Ma Shanks’ Boarding House

The boarding house is a three-story building, positioned at the edge of Federal Hill, near to the Italian neighborhood.
Prohibition is still in force, with the sale of alcohol illegal. The effects of the Depression are kicking in and everyone is hard pressed trying to make ends meet.
The boarding house is home to various immigrants to Rhode Island, as well as the landlord (one of the investigators) who cooks the meals and runs the place.
There is a kitchen, dining room, large parlor, and storage on the first (ground) floor. A basement has a place for doing laundry. The second floor has four guest rooms and a bathroom (accommodating three of the investigators, as well as one larger room shared by the Karosas family), while on the third floor are Ma Shanks’ rooms (the building’s owner), the Landlady’s room, James Gardiner’s room, and Mrs. Madeira’s room.

The year is 1931. You live in Providence, Rhode Island in Ma Shanks’ Boarding House. Times are tough. The Great Depression means that immigrants and long-time residents, including you, are experiencing hard times.
You have all gathered outside the room of Mr. James Gardiner, the residents along with a Beat Cop that the landlady flagged from the street.
Gardiner has not been seen for at least two days and everyone is getting concerned for his well-being. The Landlady rattles some keys, finding the one for Gardiner’s room.

Little Tommy sits at the top of the stairs to the upper floor, looking down through the bannister at what is going on.

George W. Bugbee entered the corridor partially to see what all the commotion was all about, but mostly to ask his noisy housemates to please keep it down (again), but his slim 5'-7" frame is hardly imposing. His brown hair is parted in the middle and swept back behind his ears. He has piercing, but cold gray eyes. He is wearing a one time expensive suit that has become shabby and threadbare (especially in the elbows).
Apr 6, 2024 4:00 am
Jack Karosas keeps to the back of the gathering crowd, taking care not to get in anyone’s way or attract attention, and looking more curious than concerned. He wears a white button down with the top two buttons undone and the sleeves rolled up, with dark gray dress pants and modest shoes. He stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall, built like someone who has done manual labor his whole life, with mid-length, lightly curly hair brushed to one side.
Apr 6, 2024 7:00 am
Nora Fontaine stands close to the landlady, showing impatient and eager, wanting to nose her way in and figure out what Mr. Gardiner has been up to. She's an older, German woman, but still has plenty of energy at 58 years old, even if her old joints nice a bit slower these days. Her Auburn hair is liberally streaked with grey, pulled back in a tight braided bun, and she is wearing a serviceable and expertly patched navy dress and sensible shoes. Eccentrically, she wears two different earrings, a star on the left and a lady bug on the right.
Apr 6, 2024 12:29 pm
The landlady is an dominant figure in the doorway, wide enough to form a blockade if she wanted to. Something the borders have likely experienced once she gets chattering away at a door, with no sign of escape around her. Rosana's Brazilian heritage is evident not only in the richly tan complexion of her skin, but also the lilt in her voice holding the slight accent she adopted from her immigrant parents. Her dress is simple, looking handmade with mauve and pink floral pattern fabric.

She holds her characteristic smile as she fumbles with the keyring, but the knit at her brow betrays a hesitancy, or perhaps concern. "Oh, this is all just nothing, I am sure. You know James, always keeping to himself most days. He is probably just- Ah. Here we go."

Rosana chuckles, looking to Nora with a quaint bobble of her head. "That's the key."

And she turns the key in the door, keeping the smile upon her face despite the nervousness the rest of her features show.
Apr 6, 2024 1:58 pm
Lettie is a young woman with a mop of curly red hair, dressed in a casual wool waistcoat and white shirt with matching pants. Her attire is worn but well cared for, with several buttons mismatched. She carries a book under one arm, and her green eyes are magnified slightly by the reading glasses she has forgotten to take off. Even standing on her tippy toes, she still cannot see much over the others. She curses her short stature and tries to wedge closer to the door. Her concern for her missing book is slowly draining from her mind as it is replaced with concern for her housemate and friend. As the door swings open, Lettie optimistically hopes to find James alive and well, simply busy with one of his projects. She glances in, trying not to let her anxiety get the better of her.
Apr 7, 2024 12:38 pm
From within comes the lingering smell of candles, long since burned out, and something sickly-sweet and copperlike. Looking in, you see it. Framed in the shafts of sunlight streaming through gaps in the curtains. A body!
The body is lying on a tarpaulin, stretched out on the floor. You can see blood. The man’s body and clothing are covered in blood. It looks as though he somehow fell over from a kneeling position. The body is wearing a green tweed coat and a brown sweater-vest—the clothes Mr. Gardiner usually wears. It must be Mr. Gardiner!
The scene is shocking. His head has been mutilated by knife cuts.

At first, Lettie didn’t realize what the strange odor was, at first, she thought maybe Mr. Gardiner had gone away and left some fruit out. She nudged her way to the front of the group to get a better look and the optimism faded like a cruel joke finally clicking in. It was the first body that Lettie had ever seen outside of the perfumed stage of a funeral home. Her stomach lurched and her breakfast came up in a violent splash, adding even more layers of odor to the room. She turned red, and apologized to the others, turning away from the scene.

She wiggled back out of the crowd instead and tried to get eyes on the kid. She looked up to the upper-floor bannister to see if he was still there. She did not want him to see this.

From his initial vantage point George cannot directly see the carnage before them, but the smell is a pretty good indication of what has been discovered. The sound of Ms. Hayes retching confirms his suspicions. He leans forward and is appalled by the brutality in which Mr. Gardiner has been dispatched.

"My God..." he mutters in shock, his mouth agape. "We have to call the police..." he says to no one in particular, his eyes remain fixed on Mr. Gardiner's corpse.

Standing taller than most in the crowd, Jack sees Mr. Gardiner almost immediately. He’s seen his fair share of gut-wrenching sights on the farm back home, but this is… gruesome. He says nothing, but his stomach turns and his eye twitches, and the next few breaths are closer to haggard gasps. When Jack finally settles his mind, his first thought is of his siblings. He thought moving them to this boarding house would keep them safer than being on the streets or in a tent city, could he really believe that now?

Nora, standing next the the landlady, has an unobstructed view of what is now the body of Mr. Gardiner. Perhaps for the first time, she is feeling the sting of regret of wanting to know, wanting to see, but the gruesomeness of this scene is something she still needs to make sense of. Nora's mind grasps at what may make sense of this, how to tell the story to herself and others. She steels her spine and her lips tighten into a solemn grimace.
"I never liked the look of him. He had the look of being about something unsavory. And here it is, about as unsavory as you can get."

Her eyes dart away from the scene to observe her fellow boarders and the landlady, curious to see if there are any odd reactions as well as to give herself the relief of not actively taking in the visuals though the sharp smell of blood still reached her, making her right eye twitch.

The landlady heard little Tommy's voice, as if a distant whisper. She heard the voices of those in the hall, but very little of their words registered. With brown eyes going wide, she lets out a shrieking wail. She presses her hands to the side of her face, quickly shaking her head as she stumbles forward, eyes watering. She stumbles forward shakily, approaching the body on uneven feet.

It was clear he was dead, but it did not stop her from getting down to her knees beside him, and reaching a hand out towards the body, as if debating on attempting to shake his shoulder. "James? J-James? Oh noo- Oh meu Deus. No, not this- This can't be."

Nora shakes her head, clasping her hands tightly in front of her to disguise their tremors.
"Mr. Gardiner is...was...a mystery. Two years he's lived here among us. In those two years, I've seen no visitors, no family. He's mentioned no one, but I've been hard pressed most days to get as much as 'how do you do' from the man."
Nora looks back into the room, and takes a shaky few steps through the doorway, curiously looking for indications in the space he lived in of who this man was. What photos has he placed? Is the place well maintained? Are the books or trinkets that give insight int Mr. Gardiner's life?

Everything is in order in the room, except for the body on the tarpaulin. There doesn’t appear to have been a fight in here. The furniture is upright and there are no bloody footprints. The only unusual trappings sit on the floor, in front of the corpse on the tarpaulin: a piece of blood-stained paper lies between two black candles, which have both burned down to their stubs.

Inside the room, going clockwise from the doorway, are: a wardrobe, bed, nightstand with lamp, an ornate bookcase that divides the room into two living areas, a window, a small table set in the corner (with two chairs and another lamp), a fancy upholstered chair, overhead cabinets built into one of the walls, and another table along the wall to the left of the door.

https://i.imgur.com/U2hL9rc.png

Rosana, kneeling beside Gardiner, realises he is definitely dead. There is a deep cut, freshly made, around the head, as if a knife has traced a spiral from the crown to the neck, his clothes are blood-soaked but the blood is dry suggesting it took place some days ago.

Nora is next into the room and looks around.

Lettie flags Tommy down and tells him that there is another nickel in store for him if he runs to find a police officer. "Send them to the boarding house, quick as they can," she tells the boy, before steeling herself to turn back to the scene. Seeing that a few of the others have entered the room gives Lettie the courage she needs to enter as well.

The first thing that Lettie notices are the black candles. She has read too many books on the occult to dismiss it. Black is not a common color for candles, nor is the floor a common place to light a candle. The color and placement of the candles reeks of occultism to her. That, combined with Gardiner's recent fixation on dreams, gives her a sick feeling of dread.

Knowing that the police may not understand or make this kind of connection, Lettie moves carefully through the room to get a closer look at the candles and the paper. She doesn't want to hinder an investigation, but she doesn't trust the police to take her concerns seriously. She attempts to discern what, if anything, is written on the paper and see if there are any other clues.
Apr 8, 2024 10:28 pm
The tarpaulin, candles, and piece of paper, as well as most of the rest of the room, are splattered with dried blood. Fortunately the waxed tarpaulin has protected a fine Oriental rug—meaning that the Landlady will not have to spend considerable time cleaning up the bloodstains!

The paper is blood stained and contains handwriting in Greek.

Leaving George to deal with the body, Jack and Lettie move into the bedroom side of the room, to look at the bookshelf.

The bookcase is finely carved and has glass fronted doors, either side of which are the busts of two flute-playing cherubs carved into the upright moldings that support the doors. There is a drawer at the bottom of the unit. All of the woodwork is detailed in intricate scroll work.

Most of the books appear to be on finance and banking, a few travel books for obscure places etc.

Looking about he spots a button hidden in the scroll work and pushing it reveals a secret compartment.

Inside he sees three books, something wrapped in silk cloth and an obsidian knife.

Lettie can't help herself, the situation is just so bizarre that it doesn't feel real, she continues investigating even though the cop has arrived and she should let him do his job. She isn't sure if she can trust the man, but he's here now and any more sneaking around could land her in trouble.

"Some sort of ritual," she says to James, thinking that maybe if she sounds confident enough, he won't laugh in her face. "There may be some answers in this journal?"

Jack's had about enough weirdness for now, and trouble with the law could jeopardize his family in a number of ways, so, for now at least, he's done with the snooping around. He heads towards the door and leans against the wall between it and the wardrobe, crossing his arms. "We all came in together. Nobody had heard from Mr. Gardiner in a few days, it became clear why as soon as Rosana opened the door."

One wouldn't be sure by looking if Nora's eyes were narrowed in judgement while she grimaced, or if the crinkled with an uncomfortable smile. "You know, you remind me of my son, Walter, Officer Gray. Always wanting to be the winner. I'll hold my peace for now. But something feels...off about this whole thing. Like there's more to it than meets the eye. I swear I've heard Mr. Gardiner reciting some strange poetry through the walls, but in no language I've yet heard. But again, maybe he was just desperate and down on his luck." Nora pulls our the letter detailing Mr. Gardiner's bank information and the ledger he was tasked to complete by Mr. Bugbee and hands it to Officer Grey.

Elated that I'm not being dragged off for questioning, I clean up my hands and forearms in the kitchen sink, "My lips are sealed offic....DETECTIVE Grey!"

"Poetry eh?" the officer slips the letter into a pocket as he looks at the journal, skimming through it for a few minutes, "Dreamlands..Looks like he was obsessed with something called the Dreamlands. He talks about it like its a place. Bar maybe? Not one I've heard of." he reads some more, "No, he talks about travelling there when he's asleep and was struggling to get there. Pages and pages of 'No dreams again'"

He flips through a few more pages, "He describes more deams and talks about meeting a 'powerful being' who promised him a path into the land of dream if certain rituals are performed. He also talks of 'the Tome' and says these dreams make it easier to understand. Any of you seen a 'Tome'," he glances paste Lettie and over at the bookshelf.

James is right, having a friend in the department could prove to be very helpful, especially if Konstantinas runs into any trouble with the speakeasy. Though he had hoped to check out the drawer on his own later, he says: "This is all over my head, but there’s a secret compartment in that drawer in the bookcase. It’s got a few books and some other things that don’t make much sense."
Apr 17, 2024 10:36 pm
"Show me," Officer Grey looks to the drawer Jack indicates who presses the button , flipping open the false bottom.

Reaching in he pulls out a book, Primer in Greek Vocabulary, "doesn't look like a tome," he tosses it onto the bed and pulls out two accounting ledgers and an envelope stuffed with receipts. Tossing them onto the bed he pulls out a black bladed knife, "Huh! The murder weapon? If so, how did it get in here. What material is that?"
Apr 18, 2024 12:43 am
Lettie breathes a sigh of relief that they aren't all being arrested for meddling with the crime scene. The words in Mr. Gardiner's journal cause her stomach to twist. What was he mixed up in? she thinks to herself, worried that she helped or encouraged this somehow by lending him the books.

She tries to think of what he could be referring to as 'the Tome'... Certainly none of the books in her shop...

Officer Grey reaches into the drawer again and pulls the last item, a large ancient book wrapped in silk cloth. Unwrapping it reveals a book with the title written in Greek. Bound in weathered leather, its cover adorned with faded sigils of arcane origin, it exudes an aura of profound antiquity. Its pages, yellowed with the passage of time.

Lettie reads the cover, The Book of Dreams.

As it's is over half its HP, that also has the potential for a Major Wound. At this point I roll against CON to see if it knocks him out. It does not.

So that's an Extreme for Jack, Regular for Lettie and George and a fail for Nora.

Gardiner rolled a Regular vs Jack, and Nora, a Hard success against George and and Extreme success against Lettie.

As these are opposed rolls, even if you succeed, you have to match or beat your opponent so only Jack is able to resist (among the PC's)
Nora, Lettie and George are suddenly accosted with otherworldly visions, dreamlike shapes and colours swirling in the air around them.

There is a flash of blue light as Jack hits Gardiner fully in the back, the spirals carved into his body and arms light up, everywhere except the head. That blow would have taken down a normal man but Gardiner still stands. It turns its attention to Jack.
May 7, 2024 7:16 am
Meanwhile, there's a loud thud as a large jar of pennies falls from a kitchen cupboard, smacking George in head before hitting the ground. It smashes and pennies go everywhere.

Lettie, as the colours subside, your mind reels at what you have seen.
OOC:
Give me a Sanity check (1/1d3)
May 7, 2024 3:52 pm
Just as Lettie emerges from her dazed state, the reality of the situation crashes around her. This can't be real. It can't be happening.

May 9, 2024 1:58 am
George clutches his head in pain, his ears ringing due to the blow from the jar of pennies. After a moment he regains his composure and searches the cupboard again.
OOC:
If searching 2 rounds in a row isnt allowed, let me know and I will edit, I'm just not sure what else to do while dazed.

Jack will fight back. In the event that I succeed, would I roll damage with the chair or unarmed?

Also, (if I can burn luck on a Fight Back) I'll burn 4 luck to bring it to a Hard success.

Rolls

Fight Back (Brawl) - (1d100)

(34) = 34

May 11, 2024 1:32 am
OOC:
That’s up to you. How do you envision Jack fighting back against this assault?
May 11, 2024 3:07 am
OOC:
Okay, since the chair is in his hands already he’d be swinging it to try and put as much distance between him and Gardiner as possible.

Rolls

Fight Back Damage - (1d8+1d4)

(8) + (2) = 10

May 11, 2024 8:37 am
OOC:
That's a hit and he missed, no need to burn the luck as a Hard won't make any difference.
Avoiding Gardiner's grasp, Jack slams the chair into the creature's side. Once again, the spirals light up all over the body except the head. The blow would have crushed a normal man, but Gardiner shrugs it off.

just to clarify, when you say that the dazed effect ends this round, does that mean combat is an option for those of us that are dazed this round or next round?
May 11, 2024 9:29 pm
OOC:
Provided you survive the sanity loss, you can act this round.
May 13, 2024 5:10 pm
Nora's breathing turns to heavy gasps as she starts to sob. Panicking and no longer to keep quiet or still, she throws herself at Mr. Gardiner, hammers at his unnatural body with her fists while tears stream down her face.

I'm posting this as player & not in character. Full disclosure this is the first time I'm playing Call of Cthulhu ever. Is it a faux pas to discuss what my character is gping to do in combat with the group during combat (since this is all supposed to be happening quickly)
May 14, 2024 7:14 am
OOC:
Not at all, I'm happy for you to do that. If we were a round a table you'd do that, so go for it.
May 16, 2024 2:10 am
OOC:
where is that obsidian knife that was found earlier? It was hidden away, we should try using that. I can try attacking with the kitchen knife I found as a distraction.
May 16, 2024 4:00 am
OOC:
Oh my god, sorry everyone! I'm not sure why I thought it wasn't my turn yet.
"Officer Grey! Do you still have that knife? None of our blows seem to be doing anything!" And Jack will drop the chair and (for better or worse) attempt to grab and pin Mr. Gardiner against the bookcase to keep him from hurting anyone else.
OOC:
Assuming a Brawl roll but let me know if it's something else.

Rolls

Fighting (Brawl) - (1d100)

OOC:
Give me a spot hidden Jack. In fact George can too
May 16, 2024 7:47 am
OOC:
OK performing a maneuver like this is indeed a Brawl, but another factor comes into play, your size. Jack is point higher than Gardiner, so there is no penalty, but if Gardiner tried a similar thing on Jack, he would get a penalty die. In this situation it doesn't have an impact, but if you were trying to attack a creature larger than yourself, it would.

The Gardiner-thing
Gardiner tries to push away Jack's attempt to grab him.
OOC:
That's a fail vs Jack's Extreme success! Jack has him pinned down good. Although there's no damage here, I'll give you a bonus die to the strength check you'll need next round to keep him in place.

Officer Grey points his handgun at Gardiner, "This is your last warning, stand down or I'll be forced to shoot!"
May 17, 2024 5:08 pm
OOC:
George, as the Gardiner-thing is held in place, you can attack with a bonus die and it will not have a chance to dodge or fight back. If you want to aim at a particular part of the body, take a penalty die (so that would just cancel out the bonus)

Nora shouts to the room, "Aim for his head! Those blue lights, there's something keeping us from hurting him!"
May 17, 2024 11:15 pm
Heeding Nora's advice I grab the kitchen knife, wheel around on my heals and charge Gardiner. I let loose a furious scream and aiming for its skull I bring down the blade with all the force I can muster trying to penetate his cranium.
OOC:
so, my brawl is 45%, 13 is a hard success, correct?

Kitchen knife damage (1d4+2+db) - (1D4)

(4) = 4

May 17, 2024 11:21 pm
OOC:
Yes, that's a hard success. You can drop 4 points of luck for an extreme and extra damage?
May 18, 2024 2:02 pm
OOC:
yes, I'll use 4 luck. Thanks for the reminder.
May 18, 2024 10:03 pm
OOC:
So that's Max damage of 6 + your 4 on your 1d4 roll. Total damage 10
May 18, 2024 10:08 pm
With its arms pinned by Jack, George leaps in and stabs the Gardiner-thing in the head. There is no flash of blue and the blade of the kitchen knife is buried in the skull, right to the handle. The light goes out of Gardiner's eyes. blood bubbles from its mouth and the thing goes slack in Jack's arms.
May 18, 2024 10:45 pm
George sinks to the floor, adreneline coursing through his veins and cold sweat on the back of his neck.

"...and STAY dead this time..." he says between heavy breaths.
May 19, 2024 1:46 am
Jack lays Gardiner down gently but also as fast as possible, and then leans on the bookcase to catch his breath. "Good one, George. Everybody okay?"
May 20, 2024 5:18 pm
Nora, still breathing heavy and feeling the fear and anxiety of what just happened, does a quick inventory. Her knee is bothering her, but that's normal. However, her hands trembling and her headache are new, though not worrisome and perhaps expected.
"I am....well not fine, but not hurt. What was that? Was Mr. Gardiner somehow alive and driven mad by his injuries?"
May 21, 2024 4:19 am
"I don’t think madness would cause him to glow… but I won’t be the one to claim he was undead. Officer Grey, have you ever seen anything like this before?"
May 23, 2024 8:12 pm
Officer Grey lowers his gun, "What the hell was that?"
May 23, 2024 8:22 pm
Officer Grey allows you all to take what you need from the room in exchange for allowing him to claim the case. George takes the ledgers and envelope of receipts and Grey hands him the note Nora found, no questions asked. Lettie gets her books and takes the Dream book too.

Over the following weeks, you piece together the truth of the situation. James Gardiner enjoyed a vivid and fantastical dream life but somehow lost his ability to dream. He sought occult solutions to regain his dreams and found a spell in a tome that he believed would open the way for his dreams to return.
Unfortunately, the spell and the book were cursed. Some strange entity from another world tricked Gardiner into performing the rituals he found in the tome. One prepared his body to become a vessel for the foul entity while the other led to his death, sending poor Gardiner’s soul into oblivion. His empty body could then be possessed by the entity—just as your investigators discovered.

Between Jack's attacks with the chair and George's heroic attack with the knife, you managed to kill the vessel, though this event may give you all your own bad dreams.
OOC:
Due to your timely actions, you can feel proud to have played your part in foiling the schemes of a monster from beyond. Your surviving investigators are each awarded 1D6 Sanity points. Well done! Perhaps this incident has changed your investigator. If there are dark and unwholesome things out there that wish to break into our world, will your steadfast investigator join the fight to stop them?

In addition, you get to roll against skills you used successfully without the aid of Luck or Push. Roll against each skill on 1d100 and if you fail, gain 1d10 on that skill.

Lettie: Occult
Jack: Throw, Spot Hidden, brawl
George: spot hidden, brawl
Nora: Brawl

Everyone can also make a similar improvement check on Luck
May 24, 2024 1:00 am
George folds the paperwork and puts it into Gardiner's ledger which he tucks under his arm. "Good luck explaining this one Officer Grey..are we going to face any consequences, legally speaking?

For an improvement roll, you need to fail the roll to get a reward, so if you roll under your skill you gain nothing. So essentially, the higher your skill, the harder it is to improve.

Thanks for joining us Braedan51! Not every game one Gamersplane expects daily posting, this one is set to that as I try to turn one over every two months. You can find plenty of games to join over at the Games Tavern for all kinds of genres.

I currently run three longform Call of Cthulhu campaigns that have gone on for years at this point and the players love it.

Nora makes her way back to her rom, sitting down at her favorite chair, trying to make sense of what she just experiences with her fellow boarders. She knows now that Mr. Gardiner was indeed dead, and whomever or whatever attacked them was not him but something....other. She remember the feel of hitting the...thing, and felt in her bones that she could do it again.
