Everything is in order in the room, except for the body on the tarpaulin. There doesn’t appear to have been a fight in here. The furniture is upright and there are no bloody footprints. The only unusual trappings sit on the floor, in front of the corpse on the tarpaulin: a piece of blood-stained paper lies between two black candles, which have both burned down to their stubs.

Inside the room, going clockwise from the doorway, are: a wardrobe, bed, nightstand with lamp, an ornate bookcase that divides the room into two living areas, a window, a small table set in the corner (with two chairs and another lamp), a fancy upholstered chair, overhead cabinets built into one of the walls, and another table along the wall to the left of the door.

Rosana, kneeling beside Gardiner, realises he is definitely dead. There is a deep cut, freshly made, around the head, as if a knife has traced a spiral from the crown to the neck, his clothes are blood-soaked but the blood is dry suggesting it took place some days ago.

Nora is next into the room and looks around.
OOC:
The room is large enough for six people to move around, though the section with the bed would crowded with more than two people there

Note that Tommy will not be out of the building yet, you could shout and tell him to find a policeman

Lettie flags Tommy down and tells him that there is another nickel in store for him if he runs to find a police officer. "Send them to the boarding house, quick as they can," she tells the boy, before steeling herself to turn back to the scene. Seeing that a few of the others have entered the room gives Lettie the courage she needs to enter as well.

The first thing that Lettie notices are the black candles. She has read too many books on the occult to dismiss it. Black is not a common color for candles, nor is the floor a common place to light a candle. The color and placement of the candles reeks of occultism to her. That, combined with Gardiner's recent fixation on dreams, gives her a sick feeling of dread.

Knowing that the police may not understand or make this kind of connection, Lettie moves carefully through the room to get a closer look at the candles and the paper. She doesn't want to hinder an investigation, but she doesn't trust the police to take her concerns seriously. She attempts to discern what, if anything, is written on the paper and see if there are any other clues.

The tarpaulin, candles, and piece of paper, as well as most of the rest of the room, are splattered with dried blood. Fortunately the waxed tarpaulin has protected a fine Oriental rug—meaning that the Landlady will not have to spend considerable time cleaning up the bloodstains!

The paper is blood stained and contains handwriting in Greek.

Looking for some normalcy, Nora shifts back into her role as a busy-body. Nora moves to the right through the door, unashamedly riffling through the items on the table by the door and moving on to the built in cabinets. She mumbles to herself in German, "Wir werden das herausfinden. Vielleicht ist da eine Notiz, eine Erklärung versteckt. Das könnte der Polizei helfen, arme Seelen."

In reply to Nora, "Well, in that case...I guess that makes US his people. George says as he removes his jacket & begins rolling up his sleeves. He takes a deep breath and steps into the room. "Mister Karosas, would you please help me lay Mr. Gardiner on his back, so we can put a sheet over him and he can have a little dignity?

On the long table by the door are piles of organised correspondence and an attractive wooden holder for pens, paper and envelopes. A man's hat sits on the corner of the table.

Jack snaps out of his haze and nods, then gently nudges into the room to help George with Mr. Gardiner. Once they've finished placing the sheet over the body:

"A good idea, George, but should we be disturbing an active crime scene? I'm sure the police will want to investigate."

Then Jack steps back against the book case, both to steady himself and to glance over the selection for anything that might catch his eye.

Lettie sighs when she sees the Greek. She studied it in school but is out of practice. She squints at the writing to see if she can make sense of it.

Can I use a luck point for the Greek roll?

To meet your Greek score of 40, you'd need to drop 49 points of Luck! I wouldn't advise it. You could do something extra to push, maybe spending a little extra time and reading it out loud (that can't end badly can it?). That would give you a chance to reroll the skill, but with a risk.
As for your occult, that's a regular success, so you learn the following:

Lettie stares at the words on the page, but the longer she looks, the more jumbled it appears to her. She sighs.

"It looks like the trappings of some sort of ritual," she says to the others, her voice trembling a little. She braces herself for the disdain, disbelief and even sometimes ridicule that tends to follow those kinds of statements. She joins Jack at the bookcase, and glances at the titles, looking for either one of her books or any book that looks like it has been recently disturbed. "He was fascinated by dreams lately, bordering obsessive, really..." she mutters as she observes the bookcase.
OOC:
Oops! I misunderstood the luck mechanic, I don't wanna lose 49 points!

"In for a pound" Jack says with a half smile and a nod. He then follows Lettie around to the other side of the bookcase, after realizing he was attentively studying the plain back of a bookcase. He chalks it up to the shock.

"He was getting older, maybe his mind failed him? Could have been hallucinating..." Jack says to Lettie but loud enough for the rest to hear.
