Leaving George to deal with the body, Jack and Lettie move into the bedroom side of the room, to look at the bookshelf.

The bookcase is finely carved and has glass fronted doors, either side of which are the busts of two flute-playing cherubs carved into the upright moldings that support the doors. There is a drawer at the bottom of the unit. All of the woodwork is detailed in intricate scroll work.

Most of the books appear to be on finance and banking, a few travel books for obscure places etc.

The top shelf doesn't have enough books to fill it so a bookend has been used to keep the books upright. The bookend is a monstrous thing, looking like some humanlike squid creature.
George and Rosana, Gardinder is now on his back and you have the opportunity to inspect the body further with a First Aid roll (Rosana can also try that Spot Hidden)
Having gone through the letters, what is Nora doing now?

With Mr. Gardiner on his back George can really see the extent of his injuries, thinking back to his boyhood days an eagle scout he examines the cuts on his head.
Nothing seems to stand out, so he takes a closer look....
OOC:
I would like to use 7 points of luck to make my pushed roll successful, bringing my luck form 35 to 28. I'm not liking the dice this game! LOL

Rolls

First Aid (50%) - (1D100)

(72) = 72

First Aid (50%) PUSH - (1D100)

(57) = 57

OOC:
I'm afraid not! As mentioned earlier, it's either Luck or Push, you cannot use Luck after you have pushed. A failed push results in something bad...

The wounds on the head and neck are deep and appear hastily made. the blood loss was severe and likely what killed him. George leans down to open the shirt, seeing old scar marks across the chest and arms but as he gets a closer look, he slips and manages to get blood on both of his own arms up to the elbow.

Jack will lean down and try to open the drawer in the bookcase.

"This all seems more normal than I’d expect for someone who found himself in the middle of some ritual…"

Lettie gives the bookend an odd look before flagging two books from the collection: her own book and a book about the myths and legends of Greece and Rome.

"Maybe not," Lettie mutters to Jack, picking up her own book. She glances at the pages to see if there is a bookmark or any other indication of what Mr. Gardiner may have been reading about last.

Nora wrinkles her nose in distaste at Mr. Bugbee, hearing his fumble and turning around to see him. "It seems blood is quite literally on your hands, Mr. Bugbee. Far from fortuitous." Speaking loud enough so all of the people in the room can hear, she asks while waving about the letter, "What business did you say you were about? It seems you had our departed Mr. Gardiner helping you with some sort of ledger on a tight timeline?"

Jack pulls open the drawer but it doesn't hold much of interest, a few pens, paper and envelopes and a few odds and ends like string and tape.
OOC:
Jack give an INT check and either Spot Hidden or Craft (Woodworking)

Pulling the Freud book from the shelf, Lettie finds no bookmark nor an indication of what Gardiner was reading. As she's looking, her eyes are drawn to the left and the bedside table. On it, next to a desk lamp, is an old book that she recognises, The Dreamer's Dictionary.

Rolling Spot Hidden and First Aid
"These scars," she indicates on the arms and chest, "They are months old. And this," she indicates the spiral cut from the head, "This was cut from the top and worked down to the neck. James was right handed, you can see where he changed hands. He did this to himself. Oh my James!"

She looks in surprise as George slips, covering himself in blood, "Mr George! Have some respect, if not for James, then for yourself!" She stands and steps away from the body.

First Aid - (1d100)

(8) = 8

Spot Hidden - (1d100)

(73) = 73

Jack looks disappointedly at the contents of the drawer, then shuffles them around a bit to make sure he didn't miss anything.
OOC:
If I'm understanding correctly, I believe that's a success on both?

Tapping inside, Jack determines that the space between the drawer at the bottom of the bookcase and the bottom shelf is too big—there is possibly a secret drawer; however, removing the bottom drawer and feeling about in the gap fails to reveal a way into any hidden compartment. Looking about he spots a button hidden in the scroll work and pushing it reveals a secret compartment.

Inside he sees three books, something wrapped in silk cloth and an obsidian knife.

The book she is looking at doesn't seem to have been read very recently. Setting the Freud book aside, Lettie picks up the Dreamer's Dictionary on the bedside table instead. She is tempted to hide it under her shirt before the police arrive. It would be an awful shame if it got caught up as evidence for ages or lost entirely. She wanted to investigate her friend's death... But she also couldn't deny that the monetary value of the book was a motivator.

At this point, everyone hears Tommy’s voice and a man’s voice with him, coming up the stairs.

Lettie hears the voices from the stairs and panics. She attempts to hide the book behind her back and under her shirt, hoping that her waistcoat is loose enough to hide the protrusion.

Nora shrugged at Mr. Bugbee and put Mr. Gardiner's correspondence in one of the large pockets of her skirt, planning to hand them to the police when they came. She glanced around the room and saw Ms. Hayes and Mr. Karosas over by the bed. She shuffled somewhat timidly, trying to maintain the maximum distance she could from poor Mr. Gardiner's corpse while still making her way toward her fellow boarders. "What have we found? Any details about his family? Perhaps in England or Scotland?"
Apr 12, 2024 10:38 pm
Lettie secures the book but doesn't realise it's not especially well hidden.
As Nora enters the bedroom area, she stands by the wardrobe and notices the bed is tidily made and there's a depression on the pillow as if someone slept on top of the covers. Mr Karosas is crouched looking in a drawer at the base of the bookcase whle Lettie seems to be securing something in the back of her pants.
Hearing her son, Rosana quickly moves to the door to stop Tommy seeing what's going on. A policeman appears at the door.
https://i.imgur.com/I8UIApX.jpegBeat Cop James Gray has arrived. He sees a dead body on its back on a tarpaulin covered in blood. Beside him, a man your recognise as George Bugbee is crouched by the body, hands and arms covered in blood. Three others are to the left of the apartment.
Apr 13, 2024 6:24 am
James Gray enters the room. He is a young man of average height and wears a well maintained police uniform. His dark brown hair is neatly trimmed in an attempt at looking professional that is at odds with the look of surprise on his face as enters the room seeing George covered in blood and the body laying on the floor. James takes a moment to survey the room and and takes a breath before saying "I am officer James Gray, I was called over here by Tommy. I was told you needed police assistance". He looks directly at George. "George you are covered in blood. Do you mind explaining what is going on here?"

You all recognise Officer James Gray, one of the regular beat cops around Federal Hill and he knows each of you.
