Paphos Plaza Remnant

OOC:
continued from Here
This used to be the a area used for an open air market twice a week and was used for parades and other large gatherings when Paphos still stood. The buildings are all single story brick constructions with heavy wooden doors and small but high open air with bars windows. All the roofs often have easy access to the rooftops that have a slight dome like curve and the walls extend 2 feet above this. This allows the rooftops to act as view stands.

Geis

It indicates you will need to wander around. It will get a closer or further indication as you do.
May 24, 2024 5:30 pm
"OK, that means we have to try and blend in, as it were. I recommend that we take as much of a spiral pattern to the wandering so that we can always remember where this Node is so we can get out as quickly as possible. Let's see what happens."

When everyone is ready, the open the door and see if they can head out and around.
May 24, 2024 7:10 pm
Before entering Kaarik does his best to take a posture of what he thinks a common thug would look like.
Obviously, he looks anything but a thug.
May 24, 2024 7:53 pm
Good idea, on the first circle we should get a sense of direction as to where to find this thing.
Hey Kaarik, just stay close, strength in numbers.
May 24, 2024 8:08 pm
Opening the door reveals what you all heard through the windows. A crowded plaza with a variety of races though almost all look to be warriors. Packs of goblins patrol the area, small packs of kobols with sorcerous and heavily armored leaders, hobgoblin squads, a couple lizardmen groups, and even a couple bugbears and an ogre. The building you exited from is in the middle of the plaza. Scattered throughout the area are a variety of stalls. Most are selling foods through a few have exotic weapons and armor or miscellaneous goods from jewelry to lumps of stone or silken cloth.
https://i.imgur.com/h9iinO3.png
Though sparse there are a couple humans but your group seems to attract attention as you stand apart from the "usual" creatures that walk these streets. Kaarik's acting gets a few sniggers from swaggering bugbears that pass you. Most worrying of all are the two gates you see to the east and south manned by goblins and the goblins patrolling the area. They seem to be looking you over.
May 24, 2024 9:21 pm
Arc speak fast, but quietly as to not raise more attention, to the rest. "We will raise more attention if we stay in place. Act as if we were curious about buying stuff, but not overly interested. Let's stat. Follow me."

If the rest agrees, he would lead the team 2 squares to the north, then turn west another two squares, and another 2 squares to the south... Finishing the first circle at the back of the room they appeated, and keeping away from guarded gates. Also trying to avoid being too close to the patrols, but not being too obvious about it. Then he asks Geis for feedback on directions.

As you circulate you seem to draw less attention but still seem to stand out a bit but checking out the stalls seems to work.

The first stall is only mildly interesting.
Goblin’s Gear: A variety of makeshift weapons and armor, cheap but functional.
Weapons: Rusty Short Swords, Crude Bows with Arrows, Spiked Clubs, Barbed Daggers, Improvised Spears
Armor: Patchwork Leather Armor, Metal Helmets (Dented but Functional), Small Shields (Made from Scrap Metal), Studded Leather Bracers

Nearby is stall run by kobolds that seems bent on outselling the goblins
Kobold Creations: Traps and gadgets, including some unique ranged weapons and light armor.
Weapons: Small Crossbows, Poison-tipped Darts, Traps, Bone Daggers, Sling Shots with Enchanted Stones
Armor: Light Leather Armor, Scale Mail, Camouflage Cloaks, Kobold-sized Helmets, Reinforced Boots

As you head west you find a pair of similar stalls but with magic items
Goblin Enchanters: Small magical trinkets, charms, and potions. Mostly low-level enchantments.
Magic Items: Enchanted Stones, Charms of Minor Protection, Potions of Healing, Firestarter Amulets, Rings of Whispering (Allows Silent Communication Within 30 Feet)

Kobold Alchemists: Potions of healing, invisibility, and minor elemental effects.
Potions: Healing Potions, Potions of Invisibility, Potions of Fire Resistance, Acid Flasks, Smoke Bombs
Magic Items: Firecracker Beads, Sticky Bombs, Elemental Resistance Charms, Glowstones, Bags of Tricks

Geis

When you start heading south you get a message from Geis Back the other way, its more to the north and umm a bit east I think. But definitely north.
May 25, 2024 8:09 am
While acting curiosity, Arc asked the goblins of the first stall So.. what enchantment do the sling stones have?

After hearing Geis, instead of turning south in that point, he leads to the north 4 squares. And waits for Geis comment.
May 25, 2024 1:53 pm
Aizashi follows the rest of the group looking around the stalls. He found the idea of poison tipped darts interesting and beginns wondering if he could do something similar with his own darts.
May 25, 2024 3:43 pm
Skeeve says, "We should probably get some light armor for Kaarik and maybe Aizashi, and some cloaks for all of us, so we can blend in better. Anything to hide how different we look. We don't need to wear the hoods up. It's just to blend in better with appropriate clothing."

So, how much for four cloaks for the group? Five, if Geis needs one, too. And how much for some piecemeal leather armor for Kaarik?
May 25, 2024 3:45 pm
Kobold Alchemist

Oh, those magically never run out and make flash and bang when they strike something. Not enough to do much to the target but useful none the same. The color and sound vary depending on what is struck. Very useful in knowing if you hit your target or something else. Also good for finding wall and other things in the dark.

Moving north you pass a building that has guards around it and the roof has be set as a stage of some sort. As you move through the crowd you catch a bit of chatter.
Quote:
"Do you think he'll really show up -- the Boss I mean?"
Geis

As you move north then stop you hear Geis again Um... closer but not there yet? maybe east a bit? Move around and I will let you know
May 25, 2024 3:54 pm
There were cloak in the kobold stall if you wish to purchase those. The are designed to entirely cover smaller creatures but will still cover most of everyone else except Ark with his wings. The Camouflage Cloaks are a mottled grey with strips of dull green and orange on one side and purple and dark green on the other tied in what looks like haphazard ways. Up close they stand out but in the wilds they might actually help. The vendor is selling them for 5 silver a piece.

As you move you Skeeve looks as some of the other stalls

Goblin Supplies: Miscellaneous Goods
General Goods: Adventuring Gear (Rope, Torches, Rations), Basic Tools (Hammers, Tongs, Pliers), Goblin Brew (Alcoholic Beverage), Dried Meat and Fruit, Water Flasks

Kobold Treasures: Miscellaneous Goods
Valuables: Small Gems and Precious Stones, Gold and Silver Coins, Decorative Items (Goblets, Rings, Bracelets), Collectibles (Rare Feathers, Shells, Fossils), Ancient Relics (Dating Back to Pre-Breaking Era)

May 25, 2024 4:52 pm
Skeeve buys three common cloaks for himself, Aizashi, and Kaarik. If the goblin helmet will fit on Kaarik's and/or Aizashi's head, he'll get one or two of those, too. The point is to not stick out as much as they do now.

He'd love to investigate the magic more, but they can't afford the slowdown.

Also, could Skeeve tell what species was talking about "the big boss"?
May 25, 2024 5:11 pm
The cloaks fit well enough as do the helms, though they are a bit stale smelling. Goblin soap and oils are not known for their over attractiveness to other races but these items are neutral enough you are not gagging. Throwing them on as you wander on you begin to blend in better with the crowd.

The goblins are the most chatty of the groups but the comment about the big boss came from a passing orc.

Kaarik whispers to the others.
"The boss? I would like to see him if possible. I am sure that you know who would like to know who leads here".
May 25, 2024 8:36 pm
About the stones, if he can barter 5 stones for 1 GP, he will buy them.
About the cloaks, he buys one anyway... He sees if wearing it as a toga makes sense. If it fits properly and he actually draws less attention, he wears it... Otherwise, he will just put it in his backpack.

Yes, I'm also curious about this boss. Let's stay afar, and wait for a moment.
May 25, 2024 8:57 pm
OOC:
which stones? quote the original text please. If you mean the "Sling Shots with Enchanted Stones" that was asked about then it is a pair set of sling and stone pouch for 50 GP. If you just want some stones then he does not have those and you would have to order some but that price sounds more than for a simple pop rocks sling stone
May 25, 2024 11:42 pm
Skeeve says, "Let's focus. I got the cloaks and helmets for cover, not because they are cool. We need to get the item and get out. Yes, it would be cool to see 'the boss' and have fun shopping, but that's all secondary to finding the item and getting out. Keep focused."
May 26, 2024 8:26 am
Aizashi accepts the cloak from Skeeve in surprise "um, thank you. You are worried about our appearance without these?" he asks as he looks through his pack to to find 5 SP to pay back Skeeve.
May 26, 2024 4:49 pm
While the "new" cloaks do not really change that much of your appearance there are other of the type around so it does make you stand out less, as does your browsing of the stalls. Following the Servitor's prompts you head further west moving causally and if just taking it all in. Passing a kobold who proclaims his services you wonder if they are worth their price or just fabrications

Kobold Whispers: Information
Intelligence: Gossip on Rival Factions, Information on Hidden Treasures, Maps of Secret Tunnels, Reports on Monster Activity, Scrolls with Traps and Tricks

As you get closer, according to Geis, you hear a couple passing goblins comment.
Goblin says:
More ogres on the street, since the giants took over the castle.
Geis
Moving on Geis indicates you are close and has Kaarik turn around so he and Servitor can peek out the pack flap. The then sends a message Its that scroll case on the goblin stall to the left

Goblin Grab Bags: Unidentified Items
Mystery Items: Pouches Containing Random Items (Range from Mundane to Magical), Unlabeled Potions, Sealed Scroll Cases, Assorted Trinkets (Gems, Amulets, Figurines), Small Locked Boxes (Contents Unknown)

Kobold Curios: Unidentified Items
Curiosities: Strange Artifacts (Potentially Magical) ,Odd-looking Stones and Minerals, Enchanted Trinkets (Effects Unknown), Unusual Bones and Teeth, Tiny Statues (Depicting Various Creatures)
May 26, 2024 5:26 pm
Skeeve whispers to Aizashi, "We don't look right and we don't smell right. By using these cloaks we blend in better. I'm still obviously a human, and you are still obviously and animalkin, but with these cloaks, we become the correct background color and have a more appropriate smell to the surrounds. Likewise, the helm will disguise Kaarik enough that they won't be able to immediately tell if he is human or elf. It's just designed to keep us from being too obvious.

"And don't worry about the money. It is the cost of doing business and if we succeed along the way 20sp isn't going to matter to any of us. Consider it a gift. Hopefully, it is the worst gift you ever get."

When the item is identified, Skeeve steps up to the indicated stall, and starts checking through some of the potions, then moves on to the scroll cases, he intentionally checks multiple cases before settling on the identified one. As he is looking through the items, he is detecting for magic the whole time. He holds it up to the proprietor and asks, "How much for this scroll cases?"
May 26, 2024 8:00 pm
Oh, I thank you. And here I thought I was the only one noticing the smell. Aizashi says in response to Skeeve.

He puts the money back in his pack and follows the others. When they reach the stall with the desired item he stands back a little to try and make sure they don't attract more attention than they already do
May 26, 2024 10:14 pm
Arc is relieved that all the effort to blend in a bit better is working so far. So when Sleeve mentions something about having fun, Arc doesn't really understand him.

A moment later, near the goblin stall... He looks for a moment the goblin stall from afar, and when Skeeve moves to see the cases, Arc approaches to check the potions. Arc wants to provide distraction enough so that the clerk wouldn't focus too much on Skeeve. "Do you have any healing potions? If so, how much do they cost?" his voice not overly interested, just like most curious shopper looking around may be.

The goblin running this stall looks you over with an appraising eye. Off to one side lazes a rather large bugbear who watches the stall and it's goblin staff/owner then turns his eye on your group from under its bushy brows.
Skeeve says:
How much for this scroll cases?
Ah, the sealed scroll case! A rare and valuable item, indeed. Its contents are a mystery, but I can assure you it's worth every coin. Some say these scrolls hold ancient secrets, lost spells, or even maps to hidden treasures. Such an item doesn't come cheap, though. For such a rare artifact, I'd say 500 gold pieces is a fair starting price. But, given your obvious expertise and appreciation for the finer things, I'm open to negotiation.
Arc says:
Do you have any healing potions? If so, how much do they cost?
Ah well those are much more common and I tend not to deal to much with such simple and common fare. You should be able to find such for about 25 gold over at the alchemists stall and he waves vaguely around the plaza
Arc can roll a test to try and rattle the goblin scholar.

Servitor has multiple tiny diamonds each worth 25 GP for a total of 300 GP. He has limited stores of wealthe and deamed that few others besides himself would recongnize the value of what he sought. And should they then he doubted they would sell for what he could afford.
May 28, 2024 2:56 pm

The goblin graduates a bit then addressing Skeeve
Surely you will not let this opportunity pass you by. Once the auction is done it is doubtful this place will be able to be maintenance with all the conflict going on.
I can assure you this scroll case has not been opened but my divinations have revealed that it contains writings on magical techniques from before the Shattering.
It is doubtlessly wotth far more than I am asking. Would it not be worth at least even 450 gold to such as you?
May 28, 2024 3:56 pm
Skeeve scoffs and says, "How about 250gp? That seems fair for a mystery scroll case. I might win, I might lose, but you still win either way at 250gp."
OOC:
I have to pick an opening bid, but not be insulting with it. Skeeve has at least another 100gp of gems on him, so he's just trying to get the value down enough to let the goblin "win" the counteroffer, but get it low enough they can afford it. He also has the unused psionic crystal on him that Grin gave him and I forgot to include in my inventory. I think you said it was like 25gp, too, correct?

For the record, Skeeve did make sure it was the correct scroll case beforehand. Don't want to spend that much money on the wrong scroll case. He will also detect magic to make sure it really is magic. (I am assuming that most of this is pretty much all radiating magic.)

Ha. 450 is already a low asking price

Arc says:

The "box" on its own is at least worth 100 GP. Adding 150 on top of that for what, though admittedly a mystery, might be invaluable is not too much. Plus there is the risk that was taken by those who delved into the ruins to find it.

But I am open to trade. If you have been here for a while as we have, surely you have come across some trinket or have some information that I could profit from. Don't let mere coin stop you my friends.

All items poses a bit of magical energy or at least react to it, like reflecting light from the sun. The scroll case is more like a pitch black pit. If you were not looking at it with your eyes physically your would not think it existed based on your magical senses.

The goblin takes a look at the ring before placing it on a metal plate with a crystal platter mounted above it. Glancing through the the crystal disc a slight flicker of greed crosses his face before he regains control. Though I still feel you have the advantage of the trade the ring is quite useful. Agreed. Pocketing the ring the goblin picks up the case and holds it out while his other hand is palm up, awaiting payment.

Skeeve reaches his hand out to Kaarik, who then reaches into his "pouch" where the servitor provides the 250 gp worth of small diamonds. Skeeve hands over the diamonds to the goblin and takes the scroll case. "Thank you. It has been a pleasure doing business," he says with a genuine smile.
May 29, 2024 10:48 pm
Geis has found this place interesting but Servitor is prompting a quick return to Dean. With your primary objective completed you wander around to not draw too much attention. Heading back immediately or do you want to do something else first?
May 29, 2024 11:21 pm
We want to take an indirect route back to the node and get out. I don't want to risk getting captured or whatever now.
May 30, 2024 12:09 am
The boss speech will be to the south. The closer we are to the speech, more people will approach that area. Let's go straight south, but away from the Boss' apeech.

We can pass the building we're we arrived at its west, and then go around it...
May 30, 2024 2:22 am
As you wander around, heading back to the room you arrived in you pass the platform/stage with its guards. The area around it stays mostly clear due to the rather surly disposition of the guards that are in full armor with helm so it is impossible to determine their race, save they are humanoid. As you meander you catch another snippet of gossip.
Goblin says:
"The Boss will be the guy bidding up the price."
Piecing together things you have heard and filling in a few gap you gather there will be an auction some time soon. But you get the impression it will not be today but within the next several days. The invitations are likely for those deemed strong enough to bid on it, and their forces. The Expedition might want to learn more about this.

Upon arriving back at the building you arrived from you are a bit put out when you see a trail of smoke drifting out from one of the windows and several goblins loitering around the front of the door.
May 30, 2024 8:21 am
"That seems not good." Aizashi mumbles upon spotting the smoke and goblins.
"Maybe we can circle around and see what's going on?" He suggests after observing the situation for a little while.

"Might as well. This won't be an immediate teleport, so fighting our way in won't be helpful."

Is there any other entrance to the building?
May 30, 2024 12:43 pm
Continuing to meander you circle around and from what you can tell the goblins are simply cooking a meal and relaxing in the shade of the building. when you get to close in you examinations a couple of the ones outside give you glares and tell you to "go delve yourselves elsewhere"
May 30, 2024 12:51 pm
Kaarik whispers, This is not good, let's go. There must be another entry, I think I saw a door at the complete opposite side of the plaza.
OOC:
I mean the last case at the east of the map. The small sign on it is a door right?
May 30, 2024 12:58 pm
Based on what you have seen of the other Remnanats you have wander more than half of this one but must be in the intterior. You know there are gates on the outside, guarded by the goblins, but will have to leave the plaza to reach them. Which side of the Remnant do you want to go to for an exit?
May 30, 2024 1:05 pm
Well, we know one of the gates is not guarded. We presumed it was because they felt it to be too dangerous to do so because of barriers and such. Skeeve will keep that direction in mind in case we get desperate.

Also, how sturdy are those walls? Can we force an opening or use a window on the far wall? I could always use the tremor talisman, but I figure that would be too loud.
May 30, 2024 1:49 pm
Wandering around you check out all the gates and they all have guards, but only 3 are standing open.
The walls are made of stone about 3 feet thick.
May 30, 2024 5:23 pm
I meant the walls of the hut with the teleporter pad in it. :-) Can we make a "new door" in it without causing a commotion?

Also, after wandering around a while, are the goblins still camped outside the door we need? If so, Skeeve is going to go up and see if he can talk to them. No, I have a better idea.

What groups are around the clear area where the door is with the goblins in front? Is there a group of a different species hanging around somewhere nearby? I need another group of not-goblins nearby. Bonus for me if both groups are talking amongst themselves. The basic idea is that Skeeve is going to use his TK to pick up some random small rocks and throw them from the not-goblins at the goblins we want to move. All we need is a bit of a distraction to get into the hut. Once inside we should be OK, unless we encounter more in there, too. And I even have a plan for that, if needed ...
May 30, 2024 8:19 pm
OOC:
What's a TK?
May 30, 2024 8:46 pm
OOC:
Telekinesis. One of his magic abilities is the ability to pick up items with magic and then throw them. Humorously, that is the primary intended purpose of the of the ability: to pick things up and throw them in combat. Skeeve never does that. Instead, he uses the pick things up part out of combat to solve problems, or to remotely open doors and things like that. I sometimes forget about the "and throw them" part. He also has a "force push" ability, but that ... actually, that's an option, too. Cool!

Skeeve is going to remotely mess with these guys until they leave. Too bad he gave up the ring that would ensure he couldn't be spotted doing it.
May 30, 2024 11:05 pm
The buildings of the Remnants are built of brick and are about 1' thick.

Though not crowded the are does have many others loitering, selling, and strolling around. As with most goblin groups, other thatn the guards, the ones in the building are under the eye of a bunch of kobolds. The two groups have a bad history in the area and both seem to be holding the grudge. However though the kobold groups is able to see and is watching the goblings they are over 100 feet away.

There are other groups and the closest is a trio of lizardmen hanging out by a door to the SW of the building with the matrix Node.

Skeeve tells the group his plan, and asks for their input. "What I want to do is have someone, probably Arc, move away from our group (to basically the right edge of the mini map directly above. The rest of the group stands on the side of me farthest from Arc. Arc then drops something to make a loud noise, which he can then immediately pick back up. This should cause everyone to momentarily look in his direction before turning back away. At this point I magically pick up a rock next to the lizardmen and throw it at one of the goblins. The area has ebb and flows of traffic by various factions, races, and individuals, that move through and around the stalls that are scattered around the plaza. As you plan all this you hear a loud noise behind you and to the north. A quick glance indicates what looks to be a bar with some kind of comotion inside.

Arc wanders off by himself till he is on the eastern side of the building in question and waits for a signal from the rest of the group that they are ready.

Lets get a basic test from Arc for performance/deception to see how well he is at getting everyone's attention. Then the "attack" from Skeeve. Feel free to add basic situational details based on existing content with minor additions. Let me know if there are any other preparations or adjustments to the above plan.

The rock rises slightly behind one of the lizardmen then flies through the air going right where Skeeve aimed it. The force of the unanticipated attack knocks the goblin off its feet. The startled warborn scrambles back to his feet to look back where the rock flew to see the lizardmen pointing and laughing to each other.

The felled goblin looks angrily at the lizardmen and start muttering back and forth with each other as one slips inside.

Kaarik whispers to Skeeve. "Well done! That was impressive!"
Jun 4, 2024 12:39 pm
After a couple moments more goblins come outside, glaring at the lizard men, and glance at one of the passing goblin patrols. The gathered goblins mutter to each other with the one struck being the most agitated.
Jun 4, 2024 1:06 pm
While waiting for things to escalate, Skeeve takes his crystal and tells Arc (since Skeeve and Arc are conveniently the two with the communication crystals) to loop around and meet up with the group n the other side of the building. Then the group loops around the little building to be on the "back side" of the goblin group so that if/when they approach the lizardmen, we don't have to go through them to get to the door.

The moment the goblins, or most of them, leave the door we rush in.
Jun 4, 2024 3:39 pm
You move in but the goblins aren't rushing to attack the lizard men. You hear the goblins grumbling and overhead over say If we get caught the boss will skin is alive. We can't just go rushing at them in bread daylight.

Just Wait till they leave the plaza, then we can get them.
.

You can tell from their tone and reactions that though they are mad at the lizard men they all are more frightened of the "boss". The goblins are all on edge now but are too afraid to act out where they can get caught.

Through the buildings open windows you hear the goblins inside finishing up their cooking. Several minutes pass and they goblins get called to go back on duty and leave but from the sounds of it the building will but teaming vacant for long. You quickly slip around the building and inside the room.

Walking up to the guarded gates you are looked over by the guards, who do not look familiar and do not react to the pary other than to relax more after verifying your invitation.

Stepping inside the remnant you look around and see it is a bit more crouded than before.
Oct 15, 2024 2:32 am
Skeeve will want to look at the market place again, this time without a specific target we have to get. He also wants to make sure of where the teleport node is, so they can easily reorient themselves as needed. Then, he wants to figure out where the stage will likely be so they can plan on where they want to be to watch the big presentation. Again, he will try to eavesdrop on goblin guards to see if he can find out any juicy details.
Oct 15, 2024 2:33 am
Is there only one gate? If not Kaarik would want to look at the others and also at specific places where it is obvious that people come and left, like some stands or rooms that would seem to attract more movement than the others.
Oct 15, 2024 2:33 am
I believe there are four gates. Last time we were here getting rejected, we went to at least two of the gates. So, I am pretty sure there are four gates. (They may not all work, mind you, but I am pretty sure there are four. We do know that at least two of them work.)

As an aside, Skeeve will want us to stay together. We need to NOT split up.
Oct 15, 2024 2:33 am
Arc seem to remember that one of the doors was 'distorted' with shattering veil... so only 3 usable. But with the invitation, it shouldn't matter much.
He is eager to get in and learn what is this all about. And he agrees we should all travel together as things may become complicated, and if combat ignites it better find us close by.
Oct 15, 2024 2:34 am
I do hope things will go better this time.
Aizashi agrees to stay together but hopes for less trouble.
Oct 15, 2024 2:34 am
There are 8 gates, 2 per side, but the goblins insist that only 1 on each wall be used for entry and another for exit. They do this to prevent groups meeting right outside where they may cause problems. The area is much busier though you note that most of the shops have consolidated or closed up. There are still merchants but they now form isolated areas by the faction they are with, kobold, goblin, hobgoblin, orc. Besides these you also see more lizardmen, a few ogre, and even a couple trolls, though those are given a wide berth by most of the others.

Some of those simply seem to be loitering about, much as you are doing, while others move with purpose, and some act as if in town or at market, chatting and joking around. There are several bars, a few building seem to be staked claims by factions. Goblins continue to loiter around the building holding the civic node. The stage is still guarded by dark armored humanoids.

https://i.imgur.com/Et7IQG2.png

Give me some tests for either eavesdropping or chatting up some of those you meet.
Oct 15, 2024 2:35 am
Skeeve would like to check out the kobold and goblin wares, to see what they have.

He will also want to move past goblins groups in particular to see if he can pick up anything through eavesdropping. He will also try to see if anything can be heard by the little building with the city node in it. This, of course, is all depending on what everyone else wants to do, too. Finally, while keeping a bit of distance, he will want to see what species the dark armored humaniods are. (Orcs?)

Some rolls below. I am assuming Advantage due to Perceptive and Charismatic, depending on the specific roll. I assume Focus for the eavesdropping and identification; no focus on the chatting as that has to be "in the moment".

Rolls
Chat up the goblin merchants DC: 5 - Adv - (3d6) = (223)
Chat up the kobold merchants DC: 5 - Adv - (3d6) = (555)

Oct 15, 2024 2:47 am
The good look to be much the same as before and as you chat with the goblins you only learn that they are much less arrogant and more nervous than last time. The Kobold however are more excited and you notice that while not working directly with the lizardmen there are several large groups of the larger humanoid reptiles loitering around the kobold shops. From the kobold you learn that they are expecting several factions boss's to show up and are looking forward to tomorrows events, being supremely confident of their dragon overlord's protection.
[ +- ] Equipment sold in stalls
Moving to the small building that seems to always hold a goblin enclave. Though you manage to get closer before being chased off by the simple method of a mass of goblins moving in to press on you till you back off. All you are able to overhear are a few bit of the group grumbling about the black guards and that they will be glad when the contract is up.

As for the figures in black armor you are uncertain. The full body armor is obviously well made and fully conceals the people within. Best guess is that they are human or hobgoblin but it could be another race.

You move slowly as you talk, getting a rough map of the area. The kobolds are hold up in the SE corner and the lizardmen are in the southern area. The SW seems to be a point of contention. The western block is a mix of bars and private shops and has a mix of clientele. To the NW are the Orcs while the NE is the Hobgoblins with the northern block having a mix of both with some human and ogre as well. The east and smaller interior buildings are full of goblins. You move to the western district where you avoid "The Pit" as the closest to the plaza but also the roudiest establishment, deciding you can visit it later if you wish. Just behind the pit you find a smaller building that is more of a tavern focusing on food as much as drink. Taking a table you order a meal and drink -1 silver each. The clientll has a mix of hobgoblin, orc, a couple humans, duende, dwarf, changeling, and fungoids. You noticed a few of these other races out in the plaza but the are few and far between.

As you eat you overhear a variety of conversations but many are muted but soft speaking and the crowds. The orcs are the loudes and tend to sound boastful and domineering. The most discernabl point is their repeated declarations about their "boss" though others refer to him as the "Dark Lord". A few other snippets you overhear shed some light on the other races in the plaza. It seems the "boss" has been recruiting, similar to the expedition" but with much lower standards and drawing less reputabe individuals and grouops. While there is not clear focus on what the recruitment is for it seems similar to the expediton in that they are searching the regin and securing items and information. They are aware of the expedition but seem to look down on them as weak and out of the know. There is also mention of the Tower but these seen to be more of anoyance for some reason.

The pit fights are all pay to play and a purse of 5 gold is gathered frrom the team for enty to the fight Aizashi does fairly well against his first opponent, a snarling orc who scoffs at the weaponless beastkin. That is untill his weapon is dodged and a pair of clenched paws driven into his sides knocks the air from him. Now taking it more serious but hampered by its early overconfidece the pair circle each other cautiously while the others mingle with the crowd.

Arc is able to find a spot at the bar and casually watches the fight as he listens in to the other patrons. Between sips of ale and shouting encouragement to Aizashi he is able to get into snippets of conversation with a pair of nearby hoboblins who's friend just lost to the orc. He learns that the orgs ar moving into the hobgoblin teritory to the NE and have taken over one of the remnants there.

Kaarik, unfortunately, finds mingling with the tough crowd problematics and after being stared away by several groups drifts back to Skeeve and Arc.

Skeeve is the least conspicious of the trio and manages to find a spot near the pit and gets a bit of food and drink as he cheers on his friend in the pit. he is able to gleen from the mutted conversations he overhears between the shouts of the croud that tensious between the factions is rising and were it not for the iminent arrival of the "BOSS" the dominance of the orc/hobgoblin aliance would have shattered and resuled in an open 3 way conflict between them and the kobolds and lizardmen. The aution is anticipated to have several decent magic items, most will cost in the thousands of gold and is reputed to have an artifact of power that has drawn the attntion of the Boss.
Oct 28, 2024 11:22 pm
OOC:
Just to be clear, the implication is that the BOSS is here to buy the artifact of power, correct? Who is running the auction? Goblins?
Skeeve tells Arc through the telepathic crystal, "From this point on pretend you and the others don't know me. I recommend that you three keep together after this, but keep your distance from me. Apparently, there is going to be an auction with some serious items being sold. Depending on what the biggest item is, I may try a bold move and it will be best if you don't know me if I do this. We can still always communicate through the crystal."
Oct 29, 2024 7:02 am
Arc shares with Skeeve thought the crystal what he found out, then "I get it, take care and don't go too far away from us. If things go wrong and you can't clear an escape route, we will join the fight."

Then, when Kaarik joins him, trying not to be overheard "The crystal tells me that it will be us three for a time. I trust Aizashi will be successful."

The pit is a large structure with an above average ceiling hight supported by arcing beams. Multiple tables, benches, crates, and a wide variety of assorted objects used as furniture. The "bar" is along the west side of the room and is quickly turning into a small fortress where all the employees are beating of anything that gets within their weapon reach.

The open area used for the fights, towards the middle of the room where the party save Arc now stand, has been flooded by the crowd. However the gang of toughs that seem to be have been running the fights are now wading through the area laughing and roaring as they smash heads, stab random passersby, and acting like nothing more than berserkers out having a bloody good time.

Arc has completely lost sight of the orc through the thick throng of the crowd as he is now at the south and the orc went to the north. Climbing to his feet he readies his bow only to realize it is not a great weapon of choice for close opponents at this time as most targets are moving and being moves by shoves, weapon strikes, and the occasional spell. However his shout gets a returning roar over the crowd, many of whom cheer and shove Arc or open a path for him to return to the middle of the room.

Aizashi tries to shove his way through the crowd , only to wind up getting shoved back and is quickly caught up in a face off with the offended lizardman who lunges at the beastkin Monk with jaws agape.

Kaarik looses his bow at Aizashi's lizardman opponent, which is cought off guard and distracted by the arrow. Slipping through the crowd he then sends a lit arrow into the north wall. The brick walls offer no good targets so instead he selects a wooden beam that spans the roof of that side of the structure.

Skeeve somehow ends up the brunt of two random attacks, getting slammed from both sides 2 damage.

Meanwhile Arc heads back to the others, after quickly deciding flight is not a good idea due to the number of projectiles flying overhead, only to get shoved into a quivering man who screams as he falls to the ground. A vile smell instantly erupts and the man scrambles back into the crowd as an expanding mist of mixed hues rises from a puddle where the man fell. As the puddle spreads any who touch the fluids scream and jump away creating a small but expanding opening in the crown that none dare enter.

OOC:
Ok, before Skeeve does anything, I need to get an idea of the building. Are there any balconies? How far away are the others? Can he even move through the crowd, or is it just a mass of people with fights literally everywhere but the stinky circle?

Why I ask: Skeeve has no interest in pointless fighting. He wants to teleport to somewhere he has a decent vantage point so he can try to pull his companions out. But he can't do that if he is just fighting. He needs to get out of the scrum.
Nov 4, 2024 6:18 pm
The large single story building looks more like a warehouse converted into a massive tavern hall. Made it brick, as all buildings seen to be, it has a 12' ceiling with stout wooden beams going east west. The room is littered with patrons, combatants, and furniture but not packed right. While not all are fighting even those that are not fighting are ready to fend off any that get too near, making movement hazardous. Arc is about 30' to the south from the rest of the party. The puddle is currently about 10 in diameter and spreading.

The main flights are centered around the former arena, just to the north of the party. While the trouble making orc was thrown to the far north wall his bodies are still nearby and give you occasional glares and shift closer as opportunity permits through the chaos.

Aizashi, Kaarik, and Skeeve gather together, there are many such groups throughout the room and fend off any who get too close as they make to either leave the place or hunker down and wait for things to die down. As this thought runs through your minds you notice that not everyone involved is settling for a punch or poke here and there as several bodies already itter the floor.

The pts have only a single door in the NW corner. All the windows, like all the buildings of the city are near the ceiling , long, narrow, and do not open, though these are larger they also have heavy metal frames between the glass panes. The entire building is made of stone and bricc save the heavy wooden beams, spanning east to west, that help support the ceiling over the large room. The strange pool that formed when the man fell to the ground is about 10' across and is steadily disolving anything that touches it. The vapors that rise from it smell foul but do not affect Arc otherwise.

Yeah, the plan to split up is now out the window.
Now that they are together again, Skeeve says, "Let's get out of here and see if we can regroup. Cover me if I have to make an opening."
OOC:
It sounds like the circle of destruction is near by where Arc was, so it shouldn't be in our way to get out.
OOC:
How many and what bodies do we see? While his initial inclination is to just get out of here, maybe we can make some inroads if we heal some people along the way.
Nov 6, 2024 2:49 am
There are about 150 people in the room but many are clustering along the walls leaving the middle to the more "eager" individuals and groups. Between you and the door you see 2 major groups, the pit boss pack stand in the middle roaring challenges to one and all while the antagonistic orc and his cronies loiter near the door shoving any who try to leave back into the middle of the room.
OOC:
Assume fore each standard move (25') you encounter 1 aggressive group. Bypass them, fight your way through, or move to the side and wait for things to calm down.
Nov 6, 2024 4:25 am
OOC:
How many in each of the two groups?

How many bodies on the ground between us and the door?

We have two approaches we can do:
- The bodies should all be fresh. We (Aizashi and Skeeve) should be able to heal many, if not most, of them. At least for a handful of rounds. Doing that might get us out of here without having to have a giant fight.
- Failing that, we will want to skirt the pit boss and go deal with the orcs. They're guarding the door, so we'll have to deal with them. But this depends on how many of them there are.
Nov 6, 2024 5:17 am
There are 4 in pit boss group but 2 look very tough, including the one that talked with Aizashi, another larger individual you guess to be an ogre that has no difficulty handling any opponent he faces and is the obvious leader of the crew, and the last is a shorter cloaked figure that does not get involved in the fight. The orc by the door has 6 companion and all bluster and glower at any nearby. There are only 3 or 4 bodies on the ground. Two are obviously dead while the others are uncertain.
Nov 6, 2024 6:43 pm
OOC:
I'd wager we can at least attempt to check on the 2 bodies we have no certainty on and heal those 2, if possible.
Nov 7, 2024 10:49 am
Using the telephatic crystal to avoid the hubgoblins to hear, he tells Skeeve:
'These 6 ones by the door were actively trying this to happen, that's why they are by the doors. We should figure out a way for this fight to turn everyone against them 6... A way for them NOT to block the exit for the rest... Or a way for them to be trap inside too since now they are the only ones who could run away.'
Nov 7, 2024 10:18 pm
Skeeve says, "Let's check the two unknown bodies." If we can get to them reasonably easily, then Aizashi and Skeeve will try to heal them. Not completely; just enough to avoid death and regain consciousness.

Assuming we do that, what are they?

While we do that, Skeeve will look to see if there are any groups near the "door orcs". He is looking to do a subtle Push/Pull attack to get another group to attack the "door orcs". Failing that, we can try to get closer to the "door orcs" and Skeeve will see if he can get lined up to grab one and force him into the "pit boss" group. How obvious are his magical effects?
Nov 8, 2024 3:27 am
As you discuss your plans the door bursts open, shoveing the orc and his cronies furthr into the room. A sqad of goblin guards dill the doorway, shouting for everyone to stand down. The spearmen move to start arresting anyone still fighting while several mages and heavily armored goblin sergents take on anyone resisting. The unexpected arival of the gobins stirs up the taveern thugs and all the ones who had been avoiding combat rush the door, deciding to join the brawl, swinging at anyone nearby and escalating the chaos. You are caught up in the mad rush, with several oportunistic attacks thrown your way but thankfully with no ill effect, and can either fight against the crush towards the door or go with the flow.

You head towards the exit when Skeeve is struck by a wave of force magic hurled by one of the goblin sorcerers as he leads the others. Fortunately the goblin mage is not highly skilled and he manages to deflect the energies but several other nearby combatants are thrown back. On the plus side this clears the area around you of other random combatants. On the down side it resolves the chaos near the door to only the pit boss crew, the surly orc, the goblin guards and your party.

bugbear
One of the pit boss crew, a large surrly bugbear roars out in anger at the orc crew. I don't care if the boss is an orc. You think you can throw your weight around here after getting tossed out by his new guards the giants? and launches himself at the orcs and soon the two crews are fully embroiled in a no hold bar battle royal leaving only the goblin guard with their bosses and mage as an obstacle to your exit that way. They block the door and you can not get out of the room without moving or killing them.

There are even more of the black armored guarda around the auction block but the glowing dome on in has shrunk down to be a small orb about 4' in diameter enclosing something within. The auction starts around mid mroning selling off odd bits and pieces, some artistic, others archeological, some books, and a few magic items of odd an unusual nature But all the items being auctioned off go for thousands of gold at the least.

Then at noon a squad of the black armored guards escords a man to the platform and he begins casting a spell as the autioneer informs the crowd that it was time for the main event. An artifact or emense power would be auctioned.

Also, do we have a better idea of what the black armored guards even are? Before the big event, Skeeve will risk getting close to one to see if he can have a better look. The black guards are heavily armored and carry a fain sense of magic. They seem to be ethere lean orcs, or heavily muscled hobgoblins or humans.

Due to the press of bodies the gobins have given up on any attempt to isolate their little club house but have manages to be able to keep th interior to themselves.

The energy of the crowd has increased and you notice a shift where others seem like you in that they want to be present but not too close. Others look to be taking up strategic positions. As the final auction begins it seems that this items is more for those in the know as its details are not expounded on. All you can see is a metal cube about 2 '.

Auctioneer
The auctioneer anounces And now for our final item we ask that only the serious members speak up. To ensure this is the case we will only respond to those that hold and bid plate which must have ben purchased prior to this event. At thie time we wil have the item verified by an independant party known and respected by many who know them. He then bows to a figure in the crown.

Elf Lady
You see an elven female ascend the stairs. She moves up to the box with 3 of the black guard surrounding her and the box as she slides open a small pannel on the top and peering in before chanting several spells. After completing this she nods to the auctioneer and signs a sheet of paper before turning to adress the crowd. The artifact has been verified and has a Order essence.

After that the auction begin with a bid of 100,100 god and incraments in bids of 10,000. You notice several serious participant that stand out. A contingent of hobgoblins that is comprised heavily of priests, clerics, and other clergy but have dozens of heavily armored soldiers with them. There is also a group of orcs, but they defer to a human in dark finery but functional cloths. There is also a mixed group of humanoid that makes you think of the freeholds. However after the bid exceeds 250k all the others give up and after a couple exciting minutes the dark clothed man wins the bid.

As the man and his orcs move to claim their prize there is a massive crashing sound and the entire plaza shudders. The sky above has massive cracks spider web over the entire area. The cracks spread and then pieces of the shattered sky begin dropping, revealing a massive black draconic form peering down through the gaps

Black Dragon

Roaring in anger the massive head rises up and with a great hissing sound is releases a narrow stream of liquid and gas like a black waterfall over one of the groups leaving screaming figures and melting corpses as the black mist eats away their flesh. He is trying to get rid of his fear, at disadvantage.
OOC:
EDIT: Not successful. But, can Arc give Skeeve his potion of invisibility? I guess that Skeeve has a way to leave the place, but this potion may allow him to better approach the prize.

Circling the hut to get out of the fight you make to the back of the building and back to the far corner just fine but is is here that you encounter a snag. While Arc is able to calm somewhat enough to hand over his potion of invisibility just the sight of the dragon hindquarters and tail sends him back into a panik as stories of a dragona legendary senses makes him sure that if they "sneak up behind it" to get closer to the door the dragon will know and lash out with breath or spiked tail. Both Kaarik and Arc need to make a Save or be forced close enough to enter the room

As you move around the building Aizashi notes that the fight over the box is escalating and it is still in the plaza. Kaarik is only all to eager to point out that with the dragon entering deeper into the plaza the gates to the south and or west are a viable escape path!

Moving ahead for now Skeeve reaches the door after moving past the swishing tail but knocked against the building by a shifting claws 2 damage to Skeeve, only to find it barred shut and the goblins within scream in fear as he slams into the building.

How sturdy does the hut look? It just took a tail slap!

I'm asking because I want to use my Tremor scroll to knock out a wall or the door. Whichever has the best chance.

Just so it is out in the open, Skeeve's plan is simple and relies on a lot of good rolls. However, this is fundamentally it:
1) Gain access to the hut, thus to the teleport pad within.
2) Use telekinesis to pull/throw the chest from its far point to us.
3) Grab the chest and teleport out of here.

There is no way to get it and run away like we did last time because we'll have multiple literal armies chasing us. If we teleport, we have a chance.

All buildings are made of stone with brick accents. The doors are all flimsy and can easily be broken down with effort. You can try to create a hole in the back but that would weaken the entire building.
The metal box is currently too far away, each large grid is one zone, and the crush of bodies blocks line of sight. If you move to the platform it will be a good place to spot and fling the box. Each Hurl can move the box one zone.

Well, first things first. Skeeve is going to use the Tremor spell to obliterate the door. It should not hurt the hut, as it isn't the target, but should utterly destroy the door, correct?

Maybe it would be easier if we tie the two of you to me?
He suggests in jest.

Complete side note:

We have two choices here:
1) We can cut this all relatively short and get out of here. We can do that by simply using the exit, or, since Skeeve just blew the door off the hut, use the teleport pad.
2) Do the big gambit and try to steal the chest. Honestly, I wasn't even really thinking of that initially; I just wanted to watch the cool battle royale. However, if Skeeve is extremely lucky, we have a chance to actually steal it. But it would take several rolls while being in the middle of the scrum. And the dragon would be extremely unhappy about it.
Honestly, I am willing to do either, but if @Psybermagi wants to do a quick wrap up, that's right here and we can do it. This will leave plenty of adventure opportunities in the future either way!

Arc is happy with any option. Arc is not happy being paralyzed by fear, but well, that's how luck goes.

Everyone except Skeeve is behind the building awaiting the good word only to hear a detonation as Skeeve blows the door away to reveal a room full of cowering goblins who scream at his dramatic entrance, or perhaps the dragon behind him and its swishing tail.

Ebonwrath
Just after that the dragon lets forth a massive roar You fools dare defy me? Then DIE!!! followed by a massive denotation that shakes the entire remnant. You look back to see a shimmering dome around the figure of the man who won the auction and a couple of his guards. The man quickly steps forwards and touches the box before disappearing along with the box and his last remaining guards.

The loss of the prize drives the dragon into an even greater rage which he decides to vent on any and all nearby unleashing noxious vapors from his mouth, claws, wings, and tail lashing out. Those that remain all turn to run with the loss of the box, including the goblins who decide the building is not a safe hiding spot with the door blown open and they all stream past Skeeve to head towards the closest gate out of the remnant.
OOC:
You guys can wrap it up here if you like but there are a couple of weeks left. Facing the dragon directly is a bad idea but with all this chaos there are alot of scattered individuals from the various forces up for a quick chat, after a bit more running, should you wish
Nov 28, 2024 4:36 pm
The loss of the box seems to have broken any trace of the facade of law in the plaza and it turn into a wild flight for survival and open chance to take out some competition.

The goblins lay into Skevee as he stand in their way out of here while a nearby squad of monsters try to duck behind the building where the others hide and try to smash you out of "their" hiding spot only to face off against Aizashi who steps forward to safeguard his friends

On Skeeve's side, what are the goblins really trying to do? If they are trying to leave, he will let them. If they are not leaving, he will try to intimidate them into letting he and the group in. He will say, "Let us in and I will take you to safety. Fight me and I will kill all of you!"

Assuming he can get in, he will tell Arc, Get over here and in the hut as quickly as you can!

Skeeve says what he says above, offering them a way out. But he will not trap them. If they want to leave he will in no way stop them.
Dec 3, 2024 12:59 am
The goblins are so panicked Skeeves word do not seem to mean much to them but when he gives them room they stream out of the hut as is is smashed by the dragons tail as it continues ton contend with the other factions within the plaza.

The dragon is definitely winning the fight for the plaza but not without a taking some damage in turn. Most of the panicked masses have fled the are by this point in time, though you still hear them in the distance of the remnant, and the powerful forces are making orderly withdrawls as well. The dragon roars in rage and frustrations as it continues to spew acid and magic all around. Everyone need to roll a Save again. If you fail you take 2 damage and gain the fear effect. Succeed and take only 1 damage without fear.

At Skeeves call the others quickly rush to get into the building but your group has drawn the attention of others and the squad of 4, their greed or survival instincts peaking their curiosity and driving them to follow closely behind.

Here's my save ... Yay!

Skeeve will threaten the tag-alongs ... "Surrender or back off!" Throwing in an extra roll for the Intimitation attempt. Using Advantage because of Charismatic, but drop the extra die if it isn't appropriate. Also, if they do surrender, he will tell them where to stand so they can come along.

Once his team is on the pad, he will activate it. If there are tag-alongs, he will deal with them at the destination. If Aizashi fails his Save, Kaarik will have to drag them into the hut.
