Gosterwick
(This post is somewhat out of sequence, but I think you’re going to need this information so you can decide whether to keep or sell the codex, and the corresponding effect on your XP).

Whilst the others spend their days training, Ella studies the mysterious title-less codex that is inscribed simply as "Property of Eustachius the Cantor" on the inside cover.

Through the casting of multiple Comprehend Languages spells, she is able to discern that the codex, which consists of leather-bound parchment, is a miscellany of various sections:

- Descriptive notes of a variety of Thothian liturgies (Litany of Light, Canticle of Revelation, a Psalmody).

- Descriptions and vague summoning notes for beings known as the "Guardians".

- A 10-folio history of the temple of Thoth within Arden Vul.

- A series of capsule hagiographies of early high priests.

- The exact note sequence for a song called the Cantor’s Lament.

- Two unique spells: "The Pummeling Fists of Arak-Zhorr" (Magic User 2) and "Curse Item" (Cleric 5, Magic User 6, Illusionist 6).
Grim’s secondary skill is Scribe. How feasible is it for him to copy some of this information from the codex?

Not feasible. The entire codex is written in a particularly obscure language. Ella is only able to read it using a "Comprehend Languages" spell, and even then she can't write it.

Do y’all think it’s worth keeping the Find Traps scroll, or sell it? Grim can prepare it, now, but keeping it saves a level 2 cleric spell slot for something else, until we have to use it. I think Grim levels to 3 whether we sell it or keep it, can’t speak for anyone else though.

Edit - My druthers are to keep it, but I’ll go with the majority. Am flexible, whatever’s collectively best.

I don't care. It's a one-use item, but probably valuable in a case where we are in a hurry and Jacky can't spend the time to look for traps if a horde of goblins are after us.

@htech, I bumped Zach to 692 now and will assign the rest once we decide what we keep or what we sell.

Speaking of which, if we all share in the compendium, given the explanation, I (the player) would vote to keep it. Zach probably has no clue what half those words meant :)

Without selling the codex, who would level? I count about 2700gp if we don’t sell it; if I understood correctly, we get a further 4000xp if we keep it and use it. That’s about 1340xp per character which isn’t much.

As much as it is obvious this codex contains important information for our future explorations, selling it now seems the only option we have.

According to my sums, you could keep the codex and Grim, Zach and Thrud could still level up (provided you sold enough of the other stuff).

I'm good either way, the ones who lugged the items around can decide who sells 'em :P

I think getting a few of us to at least level 2 is worth selling off some one-time use items (scrolls and potions). It sounds worth Ella figuring out what's written in the Codex before deciding whether or not to sell that.

As for shopping, my armors already pretty good (I think I took it off Dalton?). Would we be able to get weapons enchanted here, or is that something that could only be found in the dungeon? Not that we could afford it right now, but would be good to know.

Grim’s ok with leveling to 2, with others, esp if we have enough gold to upgrade his armor. Is that a possibility?

If you keep the codex, but sell everything else we have:

- Ella: 1,056 / 1,056
- Grim: 2,324
- Jackie: 1,100 / 1,100
- Thrud: 2,112
- Zach: 2,112

The total proceeds from your sales are 3,876 GP.

Does this work for everyone?

Training
Grim's, Zach's and Thrud's training will cost 150 gp each, and take 1d4 weeks. Please can you each roll 1d4 to determine the duration of your training.

Note: by-the-book, training in OSRIC is 1,500 GP per level, but that's too high. So we'll assume the training costs listed are in silver rather than gold.

How do we handle sustenance and lodgings while training is ongoing? I don't think we have the money for a few weeks of idling in town, lol.
Jul 12, 2025 4:34 pm
Rolling.
Edit - Those totals, keeping Codex, are good with me.

Grim’s Training - (1d4)

(3) = 3

Works for me too. Just let Zach know how much XP and coin he has once he pays for these weeks, please.

Finances
Let me clarify your financial situation, as there seems to be some misunderstandings …

If you sell everything from your first expedition and convert it into gold pieces, including the non-magical stuff such as the yellow silk, the ancient silver pennies, the book of erotica and the orange headdress, you will receive a total of 3,876 GP.

(Of course, if you want to keep any of the above rather than selling it, please let me know. Make sure you remove any sold items from your character's inventory and update encumbrance accordingly.)

The training costs for Grim, Thrud and Zach are 150 GP each, so 450 GP total.

Bed and board at the Yellow Cloak Inn (assuming you keep things non-fancy) is 5 sp per person per night, and the same for Billie’s stabling. Therefore, 3 weeks' accommodation for all of you would be 63 GP, 4 weeks’ would be 84 GP.

So, as you can see, you have plenty of money - certainly enough to go shopping for armour if that’s what you want to do.

I’ll leave it up to you as to how you want to manage your finances - whether you’re going to manage it as a central party kitty, or divide it up between you (although I’d suggest the former is much easier). The various factors in Gosterwick provide banking services (for a fee) if you want to store any surplus loot securely.

Can I also suggest that you appoint someone as treasurer/quartermaster to manage your loot (because there’s going to be a lot of it!). testlum/Jacky is already doing the mapping, so perhaps one of the others? I can create a separate loot thread for you if that would be helpful.
Jul 13, 2025 11:36 am
Ah, of course. I was thinking of the money we currently have on hand, not the total after selling off what we looted.

No objections to a shared pool for money earned!
Jul 14, 2025 10:21 am
I’ll offer up Grim to be Quartermaster, if the party wishes to appoint him.

Sure; I'm lazy. However, it may help to have something like this sheet as a reference.

That's cool with me. Are we splitting the gold after expenses or are we considering it all "party gold"? Also, assuming we'll have to carry it and it would thus weigh us down, should we look for a bank or something?

Edit: Only 2 hit points, that's unfortunate.

Rolls

Training Time - (1d4)

(2) = 2

2nd level hit points - (1d10)

(2) = 2

Thank you for that! I requested access for it (read only), but I can just copy it and roll my own, no biggie.

@Burbage I rolled Grim’s level 2 Hp in my post in the Character Creation thread, just to keep things together.

Could we have a sub forum for Loot, so I can have a central place to keep all our money and stuff together? I’m wanting to ask everyone to think about what stuff (mainly mundane and purchasable items) you want to acquire for your PC’s. We can record all that in one place, look at the group cash, and as we go along, see what we need to do to get our PC’s to where they need to be gear-wise. Open to other thoughts and suggestions of course.
