As a merchant and apprentice gem cutter, I have rudimentary knowledge of geology and mining Wemmick. Sylvandur are all the creatures you described violent, can we talk to them or is a fight guaranteed? I don't like the idea of something like any of those hunting us down or sneaking up on us. Let's go up and see if the creature is still around or if they have moved off to scavenge somewhere else...

Van ponders Elyse questions. Since he had little first hand experience with such creatives, he recalls older druids teachings as well as conversations he's had with smaller beasts (beast-talk) about them to look for answers.

Most giants, and giant kin, are agressive but can be negotiated with. Though this oftn requires either them feeling they have to negotiate to get what they want or recognizing a powerful opponent. Many of them are known to put size and raw power above intellect and social skill. Trolls and agres are more violent while Ettin are the intelllectual and conversationalist of the lot while cyclops tend to be more of teritorial isolationist.

"Sorry Elyse, this a violent lot. We may be able to negotiate AFTER we show them we are strong. I wouldn't
abandon our search, but let's be careful ahead not to be surprised."

"Aye. Strength is the only thing they respect."

Most giant-kin move or live in small groups of less than 10 but anything over 2 of them would be risky to handle. However if you encounter 1 or 2 before the rest and can prove your worth to them you may be able to talk with them. So far you only know that 1 such crearture visited the ravine within the last several days.

Van tells Fur that run back to him to report back if she sees giants, then let her wonder ahead.

As you are discussing and investigating issues you hear a scrape of stone on stone from overhead. It sounds to be desending towards you.
Oct 19, 2024 4:45 pm
Van shouts "jump away!!" As he jumps to the side, trying to get out of harms' path.
Then looks up to see where I'd it fall from, or if some giant threw it.

well I guess we are about to experience how violent they are first hand... Elyse draws her short sword and starts thinking about what spell might distract a giant kind...

Wemmick, will as well step out of the way and prepare for anything that may come down from the closest staircase or ramp near us.

You realize the first sounds you heard were likely the careless footfalls of whatever is descending the stairs along the ravine cliff wall. With nothing in sight and the stairs designed to blend in it is hard to pinpoint where they might be expected to appear first. The sounds from above soften, though you still catch the occasional scrape of stone on stone, letting you know they are still in the ravine but moving with more care.

Here are some basic game guidelines.
OOC:

Do you want to
1. wait and try to see/hear what is coming down the stairs
2. head up the stairs to meet them
3. hide from view of the stairs
4. other

Remember, your character is free to go anywhere and try anything. (You can always choose "Other" and let me know your actions.)

Roll a Test anytime you think there is a chance or failure so I don't have to ask for a roll or roll for you This keeps the game moving.

I will usually let narrative dictate who goes first in combat unless there is a random/surprise factor. But thanks for rolling Just In Case :)

"Since we need to earn their respect, I would think against a sneaky approach. Let's just go ahead, greet them and start talking. What do you say?"
Oct 21, 2024 12:33 pm
Good Idea Sylvandur, let's meet them in the stairs, that may play to our advantage...

@Cathamber,@Twirch
OOC:
maybe you both can take the front. I'm thinking the bard might be able to charm and the druid could use their animal affinity if it is more beastial than humanoid.

OOC:
As we climb the stairs, I start preparing an illusion that would change the look of a few steps do that they appear shallower than they actually are. I am hoping this causes the creature to trip if it advances aggressively.

OOC:
Creative use, and totally doable, but most magic is only a basic test of 2d6. I believe the system designers did this to compensate for the power/versatility. Focus can help make it a better test next time so it would be 2d6 and success on any roll with a 4 or higher, so about 75%
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/wowpedia/images/0/08/Hungry_Ettin.jpg As you advance up the stairs Elyse attempts to shape a spell in her mind but can not seem to adjust the magical energies properly in time. The uneven cliff face turns a bit and you find you are facing an 9' tall 2 headed figure, an etin.

The large muscular humanoid is about 40 feet up the stairs (1+ zone/movement away) and barely has room on them as it catches sight of you and raises its club overhead and emits a roar that echoes up and down the ravine.

The stairs vary from 3-4 feet in width and steep or shallow depending on the section. You may be able to slip past each other if careful but single file like is the safest when fighting. I assume Blornvid or Wemmik would be first (as before) so whichever of them post first will be assumed to be in the front unless they state otherwise, with the other 2 behind

are there rules about size for a pc like Elyse? I'm thinking about D&D5e where a gnome can share a space with other PCs
