Perception check

Meepo flys down to get on the axe beak as he worries the broom might have issues following behind the cart. And then instructs the axe beak and giant hyena to "protect that lense".

Then turn to creature #4 and says "you know what to do" and gives it a nod in silent agreement.

Dubdub
The axebeak readies to follow Meepo's direction, the giant hyena joins Torhak beside the wagon. The creature sets up on the muddy shore of the swamp, then turns to look out over the water.

Dubdub produces a staff, which begins to glow with golden light. "Follow me the light."

Without a further word, the wyrmling takes flight, his underside illuminated by the staff clutched in his claws. Once airborne, he takes off away from the boggy area. Kalli spurs Stella and begins to follow.
OOC:
Tryne, give me a survival check to follow Dubdub.

Everyone else, it's skill challenge time! We'll take turns like combat, roll initiative. I'll need six successes before four failures. DC is 15.

The way I have this visualized, Tyrne is running the cart, Meepo is support, Torhak is in a rear gunner position in the wagon with the lens. Is anyone joining Tryne in the shotgun position up top?

P.S - Kalli, Leith and the Hyena will be at your disposal for any skills you wish to attempt.

Maybe 37 can use Guidance on Tryne. Maybe someone else can use the help action to give advantage in spotting the dragon.
Does someone have Hunter's Mark? That would also be useful for tracking Dubdub.

Dubdub and Kalli take off into the darkness. Tryne fires up the cart and tries to keep up with the glowing dragon. 37 takes a beat getting into the seat next to the half-elf and when he looks up, the dragon is just visible. He throttles up the cart as quick as he can. As he’s catching up, the cart catches on an unseen brush and snags it. Those inside are tossed forward for a moment and need to collect themselves as the cart continues to bounce along.

In the distance, Meepo’s creature can be heard yelling and violent splashes are heard. This is immediately followed by a blood curdling scream and silence. Meepo knows his servant will no longer be keeping anyone safe.
OOC:
Thats one failure.

Still need Torhak’s initiative.

Meepo is up, with 37 on deck.

Initiative, and rear gunner works for Torhak, he can fire off his Necrotic Bolts, is this lens plano-convex, maybe we could turn necrotic bolts into necrotic lasers!

Must we make a skill check on our turn? Or can we cast spells or take the help action. Naturally, the latter approach makes it much more likely to reach 6 successes before 4 failures. But it takes more rounds to do so.

OOC:
It really defeats the purpose of the challenge if all that’s happening is everyone gives each other buffs. The way a skill challenge works is everyone tells the story of how they helped each other through their dice. For example instead of giving Guiidance, you could actually give guidance. A perception, nature or survival check to help Tryne catch up to the dragon. Using illusions, distractions or traps could be deception. Having the hyena or axe beak help using animal handling. I’m not saying you can’t use spells per se, its just done through a skill instead. The DC is set for the player to tell how they succeed and DM to tell how they failed.

Sadly, not many use skill challenges anymore, but I love the RP/story telling element of them.

I’ll admit, 6/4 is a rather difficult one, but the point is to make it feel dire. Also, weekly rerolls are still available :)

I hope that makes more sense

I'd love to play into the strengths of my skills, I have Athletics, Insight, Survival, and Intimidation trained with Athletics being my best skill. But holding onto the lens, and in the rear gunner position, I am struggling to find a way to bring Athletics into it. Anyone else got any ideas how I could get involved? :)

@Nictorah All good. I just needed to understand how it's supposed to work.
@Madclergy You could lift a fallen tree that blocks the path.

OOC:
@Nictorah are we clear to create events like that to justify our skill uses?

That would be cool, thanks for the suggestion @runestone !

Absolutely!! I gave you the environment earlier, keep it within the narrative and we’re good.

I’ll give Meepo a bit, but then we’ll move on to 37 this evening.

Let’s move to 37.

Laulalith is on deck.

Meepo can catch up.
May 3, 2025 4:33 am
Ok sorry i guess i was waiting on to see what skill check I needed to do but i guess we roll a check and say how it might relate?

Meepo checks on the creatures charging after them to see if he can determine which area of the carriage they will attack first and send the giant hyena to guard that weakpoint.

Meepo realizes the creatures are much faster in the water, than on land. He also knows Tryne’s driving is faster on land than they are in the water. The narrow peninsula they are traversing opens the group up to attack from the side and the kobold wisely positions his hyena as a blocker. As he does this, the hyena knocks one of the creatures back into the swamp.

Tryne is beginning to gain on the golden dragon.
OOC:
That's one success!

37 is up, with Laulalith on deck.
