Against the Cult: Getting Away with It (1.8a)

"Let me look. I can do it without light, hopefully not alerting anything or anyone to my presence," Theran suggests, offering a small chant to focus his mind and then sneaking forward.

Reptile shakes his head and gestures with the lantern he's picked up again: he's comfortable going without a shield, and he is confident that he can hack well with his axe in one hand. He lets Theran slip through the door and does not follow to allow him to move unseen in the darkness.

OOC:
Sorry I didn't provide these maps sooner!
As Theran slips through the door, this is what Reptile and Myrtha can see:

Meanwhile, Theran steps through the door and out of the bar of light coming through the opening. He can see that the passage continues southwest for a few feet, then forks into three separate passages: the right passage heading nearly west, the middle passage heading roughly south, and the left passage opening slightly southeast. The width of the passages varies wildly, from narrow to really narrow.

Realizing there is far too much to explore on his own, Theran will back out and have them bar the door again after he's out. "There are three forks. We should investigate... but not now. We need to work through the inn and try to clear ourselves and our allies."
Nov 18, 2024 2:59 pm
"Do we go through Bertram's room, and perhaps take him along with us, or do we go through the stairs into the kitchen? Either way, we'll soon have to fight our way through the place. Where do you say we head to, Theran? The upstairs rooms?"

Myrtha was still anguished with the prospect of her companions being slaughtered outside while Reptile, Theran and herself decided what to do. At least the body had been disposed of, for now.
OOC:
Just a questio nof clarification, @spaceseeker19: there are benches and a table in this room, but no drawers, cabinets or any other furniture the obvious function of which would be to contain notes, ledgers or other documents, correct?
Nov 18, 2024 7:08 pm
"May as well head through the kitchen. With any luck, it'll be mostly empty from everyone coming after us. But we need to head upstairs," Theran replies once he's confidant the door is secured properly. "We should go." With that, Theran will exit the room and head up the stairs to the kitchen.

OOC:
Correct; if there are records of devious plans and dark deeds, they're not kept here.
Nov 19, 2024 1:03 am
At the bottom of the stairs, Reptile pauses. "What's the plan? Someone goes first, quietly, or do we just rush in, trusting in speed?" The former city watchman's hand tightens on the haft of his axe.

"I figured just walk in like we belong there, and ignore any dissenting opinions as we head upstairs... unless they make it so we can't ignore them," Theran replies as he climbs the stairs.
Nov 19, 2024 8:23 pm
"Well, let’s do it then," the warrior stated curtly. "You both stay close to me so I can shield you."
OOC:
I’m stating in advance that I will attempt to cover my companions using Myrtha’s reactions to impose disadvantage on incoming attacks.

Theran leads the way up the stairs with Myrtha and Reptile close behind him. Theran opens the door to the kitchen and casually walks in; all is dark, which is not surprising on reflection. It is the middle of the night, after all. When there is no immediate danger, Reptile lowers the hood on the lantern to dim the light. They close the door to the cellar softly behind them.

They all can see well enough to navigate through the cramped and cluttered kitchen area, and the lantern is dim enough that Theran can tell that there is a light source elsewhere, as light is showing through under the door to the common room. Either someone is still awake out there now, or they left a fire burning and it hasn't gone out yet.

Note: the stairs behind Reptile are the ones leading down to the basement. The kitchen curves around that stairwell, with a door in the east wall opening from the kitchen into the common room.

"Ready for this?", Myrtha asked as she moved towards the kitchen door, shield on her arm and her long blade held with its point hanging down. If they were noticed by anyone in the next room, there would be no doubt that she was ready for violence, even if she was not displaying an obvious commitment to splitting skulls.
OOC:
Was Theran suggesting we act as if we were clients of the Inn? That would mean sheathing swords and slinging her shield over her back. She is of the mind that there is no way we will be allowed to pass through the common room unchallenged, so she's ready to fight back against the villagers. In metagamy-lingo : she's thinking this is a combat encouner, while Theran might be hoping it'll be a social encounter. Which is it?

OOC:
Neither, really. Theran was going to ignore anyone they ran into unless that person(s) outright attacked. He wasn't planning to stop to talk, or offer up any stories as to who they were or why they were there, or threaten anyone into subserviance. He was simply headed to the stairs up unless someone physically barred his advance.
Nov 20, 2024 7:25 pm
Myrtha heads to the door and gets ready to open it.
OOC:
Works for me. She’ll step in first, you and Reptile make a beeline for the second floor and I bring up the rear and/ or cover your advance to the stairs. If they try to stop us, we’ll decide what to do. If my memory isn’t failing me, there were no exits on the second floor, not even windows. So we might be pinning ourselves up there, but that’s a risk we might need to take.

Myrtha opens the door and steps through into the Golden Grain Inn's common room, with Theran and Reptile right behind her. A low fire flickers in the fireplace in the southern wall, backlighting three figures seated at a table near the bar, between the party and the stairs: two smaller figures, and the unmistakable bulk of Bertram Beswill. The three of them turn in surprise as the door opens, and Bertram exclaims: "You...!" and as the three PCs emerge, they rise to their feet. Bertram smiles. "Welcome back. I guess the same trick won't work on you again, eh?"

Just a few reminders:
- the front door is to the southwest, currently out of view.
- the stairs up are to the southeast (just seen in the lower right of the map above)
- there is a closed door just a few steps away from you (to the right on the map above)
- the light is dim, but there is enough for targeting and navigating the environment without darkvision

Each of the PCs should roll initiative.

Reptile sets down his lantern and grips his axe with both hands, remembering the gang of people led by Bertram who tried to kill him two days ago.

"Stay out of our way or you'll get more of the same. Unless you enjoyed being bandaged and defenseless in your bed..."
OOC:
I feel like Intimidation is in order... not sure about advantage, but wasn't Reptile one of the two who put Bertram down before?

Rolls

Intimidation (CHA) - (1d20+1)

(9) + 1 = 10

Advantage? - (1d20+1)

(17) + 1 = 18

Initiative - (1d20)

(1) = 1

Prepared for action in advance, Myrtha let Theran's threat hang in the air as she moved forward interposing herself between these thugs and her companions.
OOC:
Guess since we did not come in with immediate violence in mind, there is no surprise round, correct?

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+2)

(7) + 2 = 9

OOC:
Technically, there are no surprise rounds anymore. Surprised is a condition.

OOC:
There is a reason why these guys were not caught flat-footed by the sudden appearance of adventurers, though they weren't expecting that particular door to open. So they are not Surprised this first round.

Note that we are using the 2014 5th edition rules, not the 2024 5.5 edition ones, so calling a first round in which some combatants are surprised a "surprise round" is essentially correct: a surprised party gets no actions or reactions on the first round.

In the 2024 rules, a surprised combatant only has DISADV on its initiative roll.

Note 2: I'm running late this morning, and have to get on the road. I'll post the start of the first turn later in the day.
