I should’ve posted this a couple of days ago, but was too much in a rush to do so: I’m traveling with the family from Wednesday to Sunday and will have limited time to check in and barely any time to post. Please npc as required.
OK, no problem.

What a day. First, lose ten years. Then lose 10% of our treasure. Now die by dragon's breath? I should have been a butcher like my mom wanted, Zach thought morosely.
This cracked me up. Zach's depressing outlook on (recent) life gives him great depth as a character : Ella might not see or note anything, but as a player I enjoy this inner monologue.

🙏 Thank you. 😊

A quick note on XP and magic items ...

In OSRIC, if you sell a magic item, you get the full value of its monetary worth in XP. If you keep it, you only get 1/10th of the value.

If you were to sell all the items you’ve recovered so far (and this would require you to return to the nearby town of Gosterwick), I reckon you’d end up with around 2,000 XP each, which would be enough to level up Grim, Thrud and Zach. Worth thinking about.

I’m for us doing that!

Level 2 sounds nice!

Well, from Ella’s perspective it depends on what we’ve found. She wouldn’t mind selling items she cannot use, but any item she can use would only be sold if it’s price was significantly greater than its usefulness… then again her incentives are quite different, her being multi class and all: she’ll only reach level 2 in both classes when most of you are level 3, or even 4.

Awkward indeed! Sorry everyone, been dealing with some family issues the past few weeks and in the meantime I completely forgot about the game! I will do some catching up soon and get Thrudmarr back into the swing of things.

We can play out your time in Gosterwick however you prefer.

It can simply be a mechanical bookkeeping exercise in which you level-up, do a bit of trading, and get straight back to the dungeon.

Or you can do a more in-depth exploration of the town for information gathering or making connections.

Either is fine with me; just let me know your preference.

Depending on how much money we make from our sales, Grim might like to find a smithy or a shop and upgrade his armor. He could go up quite a bit from the studded leather he’s wearing. Again, depending on expense.

Can we assume Ella memorized comprehend languages on the day of the party’s travels and attempted to skim through the book? She’s trying to get an overview of contents, rather than reading through multiple pages. Also, before doing this reading, she would like to flip through the pages to determine (a) whether it has a single typographical style, or is a book written by a single hand /with a single method; (b) whether there are multiple languages / alphabets used in the manuscript?

I'm inclined towards spending some time gathering info while we're in town, but whether that means full-fledged scenes or simple summaries is up to you @Burbage. Happy either way.

Also, reminder that everyone will recover 1hp naturally per day.

Yes, that's OK. OSRIC's rules dictate that those gaining a level will require 1d4 weeks of training, so Ella will have plenty of time to study the book. I'll post her findings in the main game thread.

Actually, it's per full day of uninterrupted rest (so you can't be doing anything else). But, again, you're going to be in Gosterwick for a sufficient length of time that you will have recovered all your hit points before returning to Arden Vul, even if it implies Grim casting a couple of Cure Light Wounds spells.

Here’s the XP situation based on safely returning all your non-magical treasure to Gosterwick …

Ella: 346/346
Grim: 762
Jacky: 390/390
Thrud: 692
Zach: 692

The potential XP value of your magical items are as follow (sell / keep):

- Scroll of Find Traps: 600/60
- Effervescent emerald green potion (x2): 400/40 each
- Cloudy black potion: 500/50
- Scroll of Phantom Armour: 300/30
- Codex: Property of Eustachius the Cantor: 8,000/4,000
- Luminous bone white potion: 900/90

I’ll let you do the maths, but, for example, if you were to sell all of the above, you’d end up with the following XP …

Ella: 1,456/1,456
Grim: 3,204 (enough to take Grim to 3rd level!)
Jacky: 1,500/1,500 (enough to allow Jacky to reach level 2 in his thief class)
Thrud: 2,912
Zach: 2,912

Of course, you need to weigh up the trade-off of keeping the magical items so you can benefit from them.

There isn't anything in our magical hoard which interests Zach, but he won't put up a fight if someone wants to keep one of the items. The codex, though, is either 8K shared amongst us all or 4K to one person, so if someone wants to keep that we should try top arrange an equitable distribution of the rest.
Jul 10, 2025 3:45 pm
No, the XP from the codex is shared evenly, regardless of whether you keep or sell it.

Wow! Thanks DM, and thanks to everyone else, great job thusly!
Burbage, Grim gets +10% for Wis 16. I assume it’s ok I go ahead and tack that onto my total?

Edit - Also, in terms of sell or keep, I vote we sell everything the DM listed. Reads like doing so gets Jacky to level 2 exactly.

Grim's 10% Wisdom bonus is already factored into my figures above (it's why Grim has more XP than Thrud or Zach).

Gotcha, thanks so much.
