The Castle - B2

Anton looked at the unfolding scene with no little discomfort. The figure’s unnatural exit made the hairs on the back of his neck stand. As the torture chamber was plunged into greater darkness, the young priest moved forward into the chamber seeking any immediately recoverable tools from among the objects half submerged in this place of suffering.
OOC:
a few questions:
- We still have our candlelight?
- Is there an obvious means of climbing onto the balcony (and exiting the submerged portion of the room)?
- when you describe the figure’s movement as gliding, is it literal or figurative?

You know, if we take that big candle, we should be good for light until we get out of this godsforesaken place, Clarence muses. Little Wizard, do you think we can carry it? Clarence asks as he slightly twists his upper body and strikes yet another imposing pose, at least in his mind.
OOC:
Am I correct that only Varos and Anton have supplied their names in character?
@matmaisan, Gregory has the lit candle and I have the roughly siox-inch tallow candle and the six matches.

Varos will follow in behind and shut the door. No need for gargoyles sneaking up behind them.
OOC:
Exactly what were left as far as clothes we are wearing?

"No idea..." says Frac, thinking about it 🤔 "My name is Frac, by the way. Pleased to meet you."
OOC:
Can we?

I’m Clarence, Frac, but you could call me "the body" if you want.
OOC:
If Clarence looks into the room from where he stands, can he see the huge candle, the ominous fighter, or anything else, GM?

"Gregory…" Gregory mutters as introduction, trusting the lot enough with that much of his name for now!

"Some Body will have to fetch the Count’s candle from above! Surely that was him, observing our efforts to escape!" the wizard assumes, before going on!

"Perhaps if two of you stand atop each other, you could reach the balcony and the light source?"

"If Clarence would give me a boost I am sure I could get up there pretty easily."
Sep 25, 2024 1:26 am
I’d be happy to! said Clarence, flexing his pecs.

Great questions! And some misunderstandings lol. The candlestick is as tall as a man, not the candle, which is normal (i.e. 1 hour) sized. I'll post a photo below of what it looks like. Yes you still have your candle with 15 minutes left, plus one unlit candle from the man/skeleton in the hanging cage. Shadowdark is always supposed to be played in turns and it will take about 10 minutes to explore a room plus travel time between rooms. So tell me what you'd like to do that's reasonable within 10 minutes. I've held off on adding more details until anyone enters the room and pokes around. But yes, there were a few corpses chained to the wall below the balcony that can be used for some gruesome climbing. Anton has said he's examining the torture devices, what's everyone else doing? As for the figure, Anton didn't see it so its however Frac wants to describe it. Whichever description sounds scarier and more mysterious is good haha. For your clothes, you have everything you were wearing minus usable equipment except holy items. You were simply disarmed, not robbed or stolen from. https://i.imgur.com/dAG55AU.jpeg

Sure, go for it!

Tibor stands by the door into the room making sure nothing tries to get in. Watching Clarence flex, he tries to discreetly strike a few similar pose and then frowns and pokes wistfully at his own muscles.

Clarence stretches out his arms and back and gives Varos the requested boost.

Clarence peers at the tall sconce, wondering how heavy it is. He doesn’t focus much on the bodies but is looking for something that would be a better weapon than the rusty length of chain and manacle he is still carrying.
OOC:
Clarence wants to know if the tall candle holder is similar in weight to a pole arm and can be used as such or is it too heavy to be wielded properly, even for "the body"

If we are going to be here for 10 minutes, then I suppose Gregory might look over the devices or the bodies.

Best for him to know how he will end up, if he doesn’t escape tonight!

OOC:
Yeah, that's a creative idea. It functions as an improvised staff. It'll be 1d4 damage but suffers a -1 penalty to attack since it isn't balanced.

Clarence drops the rusty manacle and chain and picks up the candelabra. Rotating it a few times around its middle and taking some practice thrusts, he exclaims Balanced like a drunk pig on a Sunday night, but a sight better than hitting with my fists. Vasco, see anything up there?

On the balcony, Varos finds a flight of stone stairs leading up into darkness behind the red curtain.

Several party members wade through the flooded torture room. You find a skeleton on stretched on the rack with a dagger buried in one eye socket. A light hammer lays inside the smashed remains of a skull on a table. A brown leather pouch is stuffed inside the mouth of a corpse chained to a wall. Many of the torture devices use ropes, chains, and hooks. An area of concentrated bubbling about two feet wide lies in one corner of the room.
Sep 25, 2024 5:32 am
WEAPONS! Clarence cries out. Someone grab that dagger; someone else grab the hammer. Until everyone is armed, I'll stick with the floor-sconce-staff. I mean, no one else here has the musculature to use it, I reckon. Once again, Clarence takes a pose with the metal bar as if he was power-lifting.

Do we have a lightfingers among us? That pouch looks tempting. Gregory, when you rcandle gets low, come over so I can light the next one.
OOC:
When Clarence took the candelabra, he pocketed the candle that was in it. So I believe he has two six-inch candles now? I'm saying six inches since you said "half the length of a forearm". How long will each burn? A full hour or less?
Sep 25, 2024 5:49 am
OOC:
Yes, all candles burn for 1 hour. And also I just realized torches are Near range (30 feet) while candles are only Close (5 feet). This means you can only see the person in front and behind you. Better light some more candles!
Sep 25, 2024 9:55 am
The pouch did look tempting, but the wizard doubted that they would be simply able to buy their way out the front door with the meager collection of coins inside.

Still, he slinks over to the thing, and inspects its heft!

"No sense in leaving it behind us! It could afford us a form of rapid transportation once we make our escape!"
Sep 25, 2024 10:04 am
Varos calls down from the balcony "There are a set of steps heading up. Not much else. I will take that dagger if no one else wants it."
