Literally, actually, I've been known to roll my dice behind the DM Screen IRL for no reason, just to make sure the players don't read anything into it when I DO have a reason. I guess it's kinda nice to have a PbP equivalent to that practice.
That is, frankly, a great idea!

Glad to be of service. You udnderstand, that part of the DM/Player compact is that providing terror is a two-way street BWAHAHAHAAHA

On my screen, the thing you referenced is in a "Privately" box. Everyone else, please look at this post: https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/33995/?p=1684335#p1684335 Do any of you see a paragraph at the bottom that starts with the words, "That should be fine"?

I personally think that secrecy (related to narrative, not dice) is overrated. 5e is not a game designed around secrets. The best 5e role-play experience I've had at the table were when our characters had secrets between them, but we as players knew everything are role-played accordingly.
Nevertheless I confirm and commit to keep in secret everything DM will ask me to and by default answer with a private note to private note and roll secretly when asked to.

P.S. If you prefer "roll behind DM screen" as a DM you could do all your rolling with physical dice on your table and and only share the narrative with players.

I believe I owe you an apology, @Dipper. I did not see a private box around what you sent, but may not mean it wasn't. Which is confusing.

Okay, I got clarification from The Powers That Be. Apparently when you do private, it does not put the text in a box or distinguish it in any meaningful way. The reason is actually pretty cool - it's so that I can mess with you guys and put things into my posts that you have no idea no one else saw. This is pretty awesome because, when I did the god information stuff, I reposted it multiple times to prevent people from knowing they were getting information about the same god, but apparently I didn't need to do that, because you don't see each other's names.

The reason I did not know it worked that way is because, as DM, it puts everyone's private messages in a box for me so that I see everything going on in the forum.

Now the existence of a note field makes a lot more sense - for those times when you WANT it to be in a box. And apparently if I'm concerned about others being aware of the existence of the box, I just put the note field inside a private field. ;)

OOOOooooh. That is cool. I mean, if you're a depravedly wicked DM, I mean. Of course. Nevermind. /me whistles innocently.

I could see you guys using that with each other as well. Perhaps one of you whispers something to another, or gives someone a look surreptitiously. You can make it look absolutely clean on your screens, and since I'm aware of it, I can roll Perception for everyone else and only make the people who pass the threshold informed.

(Side note, I don't suppose it much matters to you guys, but I don't believe in Passive Perception or any other passive skills in PbP. The spirit of it, far as I can tell, was to not have a physical die roll at the table tip people off to things, and in PbP that's a nonissue because you can't see me rolling anyway. So for better or for worse, you always get rolls. And then if you ask for/make rolls on top of the one I made for you, I just go with whichever one is higher, so it's like you give yourselves advantage by consciously being on the lookout.)

Now that we know that nothing is private from YOU, oh mighty DM, that should afford us a bit of freedom.

Avraham sent a note to GreyWord
All players other than Dipper, can you see how many questions I asked and to whom?

Aaaaaaaaaaand Avraham officially starts the game with Inspiration. :) That was probably the best minute and fifty seconds of my day, right there. Might as well just go to sleep, nothing's topping that.

Um, Avraham, I don't see any secret text aimed my way, nor any question about the number 7

I can only see you sent a note to Grey, and that's it.

Aisede says:

That question about the number 7 was the private text. You can see why Avraham didn't realize no one else could see it.

•_• I... Hadn't realized that was secret text. There was no bracket or [secret] bubble or any indicator that was secret text. Or a "note", here, I beleive it's called.

Exactly.

I think this is how it works:
TypeSenderRecipientOthers
PrivateSees Box around textSees regular text (cannot tell it was private)Sees Nothing
NoteSees Box around textSees Box around text (can tell it was privateSees Box with recipient name and nothing else
Note inside BoxSees two boxes around textSees Box around text (can tell it was privateSees Nothing

And the DM sees everything and all the necessary boxes so s/he can tell if we sent private messages to each other.

How do you make a note within a box? Like... How do you make the box?

I see Test 1 and Test 2 in a note box, and that you sent a note to @Dipper but not what is in it.

Note n a box is a note inside a "private" tag. Sorry I wasn’t clearer.
Aug 2, 2024 10:56 pm
Yes. I can now tell that you sent me something privately because you used Note. I cannot tell if you wrapped THAT in a private box. Only @Dipper can. However, IF you did, all anyone else sees is an empty message, so they have no idea WHO was the target. Most of the time, Dipper will be the target.

I’m thinking of use cases like the following. Let’s assume you and I both know Dwarvish. I can say "I talk to Aisede in a foreign tongue" and send you a note box inside which says Dwarvish and the message. Then our diabolical DM can roll for whether anyone else recognizes the language and understand it. Even worse, maybe @GreyWord character knows Dwarvish, but we don’t know that. Dipper can use a private box to tell GW what we said and we will have no idea we were overheard.

Yup, this is going to mix VERY well with my language rules. RIP my old way of doing it, which involved using code ciphers and giving the decoding sequence to the people who spoke it. :)
