"I didn't get much of a look at it." Lizabeth answers. "But I should have pictures on my phone." She starts to look through her gallery, conveniently relieving you from needing to bring it up.

"Hey! Someone's been fiddling with my phone!" She says. "The pictures are gone." She says, holding out her phone and showing you the most recent picture, which is near the one in which you spotted the edge of the box. Apparently whoever removed the pictures did not notice that detail.

"No." Lizabeth says. "The rain had most people indoors or in their cars or boats. There was no one else on the river bank..." She trails off thoughtfully. "But, maybe...? I don't know. There was mud and water, and no one could have snuck up on me... but then who tasered me?"

By her story she was 'tasered' at the exact moment touched the item. She does not believe it was the item itself, but it sounds a lot like that to you.

What do you do?

"Don't worry; I'll show them a great time" She proceeded as if the matter was settled. An art show did sound like the better option, come to think of it. Much more exciting then walking around in a stuffy museum. She'll check the listings later, search for some fringe show David's parents would never consider going to on there own "And we'll go grab some lunch together too"

Her guilty conscious assuaged, Emma sprang upwards on the tips of her toes and planted another kiss on her husband's lips. The problem was behind her, and now she was looking forward to spending the rest of the night together with her husband "I'm going to grab a quick shower, ok? And then we can have dinner, and I'll make you forget all about the floodings and the boring scutwork"

"Now we're talking." David says enthusiastically, then turns to jokingly overplay hurriedly finishing the food without delay.

"So it sounds like these people in suits might have it then? The military?" Benji concludes. "Better them than Elliot, I suppose. Just barely."

Speaking of Elliot… "Oh! That reminds me…" He jumps up and disappears into the kitchen to rummage through his recycling bin, digging through months worth of junk mail, unopened bills, noise complaints from his neighbours (what is a vampire supposed to do all night if not practice his scales?), and old receipts in search of the invitation he threw away.

Lizabeth shudders and hugs her legs close to her body at the mention of Elliot, she has heard of him and is not eager to meet the head vampire.

"Military, yes, probably." Lizabeth agrees with your logic. "Though I don't know what they were doing on the riverbank or why they would taser me."

The invitation came recently, so it is not hard to find even if it is a little crumpled, now. It is fancy, ornate card with gold-leaf trim and writing, listing the time and place, as well as the exclusivity of he event.

Benji brings the invitation back into the living room with him. "There’s a ball on tomorrow night," he explains. "Something to do with the rain. There’ll be a lot of powerful people there so maybe someone will know something about the box you found."
Sep 10, 2024 12:26 pm
"May I?" Jacob inquires, reaching out to examine the invitation more closely. "It seems someone has overlooked my invitation; I'll need to rectify that," he remarks, a smile playing on his lips.
Sep 11, 2024 1:29 am
"Certainly!" Benji gladly hands the invitation over to Jacob. "It’ll be much more fun if you’re there."

Despite your good appearance, the people at Pinko look down their noses at you. They don't say anything, but it is clear they somehow just know you can't afford any of the dresses in the shop. You can only imagine what they will think of Benji, with his old and outmoded clothing, and missing hair.

Bev is not there yet, and you have a few minutes to kill before Benji arrives.

What do you do?
OOC:
• How are you dressed for this shopping spree? 'Practical' for chancing a lot, or 'elegant' to try to fit in with the Pinkos?
Describe your reception and reaction. Then we can bring Benji in. Then we can get Bev in when the time seems right.

Emma has been to Pinko before, but without the intention of actually buying anything. Those Nappa leather trousers she picked up from the shelf before putting it right back with a shocked face had a very reasonable price of 599 pounds. The cashmere wool scarf went for 200, and she didn’t bother checking the price tags on any of the designer purses. She could never normally afford to shop there – not even for some of the ‘on sale’ items.

The sales assistant knew that. The tall, bony middle aged woman has seen Emma 'snooping' around the store before, and knew she shouldn’t bother with her. She hadn’t approached her to ask if she needed any help, but just stood there, eyeing the young blonde in the gray raincoat and beanie hat like a hawk, as if she was half-expected Emma to pocket one of the items and run out of the store if her attention was elsewhere.

All of it didn’t make Emma feel very welcome. If she wasn’t so concerned about Bev, she wouldn’t have arrived so early. But she didn’t want the distraught, heartbroken woman to wait on her, rather than the other way around. And she could only imagine how the sales assistant would react once Benji showed up, in his tattered coat. She was almost looking forward to it! A thin smile crossing her lips at the thought, she moved over to the dress rack, stopping by to run her fingers through the soft fabric before pulling the risqué club dress out to look at the cut of the hem.

"How do you do?" Benji greets the sales assistant as he walks into the store, cheerfully unaware of her obvious disdain for him.

He came straight from the station so he has his violin case slung over his shoulder and, though he is cleaner and less bedraggled than he was when Emma met him yesterday, he is still wearing the same patchy tailcoat. The rest of his clothes are just as old and shabby and he couldn’t look more out of place among the racks of expensive designer clothing.

He doesn’t like this shop much, he quickly decides as he looks around for Emma — the windows are too big and the whole place has a floral, chemically smell that irritates his nose.

He brightens as soon as he spots Emma browsing the dresses. "Emma! Hello!"

"Good morning!" her lips curled into a crooked smile at the sight of the unconventional vampire. She has been looking forward to meeting him. There was so much she wanted to know about his kind (she made a whole list before going to bed), and she hoped he would prove to be a more pleasant conversationalist than his master. Or, at the very least, not make her feel like he was about to sink his fangs into her neck at any moment.

"Thanks for coming" the blonde approached the vampire to greet him "I can really use your help today. I have no idea what the dress code is like in these types of events"

If Benji were to have paid attention to this in the past he would know that 'dress code' is a very loose term. Some of the older members of the supernatural world still party like it's 1599, while some adhere to formal-wear at all times, others conform to typical emo and goth aesthetics, and some lean towards the outright outrageous. Emma will find that Benji's peculiar style of dress is not that peculiar after all.

It is possible Pinko's people would be able to advise if you told them what it was for?

A ball gown would not go amiss, and "no one ever went wrong with a little back dress".

"Dress code? It’s been a while since I went to one of these, but it’s mostly just whatever version of fancy takes your fancy," Benji says, shrugging. "It is technically a ball, I believe, so a ball gown would probably be appropriate, but if you’re trying to impress or surprise Elliot, perhaps you could try to dress in a style that evokes the formal wear of his youth. He was born in the 1950s, I think, and turned sometime in the 1980s or 90s."
Sep 17, 2024 7:17 pm
"The 80s?" Emma quirked a brow "So, shoulder pads and lots of hairspray?"
Even if she wanted to impress Elliot, these kinds of outfits went out of style decades ago - and for good reason.

"Are you coming too? What will you be wearing?" she prodded gently, trying to get Benji's measure. Eliot claimed all the 'movers and shakers' of the city would be there. If Benji was invited, it must mean he was someone of importance, no?
Sep 18, 2024 12:59 am
"I am! I, uh…" He frowns down at his current attire. The thought of what he was going to wear had not crossed his mind. "I’ll probably just wear this, I suppose. I have another coat, for special occasions, but I fear the moths may have eaten it."

There was something a bit scary about Benji. He reminded her of the stories Eliot told about the old 'moss-backs'; the ancient vampires dwelling deep in the sewers that no longer had any interest in human affairs, and saw people as nothing but their next meal. They were not alike, of course, but she couldn't help but make the comparison; like the 'Morlocks' (she decided it was a more fitting name for blood-thirsty monsters living underground), Benji gave no thought to how other people perceived him. He didn't see humans as his peers, and maybe not even other vampires. How do you call a man who doesn't care enough to try to fit in? Someone who doesn't value other people's opinion of him?

She tried to hide her discomfort with a smile, as she moved back toward the dress rack "We can get you something too, if you want"

The little black dress she had her eyes on might not be appropriate after all, especially not if she wanted to make an impression. With Pinko not stocking gowns, she wasn't left with much options. Pursing her lips with frustration, she picked the plunging neckline black dress of the hanger anyways, and an ever more scandalous lightweight ribbed knit mini dress, and held both in front of her body to show her companion "What do you think?"

Benji looks at the two dresses and responds, with the utmost sincerity, "…I don’t think either of those would fit me."
Sep 18, 2024 7:53 pm
"Not with that attitude, they won't" Emma couldn't help but giggle, and just like that, she no longer felt anxious in the vampire's company "I should probably put them back then, and look for something more appropriate"

Back to the dress rack it was. There were one or two other interesting options, but she decided she better wait until Bev arrived to get her opinion. In the meantime, she was quite happy to get to get better acquainted with Benji: "How long have you been playing the violin?" she talked without quite looking at him, sifting through the dresses on the hanger "Do you play any other instrument?"
