Talking About the Weather (RP)

There is a flicker of a reaction at your words 'that dreary routine', but Elliot tries to hide it. Mainly he is trying to hide, even from himself, that all his own 'dreaming of adventure, of doing something strange, and unknown' has lead him back to life of equally dreary routine.

"Yes." He says, as though this was his plan all along. "There is a ball tomorrow night. All the movers and shakers will be there. How would you like to be my plus-one?" You get the strong impression he is not asking, that turning down his invitation would be a really bad idea. But you did have plans tomorrow night, can you easily get out of them?

What do you do?

"Let’s not keep him waiting then," Benji says. "Oh, and this is Jacob, by the way. Jacob, this is Teddy. Do you mind if Jacob comes along with us, Teddy? I’m sure Elliot would be very interested to meet him."

Teddy gives Jacob a casual once-over assessment, and shrugs. Jacob does not look dangerous, and Teddy had no instructions about this sort of thing, so he will kick it up the line and let someone else deal with it. He then glances meaningfully out at the weather, possibly hoping you will take your car.

Where is Elliot's (current) penthouse in relation to your apartment? Do you take the car in this hectic traffic, or use the Tube, or walk? Where is your apartment relative to Piccadilly Circus station?

What to you do?

The vampire wasn’t so subtle about not taking no for an answer. He was so used to forcing people to do his bidding, that he didn’t stop to consider that she wouldn’t need any encouragement to attend his party. Something about ‘hammer’, and ‘nails’ came to mind.

The truth of the matter was that she wouldn’t miss a social gathering with the most powerful and influential ‘people’ in the city for the world. He was giving her precisely what she has hoped for; an introduction to the hidden, mysterious world she wanted to be a part of. The only snag was her previous commitment for tomorrow evening. David’s parents were coming over for dinner, and her absence would be a cause for much disappointment. She felt a little bit bad about it, but quickly brushed those pesky concerns aside. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She’ll just have to make it up to David some other time.

"I’m in" she didn’t bother to pretend being reluctant about it "But you’re paying for my dress!" she added a cheeky smile for effect, before getting the details from him: "Where and when, exactly?"

Jacob gives Teddy a suspicious glance, sensing that his presence is unwelcome. To ease the situation for Benji, he chooses to step back.

"Actually, I just recalled I need to locate a book for a client. I'll catch up with you later, alright, Benji?"
Aug 28, 2024 7:05 am
"All right, see you later then!" Benji waves goodbye to Jacob and trots off down the road, ignoring Teddy’s silent plea to take the car. "Come on, Teddy. It’s a good day for a walk."
OOC:
There are a few buildings around the train station that have businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors and I have been imagining Benji’s apartment is in one of them. The cheapest apartment I could find in the immediate area was on Panton Street (2 minute walk from the train station), so let’s say he lives there.

As for Elliot, there are a lot of fancy hotels in Piccadilly and the surrounding areas. Do we want to pick an existing one or invent one? In any case, it seems like it would likely be no more than a fifteen minute walk from the Piccadilly Circus train station/Benji’s apartment.

Teddy is surprisingly fastidious about his suit, and does an admirable job with the umbrella to keep the rain off, but his trouser legs are still wet by the time you get to Elliot's. You get the strong impression that Teddy is eager to use the hotel's facilities to get them dried and pressed, so he is maybe a little less decorous as he pushes through the throng outside the door, knocks and immediately enters. Announcing your arrival to the room.

There is only one other person in Elliot's meeting chamber, a woman who looks human. If there is any sign of the tension that filled the room moments ago Elliot does not show it. If the woman looks a little nervous, that is to be expected when meeting with a vampire lord.

Elliot does not bat an eyelid about buying you a dress. You don't know how much you can push this, but he gives the impression those sorts of concerns are below him.

"Someone will provide you with the details." He says dismissively, waving a hand towards the door his underlings left through. At that moment, as though summoned, the door opens and a large man pokes his head in. "Benji, m'lord." He says, standing aside to allow Benji to enter before withdrawing.

Emma sees a scruffy young man in old-fashioned clothing. He is wearing a haphazardly knotted cravat, a faded blue waistcoat, and a tattered tailcoat that is more patches than coat at this point. His clothing is covered in smudges of soot and he’s missing a chunk of his hair from the side of his head, where a freshly-healed head wound spans from his temple to the top of his ear.

"Elliot! Hi!" He bounds into the room and offers the other vampire a deep, sweeping bow. He pauses at the lowest point of the bow to smile bemusedly at Emma, upside-down. "You have a… friend?" he asks Elliot, trying to determine if this is someone he should introduce himself to or just Elliot’s dinner.

OK. Benji was definitely a vampire. He was wearing clothes that went out of style at least a century ago. And judging by the looks of his tattered attire, he's probably been wearing them for at least that long. It subverted her expectations; the vampires she read about were suave and sophisticated, not shabby-looking drifters. Or they tried to blend in, rather than sticking out like a sore thumb. But this vampire was different. Very different.

Emma herself always dressed for the occasion, being very mindful about the image she wanted to project. For her meeting with the Vampire lord, she went with a business-casual look; a pair of jeans, a buttoned up light blue blouse and a tailored off-white blazer. She was clearly a beautiful woman, but today her aim was to look polished and competent. Serious, yet not too formal.

But what image did Benji wish to project? Did he want people to underestimate him? Was he trying to convey that he didn't care about how other people perceived him? Was it a hint at his age? Did he want to drive people away? Was he a rebel? A fool?

No. She couldn't figure him out, which only made him that much more intriguing.
Maybe, that was the entire point.

"I'm Emma Harper" she introduced herself, smiling playfully at the newcomer who drew her attention from his master "And I was just leaving" she tilted her head lightly at Elliot to offer him her parting words "I'll see you tomorrow night; I'm looking forward to it"

"Ah, Benji. Yes, a new friend." Elliot says, with special emphasis on 'new' meaning more than one thing. "This is perfect. Emma, Benji can get you sorted out for the ball." He says dismissively, maybe not having noticed that Benji tends not to bother with such things, Benji should have an invitation if he cared to look. "We shouldn't be long, here."

Once Emma has left Elliot turns to you. "You know this 'Lizabeth Greenback' woman? What have you heard about what she found? Do you know where she is?" He in unlikely to believe you don't know her, but he has no real reason to suspect you of more, it is probable he knows you were playing at Piccadilly at the time she was released. Nevertheless, it is as you feared, he in interested in her... or, maybe worse, in the item she allegedly found, which makes her disposable.

What do you do?
Aug 29, 2024 1:12 pm
"Lizabeth? Yes, she’s a friend of mine," Benji answers Elliot, once they’re alone. "I’m afraid I don’t know what she found though, only that people are very worked up about it. Whatever it is, I think the police probably have it now." Eager to change the subject, he asks, "What’s this about a ball?"
Aug 29, 2024 6:19 pm
Emma had no intention of sticking around until the vampires concluded their business. She hated waiting, and 'shouldn't be long' could entail a very different time scale for two immortal beings than a mortal woman. Once she was shown out of the room, she reached out for her purse for a sticky note pad and a pen, scribbling her name in perfect cursive and adding her phone number underneath, before pasting the yellow slip of paper on the closed door.

She had better things to do with her time. It was still not too late in the afternoon. If she hurried, she should arrive home before David made it back from work, and have dinner ready for him. And then she could break the news about bailing on him and his parents, face to face.

"Hmm... what? Oh, you know, a gathering tomorrow night. Apparently to 'talk about the weather' of all things. How British!" Elliot answers your question.

You have not seen an invitation for this, though you usually get them. When last did you check your mail? If it is to talk about the weather situation, it might be a fairly recent plan. Though why vampires are being invited to something they are probably fine with —or even happy about— is unclear.

He tracks right back to the reason her summoned you here. "The police?" He says with some distaste. "You sure? Can you ask her? Lizabeth, your friend?" He is trying to sound casual, but definitely has designs on this item, whatever it is.

As though the universe has sensed your 'plans' and, as per usual, has set out to thwart them, before you can get home, you get a call from Bev. She sounds... emotional.

"I have news!" She says, trying to sound up-beat. "I actually met a vampire. And I let him feed from me. I thought you would want to know all about it. And apparently there are 'demons' too, which are quite different to vampires, like I thought!" It has been a while since you two spoke, does she know that you allowed Elliot to drink your blood?

You can sense that there is more to this call, and that Bev really wants to talk.

Now that Elliot mentions it, Benji does recall receiving a fancy-looking envelope in the mail recently, sealed with the mark of one of the Vampire Lords… He’ll have to go dig it out of his recycling bin.

"Well, I imagine that the police would have taken it off her when they arrested her, right?" Benji says. "But I can certainly ask her about it."
Aug 30, 2024 8:06 am
"Hi!" Emma was always happy to get a call from Bev. Both she and her were feeling their way in the darkness, drawn to dark secrets and perilous danger like moths to flame. These nights, she felt like Bev was one of the few people she could relate to. Someone she could talk freely about what she was going through. From the sound of Bev's voice, that sentiment was mutual.

"You did??!" she wasn't so much surprised to hear that Bev allowed a vampire to feed on her, than excited. If she hadn't told her about her own experience with Eliot, Bev might have never gathered the courage to try it herself. It was more than a little bit reprehensible on her part to be happy that they had this experience to share and talk about, and for encouraging this kind of risky behavior. But damn it, she needed someone to accompany her on this journey "Who was it?" She had so many questions, but before she could ask the next one, Bev hit her with an even greater revelation. "Really??? Demons?"

Her mind could barely come to grips with the profound metaphysical and theological implication of the exitance of demons. Did it mean that Hell existed? The Devil? God? Heaven? Maybe she should become a nun and retire to a convent then, rather than running around the city trying to to ingratiate herself with a bunch of power hungry, blood sucking, parasites. This was big. Real big. Something which could change the entire trajectory of her life. She HAD to learn more. Maybe meet with this demon.

She checked her watch as she considered what to do. She needed to talk with David tonight and let him know she wouldn't be joining dinner tomorrow. It wasn't fair to wait until the very last second to tell him. It had to be in person, and she couldn't slip out of the house right after disappointing him.

But she also really wanted to meet with Bev and get the full story from her.

Emma was usually very decisive, but right now, she felt torn and conflicted about what to do. It didn't help that she detected nervousness in Bev's voice. There was more she wasn't telling her, and she couldn't help feel a little bit concerned about her well being.

"Listen" she finally sighed after making her decision, not too happy about it, but knowing she wouldn't be happy no matter which option she chooses "I'm on my way home right now. Can you meet me at Nowhere? It's that little coffee shop just across the street from my apartment"

"Good, good." Elliot says, barely resisting the urge to rub his hands together in glee. "Let me know what you find out. Sooner is better than late, ya?"

The invitation came before the incident with Lizabeth, so the soirée probably has nothing to do with that. Nonetheless, Elliot seems eager to learn what he can before then. He also seems to be assuming you will share what you learn with him, even though you only said you would ask, not tell. Keeping Elliot in the dark is a delicate balancing act.

You also have to deal with this new Emma kine. She will need the details about the ball, which you don't currently know.

"Nowhere? Yes. In 20 minutes? I'm famished!" Bev says, saving the details for in person.

When you arrive Bev looks like she has been crying, but tried to cover it up with makeup that is not the right colour for her complexion.

Emma picked the Nowhere for two reasons; one, it was right next to her apartment, so she could make it back home within less than a minute once their meeting was concluded. And two - the small coffee shop closed pretty early in the evening. They couldn't sit there for too long, and Emma would have the perfect excuse to part ways with Bev after getting all the interesting info. She was still hoping to catch dinner with David, even texting him to 'wait up' for her.

But seeing Bev's distraught face made her regret not picking another venue. She gave the young woman a warm hug and pointed her to the table she was saving for them and joined her a short minute later, after placing their orders at the counter, making sure to pick something with extra cream and sugar for her friend.

"Bev. What happened? Are you alright?" Emma empathically clasped the woman's palm, squeezing her hand gently for reassurance. Something was clearly wrong, and it was better to confront the problem head on, rather than pretend like she was too dense to notice her friend needed her help.

"Oh, it's nothing. Not important, and I don't want to talk about it..." Bev says. trying to pretend, but then proceeds to immediately talk about it with no extra prompting needed.

"My girlfriend left me... again. Screwed me and then was gone in the morning, with just a note saying she 'had to leave town'." You did not know Bev was seeing anyone, unless this is the same 'demon hunter' she mentioned in the past? The one from whom she gleaned most of her information?

Bev starts to cry again, her makeup smearing. Bev is black, currently sporting a large afro hairdo which look dishevelled, as though she slept without the proper care and then did not take the time (or have the tools) to fix it this morning... but it is afternoon and it still looks flat.
