As the baron speaks, Eirika looks closely at him. Registering and memorizing all he says and does.
Eirika frowns a little at the last part of the explanation.

"I understand your desire to deal with this privately... For you do seem a quite agitated by this. However, discipline in private? Is that allowed and desirable?
I am quite willing to solve this intrigueing puzzle, but I do want to make sure that any suspects will be dealt with in a fair manner."

Sylvanor nods as he agree to the task, but find proper time to ask question that may sound strange to a human Would it be morally acceptable to also interview any pet in the manor, assuming there are some?

Kyle's ears perk up at the mention of missing valuables. Catch a thief, eh? Interesting times. Four thefts, six people, no two present at the same time. Sounds like a logic puzzle just suited for our scientist of the arcane. Kyle took another glass of wine. Last one, he thought, I can't let my guard down, even here.

Bowing in the direction of the Baron, Kyle begins, Your Excellency, the assignment seems eminently suitable, at least for me. Far be it from me to jump to conclusions, but I hope that a satisfactory resolution for his Excellency would manifest in a satisfactory resolution for the assemblage? Kyle coughs uncomfortably when he realizes what he just said, especially in light of the Baron's increasing irritability. Hurrying on, he adds Your Excellency, I note that you started your sequester the day after the last theft. Have you considered that one of the conspirators—and it seems likely there is more than one person involved—may have left the day of the last theft?

Ah yes - the carriage problem. He had me stewing over the problem and when I had an answer, he would change something. Like the 5 people were human criminals and the 1 person was a tiefling. Or the 5 was old and weak from a long hard life, while the 1 was young with her whole life ahead of her.

Seeing more of Nyx's wild side he wonders if she is too much of a wildling, or if that is exactly what he needs. If so Rubert should goat his loins somewhere else.

Hal lifts out a necklace. On are 3 strings bound with multiple knots. Do you all know this tradition? I have here 3 secrets where I have bound myself to secrecy. I will take a fourth and let the baron untie it when secrecy is no longer warranted.
"Honor. Treat others with fairness, and let your honourable deeds be an example to them. Do as much good as possible while causing the least amount of harm. Keep your word, honor your bargains but know when not to make one, or give your word". Is this one of those times I should not give my word? No!

I understand that the baron is in a very uncomfortable position. But these are his lands and it is his duty to sit in judgement, unless there is a magistrate.

When Hal displays his necklace, with its three knots, she finds the smile she lost at the Barons harsh words and gives it to Hal. Sweet and honorable for true, perhaps.

Baron Brynn Treymane
Baron Treymane ignores Tante's attempt to divert the conversation back towards Provos, and either doesn't notice or doesn't comment on the effect his words brought to Nyx - though the tilt of his mouth curls and he nods respectfully in response to her question about the nature of the stolen items. "Indeed. The heart of the matter," he tells her, "and perhaps you'll see a pattern within the details that currently eludes all of us. This is what we've experienced..."
.
.
.

The Necklace
"The first item to go missing was an emerald medallion. I was hosting a birthday party for my daughter, Cherdrianna. As I'd indicated, all of my family and household staff were present for all four occasions, including this one. Additionally, my daughter had a number of friends present, and several dignitaries and their families whom I associate with in the Queen's Court made the gesture of coming out to me to offer their respects.

We had just finished a game of cricket, and Cher thought it would be fun for some of her friends to go on a gryphon ride; my groundskeeper, Dervoran, is really a remarkable animal handler and he's raised this gryphon from an egg. The sky was starting to get overcast, but we were fairly certain that if we hurried we could give everyone at least one or two circles around the grounds before it started raining. The owner of the necklace, a girl named Tinnah Shault, was the sixth guest in line for the ride. She went up on the gryphon with Dervoran whilst wearing the necklace, but when she came back down, it was missing.

At the time, we didn't even think of it as a theft; no one could be a hundred percent sure that she was wearing it on the way up, although most were pretty sure. And how easy would it have been to fall off the girl's neck in midair and end up in the grove? But as the weeks went on and other things began disappearing, we began to see this as the spot where it all began."

The Spear
"The second object was an enchanted spear. My elder son, Xanth, served as best man to a friend of his named Jareb Bauchett, and they had identical magical spears carved for themselves during the bachelor party to mark the occasion. I've always been fond of the boy, and my son... he's been having a rough time of late, falling in with the wrong crowds. So, I offered to host the wedding on my estate and to perform the ceremony, as a present to Jareb and his intended, and also to encourage their friendship with my son.

As before, the incident occurred outdoors, towards the end of the celebration, just as the reception was winding down. The boys wanted to have a boar hunt, with the idea that the meat would be preserved and served during the couple's first anniversary. I think there was also something of a... libido-related component to the whole affair, to be honest. Something about working up an appetite for consummation with his bride or some such. You know lads and their inside jokes, I didn't get more than a whiff of it. But in any case, the ladies and those of us old fogeys who're beyond our hunting years, we adjourned to the dining room for tea whilst they went on their hunt.

What I'm told is that Jareb threw his spear and felled the boar, and everyone did some congratulating of him - their attention on him, and not the boar's carcass. When they approached it, the spear had already been removed from it. It was nowhere to be found."

The Money Pouch
"The third incident was two days later, and was easily the most blatant theft of them all. There was no party that evening; merely a few of Xanth's friends gathered around the table in the upstairs hall, playing poker. They'd been at it for a couple of hours; you know how it is with games of chance, the allure of risk and reward can be very strong. One of the bets got quite serious, with my son and his friend Marthell the only players remaining in something of a bidding war for a very large pot.

Quite suddenly, the torchlight in the room just... stopped. Pitch blackness fell over the group of them, even though the crackling of the wood could still be heard. When the light returned, the betting pile on the table was gone. The boys spent quite a bit of time accusing each other before approaching me, and finally, at my insistence, each and every one of them was searched, but of course they all had gold on them since they were there for the poker game. The small grey pouch, the only real hint at the gold that had been on the table, wasn't found on any of them."

The Chalice
"By then, it was obvious that the thieving was deliberate, but I hoped it was just one of Xanth's friends. A bad seed that I could simply explain away. When this latest incident occurred, however... that's when I knew I needed help.

It was two weeks later. A diplomatic envoy from Thor'Dael was coming to dine with us, and discuss a possible increase in our shipments of Elderberry Wine. They were offering it at something of a premium, considering their war effort, and it was an opportunity to make quite a substantial profit from the arrangement. A paranoid and proud woman, the lead negotiator, Melian Findis, brought along a prized goblet made from silver dragonscales. According to her, its been in her family for generations, and the matriarchs of her family have, by tradition, never drunk out of anything else for fear that poison would take them as it took some of their ancestors. Personally, I think that's a load of hogwash and she just likes to show off the dragonscales to flaunt her family's long association with the dragon Yltrethianaxikai.

In any case, as I'm sure is obvious, the goblet is what was stolen. The Ambassador and her staff, my family and my staff were the only ones present in the home. She was furious at its disappearance, and has told me in no uncertain terms that our business ventures are indefinitely paused until that chalice resurfaces. She left in a huff the day after it disappeared, and I sequestered everyone to the grounds. No one has left them, not even myself, until I came to see you today."

Tale told, the Baron turns his attention to entertaining questions. "I've no objection to you interviewing the gryphon," he says to Sylvanor, "if you're in possession of such an ability. We've also a few hounds in the groundskeeper's stables, I believe a couple were taken on the hunt."

He smiles at Erikia. "Your concern for the welfare of those dearest to me, though you know nothing of them, pleases me greatly. I assure you that I'm a fair man... if one of my household staff is responsible, they will be dismissed from my service and probably lashed, but their lives are not in danger." His smile turns to a scowl. "If it's someone in my family... that is a more delicate matter. I honestly have no idea what I'll do."

Rupert's first question produces a genuinely mirthful laugh. "Aha! The true businessman reveals himself." His laughter dies down, and he nods once, his head dipping deeply. "Remuneration is my specialty, and indeed one of the reasons this is so troubling... everyone in my employ has been there at least a year, and well-paid. It is hard to accept that those who have become almost familial to me could be responsible for something like this, but no other logical explanation fits at this point."

"As to your compensation... if a monetary consideration is what you desire, then I'll see to it that you're aptly satisfied. However, if an alternate form of payment might be of interest to some of you, well... I am a man of considerable influence, and my favor can reach most corners of this kingdom. Once I owe you a favor, you need but ask." He finishes his wine, putting the glass aside. "Tonight, you dine with everyone, and the subject of the thefts will not be broached during the dinner. I'd prefer you get a sense of them, and they get a sense of you, before your investigation begins. Which reminds me - I'll restate this at dinner for everyone's comfort, but I do mean it when I say it - only the guilty party's affairs are my concern. Nothing else anyone tells you at interview is to make its way back to my ears; my family values its privacy, and I will respect such."

He rises from the table, making it clear that, as far as he's concerned, the conversation is over for now. "Now... take the day to enjoy the city, and a carriage will swing by here an hour before sundown to bring you to the manor. We will speak more of this after dinner, as I'll be your first interview. Once you come onto the manor grounds, you will also be subject to the sequester, so if you've any urgent business in Greywater... now's the time. I, personally, will spend a half hour with my friends out there to keep up appearances, and then stop briefly at the city council chambers to see to my affairs before returning home. I imagine a few people have noted my absence already, and since I had to break quarantine to come here I might as well make good use of the time and show the flag around a bit."
OOC:
The group is free to split up and open play for awhile, talk it out with each other, do any town investigation, or just time lapse to the carriage. Whatever you want. If you're doing anything that doesn't involve the group as a whole, please make sure you post in private tags only to those members of the group that travel with you. I will make sure you are kept abreast of how much time you have before needing to return here.

Hal sits and ponders the stories. Miss Wintersun, I feel that your expertise is going to be very much needed. The way the poker game was tolled it sounded like magical darkness was involved since they could hear to torch still burning.

Two thefts outdoors and two indoors.

He shakes himself out of his reverie. What are you going to do until the wagon come for us?

Eirika listens closely to the Baron's stories, occasionally nodding and registering the story and the information provided.

"Thank you for your confidence, Mr. Rook," Eirika says. "I do enjoy a challenging mystery. However, I am hardly the person to lead an interrogation of a criminal suspect. But yes, I agree that I might know a few spells that might prove most useful."

She holds quiet for a moment.

"I don't have any plans yet."

I will observe, just as we agreed with Provos. Will be back few hours before sundown, don't want to miss or delay the carriage .

Without further explanations Sylvanor leave the tavern

Kyle listened attentively as the Baron described his predicament, focusing on both what the Baron said and how he says it. He blushed as the Baron playfully called out his mercenary question, but quickly focused on the answer. My training should be useful here, and favors from the nobility may be the most powerful currency of all—especially in my predicament, he thought.

Kyle stretched and cracked his back, which had settled while the Baron spoke. Watching the elf leave—nearly flee—the tavern, Kyle briefly wondered. Perhaps he just doesn't like cities. Or even people, Kyle thought considering the elves frozen responses to Kyle's questions in a foreign tongue.

Forgoing a third glass of the excellent vintage, but fortifying himself with a square of some remarkably pungent blue cheese, Kyle approached the remarkably logical and, to be honest, strikingly beautiful but somewhat aloof blonde. Already, he had a list of questions about the stories, although he knew now was not the time to ask the Baron directly, especially as the latter had signaled the end of the conversation by leaving his seat. However, Ms. Wintersun seemed to be the person whose mind could focus most closely on these kinds of problems.

Waiting until she responded to Hal, Kyle began, Miss Wintersun? Or Eirika if I may? What did you think of the Baron's story? I noted some absences in the description. For example, did anyone see Tinnah mount the gryphon with the necklace, or could it have already been removed whilst she waited on line? Are we certain the spear thrown by Xanth was the enchanted one, or could it have been switched even earlier? With the poker game, did the lights actually go out or did the participants simply lose their vision temporarily. If the former, the thief would have to have had a familiarity with the room and its layout. If the latter, well, any yokel could have taken the money. Lastly, the Baron did not describe how the goblet was taken or from where. Simply that it was. I find that…unsatisfying. While we have plenty of time to think, especially once we enter the manor and are sequestered, I would appreciate your considered thoughts on the matter, m'lady. Kyle took another bite of the cheese and glanced around to see if anyone else was listening.

I wouldn't say no to a walk about, just to see what this town has to offer. Nyx takes a few apples an slips them in her pocket as she passes the sideboard. And if anybody has any desire to walk with me I would welcome the company, if not I'll be just fine on my own. She does still have a small smile and her head is held high, as if trying to put forward the impression that she doesn't care either way.
Aug 9, 2024 6:36 pm
Happy to walk with you, Red.

Lude picked up an apple from the sideboard as well.

Once she got out of hearing of the Baron and/or any servants, she remarked:

Notice how expansive the Baron was on every other question but when asked how he knew Provos, nothing? That makes me curious if there's something behind it. With the nobility, what they don't say is often more important than what they do.

Hearing all the observations that his fellow detectives already have, Hal stands to leave the inn.
I'm very confident that we will solve this mystery.
I would love to see the city though your eyes Miss Nyx. Yours as well Miss Lude

"If we are going to work together, Rolant, we'd best start calling each other by our first names, I guess," Eirika says to Rupert. "You make interesting observations and of course the same questions have arrisen with me."

She frowns for a moment.

"I do believe Tinnah's necklace might be the best clue we have. If she mounted the griffon with the necklace on, then she was alone with Dervoran for a while. I truely believe he is the first suspect under investigation. But that indeed is under the assumption that she mounted the griffon wearing the necklace. If it was taken from her neck at the party... each object vanished among the presence of many people."

Or were vanished using a spell, though the range needed to steal from griffin back boggles the mind.

Rolant, Rupert, both are just as good. Maybe I’ll use that in the next town in which I need to lay low. Kyle nods as Eirika explains her thoughts. However, as Tante Lude makes her observation, Kyle’s brow furrows and he frowns. My instincts do not run that way, but you are correct, Madam Lude. Or is it Mother Lude? This adds an entirely new level of complexity. If any stage, such as the casing, the entry, the theft, or the extraction were done by magic, it makes it less likely this was an inside job. As his mind processes Tante Lude’s observation, Kyle doesn’t precisely notice that he has slipped into more technical jargon.

Seeing that Tante Lude is leaving with Nyx and Hal, Kyle continues, While I would love to pick your brain further, I don’t wish to keep you. Actually, if you don’t mind, I’d like to tag along as all of you explore the town, Kyle says, realizing that both safety and anonymity lie in numbers, and that going with Nyx, Hal, and Tante Lude would keep him in the largest group.
Aug 10, 2024 2:49 am
When Tante offers to join Nyx on her walk through town Nyx is overjoyed, and when Hall and Rupert also seem to be joining she is almost, amazed in her demeanor.

When the Baron was telling us of the first few thefts, that were outside, I thought perhaps a Druid might be the cause. Able to shape shift into an animal to hide their trail, but I do not believe Druids can cast darkness?
Aug 10, 2024 7:30 am
"It is very possible that magic is involved here. A spell lile darkness, or worse, illusions, can easily be used to commit crimes and get away with it." Eirika says. She gazes in thought in the distance. "And even then, it is possible that not all events are connected. The bag of gold was probably intentional, as the room went dark. However, the necklace could still just have been accidentally lost."

"I'll take the walk with you."
Aug 10, 2024 11:55 am
Tante or Aunt if you prefer. Lude said with a low throaty laugh. I do not have children nor am I the leader of a chapter house. I am responsible to myself alone, thank you

While we should definitely talk to this Derovan and the other servants, don't dismiss other possibilities. Trickster spirits like a kitsune would pull stunts like this to cause Chaos for their own amusement or darker ends. And, there is still the possibility that it is the Baron or his family and that he is covering things up to avoid scandal and loss of standing. It might be worth checking, VERY discreetly, into whether he or his family has been running up debts.

Any possibilities that I am missing?

Hal, a young man with a sturdy build and an aura of quiet determination, walked through the town's bustling streets. The cobblestone streets were lined with quaint, timber-framed buildings, their thatched roofs forming a patchwork against the sky. The sun was beginning its descent, casting a warm, golden glow over everything, while the distant sounds of vendors hawking their wares and children laughing created a lively atmosphere.

As they walked, Hal pointed out a group of armored figures standing near the town square, their shining plate armor catching the light. Those are my brother, paladins to Jadanan, he says to Nyx, Eirika and Tante Lude, his voice tinged with a mix of admiration and a hint of envy. They've taken their oaths and have fully embraced their duty.

Nyx glanced at the paladins, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied them. And you haven’t? she asked.
OOC:
I narrated a little bit on your behalf Arrcher101. Hope you don't mind
Hal shook his head, his gaze lingering on the paladins, who were now deep in conversation with a group of townsfolk. Not yet, he admitted. I’ve trained with them and Father Cadfael, learned the ways of Jadanan's Light, but I’m not ready to take the oath. There’s something... something I need to find within myself first. An Oath is a serious thing and I'm not sure that I really understand what I would be renouncing.
