Chapter 01: A Strange Summons

From all over the city you converge onto the Menthis Plateau, to the University District in Upper Menthis, where Morgrave University is located. Upon arrival and giving your name, you are escorted through well manicured grounds and hallowed halls to a set of large doors deep inside the University.

As you all are assembled, you are greeted by a gnome with a pointed white beard and twinkling blue eyes. "Hello, hello. I am Lassias Lynn Lanador, Dean of the School of Draconic Prophecy. You all have been summoned because the great Flamewind has seen that you are tied to a piece of the Draconic Prophecy. Please prepare yourselves to be touched by greatness, as very few are called to be part of the Prophecy."

With that the double doors open, and Lassias leads you inside a great hall, at the other end of which is a large dais of polished stone. Sitting on the dais is a sphinx. She has the body of a giant lion, but orange stripes mark her deep black fur, and seem to ripple as she breathes. Her great falcon wings are pure black and folded over her back. Her face is that of a beautiful elf woman with feline features. Her black hair has the same pattern of orange stripes running through it. She gazes upon you, but says nothing.

Just as Kue sees the sphinx, she steps into a fighting stance and grabs her sword - but doesn't draw it. Instead she returns the gaze and slowly returns to a more normal stance.
She eyes the gnome. Was that what you meant by "prepare yourself"? She is clearly pissed at Lassias and keeps a weary eye on the sphinx.

Me? Tied to a Draconic Prophecy? Tapu thinks sarcastically. That Oracle lady might have to check her prophecies. On the other hand, that might be easy money to be made and legal, so he wouldn't have to lay low as usual. Maybe they can give advance payments? Tapu made a mental note to ask for that... for now, he just copied the sphinx, saying nothing.

"Don't worry Jonesy, you're much prettier." Kyras whispers to his companion, after looking over the sphinx's features. While waiting for her to speak, he looks over the rest of the group, trying to get a feel for them.

Then, suddenly, Flamewind speaks! "Kyras Blackthorne, Dane Gareth, Tapu, Lady Kue, and Contemplation. I have brought you here on a matter of grave import. You are brave, and bold, and spoken of in prophecy." Her eyes light with an arcane blue glow, and she speaks again, almost as if in a trance now. "When Madness and Night align, and innocent blood waters the dark tree, the Brave and the Bold must claim the Coat of Eyes, and bear this burden for the good of all."

Her eyes return to their former bronze shade, and she lowers her head. "I have spoken." She then says no more.

Lassias begins to clap and bounce up and down with excitement. "Marvelous! Simply marvelous."

"Now thank the gods that it was clear!" Tapu says, his voice filled with frustration. "She could have been cryptic or something." He adds sarcastically. Turning to the Gnome, he asks, "Care to translate that to common?"

Lassias turns to Tapu. "You're correct, normally the Prophecy is hard to decipher. It can sometimes take years to understand the meaning of a passage. Fortunately in this case we have some advantages. We know that Madness and Night "aligning" likely has to do with the conjunctions of the planes of Xoriat and Mabor, which will happen in about a month's time. And it just so happens that an associate of mine received word about something called the Coat of Eyes just yesterday. I think it's clear that your to seek out this Coat and claim it before something horrible happens during the planar conjunction."

At the human's (?) sarcastic remark, Ky decides he likes this one. He also has a bit of a sneaky look to him and tries to remember if he's seen the man before. Perhaps at the ARC (Annual Rogues' Convention)?

After listening to Lassias's explanation, with some skepticism himself, "So just like that, because of a dream she had, we're to traipse off and save the world?"

Lassias looks at Kyras with a frown on his face. "Don't you see how momentous this is? You've become a part of history just by being named by the prophecy. Why wouldn't you follow where it leads?"

Tapu didn’t know who that Kyras person was, but he liked the response. He wasn’t opposed to doing something different, but he was not going unpaid, that was for sure. "So, listen, Lassis, I respect your enthusiasm and all, but I am not so sure about Oracles and all that. It’s not that I don’t believe her—I mean, I have dreams and wake up believing they were real. My point is that I can go and fetch that Coat of Eyes for you, alright, but first I must see what’s in it for me. Let’s talk fees, equipment, and expenses, and if I like what you offer, I’ll be right off."

Lassias' face softens. "Ah yes... yes of course... you'll need to be funded. Well as a dean here at the University of Morgrave I can certainly fund an expedition to retrieve an ancient artifact. Let's see, you'll need to travel to the Shadow Marches where your contact is, so you'll need supplies for the trip. And of course funds for unforeseeable out of pocket expenses. I think I should be able to swing about 2500 galifars for the journey."
OOC:
A galifar is a gold piece, equal to one dollar in the rulebooks.

"‘My dear friend Lassias,’ Tapu says. ‘You should have led with that. No need to put on that entire Oracle show. Now I am not sure about the others you invited here,’ Tapu looks around at the other people present, ‘I am sure we can negotiate a good agreement based on your initial offer.’ Tapu thinks to himself, ‘I hope the others won’t agree on that initial amount too fast.’ He fixes a look at Kyras, hoping he was shrewd enough to get the hint and chime in, and if Tapu was not mistaken, Kyras was in a similar line of work as Tapu."

Nodding at the halfling's words, Kyras chimes in to the gnome, with a smile, "By your own words, you mention something horrible happening. And the lady mentioned bearing burdens for the good of all. These both sound rather ... unhealthy for those involved. I think we need more than just $2500 for all ... Unless the lady has another group prophesied as backups that value their lives for less?"

Tapu tried to hide a grin at Kyra's words. He liked this guy more and more and thought he could be a useful partner for future business once this was over.

Lassias nods. "Your arguments are reasonable. I can get as much as $4000 for you all. But you should leave as soon as possible. It's a long way to the Shadow Marches."
Nov 8, 2024 12:04 am
Giving Kyras an admiring glance, Tapu turned to Lassias. "For 4,000, my friend, I won’t even need to go home and pack. Just point me in the right direction, maybe throw in a map, and off we go."

Contemplation tilts her head to the side at the mention of the payment. It was a considerable amount. She turned to Lassias. "This is acceptable."
