Scene 4: The Tower

As the party steps through the dungeon door, it is clear they are finally entering the bottom of the tower as evidenced by the stone staircase curling upwards. Candlelight illuminates a pair of doors on the next floor and reflects off scattered treasures in the basement and on the stairs. Through the broken pieces of floor, the adventurers see scattered sunlight streaming in from higher floors. Brightly colored plants grow thickly throughout the basement. A skeleton tucked in the corner is almost engulfed in plants. A spider that must have sneaked through is skittering along narrow empty paths through the plants, but a leg touches a beautiful large petal and it freezes and shrivels up.

Firina slowly enters through the door. Noticing the dusk smell and the colored plants.

"Yikes. This place is quite creepy" she says, looking at the skeleton engulfed by the plants. "Poor fellow. What would have happened to him?"

After business has concluded, Alax follows behind Firina, silvered frying pan in hand, looking not quite as brave as the Dragonborn picture in Inn Plain Sight.

"Hrm, yes, I agree about the creepiness. I’ve never actually gone into the tower proper…"

Alax’s scaly head shakes sadly looking at the skeleton in the corner.

"Must have passed away long ago and ended up as fertilizer for the plants…"

Merton peeks his head in and then steps back, waiting for the others to move through before following.

Edging away from the foliage, "...I don't know. Did you see what happened to that spider? I swear it keeled over when it walked on that flower."

Pulling a silver piece out of his pouch, Hindle flings it over towards the enshrouded skeleton.

Leana and Brickowsky follow the others.

The silver piece flips in the air, bounces off the skeleton's head, and lands on one of the bright plant's petals. It smokes a little and the edges turn black, but it remains on the petal. Alax holds the silvered frying pan close upon watching the coin turn color.

"Yikes. I don't know what those tjings are - but fon't touch the plants. Best be very careful." Firina says, entering the room very carefully, on the lookout for plants and possibly more oversized spiders.

Leana takes a few steps towards the flowers, not too close, and tries to identify them. Maybe they could just be burned or frozen? Could they be ignored? Devoured by some animal?

Brickowsky does the same, only he seems to try and remember anything he knows about magic and plants that might fit.

Firina does see another oversized spider in the shadows, also avoiding the plants. Hindle, Merton, and Alax stay near the entrance for now, evaluating their next moves. Leana steps towards the flowers and tries to use her knowledge of plants and the reaction of the spider to determine its identity.

Upon closer inspection, Leana determines these are actually flowering shrubs called Ginger Lady oleander, known as one of many poisonous plants imported to the area. The sap the petals release can cause enough damage to instantly kill a weak creature like a spider and would cause substantial damage to the party if multiple plants are touched.

Brickowsky peers around Leana's inspection and lets out a little cry of delight. The Ginger Lady oleanders are dangerous, but the vitriol, the poisonous sap, could be collected to make elixirs of necrotic resistance. He tried to remember how they were often harvested. Fire was definitely a no go as it would aerosolize the sap, poisoning their lungs instead. If fire wouldn't work, shouldn't its opposing element, ice, work well?

Leana and Brickowsky share their knowledge with the group, warning them against getting too close or using fire. They suggest trying ice and ask for their friends' opinions on the topic. Do they have time for this?

Leana uses just a little water on one of the smaller plants to experiment. She sprinkles some of it on a few leaves from afar, then uses her powers to freeze the liquid to find out what happens.

Clever use. I always forget about how handy that spell can be. :)

Hindle gives a derisive snort at the plants name, "More like 'Devil Lady', if you ask me." While Leana busies herself with the plants themselves, Hindle tries to determine whether there is a way to and up the stair without having to traipse through any of the caustic things.

Leana takes water out of her canteen and flicks it over to the plant the spider touched, using her magic to direct the water onto a leaf and then freezing it. The leaf is perfectly encased in ice and falls off the plant. A thick black sap slowly oozes out from the severed plant limb as the frozen leaf cracks apart on the exposed stone floor. Even from here, the group can smell a sweet, almost sickly scent from the sap. Brickowsky looks on excitedly and exclaims, "That's the vitriol needed to make an elixir of necrotic resistance!"

Meanwhile, Hindle is trying to track a path through the plants, looking for both safe access to the stairs and avoiding dangerous plants or traps. A tingle in the back of his mind and a sharp smell of salt water invades his senses as he realizes the plants with pink petals zigzag through the foliage and make a path to the stairs! They are smaller than their brethren and the party could have a higher chance of making it through without touching a caustic petal. He looks up as well. Maybe they could build something to take them above the plants?

Ha ha, don't feel like you're forced to build though! If you guys have spells or abilities to go over the plants, that works well too! Nothing dangerous on the ceiling or poking out of the walls at least.

Firina takes out a torch and looks at Leana, "You'd guess this works?" she asks, holding her tinderbox near the torch and looking at the plants.

"No, no - fire produces poisonous smoke - remember?"While Brickowsky gathers some of the compound with due diligence, Leana asks Firina: "What do you think? Is there another way to get over the plants safely?"

"We could likely make our way across by treading through those pink plants. They don't seem to be the same as these nasty ones." Looking at the door they came through, "Perhaps we could this to form a narrow walkway to cover at least some of the distance more easily? I'm not sure how far it would get us."

Putting his thought into action, Hindle begins reforming the door into narrow planks to use.

Brickowsky only has to crouch down a little to gather the vitriol that flows from the injured plant. As he does so, Firina and Leana discuss how to get across safely, considering Hindle's suggestions to follow the pink plants with aid of a walkway. Hindle takes the door off its hinges and disassembles it to make narrow planks for the walkway. Merton nods at Hindle's plan and says "I'll grab some more from the dungeon." Merton and Alax go to fetch barrels and the bench to add to Hindle's wood planks for the walkway.

@Dhakhan Go ahead and describe what kind of walkway Hindle wants to make and roll DC 10 for it to be stable enough for more than one use.

Being no carpenter, Hindle simply lays the first plank down across the plants, attempting to place it across or near the center and puts his weight on it to splay out the leaves. After the first one is down, he carefully walks along the span and places the next and continues, wending his way along as far as he can.

After the second, board he conjure Miet out of the aether and sends her off to inspect the "scattered treasures in the basement and on the stairs." "Go see what that is, and check that skelton out a bit more closely. ...and NO RESTING. If you touch any of those plants, your feet will melt off!"
