Dandridge

You spent a few days in Barlow Station, helping the town recover from the attack of vampires. Fortunately, the dead were few, although some of them rose later that night. One of those who rose was the Marshal Delilah Dillon! Fortunately, you arrived just in time to send her to hell!

The posse rides into the town of Dandridge late one night after a long night on the trail. The lights of the town mean a soft bed, warm meal, and shot of whiskey after a few days of sleeping on the dirt next to a campfire. The town seems quiet and peaceful when they arrive. You can hear that a train idles at the train station.
[ +- ] Map of Dandridge
What do you do?
Jun 17, 2024 9:43 am
Ruby is dusty and saddle sore upon arrival, not to mention thirsty and cranky. The sound of a train at the station jangles her nerves as it reminds her of the undead train days ago. She still has nightmares about it.

Upon entering the city she slides off the back of Kane's horse with something approaching grace. At least the days on horseback have taught her something. She massages her legs and then unstraps her small steamer trunk from the horse. She pats it on the flank for a job well done.

"Right to the saloon. I need a drink, a warm meal, another drink, some good music, and yet another drink."

Dirt’s eyes linger on the train, even as he pats Blossom’s neck for a job well done. The nights since the rescue had been filled with visions of the law-woman, and her twisted snarl as she lunged at them in undeath.

"You a drinking man, Padre? Looks like we’re heading to drink our fill." he says, but he knows he won’t do it; at least not while the train idled and the mechanical noise travelled on the air.

"Aw that was cruel, having to dispatch Delilah, poor woman. She would have made a great law woman."

Finally arrived at a place to rest, Kane dismounts after Ruby, a little saddle sore himself.

"I hear that. I'll join ya once I get my horse to the stables. As he looks for the building, the sound of the idling train reaches his ears and it sends a ripple of fear through him. He wonders when he will stop thinking of that nasty business every time he hears a train.

Dirt sighs a sigh that says he agrees. He feels guilty then, as he realizes he can’t remember where she was fixing to be the Law at. Was it here at Dandridge or somewhere further down the track? He supposed it didn’t matter much any more, except for the fact that those folk might be waiting on word about Delilah for a while.

The Reverend James Turner has been quiet on this ride, this journey to yet another town. This one looks untouched so far by the undead, and the old preacher eyes the cooling engine on the tracks after peeling his surreptitious gaze away from Ruby Reyes' immoral treatment of her sinfully shapely thighs.

"I do not touch the drink of the devil, sir," he says to Briggs, failing to add, "anymore."

Still, he accompanies the others and tries to take stock of the town. The mood, the train that's put in, whether there is a general supply store that might sell dynamite...

"Well, I hope you don’t mind witnessing a little sin, Padre." Dirt goes on, sounding a little thin and tired. Surely the priest wouldn’t, or else he’d surely be out of a vocation.

"You never been out this way, Ms. Reyes? Figured you might have passed through places like this when it came to your trade."
Jun 19, 2024 3:15 am
The town is quiet, eerily so, save for a piano in the saloon.

The Copper Spur is Dandridge’s prime— and only—social gathering spots. It serves as the town’s saloon, boarding house, and simple restaurant. It’s the oldest and biggest building in town.

You've entered the town from the south near the stables and the saloon.

"Looks like a church there." Dirt notes, and then tries to recall what damn day it was. Might be that the town was so quiet on account of Sunday service!

Still, there was someone playing in the saloon, and so he heads up to the doors. He peeks a look in, with a hand on each of the doors, about to push in.
OOC:
I’m imagining those half height swinging doors! Very look overable?

Any chance being a semi-local Turner knows the local minister, or anyone else for that matter?
Jun 19, 2024 6:21 pm
Kane takes the opportunity to grab a pinch from his pouch and load a cheek with it, turning away from Ruby who had taken such offence to his habit.

"I could eat a horse and drink a town right now." Turning to Dirt he says, "Could be, right enough. Feels mighty quiet. Could be a good thing, or a bad thing. I s'pose we'll find out soon enough."

Looking through the window of the saloon, Dirt sees that the player piano plays independently, through some wind up gearworks. The piano is splattered with blood.

The source of the blood might be on the floor. Lumps lie there, and as you get a better angle, you see there are bodies. Still, blood soaked bodies.

Turner knows that the preacher here is Amos Adams, a middle aged man who never managed to get the church construction completed.
Jun 19, 2024 11:23 pm
Ruby looks through the window as well and her breath catches in her throat. "Not again," she whispers. "Did the bloodsuckers strike here first? But why not take them like they did last time? We have to check on them." Cautiously Ruby opens the saloon door and steps inside.
Jun 19, 2024 11:55 pm
As Ruby is about to enter, Dirt sees movement. Of the bodies, five figures appear to feasting on the bodies.

"Stop!" Dirt calls out with an urgent whisper! "Something inside, and I think we know what!" he says, pulling his weapons free.

"How long do those wind ups play for?" he asks, trying to get a bead on how long ago this place might have been hit.
Jun 20, 2024 2:56 pm
Kane is about to follow when Dirt shouts his warning. "Dang! Not again! How many of them inside Dirt? Anyone still alive? I can run around the back? If there is a back entrance or window."
Jun 20, 2024 3:22 pm
Ruby freezes with her hand on the door, then slowly pulls her hand back. "Can't get no damn breaks around here!" she whispers angrily. "At least we have the element of surprise. I say we draw steel and just kick in the door, pieces blazing!"

KCC

Jun 21, 2024 3:20 am
"Might be best to burn the place down and gun down any that make it outside." Dirt adds with a grimace. But then they didn’t know, as Kane suggests, if there are survivors hiding somewhere.

"We hit em hard and we hit em fast last time, and that worked a treat! Same again!" he adds, with a resigned sigh!
Jun 21, 2024 2:21 pm
"Yep I agree. You on board, Rev?"

Kane spits a gob of tobacco onto the ground and hefts his Big 50, ready to get down to some more vampire slayin'.
Jun 22, 2024 5:09 am
The Reverend hefts Delilah's shotgun and nods, grimly.

"Straight to hell, we blast these creatures. Back to the pits with them! To Satan's brimstone-filled bowels!"
Jun 22, 2024 5:50 pm
There are a couple windows too if you want to shoot from outside, a big one that three of you could shoot through. They will get The Drop for the first round if they shoot before the door opens.

If someone goes through the door at the same time and makes a stealth check, I'll give them The Drop on their ambush, too.

"Got any words that might, hells I don’t know, sanctify our weapons, Padre? Kane here is a hell of a shot, but they only go down if you shoot them in the heart.

I was thinking you might be able to splash some holy water on our rifles, or something…"
Dirt asks, fumbling for something that might help them bring down the dead with something less than pinpoint accuracy!

"He's right. We need all the help we can get, Rev."

Kane hadn't believed in any of that mumbo jump before, but with what he had seen lately, his eyes had been opened wide. Sure, he had some unexplained experiences, but this was of a higher order. If the Rev gave them a prayer and a shot of holy water, he'd take it.
Jun 23, 2024 4:26 am
"Just let Jesus guide your aim!" Reverend Turner says and he takes up a position outside the big window, kissing his silver cross and preparing to also blast away. "Jesus loves! Jesus loves killing vampires!"

And with that, the man's longarm is up and tucked into his shoulder as his finger squeezes one of the weapon's two triggers...
OOC:
There's no 'blessing' the Rev can offer, but he does have a couple of important edges that should allow everyone in earshot to roll +1 to all recovery rolls when you're Shaken.

"You must make sure and get it good before it gets me!" he says, with a stern look to each of them that expects a promising nod in return.

Ruby can see it steady in the rafters, a slightly greyer spot in the dark. It's perfectly still, ready for her to give a sign she's seen it before leaping to attack!

"Well hells bells and damned tarnation, do these things ever go away?"

Kane is about done with these creatures, and he wonders how much longer until their luck runs out. Granted, their group could handle their weapons, but still, they've mostly cone out of all this vampire slaying intact, Delilah being the sad exception, and it was only a matter of time...

"If these fiends keep coming at us, how long until another of us goes down?"

He turns toward the shrieks. "Nice shot Ruby! I'm hopin' you have a few more of those in ya," he remarks as he heads toward the sounds. "Come on Dirt, Rev," he calls back behind him.
Jun 29, 2024 8:48 pm
"They are creatures of the night, Mr. Kane!" Reverend Turner says as Deadshot calls to him, heading off across town.

"And they are making more of their kind! The Lord will not allow it! His flock are not mean to rise again in death, but to know final rest, to meet St. Peter and pass into the afterlife!"

Saying that, the man moves into the building they just shot the hell out of... looking for survivors and those that have or will turn.

"Every one we put down is another that can’t get us… nor nobody else!" Dirt says, though it was stating the obvious.

"There can’t be a great many of them, or else the whole country would know about them." he goes on, hoping it’s true!

When the plan for an ambush comes up, Dirt reckons it’s a good idea. Though if he offered himself as bait again, the others might wonder about his eagerness to die.

"How to draw them in?" he asks, with an eyebrow raised.
Jul 1, 2024 2:19 pm
"Makin' more?" Kane calls out to the rev's back as he goes into the building. "Guess that's what those fiends do, huh?"

"Dunno, Ruby, whacha thinkin'?" Kane asks the woman when she mentions setting up an ambush. "I ain't a big believer in humans as bait. Any dogs around?" he asks, half joking.

After what happened with DD and several others, having risen from the dead after being killed by vampires, you suspect but don't know if the victims in the saloon will rise too, in a few hours. Burning them before then has worked.

The first floor contains a fair-sized saloon. There’s also a kitchen in the back where simple meals are prepared. The second floor has four rooms, all situated along a balcony overlooking the saloon floor.

The five nosferatu were feeding on the remains of the patrons and saloon gals who were enjoying an evening of revelry. No one else is alive in the saloon.

"Don’t seem like there’s anyone else about!" he says, already working on hefting wooden furniture where it needs to be for the fire!

"I reckon the padre here has the right idea. Less they’re afraid of fire that is. I can’t say for certain!" he goes on, hefting more and more before motioning to one of the others for help pushing the piano into the bonfire pile.
Jul 2, 2024 11:05 am
Ruby doesn't see the need in sacrificing an entire building just for the fire. What if a wind spreads it and sets the whole town up? But in the end her nerves are too frayed to put her misgivings to words so she just mutely nods and begins piling up wood in the center.
Jul 2, 2024 3:17 pm
Kane grunts his assent and looks for anything that will add to the pyre after helping Dirt move the piano.

"Seems a shame to destroy a nice piece like that piano but there ain't a lot of ready tinder around."

He wouldn’t be surprised if the crew he had run with had pulled stunts like that at one point or another!

He shakes the thought loose, and grunts:

"We do the same for these ones as we did for them ones!" he says, jerking his weapon in the direction of the saloon! "Come on, now!" he says, and follows the reverend and his shotgun!
Jul 4, 2024 11:42 am

"These ones, those ones. Let's follow that one," Kane says, pointing to the Rev as he falls in behind him.
Jul 4, 2024 5:53 pm
Outside you see three men, one kneeling in front of the bank door, messing with the lock, while the other two keep nervous eyes about them.

They see you exit, and one says something to his companions, the two standing both drawing guns, but not pointing them at you... yet.
Jul 5, 2024 12:19 pm
"Thieves, we have discovered, my friends," Turner says as he nearly levels his shotgun at the three men. It is pointed in their general direction, just off to one side a bit as he then raises his voice.

"These are dark times to be lost in the maze of greed, boys! The devil has sent horrors to this town tonight! Do you not think he put these thoughts of robbing these poor people of their savings in your heads as well? Repent! Give up this scandalous break-in -- stand with us and hunt down these demons! It's been a long time since James Turner's eye twitched the way it does now.

"Boy," the holy man says grimly, raising his shotgun to aim it squarely at the would-be bank robber. "If you've gone and forgotten your Ten Commandments, Sunday School bein' a long time ago and all, I'm here to remind you that my trusted King James Bible has stealin' at number eight. "Why don’t y’all stand up straight and we’ll do this right?"
Jul 7, 2024 2:02 am
Kane spits toward the men for good measure, while raising his sniper rifle a noticeable amount. It's not an outright threat, but it's damn close, and gives these men a chance to avoid bloodshed.
Jul 7, 2024 1:48 pm
The three men count your guns, countin not being their strong point so it takes a couple goes to get all the way to five.

"All right Preacher man, don't you get too twitchy with that peashooter, this ain't worth its getting shot over, especially since you just shot up the saloon. You keep over there and we'll clear out, reckon that's fair?"

The bandits with guns lowered start moving away from the bank before the last, the would be lockpicker says, "What in tarnation is going on in this town anyway?"
Jul 11, 2024 2:00 am
Turner frowns at Kane, saying, "Son, I'm asking if we should enlist their help not rob them of their firearms."

Then, to the three men, he adds, "The Devil's come tonight to Dandridge, men, and we're not letting him have it. Sure could use some help. I'm sure there's a reward in it -- just need to find the mayor and such in all this."
Jul 11, 2024 5:54 pm
"Reward? Well why didn't you say so. We ain't gunmen but we ain't not gunmen either. What's your plan, preacher man?"

The three men ease up a little and look to Kane. Should they get gone like the Sharps holding man said, or team up like the Reverend suggests?
Jul 11, 2024 6:35 pm
"All due respect, I ain't your son. What's your plan exactly?" he asks feeling a little awkward.

After he hears the rev's preaching about the devil, he nods in agreement. It was certainly a better plan than stealing their weapons, he had to admit. Lowering his Sharp's, he no longer appears menacing to anyone that's looking.
Jul 12, 2024 6:44 am
The Reverend shrugs. "We spoke before about cremating the poor souls those creatures feasted on. On a pyre, say. That might bring the rest running. Were enough guns in place to ambush them... could be the making of short work."

Dirt lowers his guns and goes to turn back towards their work.

"Come and see for yourselves!" he calls, beckoning the men over! They’d see the bite marks, and the dust, and maybe they had brains enough to put it all together.

Given the distraction, it might be time enough for them to see just how good of gunmen they were, of the saloon folk started to rise!
Jul 12, 2024 7:49 pm
I think this is a good place for the Reverend to do some Persuadin'. Success and they'll help with the ambush. A raise and they'll even come up with an idea to help.

Kane can assist roll if he dares, also Persuadin. Success grants the ally +1 to one skill total this round, and a raise adds +2. A Critical Failure on the support roll subtracts 2 from the lead’s total—sometimes extra hands just get in the way!

The men are a little uncertain. This isn't what they signed up for. "We'll come along, and lend our guns, and trust that the misunderstanding at the bank will be just that, a misunderstanding?"

They wait for confirmation then will assist you as requested in setting up an ambush -- as long as they're not the bait.

"Jesus forgives, boys," the Reverend says with a bit of a smile, saying nothing about the town Sheriff. "Your eternal souls won’t regret this decision. Now let’s send some of these damned creatures back where they came from!"
Jul 14, 2024 6:34 pm
"Vampires?" Plucky asks with a shiver, making it clear that his nickname is, whatyacallit, ironic.

As if in answer, the ghostrock whistle on the train screams it's hate into the night, and several hidden vampires shriek back.

Davey says, "What in Sam Hell kind of train Is That?" You can't see if from here, but you've heard that sound before as if you needed any further proof.

A train has been here the whole time, but as it is on the other side of the station, and a bit shorter than it once was, you didn't know which train, until now.

Between you, you think there are at least four vampires in the town, based on the shrieks you just heard.

One shriek's inside the bank, and by the loudness, right near the door - could have been waiting for the bank robbers to fall into it's maw.

You hear two shriek from inside the church.

You hear one at the marshal's office.

Of course, you don't know if they all shrieked.

"Aw hell. Which is it to be? We all go to each together to each location and bring along our new friends or split up? What are we thinking here?" Kane asks while anxiously following the screams to each location through his narrowed eyes.
Jul 16, 2024 5:42 am
Scanning the town, squinting, listening to those horrific screams, Reverend Turner is back in the old days inside his head. Thinking smart. Thinking of ways to put these damnable creatures in their sights with the least amount of trouble and risk.

"Strikes me they'll all be coming to that train soon enough, probably draggin' poor souls with them they intend to feast on -- like last time. So, strikes me we should set up a shootin' gallery. Kane, you think you can get up on that water tower? Dirt, up on the roof of the train station? You three -- one of you with Mr. Briggs, the other two on top of the telegraph office. Ruby, you and me -- why don't we go hunt whatever's pullin' that whistle..."
OOC:

Dirt winces, knowing that their plan would mean that some poor, cornered soul somewhere wouldn’t get rescued before getting chewed on. Still, there was no good way to go about it, and like as not all the souls in this place might have already been snuffed out.

"They’ll plan on leaving the same way they came in: By train. A before the sun comes up, I’m betting! We wait them out and pick em off as they make a run for cover! Closer they get to sun up, the more risks they’ll take."

That, or the crew would light up their hiding spots come morning.

I'm hoping the whistle was some kind of beginning of a round-up, but maybe it'll be a while yet. Most of those places I named should be able to see into town and the train.

Jumping when the shot goes off -- the Reverend and Ruby had been intent on approaching the engine quietly -- the Man of God shakes his head as their plan begins to unravel before the first stiches are knit.

"They were supposed to wait, to get into position!" he says as they continue to move, but perhaps faster now. The look he gives Reyes is an intense one, a strange sort of stare. The Reverend unloads the shotgun and it hits the engineer maybe not square, but in the darkness, he sees at least that the dead man shudders under the impact but keeps coming, faster than anyone got with a load of shot ought to be. It lunges for the man looking to tear him apart...
OOC:
That's another horrible roll against one of your characters. I'd suggest a Benny or two to soak Wounds. Cuz as it is, that's Four wounds which is a might bit fatal.
Outside, Kane blasts away at the vamper lawyer... and the creature explodes into dust.

"By the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, get some rope!" the Reverend shouts as he struggles to one knee. Victor, Ruby and Briggs all pepper the monster with shots, but all that lead only makes the thing stagger back a step!

Taking square aim at the thing's head, Turner thumbs back both hammers, then pulls the gun's two triggers at the same time -- firing both barrels!
OOC:
Okay, Called Shot -- Head. That means -4 to hit, but +4 damage. Both barrels means +4 damage as well. -3 from wounds to hit, but one of his Feats (that I often forget about) canceled 2pts of called shot / range penalties. So to hit will be -3 since the shotgun at close range is +2 to hit. Base damage will be 3d6+8.

When the smoke clears from the thunderous blast, though, the Reverend sees that the recoil was too much for him -- all he succeeded in doing was splanging two loads of buckshot off that infernal iron engine!

As the Rev stumbles off, spring up blood as he makes for the store, certain it will have salt, Ruby races off and grabs her trunk. A jar of brine and a bag of salt, along with a tincture of goofer dust and she's sure she's got a zombie killing concoction.

Meanwhile, the zombie engineer struggles unceasingly. It's strong as all get out but the five of you holding it keep it pinned.

There's a shriek from inside one of the two sleeper cars. There's more vampires afoot!

I'll let Ruby narrate the destruction of the engineer.
Aug 14, 2024 11:59 pm
Ruby shakes the vial as she runs, creating a cloudy and foaming mixture, and she feels the pressure building under the cork she keeps firmly in place with a thumb. When she arrives she skids to a halt on the dusty ground. "I'd close your eyes, this might sting if you get any in them." She holds the vial over the engineer and removes her thumb. The cork shoots out with a pop! and the foaming mixture shoots out under high pressure. The foamy liquid spatters the undead creature and begind dissolving it as if it were hydrochloric acid. The stench is unbearable.
Aug 15, 2024 2:18 am
The zombie goes limp quickly, the magic animating it undone almost immediately. Yet, Ruby's libation continues to reduce it's insides into a smelly soup.

You've two sleeper cars potentially filled with few or many vampires. The shriek you heard tells you they're not all sleeping. What do you do?
Aug 15, 2024 2:54 am
Ruby wipes some of the sloshed liquid off her hands onto the remains of the engineer's clothes. "I have an idea. It's a temporary solution, but we can just start the train up, hop off, and let it drive itself. Hopefully into a mountain or off a cliff. Alternatively we all go, drive until the sun comes up, and open all the doors."

There may have been penalties for that very thing when shooting at the running vampire from the bank!

Don’t get bogged down in the details! You all saw how well breaking into the bank went! Do we want to risk Dirt again so soon?

Victor tries the handle of the door in the general store and if it's locked (maybe it won't be since the townies are unnerved by the vampire invasion) he will try to force the door open and get the supplies needed.

Here's a strength roll just in case...

Victor easily breaks the door open, and gains access to the general store. Inside, you hear a squeak in fright from behind the counter, then a saloon girl stands up, a shaking double barrel shotgun in her hands. She can't see much of you. You likely look like a creature of darkness from the angle.
Aug 19, 2024 9:59 pm
Victor raises an arm in surrender. I'm not here to hurt you," he says hurriedly. "We are going to set the train ablaze, and I need supplies. Didn't you hear me shouting a warning? You have to get out of here little lady and run someplace safe. I'll be getting those supplies now, so git!"

She's shaking even harder. "Okay." She pauses a second, unsure what to do but understanding that Victor isn't one of those monsters, then she decides, grabs a box of shells and runs out the back door.

Smart cookie, he thinks as he sets about grabbing kerosene, and a few coils of rope that he throws over his shoulder while hefting the flammable liquid in his other hand, having already sheathed his Big 50. At the last minute he remembers he needs a lighter, curses under his breath and goes back inside, rummaging around where he thinks one would be, and heads back out toward the others.

"Get it moving!" Dirt calls to the man, as he goes about gathering supplies! He’s holding the door closed with his hands for now, but he doubts he could beat what’s inside in a contest of strength.

Still, he had beaten the train into submission once before with his bare hands!

"We need some chain or rope to maybe tie the doors closed. Place some dynamite under the train's carriage and make a kerosene trail to a place of safety. Light the mach and watch it go boom." She helps Reverend to make sure he doesn't suffer any more wounds before their plan is finished.
Aug 20, 2024 4:54 am
The Reverend limps into the store when the coast is clear, and he sets about finding some mining or demolition charges. He sets about finding some dynamite... then returns to Ruby's side for her support.

You've gathered the supplies and have everything where you want.

This night train, and it's different from the other you can tell easy enough, also consists of an engine and tender, two sleeper cars, and a freight car. It has an ominous, palpable feel, much of its exposed metal is rusted to an almost blood red hue and pieces appear to have been torn off, leaving jagged metal protrusions. If a train could be undead, this is what it would look like.

The windows on the sleeper cars have been boarded over on the outside, but iron plating has been welded undeneath the boards to seal the sunlight out.

At a safe distance, Ruby says in a low voice, "Let's get this over with." They work in pairs to tie the ropes and chains over the boarded up windows and any doors to trap the fiends inside, while one member lays the dynamite.

"Make sure you get out of the way! This thing could go all over town! In pieces, with any hope…" he adds, sure that much of the night would be spent running about the place with buckets of water! At least the townsfolk could come out of hiding and help with that part!
Aug 21, 2024 5:55 pm
"Well Rev, the dynamite was your idea. Why doncha do the honors while we help Ruby secure the doors so none of them monsters get out?"

Kane shivers when Dirt mentions pieces. That was a horrible thought and one he hoped to forget quickly as he got busy with the doors and windows.

The bloodied Preacher nods and sets about placing the dynamite -- here and there, under and on the train. The engine he packs with the stuff. If the blast doesn't kill a single vampire, it will for damned sure wreck the locomotive. This train's days of carrying the undead from town to town will be over...

The chains rattle against the sleeper cars and soon you're feeling someone or something slamming against the door. As the Rev places way to much dynamite around the engine and under the cars, you struggle to hold the chained and rope-tied doors closed. More of em pound against the doors. How many of them are there anyway?

When it's all set and the fuse lit, you run taking shelter behind the station house from any direct debris but still running farther and farther.

The dynamite explodes!

A thunderous wave collapses the station house and the telegraph. The water tower collapses. A hellstorm of kindling and burning metal rips through the town. Above it all, the wailing scream of the ghost rock stores combusting in the engine sounds like the Devil's own are coming for your innards!

You collapse to the ground, a rain of train parts and wood framing rattling down around you.

When the smoke clears you see a single vampire stalking toward you in the grim hellscape. This one seems different. Older. Meaner.

He comes!

Ruby is up.

Ruby is momentarily dazed from the shockwave and lies on her back staring up at the night sky. Smoke is starting to blot out the stars. With a grown she sits up, dusts herself off as best she can. When she stands up, she sees a lone vampire remaining and he looks pissed. She groans again. "Oh, come on! Look alive, we got one unalive bastard left!" She hid her trunk safely before the explosion but it wasn't near at hand right now. She pulls her revolver and hopes someone else has a better idea what to do. She aims for the heart and fires.

The creature strolls forward, unconcerned by your feeble weapons. "Did you think you could come into my train and disrupt my plans? I shall make each of you linger in torment for a thousand years watching all of your hopes and loves crumbled to-"

Dirt wheezes and pants heavily, as he picks himself up off of the now-littered ground.

"Guess one of em could speak the lingo!" he says, letting the adrenaline flood and then leave his body. He slumps down onto his arse in the dust.

"Hell of a shot, Ms. Reyes! Didn’t like the sound of what he was saying!"

The fiery explosion flattens several buildings in town as surely as it obliterates the vampire train, and a truer bullet than Ruby's has never been shot.

The town of Dandridge is safe, but when the smoke clears and the dust settles... Reverend James Turner does not rise again.

RIP Rev!

Ruby's jaw drops. She figured her shot wouldn't have much impact other than slowing it down while the others came up with a more effective plan. She looks at her gun half in wonder. She feels like she should say something important, something memorable, but nothing comes to mind. All she manages is a response to dirt.

"Uh, thanks."

A thought comes to her and she looks at the small pile of ashes that is all that remains. "Don't bring fangs to a gun fight!" She nods to herself. That was the best she could come up with but it wasn't half bad.

"Where is everyone? Kane? Rev?" she looks around.

There are only two other survivors in the town, such was the frenzy of the vampires. Both of them, Edith Darton who hid in the bank, and Allan Lewis, a terrified deputy in the Marshalls office who may never recover his wits, thank you profoundly, and vow to leave for greener pastures.

The posse of bank robbers disappeared in the night, after helping themselves to the payroll that was in the bank.

As to you, you don't hear about another Night Train. At least, not for a few years, but that, folks, will be a different story.

The End
