CAPTAIN'S LOG
STARDATE 45667.1
While entering orbit around the water planet Tyroth in the system Gnycish 2, our sensors detected a heavily armed warship approaching at sublight. On a closed channel, they've requested we halt and await their arrival before sending any shuttles or using transporters to reach the surface. I've alerted the crew to stations and await this unexpected encounter. Shore leave and the nanotechnology ethics summit may need to wait.

The crew are at their stations throughout the USS Christa McAuliffe. Whether this will be a routine greeting or the first step in an act of war, no one knows.

Where abouts are you on the ship? The bridge, sick bay, engineering, other?
Oct 16, 2024 7:37 pm
Drake arches an eyebrow as he sits at the tactical station on the bridge.

"Captain, I recommend raising shields and the ship go on yellow alert immediately."
Oct 16, 2024 11:58 pm
The Doctor stands at a station in sickbay, a steaming mug in her hands. Her ears flatten as the call goes out. No rest in Starfleet, she thinks, and begins preparing for any potential problems, while also opening a channel to the bridge if she's needed further
Oct 17, 2024 11:27 am
Sitting in the XO seat on the bridge, Cole's brow furrowed, thoughtfully scratching at the stubble on his cheek and chin as he considered the approaching ship's request and Ensign Zarah's recommendations. With a confirming look towards the Captain he addressed the tactical officer, "Negative Ensign. Raising shields might be seen as an aggressive act. Be ready --- but let's see what they're about."
Oct 17, 2024 4:18 pm
"Shields on standby - ready and waiting for your order."

No rest for the weary, Drake thinks as he remains poised for the command.
Oct 17, 2024 5:07 pm
Aurin stooped over his PADD in his quarters, brow furrowed in concentration. He had taken his notes and readings from the incident at the asteroid belt, compiled them, and then set them aside, to percolate. There would be time to polish his findings, but he needed a moment's distance to put together any kind of coherent presentation.

At the moment, he was going over a few of the recommended readings for the upcoming summit. He absorbed the cutting edge of current nanotechnology research, allowing himself a moment of satifaction when his work on theoretically inert containment fields was cited, at least in passing.

The alert cut through his reading. Hopeful that it was a routine encounter, he tucked the PADD under his arm and made for the bridge. He trusted the science team to handle routine encounters, but, he supposed, he was technically a bridge officer.

He entered the bridge, striding behind the bridge arch, trying not to interrupt the proceedings as the captain considered his course of action.

As the ensign at the sciences station stood to be relieved, Aurin lifted his hand and gave a small wave of his hand, indicating they should remain. Aurin stood near the ensign, facing the main viewscreen as he folded his hands behind his back, not wanting to put pressure on them by peering directly over their shoulder. "Passive and routine scans only, Ensign, until directed, unless you spot something anomalous. Let's not spook them," he suggested quietly, below the channels of command.
Oct 17, 2024 7:02 pm
Lunas is on the bridge, taking her shift as second pilot on the helm. She has had some rest since their adventure to another dimension and this is her first shift back on USS Christa McAuliffe. This was supposed to be a routine cruise to the summit but now it took a turn in a much more exciting direction.
She confirmes to the first pilot that the ship had come to a halt and relays the distance and bearing of the hostile ship to the commanding officers.
Oct 19, 2024 9:45 pm
The captain says to the com officer, "Open a hailing channel, main view screen."

Plynlik Captain

The screen flickers on and you see an alien face in a small cubicle. "Federation vessel, those is the Plynlik starship Gragolok. We're blockading the planet while we investigate the death of a diplomat. You may send a team of less than ten aboard our ship if you wish to make your case for access, but any unauthorized attempt to access the planet will be considered hostile."

The Captain responds, "This is Captain Syrran of the Federation starship Chista McAuliffe. Some of my officers were planning on attending a conference on Tyroth but we'll lend what assistance we can in investigating this crime. Expect our delegation in fifteen minutes. Christa McAuliffe out." The screen blackens.

He turns to Commander Walker. "Assemble an away team. I suggest Devar may be an asset for learning the truth behind their actions, but the choice of complement is up to you."
Oct 21, 2024 7:19 pm
Ever ready for adventure, Drake is hopeful that he will be a part of the team.

"I'd like to volunteer, Commander."

"I'll like to volunteer as well, sir" Luna quickly jumps in. There no fun being a pilot on a halted ship. Visiting an alien space craft and possibly investigate and solve a murder case sounds much, much more fun.
Oct 21, 2024 10:24 pm
M'Ress puts down her mug, sighs and taps her comm. I will join you, you may need my expertise, perhaps I can figure out what caused the death
Oct 23, 2024 11:52 am
A slight narrowing of the eyes, a small tightening of the lips, the only betrayal of emotion as Cole considered the alien's news and warning, his hopes of a less stressful mission after their harrowing encounter in another reality seemingly dashed. Mentally he begun to assemble an away team even as the Captain responded to the alien delegate and nodded as Syrran's cool, logical eyes met his and issued his orders. A small smirk as volunteers already began to speak up.

"I'll clear it with our Security Chief but I think it wise that they remain aboard in case things go South. I'll take Ensign Zarah for the Away Team," he stated with a nod towards Drake before shifting his attention to helm control.

"Sir. If I could procure a shuttle and Lieutenant Vilchis. I'd prefer shuttling over to the alien craft rather than beaming aboard in the event our hosts see fit to not let us leave we'll at least have a way to 'force' our way out --- should it come to that.

"Doctor M'Ress and Lieutenant Ah to examine the body and evidence

"And Lieutenant Devar to assist me in diplomacy."

OOC:
Cole will roll with his standard issue equipment.

I assume there would be no Opportunity Cost for the shuttlecraft?

@group - everyone else (mainly Aurin and Dr. M'Ress) can state what other equipment they want to bring.
Oct 23, 2024 7:22 pm
"Excellent. Ready to assist where needed." Drake looks questioningly at Dr. M'Ress and wonders why she was less than enthusiastic. Nervous perhaps.

"I'll keep us safe Doc."

I'll have it ready at once Luna replies excited to be good. Good call yo take the shuttle.
Permission to be relieved of bridge duty as a matter of formality and gets up before any answer is given. She heads for the shuttle bay to prepare the craft. On the way, she checks that her phaser is charged.

She smiles and gently pats his arm as she enters the room Im fine, just disappointed I didn't get my tea. Or my nap
Oct 23, 2024 9:34 pm
"Ah, well I hear that. Good I'm glad all is well with you and you can always make up for missed naps. Missed tea on the other hand, well that is pretty serious..." he says jokingly.

"Aye, sir."

Aurin expected to pack little more than his tricorder and the tiny type 1 phaser he kept in his coat pocket, and the PADD he had clutched under his arm. He trusted that, acting in good faith, the interdictors would allow equipment to be beamed down to the planet to help investigate the mystery.

But a small frown pulled at his cheeks behind his beak. If someone wanted to make some kind of political statement at an event like this...

He turned towards the ensign at the console. "See if you can get atmospheric readings from inside the ship. Keep an eye out for metallic particulates, especially. But don't get... too aggressive. Inform the captain if you find anything unusual."

"I will join you in the bay shortly, gentlemen." He took a separate turbolift from the bridge to his lab on his way to the shuttle, picking up a small hazardous materials kit, no larger than a briefcase, with a sample container and hand tractor. He had been prepared for a summit on nanotechnology, after all...

"Alright. Atmospheric readings it is, in stealth mode where possible."

Drake runs a few standard routines from inside the ship that shouldn't lift eyebrows too much.
Oct 26, 2024 2:25 am
Drake's scans meet with no luck, at least on settings that they may not detect. More powerful probings would certainly be apparent and likely deemed a hostile act. With your sensors unable to penetrate their shielding, you have no choice but to load up in the Raven and make for the potentially hostile ship.

The captain says, "Good luck, officers. This is potentially a first contact scenario so learn what you can."

Luna leads the way from the bridge to the aft shuttlebay where the runabout awaits, and the crew from other parts of the ship meet you there.

Oct 26, 2024 7:07 pm
Luna at the control pushes a few buttons once everyone is onboard. "All clear. Permission to debark?" she asks into the comm link.
First contact the Captain's word replays in her mind. This is something else.

"Alright here we go" she says out loud as the permission to depart is given. "Heading 052 mark 80"
Oct 28, 2024 2:59 am
The Raven leaves the shuttle bay and heads toward the alien ship. It isn't large, about a third the size of the Christa McAuliffe, but that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous. When you close the distance, you get your first good look at it.

https://i.imgur.com/erwp8cB.jpeg

The navigator about the alien craft seems Luna telemetry and heading instructions, bringing the ship aboard is own vehicle bay. An easy flight if a tense one.

Inside the bay, a trio of the unknown aliens waits for you. Two are armed, likely security officers, while the third is not.

Any preparations or instructions before you exit the Raven and join the alien entourage?
Oct 28, 2024 8:54 pm
Luna was a bit taken aback and awed by the alien technology of the alien craft. But she hid it well under jer usual cool composure.

"I guess that is the welcome committee. Let's hope they aren't overly hostile or this will be a short visit."
Oct 29, 2024 2:39 am
Drake's wide eyes didn't hide his surprise as the intense colors of the alien vessel reflected across them.

"Yes, let's hope. I'd rather learn than fight."
Oct 29, 2024 2:31 pm
With his curiosity getting the better of him, Cole opted to stand rather than taking a seat with the - now familiar - away team. Casually, so as not to startle his talented pilot, he placed a hand on the back of Luna's chair, leaning forward slightly, eyes wide in anticipation as he peered out the Raven's expansive viewport. Expertly, Luna maneuvered the runabout out of the Christa's main shuttlebay, taking a wide arc around the ship that slowly brought the strange alien vessel. With a small shake of his head accompanied by a smirk, Cole marveled at the sleek and elegant design - that reminded him of the eggs he would collect on the ranch as a youth.

Coordinating with the alien flight controller, Luna eased the shuttlecraft into the vessel's own vehicle bay, where the were to be greeted by two armed individuals and a third that Cole could only assume was their host. The Captain's remarks regarding first contact still prominent in Cole's mind, he could only frown slightly, his lips tightening as he considered what kind of first impression he wanted to make. With a sniff of finality, he turned to Drake and Luna, "Lieutenant Vilchis. Ensign Drake. As they have two armed security guards I think it only fair that we're allowed the same. You two are on security.

"Luna, keep the Raven on standby in case we have to make an ... unauthorized exit.

"Aurin. Doc. Better keep your equipment on board until we can make sure they'll allow us more than our tricorders."

OOC:
Just wanted to clarify. Cole's intention is to have Luna and Drake pulling security and will be the only two carrying phasers. Meaning Luna will reamin with the Away Team. His statement regarding the Raven is intended to mean to keep 'the engine running' so to speak.
In case we have to make a hasty exit - Luna won't have to startup cold.

Oct 29, 2024 4:54 pm
"Yes, Commander. Drake places his hand over his phaser holster ready to react quickly should there be a situation. To the doctor he nods. "I am very curious about that too. Let's hope we have some time to determine those things and maybe even have a conversation."
Oct 29, 2024 8:46 pm
"Sure, XO. I'll be able to get us out in a jiffy if things get hot" She checks her phaser. For a moment she considers whether it should be on stun or not. No need to ask Cole, she knows the answer and keeps it on stun.
"I'm ready" she reports
Oct 30, 2024 12:06 am
Aurin leaned back as he contemplated the ship. From the outside, it was certainly a sight, but his inward concern was their mission. He saved his real fascination for when he could get a good look at how it might work from the inside. But the intermediary stop between here and the site of the death (not yet proven a murder, he reminded himself) did concern him.

"This is quite a vessel to arrive uninvited to this event."

I seem to recall Seck saying Jayce had focuses in Diplomacy and Negotiation (or maybe both?). Not to mention Ship's Counselor, I think provides some bonuses that would most likely be useful as well. As long as you are not opposed @Qralloq I/Cole at least would prefer for him to remain.

OOC:
I'm convinced, Weekend at Bernie's it is!
The bulbous headed aliens escort you from the vehicle bay to a corridor that looks more like a pipe than the rectangular cross-sectioned construction typical of Federation vessels. Their booted feet seem well suited to the non-flat walking surface, and you likely find going single-file to be the most comfortable. You arrive at a small door that irises open and inside a round conference table. The chairs placed around at least seem tolerable for your physiologies.

Captain Okloko
To your left an alien stands up and comes forward. Tentatively, as if unsure of the mechanics, he offers his hand for a handshake. "Greetings, I am Captain Okloko of the starship Gragolok. My people the Plynlik welcome you in peace. Please be seated and I'll explain what I can. I'm here to answer your questions in the name of cooperation."
Nov 1, 2024 9:29 am
OOC:
I say have him stay on the raven but we coild use his diplomacy...
M'Ress smiles and takes out her PADD ready to take notes
Nov 1, 2024 7:24 pm
Silently Cole followed their escort, jaw and mouth taut at finding having to go single file a bit disconcerting despite having positioned Drake at the front of the column and Luna at the rear, and still a bit unsure of the somewhat cool reception they received. Much like the exterior, the interior was just as strange and alien, unlike the architecture of the Federation member species nor adversaries, and were the situation a bit less tense Cole supposed he would have found his self marveling at the differences. Arriving at what was clearly a conference room, a familiar environ, put him more at ease as he confidently strode forward to grip the Captain's hand.

"Commander Cole Walker, XO of the USS Crista McAuliffe," he stated in greeting before gesturing towards the Away Team, "Ensign Zarah. Lieutenants Vilchis and Ah. And our Ship's Counselor Commander Devar and Ship's Doctor, Doctor M'Ress."

Taking a seat he nodded for the team to do the same, pausing for them to add to his hasty introductions, before deferring to the Captain to continue.
Nov 1, 2024 7:49 pm
Luna just nods as she is introduced. Experience has taught her that it is best for her to try to remain silent and not offend anyone. In Star Fleet a small reprimand was usually the only consequence of being a bit out of order. But in this situation consequences could be far worse. So, she did her best not to say anything.
Nov 1, 2024 10:58 pm
Drake is on high alert as he follows the fascinating looking alien down the strange and slightly claustrophobic corridor. Breathing slowly and deeply he calms himself and thinks not of the threat but the marvel of being the first to meet these creatures. That euphoria is short-lived as they enter a more familiar environment. He takes his seat and nods politely as he is introduced. Then subtly but with a purposeful nonchalance, surveys the room, assessing potential threats, possible escape routes if any and other things that jump out at him as incongruous. Of course, incongruous to him might be perfectly normal to these creatures. That's where training and intuition came in. At least that's what he hoped.
Nov 2, 2024 2:39 am
As they emerged into the bay, Aurin did a cursory scan of the environment. He doubted there would be any immediate risk of asphyxiation, but the composition of the atmosphere would provide clues to the biology of these creatures - and detect any trace toxins they may want to minimize their exposure to, or medicate away after their mission.

It was also a subtle test of their hosts' tolerance of his tricorder.

As they filed into the meeting room, he nodded as he was introduced, carefully taking a seat, reaching down and subtly rubbing his ankle after their awkward walk through the tubes. "I am the Chief Science Officer aboard the Christa MacAuliff. It si my honor to be welcomed aboard," he offered, by way of elaboration.
Nov 2, 2024 5:27 pm
The alien captain waits for the two guards to step in and sits down cross legged on the bench beside Cole. "Thank you for coming. I understand that you've come to this system to attend the so-called ethics conference on nanotechnologies. The facility that hosts the event was originally built by the Order of the Cosmic Compass. It's a somewhat grandiose name, granted, and their order originally focused on 'Biological and Biotechnological Sciences'. It was disbanded centuries ago for crimes against sentient life that occurred in the very same structure. The facility is well designed, a marvel of unique construction, so it is understandable that it support new ventures. Yet, we remain vigilant."

He brings gestures and a view screen pops on table showing an image before each of you.
[ +- ] Image
"It's tethered to the sea bed with cables, has more than a thousand staff, with 39 levels, radioisotope thermoelectric generators for power, has been under operation for 12 years since being reactivated, and of course contains sealable bulkheads and positional force fields throughout. Yet, despite the advanced technology, our ambassador, LL Gillokol was murdered inside one days ago." He checks his data feed, and adds, "Thirty-one of your hours has passed, and they offer no explanation or access to their security systems. Somewhere on that subsea platform is a murderer, and we are growing more convinced that the conference managers are covering up."

He gestures to the room. "This brings us to here. My civilization will not allow anyone to leave the institute before the murder of our ambassador has been solved. If you wish to go down, we will not stop you, but we will not allow anyone to leave. Some of the aliens attending the conference are sublime shapeshifters with technology that defeats even genetic scans. You are free to do what you want, but in the interest of risking this situation escalating into a broader conflict, we ask for your understanding."
Nov 2, 2024 7:05 pm
Drake doesn't know whether to be excited or petrified. The facility was indeed a marvel of technology and engineering and being resident within would offer a glimpse of so many wonderous things. But being held against their will was another story.

"You could send an escort to take us back. Surely these shapeshifters aren't that good as to be able to seamlessly become one of us without anyone noticing?" Drake hoped he wasn't out of line, but these aliens were violating their rights and surely, they expected some kind of push back.
Nov 3, 2024 9:22 pm
And just who are you to decide if we can go to that planet and leave it again? Luna DIDN'T say. If that diplomat was as arrogant and obnoxious as this guy everyone could be a murder suspect.

That last thought made her wonder and blurt out loud "How do you know he is in fact murdered?"
Nov 4, 2024 7:15 pm
Cole took the Captain's words in with a mix of wonderment, at the history behind and technology of the research facility, and astonishment at their drastic measures put in place after their ambassador's untimely demise. At mention of shapeshifters his brow furrowed slightly, eyes narrowing, thoughts drifting to his own experiences with the Dominion War and recalling that Starfleet had leaned on some actions many would have considered draconian.

Making a calming gesture with his hand towards his two security officers, he turned to the Captain, "Under the circumstances I think we can agree to your terms.

"Lieutenant Vilchis does raise a valid, if perhaps a bit blunt, question. Were you told that Ambassador LL Gillokol was murdered? Or were you told he had passed and suspect he was murdered? Or have you been told anything at all or simply lost communications with the Ambassaador?"

Holding his hands up in a display of innocence, "And please don't take the questions as an indication that I, we, don't believe you. I am simply trying to remain unbiased while I gather as much fact as I can before we assess the scene and situation below."
Nov 4, 2024 9:30 pm
Aurin nodded, making a gesture of acknowledgement with Luna. "We would be very interested in seeing the evidence you have gathered before we commit to locking ourselves under the ocean."
Nov 6, 2024 2:46 am
He listens to the conjecture, and says, "We have his body. He was stabbed in the back at a place fatal to us. The precision of the blow indicates familiarity with out anatomy, and a trained hand. We have no doubts that he was murdered. While we have recovered his body, we were unable to detect anything of note regarding the murder, save for one thing."

He taps his throat and mumbles. The viewscreens before you turn to a recording of the scans taken. You see data forms before you that are difficult to make sense out of, given the alien way of communicating ideas.

A Reason+Science check TN 3 will allow you to interpret the scans in a more familiar way.

In this case I think it makes sense to spend 1-3 Momentum for 1-2 extra d20s AND I probably have Aurin provide an Assist for an additional die.

Aurin-Ahs concentration pays off as he finds the key to interpreting the alien presentation of data. He's seen many ways to show such information, and while this is new, it slowly makes sense to him.

As he focuses and learns the method employed by the aliens, he comes to understand that he's seeing a medical scan of the murdered captain, along with analysis. The anatomical displays show the point of entry of a small object. The edges are clean without tearing, such as from a sharp cutting instrument. Other than that, the hormonal balances are shown to be within expected tolerances, save for adrenaline and fear which indicate that the captain was aware of the danger, but died before he could fight back. (There are no defensive wounds suggesting he got any hits in.)

The unusual part comes from a materials analysis of the murder weapon. Tiny shards of crystallized metal were examined from microscopic fragments in the wound. It's a composite metal-ceramic implement that is likely extremely high tech, even by the Federation's standards. It would not be inappropriate to say that it's 'cutting edge' materials science.
Nov 10, 2024 9:15 pm
The images on the screen make no sense to Luna, but through Aurin-Ah's explanations, she gets the gist of it.
"So, he was stabbed with a high-end weapon. He knew he was in danger but likely he didn't get a chance to fight back. Is that it, what we know of this murder, I mean?"
She contemplates the facts for a moment. "Where was he stabbed? Was it in the back ... If that is applicable to this life form... Having a back, I mean. Also, why was he murdered? Who stood to gain from it?" she asks
Nov 11, 2024 1:43 am
Once the data has been pointed out more clearly to her, she hums in thought. Is anyone missing any items? This is a tech summit isn't it?
Nov 11, 2024 2:37 am
After parsing the data for his crew, Aurin leaned back, thumb still running along his lower beak. His bright blue eyes closed as he contemplated.

"We may not be looking for a weapon, per se. The use of such material to make a knife would be... an astronomical waste."

He nodded at the Doctor's suggestion. "If the area is closed, as you suggest, is there a manifest?"
Nov 11, 2024 2:57 am
The alien captain says, "You have ideas on how to proceed. Let me propose this subterfuge. We publicly have a firefight in the skies above the planet and your Federation starship drives us off. Then, you attend the summit and discover the murderer. Present to us scientifically credible evidence and we'll ... open formal contact between my people and the Federation."
Nov 12, 2024 3:33 am
Drake was speechless. How did they manage to get mixed up in all of this. And the alien captain's idea was an expensive one.

"Sir." Drake addresses the science officer. "Would you mind expounding on your theory about the weapon?
Nov 12, 2024 3:03 pm
"Well... as the good doctor reminded us, this is a scientific conference. One centered on nanotechnology - and perhaps ironically, its ethical uses and hazards." He turned to face the ensign. "If the material analysis is correct, the weapon could be a component of a scientific instrument or demonstration apparatus. Concealed purposefully, or repurposed for use as a weapon. Such a material's hardness and nonreactivity could have many possible uses beyond... cutlery." He waved his hand, uncomfortable with the thought of swords and combat knives making their way into the conference.

"More worryingly, the murder implement could have been constructed and then disassembled on-site by the technology available. There may be nothing left of it but component atoms in a materials feed hopper for a nano-scale replicator. We must be prepared for material forensic evidence that has been tampered with at perhaps unforseen levels, especially if there is some sort of premeditated conspiracy."
Nov 12, 2024 8:55 pm
Cole took in the discussion in contemplative silence, rubbing the stubble of his beard in thought as he considered his colleagues questions and theories. Most intriguing however was the alien captain's proposal, a proposal with the potential for further diplomacy, though he wasn't exactly thrilled with the idea of exchanging fire with the strange vessel as there seemed to many ways for the situation to get out of hand. Holding up a hand, a gesture intended to cut off any further questions and theories from the Away Team that at the moment seemed to be increasingly enthusiastic towards the mystery of who might have killed the ambassador and with what, "What do you have in mind Captain? As towards an appropriate subterfuge that is."
Nov 13, 2024 11:33 pm
Captain Okloko
He says, "Whoever killed our ambassador may bear my people ill will. If you appear to be opposed to us, you may be sought out as allies in whatever grudge they have with us. A simple ruse. My people have a saying: 'Your friend's enemy is your enemy, too.'"
Nov 14, 2024 2:52 am
There were too many "mays" for this so-called simple ruse and Drake didn't like it one bit. Something felt off but he was in no position to say anything out of line here unless ...

"Commander, may I have a word in private?"

Charged with the security and safety of the crew, Drake would be remiss if he didn't at least express his concerns.
Nov 14, 2024 9:16 pm
Cole considered the Captain's words, lips drawing into a thin line as he contemplated the request and not liking the idea of the two vessels firing on each other, falsely or otherwise not knowing how powerful the strange alien vessels armaments were nor how strong their defenses would be even against Federation phasers, even at low power. He was about to say as much when his security lead begged his attention for a side bar. Meeting the Ensign's eyes he nodded, leaning an ear towards Drake.
Nov 14, 2024 9:20 pm
That was actually a clever gambit, Luna thought. She knew it wasn't up to her to decide to put the Chista into a live fight. Ruse or otherwise. But the plan might work and create an opportunity to resolve this matter.

"We say it the other way around. The enemy of my enemy is my friend..." she trails off as she realizes this might come across wrong as this saying emphasizes enmity rather than friendship. She stopped talking and looked down.
Nov 14, 2024 10:34 pm
Drake had hoped they would leave the table but this would have to do.

"I advise against as it puts us all in jeopardy," he says in a very low voice to Cole. At least he had said his piece and exercised his duty but that would be small consolation if their team got hurt or could never return home again.
Nov 15, 2024 1:05 pm
Cole nodded his agreement to Drake's concerns, face pinching in mild frustration as he saw no other real alternative, the Captain's plan certainly having merit despite the unknown dangers.

"Aurin," he said aloud, turning to his science officer, "Assuming those on the surface are monitoring all communication, any theories on how we can inform the Christa of the ruse without endangering our new friends here?"
Nov 16, 2024 4:11 am
"If they have cracked our strategic encrypted channels, Commander, we have much bigger problems than pantomiming a space war." Aurin remarked dryly. He held his piece on the plan - he found the deception distasteful, but he was also no great politician. These aliens seemed willing to go through quite the ordeal to try and save face.

The doctor listens and shakes her head. While she did serve more directly in war, and even came up with a brilliant strategy for delivering aid to an endangered battalion, this was not her expertise anymore. A false fire fight could indeed end poorly. There should be a way to do this without further violence.

Hearing his own doubts expressed through his teams words settled the decision in Cole's mind as he turned to the captain, meeting the alien's eyes, "The Federation and Starfleet are founded on peaceful ideals - meaning it would be far more believable that we would have negotiated an outcome that would allow us to conduct our own investigation rather than coming to blows. Our stance always is to respond violently only in defense.

Perhaps you would allow us to conduct our investigation jointly? Or without restriction? You may leave and return if you think that is beneficial though I would suggest you remain, however lift the blockade. We of course would assist in questioning anyone attempting to leave the planet"

The alien captain quietly contemplates your proposal. After Jayce adds his own contribution, about how the Federation are known as impartial arbitrators, he agrees.

"I accept your proposal. We'll make it known if we're asked that we delegate the investigation to the Federation as a neutral third party. We'll remain in orbit and continue to blockade the planet. When you're finished your investigation, successful or not, we'll allow you to leave. Does this meet your ethical requirements?"
Nov 20, 2024 12:37 pm
Cole considered the alien's concessions, scratching at his stubble in thought and not entirely enthused that the captain still intended to blockade the planet, even after their findings, but agreed to the terms with firm nod of his head. Despite the awkwardness of their initial greeting Cole extended his hand, "Not all cultures do but my own seals agreements with a handshake."

Taking the alien's hand, he met the captain's bulbous gaze, nodding again as he applied firm pressure and turned to his science officer, "Aurin. Do you have all you need? Or do we need to detour to the ship?

"Otherwise we'll head planetside and begin our investigation."
Nov 21, 2024 10:17 pm
"I think a tricorder should suffice for my purposes. Anything else I should be able to replicate from the Raven."

He turned to Doctor M'Ress. "Do you think you'll have what you need to perform a forensic analysis?" He did not want to demean their hosts, but a second opinion on the victim could not hurt. And her insight would be critical in matching up the means to the act itself.

"I'm ready to bring the Raven planetside. Though, are we sure we have the proper guarantees in regards to leaving again?" Luna asks. With the talk of shape-shifter earlier, Luna couldn't help wondering if the blockading aliens had changed their mind in this matter.
Nov 22, 2024 7:26 pm
With a final, firm shake of their host's hand Cole nodded, "If that is all I guess we will be on our way. As I'm sure your eager to put the matter to rest and find justice for your colleague."

Captain Okloko
He says, "Good endeavors. We'll open and maintain a coded communication channel with your vessel, the Christa McAuliffe. If you've questions for us, you'll relay them through your own ship." The alien seems determined that some sort of subterfuge is the way forward. Whether that's a cultural proclivity or insight into what happens at the Ethics Summit remains to be seen.

Now, as to getting to the conference held in an underwater research facility targeted to the bottom of an ocean, you have two choices. The first, while enroute the Raven has been equipped with minor modifications that will allow it to operate safely underwater. You could actually dive and then dock in the station's submarine bay. Or you could use the transporters.

What's your preference?
Nov 24, 2024 9:39 pm
"With the new modifications, The Raven can go all the way down to the depth of the Summit. The station's submarine bay, I mean. Having our own vessel as means to escape might be prudent, I reckon." Luna suggests
Nov 24, 2024 10:33 pm
"From a security standpoint, it is without doubt the best course to take," Drake agrees, trying to tone down his excitement at the idea of visiting the underwater research center.
Nov 25, 2024 10:07 am
I agree, and it will also allow me to have extra supplies nearby if needed
Nov 25, 2024 12:32 pm
Cole offered the alien captain a nod in the affirmative and stood, pulling his uniform straight and tapping his comm badge to provide a SitRep to the Christa, also informing Captain Syrran they would be taking the Raven to the surface. Thanking their hosts once more, Cole promised to be impartial and any findings in their investigation would be transmitted immediately in the interest of transparency and diplomacy.
Nov 25, 2024 7:23 pm
Yes. This is going to be so much fun. Luna thought. She had only ever done an underwater trip in a simulation. Now it was the real deal.
As soon as it was appropriate, she returned to the Raven to prepare for departure.
Nov 28, 2024 3:57 pm
You return to the Raven through the uncomfortable tube-like corridors, the aliens providing further communication protocols to keep your tacit alliance a secret - they seem determined that subterfuge is the proper course forward.

Once you've made it to the Raven, and seated yourselves aboard, the trip to the planet is uneventful. The last few kilometers may be a different story.

Luna, how about a Piloting roll for this new maneuver. Difficulty 1 just to keep things interesting. If you succeed, please feel free to narrate the journey to the station under the ocean.
Nov 29, 2024 7:27 pm
Leaving the strange alien craft feels like a release to Luna. The descent to the planet is easy and trival. Upon entering the planet's atmosphere a vast ocean reveals itself. It is an impressive sight. There is no end to it, at least not one Luna can see.

She pushes a few buttons on the consol to activate the underwater system.

Luna is a quick study, and takes the entry easily. The water parts before the modified frequency shield, adapted to sluice through the water rather than evaporate it in a spray of plasma. The powerful engines of the runabout are enough to drive the vehicle at cataclysmic speeds through the salty ocean, and Luna find a threshold that doesn't unleash titanic forces in the ecosystem but still allows them to make solid headway.

The ocean is living, with strange animals swimming past and darting out of the path of the speeding spaceship. You see little signs of bony specimens and most seem to be fluidly shaped invertebrates.

The Raven is hailed on the frequencies provided by the Summit's organizers in their invitation. "Greetings delegation from the United Federation of Planets. We have been quarters set aside for you, and a liaison will join you at the submarine bay. Please follow the guidance prompts in the side frequency and welcome to Tyroth."

The station when you find it looks much like a space station only it is magnetically and physically tethered to the seabed. Luna pilots the Raven between hanging equipment into a bay. The force field allow the Raven through while keeping the ocean out. The runabout settles onto the bay floor, completely dry.

Near a bulkhead hatch, you see an elegant alien waiting for you. They're wearing an exo skeleton that provides support to their body which appears reasonably humanoid. The biologically attuned of you would recognize as boneless like a cephalopod from Earth. Perhaps the humanoid shape is a construct of the exoskeleton.

https://i.imgur.com/0ICJXSV.jpeg
Nov 30, 2024 8:10 pm
Aurin marveled at the elegant complexity of the modifications to the shield and propulsion, watching through the viewscreens as they dashed through the ocean as if soaring through the air. He had clearly had more modest expectations, a skimming of the surface followed by a leisurely submergence to the facility. It pleased his sensibilities, and he was looking for uplifting diversions in the face of the tragedy they were racing towards.

He was inordinately glad that the aliens had agreed to proceed in good faith. Apart from his ethical objections to the subterfuge - the potential legal and moral quagmire that concealing their motivations might invoke - he had little confidence in his ability to uphold a ruse. He had been told he had the poker face of a five year old klingon. The white lie of wobbling a few power conduits to buy time was a far cry from trying to remember his imaginary motivation in the face of numerous possible suspects.

As they emerged into the bay, he took a moment to take in the biology of their host. He inwardly mused at their overt admiration of the humanoid form, and their potential misunderstanding of... certain human cultural mores vis a vis their... mammalian traits. Perhaps he would have a chat with them later, oviparous species to oviparous species.

Despite it all, he was glad to finally set down at the conference. He glanced curiously towards the Commander. He would definitely wanted everyone to be on the same page as to the tenor of their interactions, so he held back any pithy comment to let him set the tone.
Dec 5, 2024 1:06 pm
Cole joined the rest of the crew in marveling at the view provided by the runabouts forward viewscreen as Luna expertly raced through the water, sea life abundant and scattering out of the way as they sped towards the station that oddly, despite wondering what else he had expected, looked much like a space station. Offering praise to a job well done and an appreciative smile to his pilot he made to disembark.

The delegate that met them was no less strange and elegant than their recently met allies and despite his fascination with the aliens biology Cole made every attempt not to gawk, instead approaching with his hand extended and his best most diplomatic smile as he made introductions before inquiring about the business at hand.

"We were met upon arrival in system by a delegation who had been in attendance before the murder of their ambassador planetside. In the interest of diplomacy, as well as to allow our own delegation to attend the conference, we agreed to assist in uncovering the truth of the incident," he stated, his tone non-threatening.

"We make no accusations, just hoping my science officer might be allowed to examine the scene?" he said, a single brow arching in both question and pleading as he attempted to gauge the elegant beings reaction and mood at the question.

"I am designate Zza. Please follow me to your quarters. We can talk there and speak of whatever you wish."

The alien in the exosuit, seemingly ignoring your request for access to the crime scene, leads you down a hallway. The station is built for the humanoid form, and it seems (she?) is the only one finding that awkward. In a turbolift she says, "Brown 17," to the attendant computer and when you're all inside, the lift ascends a couple levels. In the welcoming hallway, she leads you to a door.

"These quarters have been delegated to Starfleet for your time here." The doors open, revealing a suite with eight cabins off of a central sitting area. A huge floor to ceiling window takes up the entirety of the far wall. "Privacy controls are here," she shows you the panel before the door, "and the resident software will provide you what you need to know about the station. Welcome to Tyroth."

Before you can remind her, she says, "I understand you'd like to speak with our head of security. He will arrive in five Federation minutes."
Dec 13, 2024 2:57 pm
Cole's eyes narrowed ever so slightly, brow furrowing, and face pinching in the beginnings of a frown as the even stranger alien seemingly ignored his request and motioned for he and the team to follow her to their assigned quarters. Exchanging a look with the rest of the team, he shrugged, nodding towards the attendant in an indication to follow. The station, odd considering their host's apparent awkwardness with her exosuit and bi-ped means of locomotion, seemed designed with the humanoid form in mind, reminding Cole of the countless space stations he had visited across the galaxy. They were taken to their quarters, an expansive suite with rooms off a central sitting area, but what drew his attention was the large floor to ceiling view at the far wall. Whistling he stepped to the window, taking in the underwater scene with a small grin of wonderment before acknowledging their hosts helpful instructions. Turning from the seascape, he smiled and thanked Zza for her hospitality, stating he appreciated her setting up a meeting with their head of security.

When the doors slid shut, the smiled faded from his face and replaced with a serious narrowing of the eyes and grim, tightening of his lips, "Drake. Luna. Check for listening or other security devices.

"Aurin. See what the computer will give you access too --- or more importantly what it might not give you access too."

Turning to the remaining members of the team, "Doc. Jayce. I want you to join me in speaking with the security chief, mainly Doc so you can ask what specifics you may have regarding the ambassador's body and Jayce to observe and provide your opinion on the chief's overall presentation and demeanor. Luna and Drake scour the suite using tricorders and determine that the only listening device is the passive voice control system on the computer panel, which can be disabled and re-enabled at the panel. Further checking that when disabled, it does not continue to listen.
Dec 14, 2024 9:23 pm
"Commander, I can disable the voice control system and stop it from listening. Shall I do that now?"
Dec 14, 2024 10:02 pm
"Let's see what the computer can tell us." Aurin sat down at the computer, trying to pull up as much information as it would allow on their environs, the local newscast, and other publicly available info, but also the information that a diplomatic mission with its own security detail might want - local security feeds, historical feeds of their own domicile, and any alerts they may want to be aware of - and any information on the recent murder, of course.

He didn'ttry to hack anything - no need to get intrusive right away, when they hadn't shown themselves to be uncooperative.
Dec 16, 2024 12:42 pm
With a brief considering look, Cole turned towards the ensign and shook his head, "Negative, Ensign. Let's see what Aurin can find out from the interface and let's meet with our host first."

It did however beg the question, he couldn't help but think, did the interface 'listen in' on the Amabassador's murder.
Dec 16, 2024 3:52 pm
The panel gives the level of information that is guidance to newcomers. From a description of the station's purpose (marine biology) to maps to all of the facilities, and even descriptions of the technology used to operate the station (all of which is of limited access for security purposes - guided tours are available), the panel provides you with everything you might need to know to attend the conference.

Speaking of the conference, an itinerary is available which indicates that the conference officially opens tomorrow morning at what the Federation would call 9 am, local time.

As to news of the possible murder of the alien diplomat, the wording around that is vague, speaking only of tragic circumstances that result in a participant species withdrawing.
Dec 16, 2024 5:58 pm
"It looks like we are esteemed attendees of tomorrow's talks on...." he scrolled for a moment, "The potential hazards of decentralized alignment in self-fractalizing picomechanical networks."

He glanced up. "I do remember signing up for that one, but it doesn't look like we have any secure access, yet."
Dec 21, 2024 5:04 pm
The high tech security system seems well designed. It's possible that an experienced engineer might be able to defeat the firewalls and access the broader systems, but it wouldn't be easy and chances are you'd be noticed.

This leaves you only a few options:
* Attend the conference and gather information through conversation with the other attendees
* Operate as a spy cell and steal any information you can from security
* Attempt to ingratiate yourselves to the hosts and have them give you access
Dec 21, 2024 10:08 pm
"Sounds really interesting, Aurin-Ah. I always wanted to learn more about picomachanics' dangerous decentralisation." Luna replies ironically but friendly "But attending the conference may create opportunities to talk to people and find out more about the murder in a discreet manner."
Dec 22, 2024 11:56 am
Perhaps while we attend, we can make friends and influence people as the Earth saying goes she smiles and her tail flicks while she speaks
Dec 22, 2024 6:17 pm
"Indeed, I've come across that saying a few times myself, Doctor. The conference could prove to be very enlightening for our investigations and educational as well."

Drake had never been to a conference of this scale, and he was quite excited by it.
Dec 23, 2024 12:52 pm
Scratching at his scruff, Cole considered his options, his face scrunched pensively and hearing his colleagues suggestions. "Agreed. We continue on as we were meant to and attend the conference. Doc. Aurin. As you are the more scientifically minded of us you will most likely have to lead that charge," he finally intoned.

"When the security chief arrives I'll see if I can't also plead our case regarding solving the mystery of the ambassador's murder and ingratiate ourselves to security."
Dec 24, 2024 6:50 pm
In a short while, there is a chime at the door. When you open it, you see another alien in an exoskeleton, although this one is more worn and less shiny, as if he's been rebuilding a hydraulic system.

Dec 30, 2024 2:36 am
"It would also ease our investigation if you had any information or leads - forensic or otherwise. If we could open proper channels to request access to things like security cameras and occupant records, it would certainly ease things. Surely you have a team on this case - we wouldn't want to stumble over one another, or miss anything because we were both holding half of a puzzle piece."
Dec 30, 2024 2:46 am
Security Chief Orda is about to say yes, but then mulls over his words first. "I can do remit some of this. I can certainly show you the place where the accident occurred. You're welcome to take whatever readings and scans you wish. However, access to our technological systems I cannot allow. Too many visitors here rely on our discretion, and their safety cannot be compromised despite the well meaning intentions of your delegation."

You're welcome to attempt to discern the chief's motivations. A D2 task, success giving you some clue as to what he feels about all of this.
Dec 31, 2024 3:47 pm
At the security chief's arrival the Away Team, each understanding their assigned roles and tasks, immediately pressed the alien for details to which Orda agreed in part. Cole's eyes widened a bit at the refusal to allow them access to the station's systems, briefly entertaining pointing out that the safety of the visitors to the station had already been compromised, and that the murderers could easily strike again, but instead decided to remain at least at this juncture diplomatic. Returning his facial features to a more neutral expression, Cole smiled and extended his hand as he made introductions whilst attempting to judge the strange alien's intentions, or at least how truthful the chief was being.

Here's a summary of what you found from examining the scans of the alien captain's body:
Quote:

"We will be discrete, Chief Orda. Have no fear on that score," Drake assures as he follows him down the corridor wondering what's in store for the group. His senses remain on high alert for any threats that could befall them.
Jan 14, 2025 8:25 pm
Following Chief Orda, Cole listened with interest as the strange, alien security chief gave a brief history of the facility and explanation for their cautious approach to the investigation. Nodding politely in agreement with his own security 'chief' statement Cole added, "While my team studies the scene, would it be possible for myself and Lieutenant Devar to meet the Executive Board?"

Luna follows security chief Orda and the rest of the team. She gives a bit of thought to the security chief's words "You said "falsely implicating someone"" she asks "Does that mean there are some easy scapegoats at the station you fear we would unjustly accuse?"

She was thinking of the talk of shape-shifter earlier but caution stopped her from touching the subject. Orda could be a shape-shifter for all she knew.

Orda considers Walkers request only for a moment before saying, "I can contact their adjutant and indicate that you request a meeting. I can't speak as to their availability but there is no reason why they wouldn't meet with you."

To Luna, he says, "There are disagreements between many of the races here, politics that they bring from their contact away from here. Anytime someone is inconvenienced, they ... " He holds out his hands palm up. "That's not important. I only mean to say that there is enough biased blame to go around."
Jan 21, 2025 4:03 pm
"It's not our intention to ruffle any feathers," his crewmates could probably hear the smirk in his voice, though it certainly didn't show up on his stiff beak, "but we will need to pursue hypotheses, even if they prove incorrect in the end. We can't simply... not investigate an implication because of its political weight - then our conclusion is just as likely to be false, and any accusation would be mere conjecture."

Aurin looked around the corridor, curious about the crime scene. He glanced down at his PADD, reviewing the autopsy information, readying himself to search for anything relevant when they arrived.
Jan 21, 2025 6:35 pm
Drake listened quietly, anxious to get to the scene, while looking for tells in Orda's behavior that might show any discomfort with anything his crewmates might have said. There were politics at play here, which was unfortunate, as that had a tendency to stifle an investigation.
Jan 22, 2025 7:41 pm
Cole hid a small smile at his science officer's pun, nodding in agreement with Aurin's assessment and statement regarding their investigation and them following it to its conclusions regardless of whom and who may not be implicated. Offering in support, "I would hope Starfleet and the Federation's reputation for fairness and honestly proceeds us though of course we'll be as delicate as we can be."
Jan 24, 2025 2:57 am
You arrive at the scene of the death. Orda pulls up a few security scans of the scene and then transfers them to your Starfleet accessible database. "The maintenance crew has cleaned the area, of course, but you're welcome to take whatever scans you would like."

He pauses and then says quietly, "Good luck. I have three suspects in mind, but I will allow you to investigate as you see fit without being swayed by my own suspicions. Only after you meet with the council, I will give you what I had assembled before your arrival." He refuses to elaborate if you ask.

How to you proceed?
Jan 24, 2025 7:59 pm
Arriving at the scene Cole rubbed at the stubble on his chin, his eyes narrowed and brow furrowed in thought as he surveyed the, understandably, clean scene. Thankfully the station's security detail had taken scans before the maintenance crew had done its job that Orda immediately brought up and provided access to. Nodding his appreciation at the security chief's assistance and offer of his own notes on the investigation, Cole extended his hand and took Orda's in a firm handshake before turning towards his team. Motioning with a hand for them to proceed with what scans and inspections they could as he perused the scans provided.
Jan 24, 2025 9:18 pm
"How do they compare?" Drake asked, sure that something would stand out in the pictures taken before the security detail cleaned up the scene versus what they'd see after they had cleaned up.
Jan 25, 2025 1:10 am
M'Ress does a scan looking for traces of biological matter left behind. Any hint of what might have happened in more detail than they've already received
Jan 25, 2025 6:01 pm
Following their high tech cleaning procedure, it's a D4 to find any traces by scanning - a tricorder provides a free assist die.
Jan 25, 2025 7:36 pm
Luna looks around to see if there are any surveillance devices in the room. Orda would probably have informed them if any recording exists but you never know if he had forgotten or is withholding information.

She also looks for ways in and out of the room or good hiding spots. If the Ambassador was stabbed in the back it would either be done by someone sneaking up on the victim or the victim had turned his back to someone. The former would require some way for the assassin to get up to his victim undetected. Luna searches for the possible way to do that.
Jan 25, 2025 9:02 pm
Aurin opens the case he had brought from the ship, producing a series of tubes and filters that would take a sample of the atmosphere, and isolate any unusual particulate. He took the possibility of nanotechnology being involved quite seriously, apparently.

Once he was done with that, he turned on his tricorder. Trusting the doctor to take stock of any... biological residue that might have been left on the scene, he scanned specificially for the strange ceramic that had shown up on the autopsy.

Exactly so! I'll remove a momentum from the pool and that's a complete success.
Doctor M'Ress uses the data that was provided by the alien scans and tunes the tricorders to detect that specifically. She quickly discovers microscopic residue with the same DNA signature. Setting the equipment to run a lengthy background test for an exact match against the captain, she then examines several anomalies. She checks it and then checks it again.

The tricorder meanwhile finishes the analysis.
Exact genetic match confirmed.

The final anomalous samples however, belong to an invertebrate, likely a creature analogous to a terran cephalopod. The gene samples however are contaminated with strands of some other DNA. Ferengi DNA.

Momentum: 2
Threat: 5
Jan 30, 2025 10:08 am
Well this is strange.
Feb 1, 2025 6:08 pm
Orda leaves as the good Doctor begins her analysis, promising once more to relay your requests to the council that rules the station.

As you wait for the results, several more invertebrate aliens move through the corridor, but not many as it isn't a main route. They stare at you politely, curious about your absurd anatomy, but continue on.
Feb 1, 2025 6:55 pm
Luna is still trying to figure out how many door or ways to in there are in the room. And if there are any possible hiding spots (curtains, closets, cupboards)
Feb 1, 2025 8:37 pm
Drake was delighted to see more aliens and had to refrain from returning their curious gawping. His job was to see to the crew's safety and therefore he echoed what Luna appeared to be doing, but with a more trained eye. An ambush was not something they wanted. As the crew got closer to solving the murder, that could be a real threat at any time.
Feb 2, 2025 4:38 pm
The_Librarian says:
Well this is strange.
"Do you think it's residue from the killer?" Aurin scratched the side of his head, part of him hoping it was that simple.
Feb 2, 2025 7:22 pm
Luna examines the area for any surveillance devices in the room, and finds that there is one on a smart-wall to the right. It isn't clear if the angle of the camera would cover where the death occurred, which was right inside the door. It is likely that the attacker was in the corridor, but there is a storage closet that might be large enough for a thin biped to stand in.

Aurin's testing of a sample of the atmosphere, doesn't isolate any unusual particulate. If nanotechnology was involved, which certainly could be expected given the symposium's topic, it didn't leave a trace in the air.
As to scans for the strange ceramic that had shown up on the autopsy, he'll need to do a more thorough Science roll.

D2 Reason-Science roll, with a helper die from the Tricorder (i.e., roll 3d20).
Feb 2, 2025 9:07 pm
"There is a surveillance device here on the smart wall" she remarks discreetly to the others. "Strange how no one has offered us to see any footage yet. Perhaps it will be in the materials Orda promised to show us after meeting with the council."
Feb 3, 2025 10:10 am
"Im not sure, but it seems out of place to the others. Maybe he stole the weapon for profit." she glances over the scans again
Feb 4, 2025 5:55 pm
Aurin peered at his Tricorder being very thorough, not wanting to overlook anything. The site being so thoroughly cleaned up was, while understandable, going to make their job much harder...

As the Away Team went to work, Cole politely offered the security chief a subtle nod and small smile, as Orda departed and promised to relay their requests to the strange stations ruling council. Predictably, with the rather thorough cleaning of the scene there was little that remained and what was found seemed to be traces of the cleaning crew. What he joined his crew in finding fascinating was the presence of Ferengi DNA. While Cole's mind did not necessarily jump to accusing the mystery Ferengi of the murder, the entrepreneur nature of the race and their propensity for finding monetary or political advantage in any and all situations didn't exclude them from happening upon the murder after the fact and helping themselves to what, if any, tech may have been left behind.

At Luna pointing out the surveillance camera, cleverly hidden in the smart wall within the room, Cole mentally noted to ask the council and security chief about the recording. The angle would not afford a view of the actual murder but perhaps their could be a sound analysis performed, maybe catch a glimpse fo the killer in a reflection, or similar. Offering congratulation to Luna for the find he also spoke his thoughts on the usefulness of the recording to Aurin and the Doc.
OOC:
@GreyGriffin Woohoo! An additional Success. Do you want to use for getting Additional Information?
Feb 5, 2025 3:42 am
Aurin-ah completes his scans, and then the tricorder beeps that it's complete. Scan complete. Match to ceramic composite sample found. Additional isotopes identified. Updating files.

Examining the readouts, you can tell that the same ceramic substance found in the alien captain's body is located here. Further, you'll be able to exactly identify a match if you find another sample, down to being able to distinguish between matching items which was here in the hallway.

What's the next move? Wait for the council? Go to a seminar?
Feb 9, 2025 5:18 am
"We should move about the station and see if we can pick up traces of this material. It's the most unique thing we have tied to the crime scene." He tapped at his tricorder. "We could probably manufacture a micro-scanner that interfaces with our comm badges to keep a look out while we are attending our other duties..."
Feb 9, 2025 12:33 pm
"And keep watch for Ferengi, I doubt there are many here right now." She stows her tricorder. "Why don't we explore the summit? Take in a seminar?"
Feb 10, 2025 7:48 pm
Nodding his agreement, Cole thoughtfully scratched at the stubble on his chin, "I like it. A 'canary in the coal mine' so to speak," he chuckled, wondering if he two scientist would get the old Earth adage.

"I'll keep Jayce and Luna with me while I see what the Council has to say.

"The rest of you explore the Summit. Keep Drake close. If the killer, or killers, now we are investigating the might want ensure we don't discover the culprit and have someone be investigating our own murders."
OOC:
Cole would like he meeting with the Council. If Drake, Doc, and Aurin want to join and be involved with that then by all means do so.
Cole was merely throwing out a suggestion.

I figured ya'll might want to get doing your sceincy stuff and leave the diplomacy stuff to Cole :-)
Feb 10, 2025 9:07 pm
Cole is ready to keep those that explore the summit, as safe as possible.

You follow the instructions provided by smart walls and arrive at the conference. The main speaker hall is in session, the signs indicating that the current seminar is titled Magnified Psychology in the Miniaturized World.

You see one ferengi woman in a pant suit helping herself to coffee from a replicator. She's reading from a PADD while she does so.

From the hall, the dull murmur of a speech can be heard.

The Council Chambers
After being extended an invitation to speak, Commander Walker and company find themselves at the doors to the meeting room of the Council. The doors are open and there are no guards present, as one would expect at an academic conference. Inside three beings sit on chairs reading tablets, while a fourth watches the water outside, their hand on the glass with what might only be described as longing.

As you enter, one of them looks up and says to three others, "The United Federation of Planets delegation has arrived. Let's get this started." She waves for you to take one of the empty seats at the table. "This is Jargam, Suzyn, Tragmod and I am Glekrar. Together we the administrators of this complex. How can we serve you?"

Luna takes a seat and casts a look towards Cole. Better let him or the others do the talking, though see is dying to learn what the council has to say about the surveillance of the murder scene.
Feb 18, 2025 9:19 pm
The security chief it seemed had been quick and efficient in relaying their request to the ruling council, as an invitation to meet was extended int short order, leaving Cole and approved nod as the rest of the crew moved on with their investigation into the Summit. With a small shrug, he motioned for Luna and Jayce to follow.

As the doors slid aside Cole took in the room, identifying the members of the Council quickly before turning his gaze to the view beyond, joining the lone standing member of the delegation in marveling at the serene underwater scene. Another broke the silence, informing the others of his and his team's arrival and gestured for them to take seats at the table. Smiling politely, Cole approached and quickly made introductions, straightening his uniform as he set. "I assume Chief Orda explained our situation?" he stated diplomatically once introductions had been made, "That in addition to our attending the conference we have been asked by another delegation to assist in the investigation of their murdered ambassador?"

He held up a hand, non-threatening, to stave off any protestations before continuing, "And by no means are we insinuating your involvement or fault. Simply that we were asked as a neutral party to assist." Again he offered his most polite smile, his tone sincere, "Certianly we do not wish to disrupt the conference and I see no reason for it to continue unabated as I'm sure the Chief is on top of any additional security measures and requirements he deems necessary to ensure the remaining delegations safety.

"However Chief Orda did say that any request for access to security footage would have to be approved by this Council."

It's coupled with a sense of accomplishment, in that which we achieve we do so on our own without them help of the Tal Shiar, or the Federation's own mysterious spy division obtaining advances through theft or military conquest." He let's that marinate a moment and then says, "Given the attitudes of our many guests, you can see why we'd be hesitant to give Starfleet even the appearance of unfettered access."

I know there are two schools of thought when it comes to rolling dice. First one being that if at first you don't succeed than try, try again.

The second thought being that I rolled, wasn't successful and that if I want to roll again I need to come up with a different angle (i.e. different skill roll).

I wasn't clear as to the Difficulty. Let's consider that it's an Extended Task, with Difficulty 5. If you accumulate those successes, they'll give you full access to the sensor logs for the area around the murder.

However, to get another roll, you need to do something different, provide another argument, offer to do something unrelated for them, or give up something of value.

Cole's eyes narrowed slightly, a small tightening of his jaw, as he considered the councilman's accusations, whether they were meant to be taken as such or not, and forced a smile. "I assure you we are not here to solicit yours or anyone else's membership into the Federation and I applaud your ability to remain autonomous and neutral," he stated, forcing a smile, "And our reputation as fair and compassionate diplomats is also well earned, your insinuation that our intelligence service is in the habit of stealing technology through theft or conquest might be considered an insult ...

"If I weren't aware of the rumors of an elusive and secretive organization within the ranks of Starfleet Intelligence. I assure you that any such faction would be considered rogue and not sanctioned by the UFP no Starfleet.

"I think history has shown we discover our technology through innovation and the collective strength of a variety of different worlds and cultures AND why I believe we were asked by the wronged delegation as a respected and neutral party that they could trust to provide them with the truth whether that was favorable or not."

"We however are cognizant that many of the delegates here are intensely concerned with safeguarding their autonomy. Our concern for justice is tempered by a need to avoid an unnecessary public backlash."
OOC:
Three accumulated successes.
Feb 27, 2025 6:37 pm
Cole's eyes flared wide momentarily, a firm set to his jaw as he reigned in the rough temper of his youth growing up on a frontier ranch, keeping the frustration at the Council's continued stubborness from his voice as he continued, his tone even, "The Federation does not solicit nor force worlds or civilizations into its membership like some conquering Empire so I assure you the other delegates autonomy, should they not wish to join the Federation, will remain intact.

"You speak of unnecessary public backlash while ignoring the most aggrieved party, that of whose delegate was murdered, not to mention I would think the concern would be that members of the other parties won't suffer the same fate and the killer found and brought to justice ... realizing that in the course of an investigation some feathers might be slightly ruffled - if you excuse my human expression."

His eyes narrowed slightly, meeting the council members in turn, not in a threatening manner but more disappointed, "What of the delegations whose ambassador was murdered? They don't seem to trust in your desire to bring the killer to justice. Any 'backlash' to the culprit would be deserved. So ... about that security footage and more cooperation in the investigation?"
OOC:

Aurin had been prepared to stand up for the Federation, but Cole's adroit response to the council made his feathered brows perk up. He did not have the force that the Commander had mustered and brought to this meeting.

He took his time, eyeing their opposition, carefully formulating a response if Cole's rhetoric flagged and he needed a moment to regroup, but he did not want to impede his momentum by interjecting...
Mar 4, 2025 4:49 am
The alien council deliberate and secretly vote among themselves using wrist mounted tech.

"Very well, we will authorize Orda to share the data with you. We look forward to your report on your investigation. Should there have been a breech in our security, preventing such tragedies in the future will be Orda's primary concern."

One of the others adds, "After we apprehend the suspect, of course."

The first one makes a handsign that might be an acknowledgment. "Of course. To that matter, you will leave the apprehension of any suspect you identify to Chief Orda. How he might involve you further will be his prerogative."
Mar 4, 2025 6:33 am
"It is not and was never our intent to impugn on your jurisdiction, Chief Orda. We simply want to get to the truth of the matter." Aurin folded his hands, relieved that the aliens had heard them out and agreed. Running parallel investigations would be wasteful and potentially disastrous.
Mar 4, 2025 9:44 pm
Luna smiles triumphantly on the team's behalf. This was a small win for their investigation. Cole had handled it excellently. Clearly, these aliens are very protective about their data and sovereignty.

The Council
They awkwardly take Cole's hand, having only a vague notion of what to do.

One of them, the most liberal of them it seems, escorts you into the hallway. "You're on dangerous grounds I'm sure that you know. Out here beyond the edge of your Federation, many fear a loss of autonomy more than they are jealous of your egalitarian society. There are those who cherish freedom above all other concerns."

He offers no more insight as to why he's made this observation, but leaves you to your own devices.
Mar 6, 2025 3:03 am
Drake leans in and says in a low voice to the doctor, "That Ferengi woman, she's acting like she's expecting something unpleasant."

He nods to where she is sitting. "I'm glad we are in the back also. I am going to pretend that I need to use the bathroom and look around. Maybe make a slow entrance back and see if I can figure out what is making her so nervous. Keep an eye on the audience, will you please?"

Drake slowly stands up and heads toward the exit, trying to remain inconspicuous so he doesn't disturb the lecturer but at the same time noting the details of the room and any unusual movement.
Mar 6, 2025 7:55 pm
Inwardly Cole smiled at the alien's awkwardness towards his firm handshake, even though he knew the human custom not necessarily for everyone, particularly those cultures who despised touching. Despite the smile he felt, he mouth drew even and his lids narrowed as one of the council members followed them into the hall with a warning, or perhaps threat, the strange beings alien features giving nothing away. As diplomatically as he could, Cole offered the councilbeing a nod, leaving the host to interpret the gesture as he would before turning and motioning for the rest of the team to follow, eager to compare notes with the more straight shooting security chief.
OOC:
Just to see if I might be able to add some Momentum to the pool, I'm going to roll.

Insight 9 + Security 4 - to determine if the council member was offering some advice/fact or veiled(ish) threat.

1 Success

Rolls

Insight 9 + Security 4 (13) - to discern the meaning of Council statement - (2d20)

(715) = 22

Mar 6, 2025 8:30 pm
Cole believes that the being was trying to warn you about something, perhaps just a vague notion on the resistance the Federation should expect everywhere on the station. Or perhaps saying that the amount of assistance they will grant after this should be expected to be minimal.
Mar 8, 2025 5:19 pm
Assured the council member's words were not a direct threat, Cole still made a mental note to remain vigilant and on guard. Tapping the badge on his chest, "Drake. Our meeting with the Council went as expected and they are willing to assist however they were somewhat clear that not everyone in attendance is enthusiastic about our presence. Keep your eyes peeled ... Less the Christa be investigating our murders as well

Satisfied he motioned for the team to follow, eager to compare notes with the Chief.
Mar 10, 2025 9:10 am
M'Ress nods in agreement but whispers back Be careful, I don't trust any of them
Mar 13, 2025 10:13 pm
Drake suddenly recognizes something he missed. Feeling dumb, he stops short and goes back to the doc. Sitting beside her, he leans in and says softly, "See the Ferengi woman by the replicator, drinking coffee? I think we need some coffee too."

As he heads toward the replicator, Cole's message comes in. He responds and acknowledges.

Cole and his reports return to the space given to Starfleet but are contacted by Orda before they get too far.

The message goes: Directions below to my office. Your accounts have been authorized for access to station security recordings of the incident. I do hope you don't enter the security code which is definitely not the transponder of your shuttle craft and gain access to the live station logs.
At the conference

Do you want to wait for the next lecture, or listen to Drake's plan?
Mar 17, 2025 6:08 pm
Cole smiled at the security chief's report, appreciative that it seemed that they had at least one ally on the station. "Luna. Return to our suite and begin analyzing the security footage. Aurin can assist," he ordered, offering the young pilot a smirk and wink, "And certainly don't access the live station logs that we most certainly have not been given access too.

"Jayce, with me. Let's go pay Chief Orda a visit."
Satisfied that everyone had their marching orders, he offered the team a nod before motioning for the ship's counselor to follow, spinning on his heels to follow Orda's directions.
Mar 17, 2025 9:39 pm
The station live log was the first thing, Luna checked once she got to the suit.
"Aurin, can you help make any sense of this?" she asks looking curious at the feed. What wasn't they supposed to see? She wonders
Mar 20, 2025 6:25 pm
Aurin came in behind Luna, closing the door behind him, before turning to the monitors. Before they got up to anything too illicit, he flexed his wings as he leaned over the desk, obscuring the viewscreen from the recorders they knew were present.

"Hmm... where do you suppose we aren't supposed to be looking?"
Mar 21, 2025 9:45 pm
Luna looks up from the monitor. Good question what were they "not" looking for?
"Perhaps unusual guests? Someone that is not expected to be here?" she suggests "Or unusual activities before or after the murder? We need to get a closer look at what these logs contains"
OOC:
What kind of data are we looking at? Logs or video footage?
Mar 21, 2025 11:09 pm
The records are mixed. Station sensor readings, access logs to local doors and elevators, and video/sound footage of the area of concern.

Care to make a mixed Difficulty, Initially+Conn roll? If one of you helps the other, add an extra d20.

D1 gets you the murder time fairly easily.
D3 gets you a a clear analysis of the murder.
D4 gets you data analysis of everyone on the station who could or could not be in the area.
Mar 22, 2025 9:44 pm
OOC:
Luna got insight 9+conn 4= 13 and no relevant focus. If Aurin is better at the job, please roll and Luna will roll an assist. We probably should spent momentum on this to buy extra dice
Mar 24, 2025 9:50 am
OOC:
sorry was having phone issues
The doctor nods and joins Drake. What are you thinking?
Mar 24, 2025 6:05 pm
"The murderer is likely Ferengi, so I am thinking we should strike up a conversation and see where that takes us."

Drake approaches adopting an air of innocence. "Hello. How's the coffee? I am Drake and this is Dr. M'Ress."
Mar 24, 2025 8:57 pm
Aurin leans over the console, fishing around with one talon as they scrolled through the footage.
OOC:
Sorry, been sick.

I agree we should spend some momentum - Aurin's Conn + Insight is 11. Relevant specialties might be Sensor Operations (to actually operate the cameras) and Uniform Code of Justice (to find solid evidence). If we have the Momentum to spare, Aurin can also employ his Did the Reading talent to use Science in place of Conn, putting him at a 14 and counting as having a specialty.
Mar 25, 2025 4:55 pm
OOC:
better you roll then, GreyGriffin. I'll just do the assist now
Luna looks at the monitor as Aurin-Ah is browsing around, trying to spot anything unusual.

Rolls

insight 9+conn 4= 13 - (1d20)

(11) = 11

Mar 25, 2025 11:13 pm
At her coaxing, Aurin took the lead, scanning the footage for anything that correlated to the readings they had taken and the reports they had gleaned from the victim's compatriots. He understood that their hosts were being more than accommodating, and did not want to waste their hospitality, or their time...
OOC:
Aurin will spend 1 Momentum to invoke Did the Reading. We will spend 1 more to Create Opportunity. Aurin will also invoke his value "Culture is a catalyst for celebration, not a cause for war," to spend a point of Determination to defuse this potential conflict where multiple cultural mores and political perspectives are clashing and everyone is trying to save face. If that is a valid spend, that will give him an additional automatic 1.

Conn 9 + Science 5 (Did the Reading) [14] - (1d20, 1d20, 1d20)

1d20 : (19) = 19

1d20 : (18) = 18

The Conference Centre
You approach the Ferengi scientist who is sipping her drink, a Klingon Raktajino it smells like, and reviewing her PADD while listening to the speaker. A woman of multitasking skill. Of course, Ferengi women are often relegated to subservient roles in their culture, rarely allowed to wear clothing much less drink raktajino and hobnob with scientists.

She looks up at Drake and M'Ress, and holds up her coffee by way of a greeting. "Hello Huuu-mahn," she drawls, her sharp teeth making out sounds more sinister than it is likely meant. "Federation send you to learn from the best?"

The Suite
Aurin-Ah starts off slow but with Luna's expert assistance soon catches the moment of the murder. The feed has a strange kind of interference suddenly, and it takes some time for Aurin-Ah to interpolate the data enough to identify the two individuals. You recognize the alien captain who's body you examined. Analysis reveals the Ferengi attacker as DaiMon Krel, a free trader.

DaiMon Krel moves swiftly, his lobed head glistening under the dim corridor lights as he closes in on the alien captain. The towering, boneless officer barely has time to turn before Krel drives the shimmering synthetic blade between the plates of its powered exoskeleton, twisting it with a practiced flick of the wrist. A wet, clicking hiss escapes the captain’s helmet as it slumps against the bulkhead, its bulbous eyes dimming.

Krel doesn’t hesitate as if profit waits for no one. He kneels, his fingers deftly searching the alien’s harness until he finds what he came for: a polished data crystal, glowing faintly in the suddenly red emergency lights. Slipping it into his coat, he wiped his blade on the corpse’s uniform and vanished into the shadows, perhaps already calculating the margin on his next deal.
Mar 26, 2025 9:13 am
M'ress gives an equally toothy Cheshire Cat smile, but says nothing
Mar 26, 2025 2:24 pm
Drake, somewhat intimidated by the Ferengi's teeth, buys some time by helping himself to the Raktajino. Throwing an irritated look at the doctor for remaining silent, he decides to be direct.

"Yes. But also to investigate a murder." He watches the Ferengi for a tell but then realizes he's not sure what that would look like for one of her kind.
Mar 27, 2025 1:06 am
OOC:
To be clear, did you take her raktajino?
Mar 27, 2025 1:18 am
OOC:
No, I thought that was what brand the coffee is so he got some.😁
Mar 27, 2025 1:45 am
After ordering a raktajino (Klingon coffee) from the replicator and waiting for it to be produced, Drake has a chance to look at the Ferengi scientist. She's a bit of an oddity, but what really catches his attention is her near spit-take when he mentions a murder.

"What are you implying, Huuu-mahn? This is a conference in ethics. I always knew they didn't teach that in the Federation."
Mar 27, 2025 9:23 am
They do teach that along with tact, in medical school. You will have to forgive him, humans, right? she shrugs, and smiles, a real one this time, tail swaying slightly, playing good cop.
Mar 27, 2025 6:53 pm
Drake wonders if the doctor noticed the Ferengi's reaction to the news of their investigating a murder. He casts a glance her way to see if he can read her and then fake laughs when the doc plays good cop.

"Ethics aside, there was a murder." Drake grabs his coffee and watches the scientist squirm a little as he takes a sip.

"Would you mind telling me what you know?"
Mar 28, 2025 4:26 pm
So, this Ferengi is the killer. But what is that object he is taking? Any ideas? I don't recall anyone mentioning something being stolen from the dead guy. Luna says taking the analysis at face value

She drinks her Klingon coffee slowly watching you two. "A murder. You must mean the Plynlik ambassador, Gillokol. Unless there's been another?" She waits a second and then asks, "Are we gossiping or are you investigators? I only ask out of fairness."
Mar 29, 2025 11:01 am
M'Ress shrugs requests a tea for herself, happy to get...hopefully...the one she didn't have the chance to drink earlier. Perhaps a bit if both really. I thought as a fellow scientist we could speak about the summit, the gossip, what have you. Rather surprised I hadn't heaed about it...probably in one of the journals back logged on my PADD. This one wants everything to be investigative she gestures to Drake
Mar 29, 2025 5:02 pm
Drake knows he's not the most diplomatic and plays along with the doctor, thankful for her friendly encouragement toward the Ferengi scientist. His hackles raise a little though when the Ferengi suggests she is only asking her questions out of "fairness".

Sure she is.

Nodding at the doc's comment, he continues to play along. Shrugging his shoulders he admits, "It's true. I can't help myself."
Mar 30, 2025 2:57 am
"Well, if this footage is accurate, the facts of the murder are clear." Aurin folded his arms. "The weapon, the victim, and the culprit are clearly visible. And it seems like the culprit attempted to inject some interference into the surveillance footage - luckily it didn't completely garble the data."

"It looks like he absconded with a data crystal." Aurin tried to focus on the moment the object was taken. "Curious. If it was valuable enough to provoke such a crime, why was it here?" He looked skyward, as if he could see the alien ship on station, at whatever interplanetary orbit it had taken up as not to threaten the conference. "If it is some kind of state secret - a covert handoff of some kind of intelligence, perhaps - that would explain why our hosts are so close-mouthed... and why the victim's associates are so up in arms, above and beyond the usual outrage."

She brightens at M'Ress' interest. She doesn't offer a hand but introduces herself. "Doctor Prirra, Oncology. The next speaker is why I'm here. Clopp Setti, the Breen geneticist. They are proposing some exciting developments in interspecies phylogeny. Also, I hear they wear lifts."
Mar 31, 2025 7:50 pm
Drake offers his hand despite the scientist not offering hers.

"Drake Zarah, Security." If she takes his hand, he will squeeze gently and meet her eyes. If not, he would meet her eyes anyway. If he can put her on edge, maybe she will stop sidestepping the question.

"So what do you know about the murder? What are the gossipers saying and what do you think happened?"
Mar 31, 2025 9:54 pm
M'Ress perks up, her ears twitch with interest. ooh that is fascinating. Doctor M'Ress. Chief Medical officer. she offers a hand as well
Apr 1, 2025 8:53 pm
"Or it could be some important piece of science? Definitely something worth killing for. It seems pretty obvious this is the culprit. But then why hasn't this case already been solved? Why is he being protected? Why did we get warnings not to jump to conclusions about the suspects?" Luna asks puzzled.

"It all seems so clear cut from this footage. Maybe I just overthinking this. Maybe we should just go apprehend him straight away?"

She straightens and stares at Drake her teeth bared in what might be an attack posture, or equally likely, a Ferengi smile. "You've mentioned a murder. Twice now, security hoomahn. Allow me to all why you think I in particular would know something about that. Unless you're asking all the guests, I should not presume you're not."
Apr 2, 2025 2:26 am
Drake figured it was time to cut to the chase.

"You might know something about it because we have ascertained that the murder is a Ferengi, much like yourself."

He wasn't going to reveal who he had quesioned. It was none of her business.

"You seemed startled when I first mentioned it."

"Humans can be rude that is certain" she rests a hand on Drake's shoulder, but also tries to gauge if there is anything about her mannerisms that seem to indicate she's hiding something.
"Perhaps you and I can chat after the next lecture. I wanted to stay but Im sure this one wont let me. I would love to see your notes" she sips her tea. "And hear whatever passes for gossip of course".

Suppressing the urge to sneer at the tiresome scientist, he casts a glance at the doctor, signaling his support for her plan. He hoped he’d unsettled the Ferengi just enough to make her want to confide in M’Ress.

"I'll leave you two to gossip then," he says, making another cup of coffee for himself. He then returns to his seat.

The scientist watches Drake get a coffee, her eyes following him suspiciously all the way back to his seat.

Then, to M'Ress, she says, "There's a workshop tomorrow where we deconstruct a Tal'Shiar device and examine the real world implications of the socio economic and ethical ramifications. The inside scoop is that there will be real terror in the implications." She sips her raktajino. "Did you sign up?"
Apr 3, 2025 9:10 am
M'Ress smiles, I will now, that sounds disturbing but in a strangely good way
She attempts to register on her PADD
