I've got the materials but no game to join. I played the 1e version as well but that was a while ago.

Anyone looking to run a game?

I don't know when, but I plan to run this. I would be running the Free League version, not 5e, if that matters. I've done a ton of prep work for it, just waiting for capacity on my end.

I'm also hankering to play. Have considered running but can't do that in the short term due to work and other commitments.

Count me in as a third, as long as it's ToR and not 5e.

I've been looking for an excuse to buy this game. Like Lemming, I'm looking to game TOR not 5e. Hopefully, the timing of the game's launch will work with my schedule and game load.

I played 1e long time ago and loved it. I am also interested to give this one a try. I have the 2e book but have not played any game yet.

It's lovely to see the interest! I know of a couple others too, so this is very encouraging. It's at the top of my list!

I’ve been wanting to play TOR forever, would definitely be interested in playing if anyone runs it.

Looks like there are at least 5 of us who would like to play and one who is interested in running it at some point. That's a decent start. And for any who were wondering, this is for TOR 2e, and NOT the D&D system version.

100% :D tbh, I have no interest in the D&D version of the system. I've been knee deep in learning/reading/watching stuff to get familiar with the Free League system for the game and it seems an incredible system for capturing the themes of Tolkien's work.

Sounds good to me. The system is pretty easy to grasp so you shouldn't have much trouble with it.

What about a quick low-intensity play of the Starter Set adventures with the pre-generated characters to get a handle on the rules while we wait for someone to have capacity to start a proper campaign?

I have run the first adventure of the starter set here, and to be honest I don't highly recommend it - for neither the LM or the players does it represent the system very well. My players all were left with feelings about the intro that were largely, I feel, a result of them not seeing how the game would truly play out in a normal game.

One big thing is in the way the starter box adventures present challenges. In the normal game, the LM presents situations, the players respond by deciding how to handle those challenges and choosing a skill to roll, if appropriate. The LM then adjudicates whether the skill is appropriate for what they want to achieve and maybe offers alternatives. In the starter box adventures, it guides the LM to call for certain skill checks and provides no direction for what to do if the players don't have those skills or alternatives, nor does it make it clear the LM is to use these as guidelines for handling the situation.

Just, if you choose to run it, be aware of things like this - I would highly recommend NOT calling for specific rolls and instead give players the latitude to make these decisions themselves from the beginning, so as to accurately reflect the game system.

I could elaborate on other aspects that fell flat, but it might get into spoilers of the intro adventure. If anyone is to run the intro, feel free to reach out to me directly :)

C1NDER, I was about to offer that same counsel! 8]

I'd be very eager to join a TOR game. I've run the 1st edition for a couple of years over the course of a long campaign that I wrote up. We didn't finish it, but it even included a ton of mass combat episodes over the bridge of Osgiliath. Good times!

The starter set adventures are pretty low stakes and a bit linear but I was more thinking we could just grab some pre-gens and use the core rules (mostly) to have a quick and dirty go at familiarising ourselves with the system and how to run it on Gamersplane). There's quite a lot stuff pre-written which would make running it easier but I'd approach it like any other scenario - so let people think outside the box if they have a great idea rather than the more 'choose your own adventure' approach of the scenarios as written. But no problem if people don't fancy a cosy Shire based game of hobbits, that's a bit of a different vibe from the core game to be sure.

I’d be up for playing it.

Since no one sounds like they have the bandwidth to GM at the moment, the railroady aspects of the starter adventure might even work better for us since we could try to run it semi-GMless.

I'd be happy to GM it'd just be that I'd be leaning on the pre-written stuff a bit more. Because the scenarios are all in the Shire it's a bit more self contained.

While I'm not ready to GM yet myself, I would be very interested in joining a short game as a player, to see someone else run it and see things from a player perspective. Please consider me if you do :)

I'll let the suggestion hang for a few days and see if there's any bites. I'm away at the weekend so it wouldn't get started until next week anyway.
