OOC:
Yes, that's a hard success. You can drop 4 points of luck for an extreme and extra damage?
May 18, 2024 2:02 pm
OOC:
yes, I'll use 4 luck. Thanks for the reminder.

With its arms pinned by Jack, George leaps in and stabs the Gardiner-thing in the head. There is no flash of blue and the blade of the kitchen knife is buried in the skull, right to the handle. The light goes out of Gardiner's eyes. blood bubbles from its mouth and the thing goes slack in Jack's arms.
May 18, 2024 10:45 pm
George sinks to the floor, adreneline coursing through his veins and cold sweat on the back of his neck.

"...and STAY dead this time..." he says between heavy breaths.
May 19, 2024 1:46 am
Jack lays Gardiner down gently but also as fast as possible, and then leans on the bookcase to catch his breath. "Good one, George. Everybody okay?"
May 20, 2024 5:18 pm
Nora, still breathing heavy and feeling the fear and anxiety of what just happened, does a quick inventory. Her knee is bothering her, but that's normal. However, her hands trembling and her headache are new, though not worrisome and perhaps expected.
"I am....well not fine, but not hurt. What was that? Was Mr. Gardiner somehow alive and driven mad by his injuries?"
May 21, 2024 4:19 am
"I don’t think madness would cause him to glow… but I won’t be the one to claim he was undead. Officer Grey, have you ever seen anything like this before?"
May 23, 2024 8:12 pm
Officer Grey lowers his gun, "What the hell was that?"
May 23, 2024 8:22 pm
Officer Grey allows you all to take what you need from the room in exchange for allowing him to claim the case. George takes the ledgers and envelope of receipts and Grey hands him the note Nora found, no questions asked. Lettie gets her books and takes the Dream book too.

Over the following weeks, you piece together the truth of the situation. James Gardiner enjoyed a vivid and fantastical dream life but somehow lost his ability to dream. He sought occult solutions to regain his dreams and found a spell in a tome that he believed would open the way for his dreams to return.
Unfortunately, the spell and the book were cursed. Some strange entity from another world tricked Gardiner into performing the rituals he found in the tome. One prepared his body to become a vessel for the foul entity while the other led to his death, sending poor Gardiner’s soul into oblivion. His empty body could then be possessed by the entity—just as your investigators discovered.

Between Jack's attacks with the chair and George's heroic attack with the knife, you managed to kill the vessel, though this event may give you all your own bad dreams.
OOC:
Due to your timely actions, you can feel proud to have played your part in foiling the schemes of a monster from beyond. Your surviving investigators are each awarded 1D6 Sanity points. Well done! Perhaps this incident has changed your investigator. If there are dark and unwholesome things out there that wish to break into our world, will your steadfast investigator join the fight to stop them?

In addition, you get to roll against skills you used successfully without the aid of Luck or Push. Roll against each skill on 1d100 and if you fail, gain 1d10 on that skill.

Lettie: Occult
Jack: Throw, Spot Hidden, brawl
George: spot hidden, brawl
Nora: Brawl

Everyone can also make a similar improvement check on Luck

George folds the paperwork and puts it into Gardiner's ledger which he tucks under his arm. "Good luck explaining this one Officer Grey..are we going to face any consequences, legally speaking?

OOC:
Ooh! Bad luck George. You can also make an improvement check against your Luck for a chance of a +1d10
May 24, 2024 10:54 am
OOC:
Can you explain why you said bad luck? Did I need extreme successes?

Rolls

Luck Improvement - (1D100)

(23) = 23

OOC:
For an improvement roll, you need to fail the roll to get a reward, so if you roll under your skill you gain nothing. So essentially, the higher your skill, the harder it is to improve.

Jack hurries back to his room to shower and process what the group had just been through. Though he rarely has trouble sleeping, nightmares do tend to rock him awake over the next few weeks, especially as he and the rest uncover the truth about Mr. Gardiner.

(1) = 1

Throw - Improvement Check - (1d100)

(91) = 91

Spot Hidden - Improvement Check - (1d100)

(27) = 27

Brawl - Improvement Check - (1d100)

(21) = 21

Throw - Improvement - (1d10)

I had a lot of fun with this. Thanks for running it Knifesedgegames! I like this forum play by post format too.
It really opens the game up to anyone that can check in daily.

Thanks for joining us Braedan51! Not every game one Gamersplane expects daily posting, this one is set to that as I try to turn one over every two months. You can find plenty of games to join over at the Games Tavern for all kinds of genres.

I currently run three longform Call of Cthulhu campaigns that have gone on for years at this point and the players love it.
