The Castle - B2

You all slip free of your manacles and are standing waist-high in the water, or neck-high for the goblin. The water is chilly and smells stagnant. Anyone walking the perimeter sees one doorway connected to a short T-intersection. A half dozen cages dangle from the ceiling on thick chains. Only one is occupied by the sleeping figure who continues to snore.
Sep 23, 2024 3:02 am
"A detestable tongue for such a dark place…" Gregory says, clicking his tongue as he holds the candle up in the direction of the dark speech.

"Best we wake the heavy sleeper, in case he wishes to make good his escape along with us!" he says, motioning towards the figure with the candle. He waits for one of the burly men to handle the whole affair!

Clarence waves Gregory over, Shine that here, please. Clarence walks up to the sleeping figure, takes his broken manacle and chain, and rattles it near the figures ear. Wakey wakey, you've slept through breakfast!.

The sound finally wakes the figure in the cage with a spluttering snort. They press their face to the bars of the cage and you see a scraggly old man, thin and dirty, with lank greasy hair that is grey where it hasn't fallen out. His bleary eyes focus on you and then brighten. He beams a smile of crooked yellow teeth.

"Oh! New cell mates! Welcome to m’lord’s Castle. You must be the latest pawns in
m’lord’s game—a game of hunter & hunted.

At midnight, when the moon is at its highest peak, he’ll begin the hunt. Feel free to look around until then. But you must be wary traversing the Castle. Mustn’t let the Stress get to you. Mustn’t let your hope or the lights go out. Here – take my candle, and this… I believe it belonged to one of you. Smells like home, doesn’t it? Find more Trinkets from your past—it’ll give you the courage to push through."

The man hands a tallow candle half the length of a forearm and a small cardboard box containing six matches. He also hands a small bottle of perfume. Varos, you recognize the perfume as belonging to your mother. What does the bottle look like? What does the perfume smell like?

Clarence looks at the tallow candle and matches, then peppers the old man with questions. Do you want to be freed? How do you know all this? Where is the exit? Who are you? Can we find other light sources?
Sep 23, 2024 8:52 am
The last man to wake waded through the waist-high water with effort and distaste. He joined the others around the cage, an listened to the dark tellings of the captive within, without comment.

He might have spoken after the candle and bottle of perfume were handed out, but the muscular man was quicker, and the young priest — for his appearance and clothing clearly designated him as a man of the cloth — remained silent.

"If the law-giver wills it, I can make more light. I am Anton, servant of Madeera the Covenant."
OOC:
If there is a stick or bar that could be used as a light-bearing rod in the area, Anton would like to get a hold on such an object.

While the group is talking with the older servant, Frac walks the perimeter and sees the doorway connected to a short T-intersection. He looks both sides. Are they all flooded?
Sep 23, 2024 10:03 am
"Where did you get this? This is my mother's perfume bottle. My father gave her this on their wedding night." It is blown glass in the shape of a heart with red accents in the actual glass. Her favorite perfume smelled of a mixture between rose and clover.
Sep 23, 2024 12:10 pm
Frac peers down both branches of the intersection and sees they are both flooded as they are at the same level as this room. Frac has no light to see much else. He hears the faint echoes of screams and the cracks of bullwhips coming from the left tunnel.
OOC:
Remember you only have one candle which is still in the center of the room so your vision is very limited.

You can make a DC 10 Strength check to pull loose one of the cell bars.

The caged man laughs a wheezy laugh.

"Oh, so many questions! Yes, I see you are not ordinary prey, no, no! I see a spark in your souls. I see in your fortune several means of escape from this Castle & the Count. But...your fortune is yet clouded... Perhaps I could read it for you? Then...maybe...I can answer your questions."

Without waiting for an answer he disappears for a moment back into his hanging cage and then comes back. He pokes his arms out of the cage and in one hand is holding a deck of water-stained and mismatched Tarot cards. "Hm, let us see..."

He pulls the first card.
[ +- ] The Beast
"The Beast. The most obvious route – the door in which you came in – but will you honor the doorman's request? His price may be too great on your conscience."

He places the card on the bottom of the deck and pulls another.
[ +- ] The Ghost
"The Ghost. A shell of the man whose love led towards his demise. Can you restore what he once lost?"

Insert. Draw.
[ +- ] The Priest
"The Priest. His life is in jeopardy as we speak. His prayers could restore an escape once forgotten."

Slide. Flip.
[ +- ] The Raven
"I see the Raven whose wingspan eclipses the moon. She offers a lofty escape in exchange for gold and silver."

He replaces the card and draws a final one.
[ +- ] The Enchanter
"The Enchanter who’s written a recipe for retreat. Find the ingredients, and you might find home."

He keeps this last card held out, close to the fire for all to see, but you feel drawn to his old and haggard face. His rheumy eyes seem to look into your souls.

"There is but one more path to freedom, one that has led to the deaths of many before you, but should you prevail, the power might cease forever! I see before me three Artifacts which may aid you.

I see a Tome infused with the Count's power, resting on a throne fit for a king.

I see an ancient Symbol of hope. Find the Mother—the last bastion of light.

I see a Sword, a great weapon of vengeance. Go to a place of great heights—where the stone itself beats with life.

These are your fortunes. Use them well, or perish like the rest of us. Midnight is coming. He will come for you… Prepare!"

With this final word, the outstretched Tarot card bursts into brilliant white blinding flames. You shield your dark-sensitive against the powerful light. When the light has died out your vision slowly returns. Looking up at the hanging cage you see naught but a moldy skeleton holding a black and smoldering Tarot card outstretched through the bars.

Clarence looks at the tarot card held in the skeletal hands. Which one is it, or is it one the shade had not shown the group.
OOC:
If it seems "safe", Clarence will reach in and take the "proffered" card.
Sep 23, 2024 12:47 pm
"A servant of Madeera, you say? I had thought myself alone in that! Perhaps this Count detests the Covenant and seeks to send her faithful from this world…" Gregory theorizes, with an unhappy groan.

He listens then as the man reads their fortunes. He commits the things to memory so that they may be recalled later, when capacity to think thoroughly had returned. Now, they merely wanted out of this damned room.

"How steep a price might the door man seek?" he ponders, wondering the first riddle-prophecy.
Sep 23, 2024 1:15 pm
Clarence reaches for the card and as soon as his hand touches it, the card disintegrates into ash that slowly drifts into the water.
OOC:
I hope someone grabbed the candle and matches... lol

Damn and blast! Clarence turns to the others inb the group, taking in the view. Well, what say you? Easy but painful? Lost and found hunt? Find the prayer dude? Bribe the big bird? Or go on a scavenger hunt for the ages whose almost certain result is our deaths or worse. Remember, this creepy dude here Clarence points to the skeleton says the last route has been failed by all who have tried it before. I vote for getting the HELL out of this place—or getting out of the HELL which this place is—as fast as possible.

I'm not sure of your question? Which card? It was the last one he pulled, The Enchanter. For candle and matches, I don't know if anyone took them from the man so someone needs to claim them.

OOC:
The description is that once the illusion/phantasm disappeared, all we saw was the skeleton and Tarot card. Which implies the candles and matches were part of the illusion as well. I guess I misunderstood. Assume that if the candles and matches were real, Clarence would have grabbed them before looking at the smoldering card, please.

Tibor will attemp to pull loose a cell bar to use as a weapon.

"As much as I want to get out of here," he pauses to grunt in effort as he pulls at the bar. "It would be a shame to learn. Nothing of this count or his curse and I fear the curse will not be so easy to escape."
OOC:
If Anton wants, Tibor will try to rip one out for him as well.

Seeing how easily Tibor broke a shaft of iron for use as a weapon, Anton did not hesitate to rely on the burly man’s talents.

"Would you mind?" he asked timidly, pointing at a nearby rusted iron rod, jutting nearby.
OOC:
If no one else took the candle and matches, Anton would have done so.

Tibor grunts and hands the iron bar he just ripped out to Anton. He turns and grabs another bar with both hands. He growls and attempts to pull another bar free.
OOC:
