Chapter 3: Advent of the Avalanche Lords

Hakan escapes the beast's jaws, though he somehow manages to turn a task that should have been relatively easy look like he barely managed it. Frustrated, the adrenaline causing the veins in his temple to pump furiously, he waves his hands as he mutters a few arcane words. The icy smoke and fog begins to condense near one of the serpents; as the spell takes effect, Hakan's eyes widen and his face lights up with sadistic glee, so much so he barely remembers to shout out a warning.

"Hold your breath!"
OOC:
A single acidic, poisonous cloud appears with a radius of 20’ centered on a target of the caster’s choosing. For 2d4+4 rounds, targets in the cloud suffer a -2 penalty to all rolls (attacks, damage, skills, and saves), take 2 points of damage each round, and must make a Fort save when first exposed or be poisoned (-1d4 Agility, duration 1 day). The caster can direct the cloud by concentrating; it moves up to 50’ per round at their command.

Evadare and Hyde hack ineffectively at the serpents. Tim scorches one of the beasts with flames, while Hakan blankets the area with poisonous fog, afflicting one of the serpents. Honey attempts to hypnotize one of the creatures with her gaze but it resists her magic.

The serpents snap their jaws at Hakan and Hyde. The wizard takes another hit, but the weakend snake doesn't even graze his flesh.
OOC:
No damage to Hakan but he still must attempt a Reflex save DC 7 or be swallowed whole. Everybody may act.

Not one to be dissuaded from a course of action, Evadare shifts the grip on his blade before leaping back into the fray. There is no hiding in the tundra, so an overwhelmingly direct assault is the only clear choice.

Luck may be on his side, but today luck is shivering and tired. Evadare makes a good strike, driving his blade deep into the serpent trying to eat Hyde!
OOC:
Oops, should have been a +1d6 instead of +2d3. Read the wrong crit table leaving for the gym. Corrected below.
Leaving a nasty scar!

Sister Honey sees the serpent attempt another swallow of the wizard, whom she has come to accept as one of her flock, and rushes in to pull him out of range. She chants her healing prayer over him as she does.
OOC:
Hakan may heal 3HD unless he is lawful, then it’s just 2HD.
And Honey will drag him to cover if possible.

Barely dodging the beast's jaws this time, Hakan realizes his magic alone will not save the day. As Honey pulls him away to safety, he slashes wildly with his dagger, in a desperate attempt to end this fight as soon as possible.
OOC:
Burning 2 Luck to make that saving throw

Second critical hit in a row! Hakan clearly is a closeted fighter...
Result: Opportunistic strike. Inflict +1d3 damage with this strike.

Having successfully discharged Flaming Hands today, a relief after yesterday's frigid failure, Tim invokes the incantation once more. While flames do manage to emerge from his fingertips, it would seem that the cold is having an affect, for they aren't as powerful.

Lots of critical hits are dealt out as Evadare, Hyde, and Hakan hack and slash at one of the serpents. As Tim scorches it with more fire, it collapses into the snow and lies still, burnt and bleeding!

The other serpent maintains its composure as it tries to bite Hyde again, focusing on him as the biggest threat thanks to his mighty attack! The sellsword avoids its snapping jaws!

The poisonous cloud continues to sap the serpent's strength.
OOC:
Everybody may act!

The serpent's thrashing and thick scales ensure Hakan his spider familiar would only be at risk if it were involved in this fight without being able to offer much help. Instead, he focuses on controlling the magical energies of the acidic cloud as it slowly saps the monster's energy and, testing his luck, tries another swing of his blade.

Attack, Damage if applicable - (d20, d4)

d20 : (6) = 6

d4 : (4) = 4

The cleric, at a safe distance from the serpentine threat, feels no desire to rush into the fray. She does, however, see the opportunity to send a crossbow bolt through its neck when it rears up for its next attack.
OOC:
To avoid firing into melee, Honey will wait until she can aim well above Hyde.

Tim is pleased to see that one of the serpents has been slain. Noting Honey's crossbow shot at the other serpent, Tim opts to do likewise and fire his bow safely away from where Hyde stands. But the cold is getting to him and his shot goes wide, lost in the snow.

The serpent's scaly hide proves thick and hard to pierce, but Hyde delivers a powerful chop, causing cold blood to spurt from the wound. The snake hisses and turns on the fighter, closing its jaws around him!

"Hyyyyyyde!!!" cries out Evadare as he increases the ferocity of his unskilled assault! Immediately, the crosshilt becomes entangled in his shoulder straps; before long, and with no reasonable explanation, the sword is fully within his leather armor crossing over his back. His face turns bright red, and he looks around sheepishly despite the melee ongoing around him.
Functional Brick says:
Your weapon becomes entangled in your armor. You must spend your next round untangling them. In addition, your armor bonus is reduced by 1 until you spend 10 minutes refitting the tangled buckles and straps.

When Tim went to fire his bow, he tripped over a branch hidden in the snow. Not only did he miss the snow serpent, but he stumbled and fell and is now lying prone in the snow.

The wily cleric of chaos calls upon forces of undoing to make her eyes a hypnotic kaleidoscope of power.
OOC:
Results: Making brief eye contact with one target, the cleric forces it to stare into the swirling hypnotics of her gaze. The target receives a Will save. If it fails, then the cleric can break contact and the target remains
hypnotized for 1d6+CL rounds or until the hypnosis is broken. An attack or other physical trauma (including a vigorous shaking by an ally) will break the hypnosis. While the target is hypnotized, it acts on commands issued by the cleric, although it performs them as if a drugged zombie, moving at half-speed and taking a -2 penalty to all actions. The commands can be of any type, even those that are self-destructive. The target is considered to have animal-level intelligence while affected, so its ability to execute complex instructions (or cast spells, if it is a spellcaster) will be inhibited.
Sister Honey locks her ensorcled gaze upon the serpent and commands, "Cease your attacks! Lie down and play dead lest we make it so!"
OOC:
DC19 Will save from sneaky snek
