can send some of the town guard down in a few days to ensure that they have vacated," he agrees easily, then shrugs off Winona's apologetic look with a grandfatherly smile.

"I hate to ask for more, but it sounds like there's more to see down there?" he asks, then hesitates before continuing, "Would you mind going back down to see what else is there?"

Winona is happy to do so, after a proper rest, and says so. "I can be ready tomorrow. I'd like to consult with Gozreh on what he wants me to do and what strength he can lend us."

"And I'd like a few drinks," Jathus adds with a wry smile, "Courage, Jathus does not need, but drink and rest are never to be shunned."

Abstalar Zantus
Father Zantus looks slightly abashed, "Of course you should rest! I didn't mean to imply that you return immediately," he says, patting the air apologetically, "I will have the sheriff place guards around the gravesite so that nothing comes crawling out while the town sleeps."
Jul 16, 2024 8:39 am
"Good plan, Father," Jathus says with a stretch. "Who's in for a drink before we settle in for the night?"
Jul 16, 2024 10:51 am
Perf takes Jathus up to his offer.

While they are out and Perf is tipsy for the first time in his life he asks Jathus a question that's been bothering him since they returned to the surface. If towns are so concerned with ghouls in their graveyards then why don't they just cremate their dead? I don't think ghouls can survive on pyre ashes.

Winona can't speak for all religious beliefs but says, "The Gods require us to treat the dead according to their customs . We honor them by obeisance. Here in Sandpoint ours is the custom to bury. In other places they are burned or left for the animals, or consigned to the depths of the sea."

Jathus tips back his drink, earnestly considering Sir's question as Win chimes in. "Couldn't have said it better myself," he says, swirling the contents of his cup. "It is just how it is done, no? Go tryin' to change such a thing, people would get upset. I'm sure if the ghoul problem was serious enough, an appeal could be made." He shrugs. "I suppose you are right, though - probably far fewer ghouls in places that burn their dead." Jathus cocks his head and looks off into the distance for a moment, considering the thought, then takes another drink.

Perf considers this and states the following before deciding to excuse himself for the night. It seems to me then that if that's the cultural norm for good reason the ghouls aren't doing anything wrong. The bodies buried will be eaten by bugs and other such pests given enough time. The problem then with ghouls is that they don't wait for their meal to be forgotten by us. I see them as part of our cycle on this plane.

"Hmm, I am thinking the concern more so lies in the fact they sometimes do not wait for their meals to be dead before making them so," Jathus says, "Though, these ones we encountered below seemed far more amiable than those in the tales I heard as a child. Perhaps the stories are not all correct."

The night passes by with good drinks and good company. You wake the following morning ready to go check out the rest of the caves below Sandpoint.

The tunnels are the same as they were when you left them the day before. You have two possibilities: northwest or else the barricaded area in the northwest corner of A3.

Jathus makes his way toward the barricaded passage. "I, for one, am curious what lies behind here," he says as he begins to pull away the blockade.

You begin tearing down the barricade, revealing a chamber beyond. The walls of this cave and its timber supports bear scorch marks, while the charred bodies of three goblins lie sprawled on the floor. To the west, a partially dug out alcove has revealed a flagstone wall with a narrow crack that opens into another chamber, within which a faint fiery radiance flickers.

???
Before you can tear it down too much, a burned goblin face peers through the timbers at you, "Stop! Stop! You’ll angry up the fire monster!" he whispers to you. This is clearly one of the goblin ghouls, but he looks more terrified than threatening at this point.

"Fire monster? We are not afraid of such things," Jathus says with a smirk. "Perhaps you'd like to be rid of this place? Your brethren are destroyed, the other ghouls have fled. I recommend you do the same, and find a home away from Sandpoint, if you value what life you have." Jathus steps to the side and gestures with his Kukri.

Firemosnter? What sort? Shirt, tall, smoking?' [/b] Zan peers from behind Jathus. 'Also, what he said.'

Perf perks up, Oh, that sounds interesting. I'm curious if it is natural or arcane in nature. Can you lead us there to take a look?

Winona's trident glints in the subterranean light. "Tell us about the fire monster. We can help." She's not lying but she also isn't ready to let this wounded ghoul go.
