Ch. 1 - The Keep on the Borderlands

The party continues down the passage, which runs east from the main hall for a total of 120' before turning north. After that, the hall stretches 200' to the north. The way is dark and musty, but no more creatures rear out of the dark to menace the adventurers.

The walls are once again plastered with frescoes, but these ones are heavily torn and faded. They are also much darker in hue and tone, displaying scenes of Biblical destruction—cities burning, statues toppled, people crying in despair. The flickering of the lantern only makes them that much more terrifying, shadows seeming to animate the flames and screaming faces.

Father Petronius inspects the artwork, his face growing concerned. "These robes . . . some of these figures are priests of Set. That is the god we call Thanatos, but the ancient Thothians knew him by another name. If priests of Set worshipped here, we may be standing in their tomb. When that faith was purged, those that weren't martyred were sealed away in their own temple."

As Petronius explains, Kraagor notices something odd about the eastern wall of frescoes. Where the plaster is peeling away, some of the construction looks far newer than the rest of the wall. In fact, the fresco, albeit centuries old, looks newer than anything here.
OOC:
If/when the party is done investigating here, the hall turns west after its 200' run.

EDIT: All that walking only took 6 turns. I accidentally rolled for a 7th turn, but that won't occur until you turn west at the end of the hall. For anyone keeping score, it has been three hours in the dungeon (and you entered in the morning).

Presume we are checking for traps, team, or is Kraagor steamrollin' the way out front?

OOC:
Kraagor may be dumb and ugly, but one thing he isn't is dumb. Slow and steady.

OOC:
Got it. From now on, while Kraagor is taking point, I will assume he's keeping all senses alert for traps. Now I'll finish the crawling above.

Farem looks at the frescoes, impressed by the scale and content of the scenes. "In what kind of doomed place did we enter?" he asks, as much to himself as to the others.

He looks around for anything unusual and, failing that, makes himself ready to continue walking with the party.

Not thinking, Kraagor takes his warpicks to that very section of wall, newer than the others! Diggy diggy hole!!!
OOC:
I really lost track of time here, didn't realize it had been so long since my last post!
Sep 9, 2024 4:19 am
OOC:
No problem at all! It happens, which is why I left space for anyone to chime in. For the record, concurrent searches will altogether take one turn.
Kraagor begins chipping away at the wall, loosening ancient plaster and stone alike. Farem scans another part of the wall, but can't find anything else of note. Pretty soon, Kraagor uncovers what looks writing, but chittering from the north draws much of the party's attention.

Darlene is on her feet in an instant and readies her bow.
Sep 9, 2024 4:54 am

Four chittering creatures enter the circle of light, huge hairless bats with the proboscises of mosquitoes! The stirges buzz hungrily, completely taking the party by surprise—except for Darlene.

The creatures split up and plunge with their needles. Stirge 1 attacks Morgan but bangs against her shield. Stirge 2 goes for Delfarious but overshoots its target. Stirge 3 attacks Farem, stabbing into him, and stirge 4 finds similar success with Ezra.
OOC:
While the rest of the party is surprised, Darlene may act with her ranger's awareness. After that, we will roll Initiative as normal for Round 2. For targeting purposes, the stirges are now in the same spaces as their targets.

"Ah!" Delfarious screams as one of the bloodthirsty creatures buzzes him. Holding his lantern high to provide the party with light, he tries to move behind Morgan when he can, out of the line of fire!
OOC:
I know it's not really his turn yet, just doing a little narrative jig.

Darlene fires at stirge 1 over Morgan but misses, her arrow whistling into a wall.

Round Two
The stirges (3 and 4) on Farem and Ezra dig their proboscises in deeper and painfully suck the blood out of their prey, dealing 3 damage to each.

Meanwhile, stirge 1 stabs at Morgan, who strafes to the side. Stirge 2 swoops over to Petronius, stabbing into him and beginning to suck his blood.

Not about to let a stirge get away alive, Kraagor engages the one trying to eat Farem! Alas, his slow Warpick fails to make a solid connection, like trying to swat a fly with a hammer!

Round Three

As Ezra collapses from blood loss, stirge 4 pops free of its victim and buzzes over to Darlene (J5). Meanwhile, stirge 1 continues to harry Morgan. Stirge 3 sucks more of Farem's blood, dealing another 3 damage. The same thing happens to Petronius, who can't seem to strike stirge 2.

Morgan steps around stirge 1. Stirge 4 misses Darlene entirely.
OOC:
The party is up!

EDIT: This is a bad time for me to keep confusing Delfarious and Petronius. For clarity, Farem and Petronius are being fed on by stirges. Morgan and Darlene are being attacked but not fed on.
