Chapter 6.2: Daring Rescue

OOC:
If we get the repair bot working and know what's wrong with the shuttle we can have the bit fix the shuttle while we do other investigations?
Trying to understand the advanced readings might as well be trying to read another language for Mercer, but he can tell that there aren't a lot of nanites in them. Not right now anyway.
"We seem to be ok, but I think you're right. Torching this thing isn't a bad idea.
Noone touched this thing, right?
...Either way We should rescan in an hour."

Sure. It will probably do that anyway.

"So what you're saying is..." Douklan, still keeping an eye on the wider cavern from atop the shuttle, chimes in on the radio, "That the crew were out of their shuttle when the beast arrived, so they could be alive elsewhere in the complex. How do we want to go after them, and how do we ensure that our vehicle is protected from random abominations showing up and scuttling it?"

As a side question: How dangerous are these nanites to *us*? If they can sneak out of the modified ape and infect us, then Mercer and Hank are already screwed.
You have to discover that In Character. Hank is as clueless as us.

OOC:
Can I use the bioscanner to try and detect similar metal in the ship?
Can the ships sensors do anything for us?
We can't get back on the Solaris without knowing. But we can finish the job.
.... Maybe we're going to need that hospital after all. If it's still in use.
Does anyone know anything about Nanites? Can they infect us and the ship both?
Mercer gestures at the wreched shuttle.

Someone will have to stay with the Solaris while we go on foot. Someone who hasn't gotten close to this thing.

"Jil and Erin will stay with the Solaris. The rest is left to us."
OOC:
Was anyone wearing the assault suit they should have been?
Hank wants to talk with the robot now.

"Actually we are supposed to be here. We are looking for your crew. Where were they going when they left, and did they contact you before you were taken offline by the ape? Do you have the frequency they were using to communicate?

"And how many spare parts will you need to get this ship to fly again?"

Peter and Douklan are. Corbin is using his lucky armored vacc suit, so he is also isolated.

"About time you noticed me," it said, its voice tinged with a hint of superiority. "I suppose you're here to fix me, then?"

"Ah, my pet crew," it said, its voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "They were headed towards the crashed frigate, on a salvage mission. As for communication, yes, they did contact me before the unfortunate incident with the ape. Their frequency is stored in my memory banks.
Band G, Channel 663.

"I've always found it amusing how humans rely on us bots to keep their precious shuttles running. Of course, it's all in a day's work for me. Keeping this shuttle operational is not just a duty, it's my calling. I have all that I need in our own storage area and I won't rest until it's back to peak efficiency. Please, just gimme my legs. By the way, you didn't plunder MY shuttle, did you?"
RB (Repair Bot)
OOC:
What do you do?
Apr 21, 2024 3:13 pm
OOC:
I like this bot. RB is great, but if I had to deal with it in real life I think it would drive me crazy.

OOC:
Great name. I'm calling him "RB" now :)

Nope. The bioscanner doesn't work in the ship, just biological material. There's no blood there.

Ship sensors are very good to detect things far away but not microscopic.

Your best bet is finding a doctor. (Or getting Heal-0 but that's for the next chapter, if you wanna)

Or finding a medical investigator, but they left to capture a Bio-Synth 😃
Apr 21, 2024 5:09 pm
OOC:
Yeah, I was hoping your other character was going to stick around. This lack of medical skill could now get us killed. I guess I know what extra skill I am taking next level ...

We also have a survey scanner. Can that help see things like this?
To Peter, Corbin, and Douklan, Skeeve says, "Do not open your suits. Stay contained. Now that we know the environment is potentially deadly, let's stay safer. I'm going to change shortly before we head out."

To RB's first question, "Yes, we will repair you. Where are your spare parts located and my friend here," motioning to Corbin, "will get those legs moving again."

After hearing the frequency, Hank asks Mercer, "Can you try that channel and see if you can raise anyone. It'll be good to know if they can even respond."

To RB's last question, "No. We are not plundering the shuttle. If the crew is still alive, then the shuttle is still with its current owners. If not ..." Hank takes the opportunity to pause and look at the droid with a smirk. "Then we'll just expect the appropriate recovery fee."

Hank then radios back to the shuttle and says, "We could have nanobot contaminants in the scene. Mercer and I have been exposed. The other three should be OK in their suits. Since you two have not been exposed, please stay on the shuttle. You should be safe this far away from us. Erin, please toss my armed vacc suit out the airlock. I can't change my initial exposure, but I can make sure to keep it down now."

He turns to Mercer, "Do you want one, too?" Assuming he does, then he asks Erin to toss a second one out, too. Once they are outside and the shuttle is resealed, he says to Peter, "Sorry for the inconvenience, but could you please run over and get the one/two vacc suits?"

Once at least his vacc suit is retrieved he will change suits and hope for the best. Finally, he says to RB, "Do you mind holding this suit of armor/two suits of armor for me/us until we get back? Thanks!"

OOC:
I agree, but I couldn't justify it in the situation. They wouldn't stay with the crew when there is an ongoing investigation.
Not that they have to be gone forever. ...

No, I agree with the decision. Doesn't mean I can't whine about it, though. 😁

Peter tunes in the frequency the bot gave on his assault suit comms and tries to make contact with the crew:
OOC:
I would assume their shuttle had some kind of identification marking I could use to reference them
"Salvage crew of the NR-XIG shuttle, come in"

"Salvage crew of the NR-XIG shuttle, this is the crew of the Solaris responding to your distress beacon, if you hear this transmission please respond"

He will keep trying the frequency and waiting for any responses.

Peter gives a nod to Hank and while still trying the frequency he will run the quick distance to the ship and grab their vac suits, making sure the shuttle locks itself before getting near so that his own suit contamination does not get into the shuttle.

Luca Vasquez
"This is Luca Vasquez, communications specialist for the Ramirez Salvage Crew. Who's this?"

"This is Peter," he replied quickly. "We've been searching for your crew. Are you all okay?"

There was a brief pause before Luca responded, his tone tense. "We've had better days, that's for sure. Jax was shot near the electrical substation by a couple of nutjobs trying to force us out. We managed to retreat, but he is hurt pretty bad. Maya is doing her best to stabilize him" Luca replied, his voice grim. "But we need to get him to safety soon. We've retreated to somewhere near the crashed frigate, but we're not out of the woods yet. We encountered some hive rats on the way here, and they're not exactly friendly. Moreover, our hovercycle broke and, without Jax, we had to ditch it."

Douklan, you feel safe above the shuttle and the ape never got too close. Hank asked you to burn the cybernetic monstrosity to the ground using your plasma gun. Will you? Keeping some of it intact is risky but may have its uses.

On another topic, Erin and Jil volunteered to stay with the ship, but you're not entirely sure if that's enough or the best plan. Do you have another idea or recommendation?
OOC:
What do you do?

Corbin, the bot is surely annoying, but it is smart and capable of repairing the shuttle and even itself, if you help with its broken legs. If you like this model, you think you can also build another RB back in the Celestial, if you spend some time to analyze its design a little bit further or leave James to do so.

OOC:
What's the scale on those maps? How long would it take to get to 2 on foot, since we can't use the Solaris?
Do we have any spare parts to fix a hovorcycle, I know we brought some spare parts, but are they a kind of "handwaved" general use thing?
If so Mercer can be told what to bring and would switch out (In order) Rations, Grapnel, Climbing harness, lowlight Goggles, Atmofilter. If we can get a confirmation that they haven't had need of lowlight or air filters he may just not bring them anyway, just in case.
(I don't have a fix or medical skill, but I can carry things and go with.)
BTW. Without exerting, aka just using base character movement Mercer walks a mile in 16 min. I'm sure he could do faster if need be.

"Actually, we can use the Solaris, subject to tunnel size. We can either ride on the top, or we can seal off the cargo area from the rest. We have options.

Also, if Mercer and I are contained, then we shouldn't be able to infect, so there's that."
OOC:
And I curious, too. What does the path to the crew look like? How close can the Solaris get us?

Also, while technically in charge, Hank is not ex-military or a tactical expert. He is going to heavily rely on those that are. He's a civvie who knows what he is.

htech says:
In the shuttle's common room, an active holographic map illuminated the walls, revealing the intricate network of tunnels and pathways that snaked through the lower levels of the ecumenopolis. Numbered markers indicated their current position (1) and the expected location of the crashed frigate (2), nestled on the outskirts of the forbidden territory. Flooded areas were marked in blue, in red are the Forbidden Regions, while green delineated large passages, big enough for the Solaris, and white indicated narrow walkways. Yellow highlighted blocks overrun with wildlife, reclaimed by nature.

OOC:
Alt text: The image above has a map of a city, with numbers 1 and 2 marking the relevant locations discovered so far. Between number 1 and 2, there is a path that goes right for a couple of kilometers then goes down in a diagonal near a flooded area and a couple of blocks with wildlife.
OOC:
Looks like the Solaris can't get along the white lines and the green will only take us a little way, if any really.

-fizzzzz....BLAM! - "Uh...nanites? Did you say nanites? Like in fairy tales?" As Douklan shoots the body of the "ape" monstrosity, he continues to chuckle nervously. "You - you guys know how crazy that sounds, right? Heh-heh. Nanites. Next you're going to tell me you're seeing flying pink elephants." -fizzzzzz...BLAM- "Or genies granting wishes. If there's even a possibility of something like 'hostile nanotechnology' down here, we'd better go and extract those Salvagers quickly before we find out what other nightmares the Forbidden Zone has in store. Some fairy tales are even worse."
OOC:
Douklan has ZERO interest in keeping stuff that he's only read about in science fiction horror stories intact. Would a previously-fictional technology like nanotech be worth a lot of money? Sure, but so was King Kong...until he got loose and killed scads of people. The risk of nanotech getting loose and wreaking havoc in this much-lower, analog, macro tech society of the ITC is unimaginable.

How many shots does it take to render the carcass inert? Afterward, Douklan will go through the procedure to reload the plasma projector before we head out down the narrower corridors after the Salvage Team.
