Shadow Mastiff
The hounds run up to those on the first floor. One of them howls in a way that sends shivers down your spine, but only Xha seems to be terrified by it. The other 3 attempt to bite the king, Travail, or Xha, but none find a good perch to latch their jaw onto.

Bone Knight
The knights all dash up to someone, preparing greatswords for their attacks next turn.
OOC:
@annex you are up, and then the skeleton brutes will go.

Travail's fingers formed arcane signs as a fascinating mass of otherworldly colours appeared above the king. It seemed almost coherent, like you could almost make out what it was supposed to be, and it made you hooked on figuring it out. While the attackers might find it hypnotic, the mind mage ensured he and his associates weren't the least bit interested.

Should one of the attackers also find the pretty lights uninteresting, a writhing globular protuberance forced its way into the mortal realm from somewhere other to lash it into terror!

Options, Xcha? Make a break for it outside or stand and fight here? Travail asked the dragonborn warrior mentally.

to catch every enemy within 15 feet of the king, so every bad guy except the Brutes on the outskirts.
Spending a sorcery point for Careful Spell: up to 5 creatures (me and all allies, naturally) automatically succeed on the saving throw of a spell you cast.
If any of the (in order of importance) knights or the hounds aren't fascinated, can I choose which one must make a DC 20 CHA saving throw or take the psychic damage below and become frightened of Travail until the start of my next turn? I was hoping not to have to get in melee range but I'll put this Far Realm Shard to good use!
Holding off on any movements until I see how well the charm worked or not.

The shard says "you can cause a slimy tentacle to rip through the fabric of reality and strike one creature you can see within 30 feet of you". It doesn't really say "that can you can choose" but also doesn't make it seem random, so I'll say you choose the target, yes.

Only 2 make the save. BK2 and SM1. You are pretty sure on their next turn that they are going to slap people out of the stuper, who can then do the same for others. So essentially most of the enemies on the lower floor will lose their turn, and this will last only 1 round. Enemies of the same name go all at once like players who aren't separated by enemies, so they go in the order that is most convenient just like players can go in the order they like each round if no enemies interrupt.

@forkbeard did you mean BK2? SM4 is hypnotized and not a threat unless it gets woken up.
Aug 22, 2024 1:38 pm
OOC:
@forkbeard why are you taking a turn? you went first and dodged due to 48 hours passing, it wasn't "delaying your turn". You don't go until after the skeleton brutes and all the rest of the PCs. I'm going to ignore your turn. Not being mean, just keeping initiative.

Skeleton Brute

The skeleton brutes march forward, eyes glowing and heavy looking great axes dragging along the ground scratching the nice floor. the ones on the east actually seem to go for Crow and Bells, while the ones on the west spring towards the stairs. The ones that attack seem to use some kind of technique that doesn't help them land their hit but increase the momentum of the swing for a potentially deadlier cut.
OOC:
Crow takes 31 damage
Bells takes 24 damage
Both of you make a DC 14 Stregth save or get knocked prone by the weight of the downward swing.
You both fail and are knocked prone.

@Basil Those attacks should all have been made at disadvantage. Quote about ranged attack in melee:
[ +- ] Ranged Attacks in Close Combat
Now, to be fair, these guys have an AC so low you need a nat 1 to miss them, but since that is possible I'm going to roll 5 d20s, and if any area a nat 1 the corresponding attack actually missed. I am rolling 5 as 1 was a nat 1 already. If none are a nat1, all but the earlier nat 1 hit.

Update: they all still hit. In the future, if you are attacking an enemy and will push them away so that this isn't an issue on later attacks, roll disadvantage on them all and if it wasn't necessary i'll use the left number as the result for the normal roll.

OOC:
Think of it like the monster was threatening to bring its axe down on you every shot you made so you couldn't help but use the corner of your eye to not give it the chance to do that. Or, if that doesn't work, imagine the monster is still swinging its weapon at you, but only the one earlier counts towards maybe dealing damage, so while you are shooting you are sidestepping multiple swings.

Bells' head was artfully tilted to catch the most of the light as she waited for an eruption of accolades as the last of the notes of the ballad faded away but such appreciation never came as her moment was stolen by a band in the raggy-ass costumes. Who couldn't see those dents? Tacky!

And the theme "Undead"? Really? Cliche! So in addition to bad timing and taste, the "skeleton" had shown little judgement attacking what must appear to be the entertainment over a dragonborn? In most cases a bad call but in this instance the least bonehead thing he could have done. If the bard had not found herself knocked to the ground, Bells would have slipped over the balcony to reach the king to escape to safety but now?

It had been a reflexive reaction to throw her arm up to protect her head as that large blade threatened removal of arguably one of her best features but now blood soaked what use to be a beautiful illusion as the bard laid crumpled on the ground. It had been a hard blow to take for someone that tried not to break a nail during combat. But bless... Crow? It must have been Crow that just pushed away the brute so Bells could pull herself to her feet using the railing as support.

The view between the columns did not soothe the bard as she regained her footing. The king along with her troupe were surrounded, with reinforcments from the far balcony fast approaching to bolster numbers that already favored the enemy. Something was needed to even the odds! With a museum of items to pull from the next song out of her lips did nothing less than breathe life into the relics on display as she cast Animate Objects.
[ +- ] 5th level transmutation
A button or a broach, it didn't matter. All were possible weapons with the bard's magic as six items swarmed SM1 while another four found BK2 as the only enemies close to the king not blankly staring into the air.

Nodding in satisfaction that allies had been added to protect the king, the bard whispered "encore". In a flash the bloodied dress was replaced with a gleaming set of armor with scrolls filled with notes etched across the surface. Bells tossed her hair over her shoulder while her hands formed fist to rest on her hips. "Look to me, my friends, and know that victory will be ours. Gods save the king!"
