It's another hot and humid day in Sharn, called by some the City of Towers and others the City of Daggers. Little micro storms kept erupting among the spires, adding to the moisture in the air. It was as if the city had its own little atmosphere, separate from the one enfolding the rest of the world.

Tapu is hanging out at one of the watering holes. To him, Sharn is not a city of wonder; it’s just his hometown. Right now, he is low on funds, so he is scheming his next "business venture." In his eyes, all the people around him are sheep going about their daily business. He has his eyes on one of the bigger merchants’ warehouses. It would be an easy, boring job—just go in and out with some cash. He knows where the merchant keeps it, and the building is lightly guarded. No biggie.

Kyras grabs a pack of smokes from the bodega owner, leaving a tip he pilfered from the pockets of a noble on the way there. He opens the pack and lights one up, taking a long inhale before blowing it out lazily. His mark was across the street dropping off a hefty bag of platinum coins to the shop owner. A worthy snag, but it wasn't what Kyras was after. As the courier leaves the shop and heads further down into the city, the half elf waits a beat, puts out his smoke, and follows.

Tapu, you're into your cups and imagining how you're going to spend your wealth when you feel a tap on your shoulder. It's a young halfling, wearing the livery of a House Orien courier, She hands you a sealed scroll and then walks away.

Contemplation is doing what she does best; people-watching. She sits quietly in a tavern, watching the customers and passers-by with interest. People fascinate her. Even though she is made in their image, she wonders what it would be like to be a "regular" person for a day.
Nov 3, 2024 12:52 am
Tapu, frustrated with himself for letting someone sneak up on him, eyed the scroll suspiciously. Who from the House of Orion knew him and knew he was here? He really should change his hangouts more often. Carefully, he unrolled the scroll.

Didn't have anything specific in mind, kept it vague on purpose. But if he was going after something worth more than pure $, I'd say it's schematics for a game changing tech device, perhaps an improved creation forge, that House Cannith is very interested in, hoping to use it to maybe skirt the Treaty of Thronehold and regain some of their former power. While Kyras is employed by House Vadalis, he still likes to take on the occasional job from other Houses when his services are requested. Equal opportunity and all that. Loyalty is overrated.

Contemplation, as you gaze upon the crowd in the tavern, a human man with the mark of passage on his neck enters. He scans the crowd for a moment, and his gaze settles on you. The House Orien heir is dressed in simple but fine clothes, and has a messenger bag hung on his shoulder. He walks up to you and says, "Pardon me, are you Contemplation?"
Kyras, you're closing the gap on your mark when all of a sudden a large gargoyle drops from the sky and lands in front of you! The startled crowd parts for him, stunned by his arrival. He's got a leather back pack strapped to his back, and before you can react pulls a scroll from it. He drops it into your hands and says, in a voice that sounds like boulders rubbing together, "This is for you sir." Then without another word he leaps into the sky.

Kue raises her tankard in salute. To Nine! He was a good man. May he find the piece in death that he didn't find in life.
She drinks until the tankard is empty and slams it into the table to the "here-here" and similar acknowledgements from the rest of the wake. Twelve men and women were at the funeral, most gathered in a closed room in one of the larger alehouses.
She lights a candle in front of her and stands back, to allow another friend of Nine to say something

Startled by the sudden encounter with the massive beast, Kyras loses sight of the mark.
The crowd gasps for a different reason, as seemingly out of nowhere Jonesy, his faithful and almost as massive animal companion joins the fray, ready to protect his master. As the gargoyle ascends, he lets out a loud growl then goes to nuzzle the half elf. Kyras scratches the black Jaguar, "It's okay Jonesy, appreciate the quick assist. Looks like we need to continue the job later. Natchez won't be happy."
Lighting another smoke, it dangles in his lips as he carefully unrolls the scroll to read it.

Kue, as the next in your group steps up to speak about Nine, the door to the room slowly opens. A human man steps into the room. His clothing is of civilian style, but you recognize his military bearing right away. He has close cropped brown hair and a scar on his left cheek. A pin with the symbol of House Deneith fastens his cloak to his shoulder. He sees you and walks toward you respectfully. "I beg your pardon for the interruption. I was told giving you this was a matter of some urgency." He places a scroll in your hand, gives you a short bow, and walks out of the room.
Nov 3, 2024 2:31 pm
Kue retreats to a cornor and reads the scroll without disturbing the others.
House Deneith? They are mercenaries. Oh well
She breaks the seal and reads - just in case he needed an answer to return with.

Contemplation looks up and nods. "I am she. Is something wrong? Have I offended?"
Nov 3, 2024 8:52 pm
"No... er... ma'am. He stammers for a moment. Perhaps he's not used to talking to warforged. "I was told to find you and bring this to you." He hands you a sealed scroll, then turns and leaves.
Nov 5, 2024 2:10 pm
The scrolls all read the same.
"Greetings,
Lady Flamewind of Morgrave University asks you attend her presence in a matter of some urgency. Please come to the University and ask to be escorted to her chambers.
Thank you,
Lassias Lynn Lanador

Contemplation rises and places the scroll in her belt pouch, then moves to the door. Outside, she stops a passerby to ask for directions to the Morgrave University before heading in that direction.
Nov 5, 2024 4:31 pm
"Well, isn’t that something," Tapu thinks to himself, a summons from an Oracle. "OK then, maybe I should check that out." He empties his cup and heads towards the university.

Finished reading, Kyras glances at where the courier was last seen, then folds the scroll back up. "Nope, he won't be happy at all."

From all over the city you converge onto the Menthis Plateau, to the University District in Upper Menthis, where Morgrave University is located. Upon arrival and giving your name, you are escorted through well manicured grounds and hallowed halls to a set of large doors deep inside the University.
As you all are assembled, you are greeted by a gnome with a pointed white beard and twinkling blue eyes. "Hello, hello. I am Lassias Lynn Lanador, Dean of the School of Draconic Prophecy. You all have been summoned because the great Flamewind has seen that you are tied to a piece of the Draconic Prophecy. Please prepare yourselves to be touched by greatness, as very few are called to be part of the Prophecy."
With that the double doors open, and Lassias leads you inside a great hall, at the other end of which is a large dais of polished stone. Sitting on the dais is a sphinx. She has the body of a giant lion, but orange stripes mark her deep black fur, and seem to ripple as she breathes. Her great falcon wings are pure black and folded over her back. Her face is that of a beautiful elf woman with feline features. Her black hair has the same pattern of orange stripes running through it. She gazes upon you, but says nothing.

Just as Kue sees the sphinx, she steps into a fighting stance and grabs her sword - but doesn't draw it. Instead she returns the gaze and slowly returns to a more normal stance.
She eyes the gnome. Was that what you meant by "prepare yourself"? She is clearly pissed at Lassias and keeps a weary eye on the sphinx.

Me? Tied to a Draconic Prophecy? Tapu thinks sarcastically. That Oracle lady might have to check her prophecies. On the other hand, that might be easy money to be made and legal, so he wouldn't have to lay low as usual. Maybe they can give advance payments? Tapu made a mental note to ask for that... for now, he just copied the sphinx, saying nothing.
Nov 6, 2024 6:59 pm
"Don't worry Jonesy, you're much prettier." Kyras whispers to his companion, after looking over the sphinx's features. While waiting for her to speak, he looks over the rest of the group, trying to get a feel for them.
Nov 6, 2024 9:47 pm
Then, suddenly, Flamewind speaks! "Kyras Blackthorne, Dane Gareth, Tapu, Lady Kue, and Contemplation. I have brought you here on a matter of grave import. You are brave, and bold, and spoken of in prophecy." Her eyes light with an arcane blue glow, and she speaks again, almost as if in a trance now. "When Madness and Night align, and innocent blood waters the dark tree, the Brave and the Bold must claim the Coat of Eyes, and bear this burden for the good of all."
Her eyes return to their former bronze shade, and she lowers her head. "I have spoken." She then says no more.
Lassias begins to clap and bounce up and down with excitement. "Marvelous! Simply marvelous."

"Now thank the gods that it was clear!" Tapu says, his voice filled with frustration. "She could have been cryptic or something." He adds sarcastically. Turning to the Gnome, he asks, "Care to translate that to common?"

Lassias turns to Tapu. "You're correct, normally the Prophecy is hard to decipher. It can sometimes take years to understand the meaning of a passage. Fortunately in this case we have some advantages. We know that Madness and Night "aligning" likely has to do with the conjunctions of the planes of Xoriat and Mabor, which will happen in about a month's time. And it just so happens that an associate of mine received word about something called the Coat of Eyes just yesterday. I think it's clear that your to seek out this Coat and claim it before something horrible happens during the planar conjunction."

At the human's (?) sarcastic remark, Ky decides he likes this one. He also has a bit of a sneaky look to him and tries to remember if he's seen the man before. Perhaps at the ARC (Annual Rogues' Convention)?
After listening to Lassias's explanation, with some skepticism himself, "So just like that, because of a dream she had, we're to traipse off and save the world?"

Lassias looks at Kyras with a frown on his face. "Don't you see how momentous this is? You've become a part of history just by being named by the prophecy. Why wouldn't you follow where it leads?"
Nov 7, 2024 5:54 pm
Tapu didn’t know who that Kyras person was, but he liked the response. He wasn’t opposed to doing something different, but he was not going unpaid, that was for sure. "So, listen, Lassis, I respect your enthusiasm and all, but I am not so sure about Oracles and all that. It’s not that I don’t believe her—I mean, I have dreams and wake up believing they were real. My point is that I can go and fetch that Coat of Eyes for you, alright, but first I must see what’s in it for me. Let’s talk fees, equipment, and expenses, and if I like what you offer, I’ll be right off."
Nov 7, 2024 6:17 pm
Lassias' face softens. "Ah yes... yes of course... you'll need to be funded. Well as a dean here at the University of Morgrave I can certainly fund an expedition to retrieve an ancient artifact. Let's see, you'll need to travel to the Shadow Marches where your contact is, so you'll need supplies for the trip. And of course funds for unforeseeable out of pocket expenses. I think I should be able to swing about 2500 galifars for the journey."

"‘My dear friend Lassias,’ Tapu says. ‘You should have led with that. No need to put on that entire Oracle show. Now I am not sure about the others you invited here,’ Tapu looks around at the other people present, ‘I am sure we can negotiate a good agreement based on your initial offer.’ Tapu thinks to himself, ‘I hope the others won’t agree on that initial amount too fast.’ He fixes a look at Kyras, hoping he was shrewd enough to get the hint and chime in, and if Tapu was not mistaken, Kyras was in a similar line of work as Tapu."
Nov 7, 2024 10:05 pm
Nodding at the halfling's words, Kyras chimes in to the gnome, with a smile, "By your own words, you mention something horrible happening. And the lady mentioned bearing burdens for the good of all. These both sound rather ... unhealthy for those involved. I think we need more than just $2500 for all ... Unless the lady has another group prophesied as backups that value their lives for less?"

Tapu is amazed by Lassias' excitement about that so-called prophecy. It was clearly just a ruse to make a group of witless so-called adventurers steal a valuable item that was most likely priceless. Nobody raises the pay from 2,500 to 4,000 in an instant, no matter how good the argument was. Not that he minded much; he made a living out of getting stuff, and once he had it, he might as well up the finder’s fee some more. Turning to Lassias, Tapu says, "So once we’re there, where do we find that Coat of Eyes? How well is it protected? Who will try to get it back once we st... I mean, acquire it? Who is your local contact that told you about the whereabouts? I might have some more questions before we head out." He was surprised that nobody else seemed to want to know more about what needed to be done.
Nov 10, 2024 10:50 am
Lassias is taken aback by all Tapu's questions. After a beat he regains his composure. "You're to seek out Doria Veladaar in the village of Blackroot. She's a House Tharashk inquisitive and former resident of the village. She'll have more answers for you there."

Contemplation regards Kue with an impassive glance. Impassive because she lacks the capacity to look otherwise. "During the war, I was designated W313-018. I have since given myself a new name, Contemplation. I suspect that you are correct in your thinking."
Nov 11, 2024 6:35 am
Tapu looks at Lady Kue and Contemplation, trying not to let his irritation show. "Okay! Listen there, Lady Kue and whoever, whatever you are. I think we already established that this is not a rescue mission or whatever the Oracle was babbling about. However, they’re paying us 4,000, and I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that kind of money, so I am going along with it. Also, I think Lassias strongly believes in this. So the Oracle has him enthralled or something. I don't really care. So you guys can do whatever you want, but I am going."

Cool it halfling! If you listened to was I said, I'm doing this job as the money seems good. I'm just aware that trouble can be waiting for us when we return.
And if you wen't so blinded by the promise of coins you would see it to.
She turns to Contemplation. Interesting name. What side was W313-018 on, during the war? The wording should make it clear that Kue reconises that W313-018 and Contemplation are no longer the same person.

Contemplation thinks for a moment. "During the war, she served with Cyre. It was... an experience."
Nov 11, 2024 4:30 pm
Contemplation turns to face Tapu. "My apologies, Master halfling. I will be accompanying the group. You are correct in that it is a considerable sum for our services. Such that makes me suspect there is more than what we are being told. I believe that Lady Kue is also correct in her assessment that we may be in greater danger than we know."

Seeing tempers rise, "Everyone just relax. No need to start in-fighting before we've even properly begun. Since when has $4,000 ever come that easily, prophecy or not. Tapu was deep in thought as he entered the airship. Not that the novelty of it was lost on him, but he felt uneasy about the whole thing now. There was no doubt in his mind that this was a heist, but with all the people involved, he was now convinced that it was a trap of some sort. Too many people knew where they were going and most likely knew the reason. So, more and more, he was convinced that they had willingly walked into an elaborate trap. He just needed to figure out who his companions were and if he could trust them. Once he entered the airship, he sought out Kyras. "Kyras, can I have a word with you?"

"Well, I was thinking," Tapu started. "So we’re supposedly on a mission to acquire some sort of legendary item, if you believe the Oracle. We all know it’s a heist mission. The issue I’m having is with all the people who know about our ‘mission.’ We also weren’t given any concrete information other than that we have to go to that place and find our own information. Then there’s the issue with how willingly they almost doubled the reward. I get the feeling that we’re running headfirst into a trap. What do you think?"

Kue is lounging on the deck, enjoying the wind in her hair.
I'm properly the most experienced in recovery missions. The royal flush did... what? 20 retrieval missions?
Contemplation might be competent, but the others are civilians.
No plan ever survives first encounter with reality. Improvising is key.
She notices the halfling speaking with the ranger. He could be dangerous - or an asset if his energy can be directed correctly.
She rubs her dragonmark on her chest. It always itches when close to an elemental like they are right now.

"You haven't been at this long, have you." making a statement more than a question. "Double, triple, quadruple crosses, back stabbings, quite literally sometimes, let's just say overall shenanigans, are common in our business."
"I believe the oracle saw what she saw, and the gnome seems trustful, but assume there are other parties involved. That's not paranoia, just good business practice. Hopefully nothing nefarious, but if so, it looks like our little party can handle themselves."
Placing one hand on Tapu's shoulder, in a friendly gesture, eye to eye, "The key is to stay vigilant, learn what you can, be decisive, and," leaning down closer to the halfling, "quietly slip a blade in between their third and fourth rib if the need arises." the other hand doing just that, a dagger lightly pressed against the halfing, before quickly being resheathed.
Standing back up, "Any other questions?"

"Well, let’s hope that teamwork doesn’t get us killed," Tapu mumbles as he moves on to talk to the others. He sees Lady Kue. She seemed to be enjoying this voyage. Well, another unknown factor in the party to clear up. Tapu strides up to her. "Lady Kue, right? So, what’s your story?"

During the war, the Kingdom of Cyre engaged me and my squad. We specialized in recovering stolen artefacts and securing valuable relics that belonged to the crown. I did logistics and everything else a quartermaster took care of - and more. I supplied my group with transport, equipment and enchantments. She unpacks a deck of cards and looks through the deck. Protection. Weapon enhansment. Environmental Protection. That kind of thing.
My squad called themselves the royal flush - I was the queen of diamonds - shorten to Lady Kue

The airship crew unties the mooring lines, and you lift off into the sky above Sharn. The ship banks around the floating quarter of Skyway, then orients to the northwest. In minutes you're across the Dagger River and on your way to Zarash'ak, the closest thing the Shadow Marches has to a capital.
Your journey is a week long one. What do you do to pass the time?

"Well, there isn't much to tell," Tapu says. "I certainly didn’t have such an illustrious career as you had. No, I usually keep to myself and work alone. I am not exactly the trusting kind and not exactly hero material. So I am not sure where the Oracle lady got my name from, and that makes me suspicious."

Contemplation watches the daily routine of the airship with genuine interest. Humans (and humanoids) fascinate her.
Nov 17, 2024 6:10 am
Kyras does the same and takes the time to learn about the crew and the group he'll be working with. He also asks around about the oracle and the gnome, trying to get a feel for them outside of what he's heard before.
Nov 17, 2024 11:34 am
The airship is crewed by the Captain and four others, a first mate and three sailors. They're friendly enough, and show you all how the airship works and talks with you as they can to help pass the time. The Captain and the First Mate take turns steering the ship, and the other three help maintain her.
They don't know much about Flamewind that you haven't already heard. Supposedly she accompanied an expedition to Xen'drik, the continent to the south, back to the University two years ago. She sometimes spouts pieces of prophecy and sometimes calls adventurers and others to hear them.

Halfway through the voyage, Lady Kue approaches the captain and requests that they stick to flying over land. She is refused, and for the following few days Kue is miserable and stays cooped up in her bunk. Its only when they are over land again that she returns to her normal self.
I wanted to get an idear of where we were going, that we would fly over Manta Bay, and had the idea that Lady Kue is afraid of the deep water. I wouldn't have had the idea if I hadn't seen the map.

@JoshuaMabry as easy as it is to copy/paste images into a post (its automatly uploaded to imgur), I would suggest that you use a few visuals aids with your posts. This just some friendly feedback. Contemplation approaches Lady Kue after her request to avoid the water. "I am curious. Why do you not wish to travel over the water?"
Nov 18, 2024 7:28 am
I don’t… I don’t do deep water. It’s not just about swimming; it’s what’s underneath, what you can’t see. You ever felt it? That pull? Like something’s waiting for you down there? I’ve seen people—good people—disappear into it. Once, I barely got out myself. I can’t… I can’t shake it. It’s like the water remembers, and it’s just waiting for me to come back.
Her voice might waver for a moment before she clenches her jaw and forces a breath, trying to steady herself.
Anyway, it’s not about fear. It’s about knowing your limits. I stay on solid ground. It’s safer for everyone that way.
(As a bearer of the dragonmark of passage, she has some traveling ability, but usually of limited range. In the deep water there is no safety to travel too - just more water. This is properly the foundation of her phobia, but nothing she is aware of. )

Contemplation considers for a moment. "I Believe that I understand. I cannot swim, but not needing to breathe, I can simply walk along the bottom. I can see how not knowing what is beneath you would lead to anxiety. There are many dangers in the water."

After a week of uneventful yet still exciting air travel, you arrive at Zarash'ak. It is the only town of any substance in the Shadow Marches. It sits on a major portion of the Glum River, and most of the buildings are built on stilts. It's run by House Tharask, the Dragonmarked House of Finding, who runs significant dragonshard prospecting operations throughout the Marches. The City of Stilts, as it's called, is well known for exotic cuisine and music, and offers access to the rare exports of the Marches without having to trek through the swamp. Unfortunately, a trek through the swamp is exactly what you're in line for. You have a day to prepare for your journey before making your way north to the village of Blackroot to meet with Doria Veledaar.
Nov 20, 2024 7:51 pm
The prospect of a journey through the swamp causes Contemplation little concern. She is immune to insect bites and should be able to deal with most other threats. With a day to prepare, she decides to spend her time in a local tavern, watching the people and listening to the music.

Tapu looks around and says, "Well, since this will be our last touch of civilization, how about some good food and plenty of drink? Does anyone care to join me?" Tapu scans the group for any takers.

"Great! That's settled then" Tapu asks the crew for the best place to eat in town.

Kyras grimaces a bit, "Assuming it's more than just eel that they serve? Jonesy is risk-averse as they say, and prefers the more traditional meals of deer, boar, eagle, hippogriff, etc."

Contemplation follows the others. She has never tasted food and wonders what the sensation must be like.
Nov 24, 2024 2:58 pm
After getting directions from the crew and a short walk you arrive at the Steaming Eel, a little place off the main streets of the town. The stilted building is small, and crowded. Luckily there are patrons leaving just as you arrive and you're able to get a table in short order. House specialties include Goat Sausage Gumbo, Fried Frogs Legs, and of course, Steamed Eel in a Truffle Sauce. There's a local minstrel playing in the corner, and a decent drink menu.

Contemplation takes a seat with the others, watching curiously to see their reactions to the food and living vicariously through them.

After an incredibly delicious meal (including the eel, which turns out to be a tasty delight), you all retire to an inn for the evening. The next morning dawns, and with it the last leg of your trip. A week long trek through the swamp. The journey leaves you covered in mud and soaked in sweat. Hungry insects harried you the whole way, and the air has been warm and wet the whole week. Finally you reach the village of Blackroot, a hamlet tied to the Dorrm and Veladaar clans. The sun is beginning to set when the settlement comes into view. Like most villages in the Marches, the small community offers few amenities and no dragonmarked house services. There is no central authority in the Shadow Marches, and the village reeve is responsible for administering justice in the local region.
Blackroot derives its name from the dark trees that thrive in the area, their tangled roots rising up from the soil on all sides. The ground here is relatively solid for the Marches, and the village sits on a rocky rise. Its huts sit directly on the ground instead of being raised up on stilts above marshland, as is common elsewhere in the swamps. Orcs, humans and half-orcs work together in nearby orchards or pass along the main street. None of them seem particularly pleased to see you.
Within moments you are approached by a lean and muscular orc. His skin is weathered and streaks of gray line his long black hair. He bears no weapons and wears loose peasant clothing, but carries himself with confidence. "Greetings," he says. "I am Toraash'Dorrm, the reeve of Blackroot. I don't know what brings you here, but we've no inn, no tavern, and no time for strangers. I suggest you move on."

Just me recapping what we are doing here:JoshuaMabry says:
Then, suddenly, Flamewind speaks! "Kyras Blackthorne, Dane Gareth, Tapu, Lady Kue, and Contemplation. I have brought you here on a matter of grave import. You are brave, and bold, and spoken of in prophecy." Her eyes light with an arcane blue glow, and she speaks again, almost as if in a trance now. "When Madness and Night align, and innocent blood waters the dark tree, the Brave and the Bold must claim the Coat of Eyes, and bear this burden for the good of all."JoshuaMabry says:
Lassias turns to Tapu. "You're correct, normally the Prophecy is hard to decipher. It can sometimes take years to understand the meaning of a passage. Fortunately in this case we have some advantages. We know that Madness and Night "aligning" likely has to do with the conjunctions of the planes of Xoriat and Mabor, which will happen in about a month's time. And it just so happens that an associate of mine received word about something called the Coat of Eyes just yesterday. I think it's clear that your to seek out this Coat and claim it before something horrible happens during the planar conjunction."He is a soldier, protecting his charges. She thinks to herself.
