You’ve been ordered to head to the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons to investigate a break in. Your orders were given to you personally by the Commander of the City Watch himself, Sir Samuel Vimes. You remember his words well. He was particularly clear that all three points were equally important.

1. Find out what happened.
2. Protect the people of Ankh-Morpork.
3. Don’t cause more paperwork than necessary.

With the Discworld RPG: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork currently raking it in over on Kickstarter, I wanted to see whether there is any interest in playing the sample adventure from the quickstart rules.

The system is very is rules-light and designed for single session play, so this would be a oneshot and I would aim to begin at the start of November. We would use the pre-generated characters from the PDF (members of the Watch) which gives room for five players in total. There is an Oxventure actual play of this scenario out there, so if you want to go into the adventure blind, do avoid that.

Familiarity with the Discworld books is a requirement for this one, since Adventures in Ankh-Morpork is very much a narrative-led game and it's important everyone aims for a similar tone.

Here's how it plays:
Quote:
The RPG is powered by a simple dice roll, comparing your die with the GM's Narrativium die. Whenever you do something that has a chance of failure, you'll follow these simple steps.

Justify the Action Using Traits
GM Determines the Outcome Die
Roll the Outcome Die Against the Narrativium Die
Get Help (optional)
Resolve the Test (not optional)

By picking a trait from your character and using it to justify your chance of success the GM will decide which die you roll - anything from a d4 to a d12. You roll that, while your GM rolls a d7A*. If your outcome die has rolled higher than the GM's Narrativium die, you're successful! But if the Narrativium die is higher, then you've failed, and may now be subject to unforeseen consequences or twists, represented as new traits!

*Avoiding all possible mention of the dice's sides, which is the number between 7 and 9.
Given all that, I would suggest a more regular check-in schedule would be a good for this game, maybe 5/week, but we would absolutely be playing it by ear. In any case, let me know if you're interested or if you have any questions!

The forever DM heard Opportunity knocking. And Opportunity wasn't just knocking, it was hammering, kicking, and thumping in a violent display of portal combat.

I AM YOUR PERFECT GAME. LET ME IN.

The forever DM ignored it. He was quite happy smoking his familiar pipe, sitting in his familiar threadbare comfy 5e. And not just any 5e, it was his 5e in the Forgotten Realms. And not just anywhere in the Forgotten Realms. It had to be 5e on the west Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms (but not too far south, unless it was Chult). Because, in the DM's experience, familiarity breeds content.

But Opportunity was also a master of headology. The forever DM heard it padding away from the door, and as it departed it whispered, GNU Terry Pratchett.

The DM's hand holding his pipe paused in midair, as if his life-sentence of nicotine addiction[1] had been suspended. Nicotine had been given a brief reprieve, and it was memory's turn in the dock.

The DM had first started reading Terry Pratchett as a teen in the 80s. To the DM's parents, the novels looked like trash with Josh Kirby's colourful covers showing cartoonish flying chests, not to mention Bethan's cartoonish chest. His parents hoped he'd grow out of discworld, but as the decades passed the DM grew into it. Terry Pratchett grew into discworld too, adding nuance and shading. Pratchett's works stopped being satires of classic fantasy, and started becoming satires of society, justice, epistemology, and economics. And Pratchett found economics easier to satirise that Conan, because economics was clearly more ridiculous.

"Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?" That was the origin of GNU Terry Pratchett. Our clacks code that he never be forgotten. But the DM had never forgotten him. The DM's Waterdeep was Ankh-Morpork but as hawked by CMOT Dibbler. Dagsohn was Carrot but scaled down in the X and heroic dimensions. And the DM couldn't even remember the names he'd given the NPCs who were clearly Colon and Nobbs. Terry Pratchett was so much a part of the DM that he'd show up in the DM's 23-and-me test.

The DM leapt up, his pipe scattering the ashes of hesitation's cremation. He ran to the door, opening it and screaming at the departing Opportunity.

"No! Please! Wait! It's not important that you do, it's more than that, it's personal!"
[1] One advantage of nicotine addiction life-sentences is that they tended to be shorter.

I have just started reading Discworld and I like the satirical tone of writing and whimsical world of Discworld. I completed Guards! Guards! few days back and love the comical City watch and Patrician regulating the city of Ankh-Morpok. So, I would love to give this one a try.

I owe my spoken vocabulary to all the Diskworld audiobooks I heard. I have heard every book at least 3 times and the Watch series more than that.

English is my second language

What book would fit the adventure best?
I'm between books right now, and could pick "Guards, Guards, Guards" for my next one. Or "Thud" of that one fits the time better

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'll start getting everything together and invite you all when the game is ready. As I say, that won't be until the beginning of November.

If it is Guard, Guard, I will not do a dwarf! I don't want Carrot to make me cry of shame because I did not hold the standards given by my Mama.

The player characters are not from the books, they are made up for the game.
